Dana White: ‘Conor McGregor Is The Only True Meaning Of Pound-For-Pound Greatest Fighter’

“When you talk about the pound-for-pound, they don’t have Conor McGregor as the pound-for-pound – the media does the ratings – when you talk about what pound-for-pound really means, how is it not Conor McGregor? The guy was the [145] pound champion, [155] pound champion, and beat a guy at 170 [pounds]. That’s what pound-for-pound really means.”

Jake Shields: An Unexpected Journey

About the only color in the sterile, white hospital room came from an unusual place. It emanated from the fighter sitting awake in his bed groping at the gauzy figure around him, more specifically, his eyes. A distorted, purplish hue had already taken shape around swollen, tear-filled, mini-mountains of stretched flesh that jutted up beyond his forehead. He was broken, and his mumbled words were depressing. What hurt Jake Shields more than anything that night was the feeling that something he loved, his passion, had robbed him. Everything he did right was defeated by an opponent who did everything wrong. This was his price, he thought, for the countless hours and sacrifice, lying in this hospital bed wondering if he would ever be able to clearly see his daughter or family again. The last time Shields was in the cage, he submitted to Rousimar Palhares at World Series of Fighting 22 on Aug. 1, 2015 in Las Vegas. It was a fight Shields had controlled until he became entangled in a Palhares kimura and tapped 2:02 into the third round.

The Hit List: Undefeated Fighters in the UFC

Cody Garbrandt finds himself in exclusive company as he prepares to challenge Dominick Cruz for the undisputed bantamweight title in the UFC 207 co-main event on Dec. 30 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Only 30 of the 670 fighters the Ultimate Fighting Championship lists on its UFC.com roster are undefeated and have at least one victory inside the Octagon, and Garbrandt is one of them. The 25-year-old Team Alpha Male standout has developed rapidly since arriving in the UFC, as he has improved to 10-0 with five consecutive victories, four of them finishes. Garbrandt’s victims include Marcus Brimgae, Enrique Briones , Augusto Mendes and Thomas Almeida , who was a perfect 21-0 at the time of their encounter. The Uhrichsville, Ohio, native last appeared at UFC 202 on Aug. 20, when he disposed of Takeya Mizugaki with punches in just 48 seconds and cemented his position at the No. 1 contender at 135 pounds. His unblemished record notwithstanding, Garbrandt faces an uphill climb against Cruz. The Alliance MMA cornerstone will enter the cage on a 13-fight winning streak and has not tasted defeat in nearly a decade.

The Bottom Line: Dominick Cruz the True King of MMA Trash Talk

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Who is the best trash talker in MMA? If you took a poll on that question, there’s no question who would win it handily. With his bluster, braggadocio and style, Conor McGregor would get the nod. McGregor doesn’t just entertain with his words; he draws lots and lots of money with them. He has the highest profile, and for many, the revenue he generates is the ultimate proof of his verbal supremacy. Unquestionably, McGregor deserves respect for his microphone arsenal. There’s nothing wrong with arguing he’s the best. However, when it comes to the best pure ability to verbally obliterate an opponent, my money’s not on McGregor. It’s on Dominick Cruz . His beatdown of Cody Garbrandt during the UFC on Fox 22 broadcast on Saturday -- it was not even peak Cruz -- was yet another reminder that when it comes talking trash, “The Dominator” is the pound-for-pound best.

UFC 207's Cody Garbrandt has been thinking about a fight with Dominick Cruz since he was a kid

Cruz is more than a 2-1 favorite against Garbrandt, who has won four of his first five UFC fights by knockout, including three straight in the first round. Cruz has the experience factor working for him, but that didn’t seem to matter to Garbrandt when he fought Takeya Mizugaki in August and stopped him in the first round. Or when he handed Thomas Almeida the only loss of his career – by knockout, despite Almeida having more than twice as many fights as him.

After Rough Stretch, Ex-UFC Champ Johny Hendricks Says Wife Helped Him Renew Motivation

It wasn’t all that long ago that Johny Hendricks looked like he was going to be a staple atop the UFC’s welterweight division. A six-fight winning streak in the Octagon led him to a showdown with then champion Georges St. Pierre , and although “Bigg Rigg” lost a split-decision, many observers thought he won the bout. When St. Pierre announced that he was taking an indefinite hiatus and vacating the belt, the hard-hitting Hendricks claimed UFC gold in an instant classic against Robbie Lawler at UFC 171. Since then, the former NCAA national champion wrestler has fallen on hard times. He lost the belt in a rematch with Lawler and has fallen in three of his last four Octagon appearances overall. After a bad weight cut forced him to pull out of a bout with Tyron Woodley at UFC 192 at the last minute, Hendricks has been severely outclassed by Stephen Thompson and Kelvin Gastelum in his most recent two outings. To make matters worse, he missed weight for his showdown with Gastelum at UFC 200. Suddenly, Hendricks was simply an also-ran in a division he once appeared primed to rule.

Coach: ‘Aldo’s moving to lightweight so Max can go to Disneyland’

“Our plans for this year would be this fight, challenging the No. 1 challenger, which would be Khabib – we want to get the toughest guy in the division, who everyone, say, runs from – and then, after that, Conor, who’s pregnant and will only fight after that. Both Sean Shelby and Dana White thought it was a brilliant idea, sensational. So that Aldo could be at a situation in which there was no way Conor could sit and say, ‘I won’t fight him.’ If he gets beat, he’ll fight Holloway, no problem. Everyone is happy. Max Holloway goes to Disney to see Mickey and Goofy, Aldo fights the No.1 challenger, takes away Conor’s possible defeat to Khabib – which is what everyone thinks – and finally he has the rematch with Conor and shows the entire world he’s the true champion.”

The California Kid: A Sherdog Retrospective

Urijah Faber was one of a kind. “The California Kid” was there when the sport of mixed martial arts went from crawling to walking to running, his remarkable career spanning more than 13 years and six organizations. He captured titles in King of the Cage and World Extreme Cagefighting , helping bring the latter to global prominence as an energetic bundle of chiseled muscles, cornrows and charisma on the Versus network. Faber joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship as part of the WEC merger in 2011 and went 10-6 inside the Octagon -- a run that included two “Submission of the Night” awards and a “Fight of the Night” bonus. Outside the cage, he founded a Team Alpha Male camp that was ahead of its time and served as a launching pad for fighters like T.J. Dillashaw , Joseph Benavidez , Chad Mendes , Paige VanZant and Cody Garbrandt . Faber on Dec. 17 exited the stage as a competitor for the final time at UFC on Fox 22 , where, fittingly in his hometown of Sacramento, California, he recorded a unanimous decision over Brad Pickett .

Opinion: Watching Through the Rearview

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * I watched UFC on Fox 22 after it had already finished. I had to work on Sunday morning, when most fight cards are live in my time zone, and after the requisite hweshik -- a Korean custom where you go out and drink with your boss -- all the hands had already been raised in Sacramento, California. While I was out, I couldn’t help myself; by the time I rolled home, I knew the who and the how of the event’s winners. I probably could have left it at that and scanned through play-by-plays and post-fight analyses, but there’s a difference between reading about fights and actually watching them. So that’s what I did. For whatever is lost in the way of genuine intrigue, watching fights through the rearview makes up for it with added clarity. Upsets, bad decisions, surprising performances -- they all make more sense when you expect them.
