An MMA Christmas: 10 Fights We Want Santa to Bring Us for 2017

One age-old question arises every year in late December: What do you want for Christmas? For MMA fans, the answer is often the same: great fights. The past 12 months in mixed martial arts have given rise to plenty of unforgettable showdowns. There was the five-round war between Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit at UFC 195 on Jan. 2, the shocking back-and-forth struggle between Miesha Tate and Holly Holm at UFC 196 on March 5, the epic UFC Fight Pass encounter between Marco Polo Reyes and Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 199 on June 4, the blockbuster rematch between Conor McGregor and Nick Diaz at UFC 202 on Aug. 20 and the remarkable war of attrition between Cub Swanson and Doo Ho Choi at UFC 206 on Dec. 10. Even the regional scene got in on the act, with the 25-minute classic between Angela Lee and Mei Yamaguchi giving the One Championship organization a legitimate “Fight of the Year” contender on May 6. No one knows what the next year will bring, except perhaps for the jolly old elf who occupies the North Pole. As we barrel towards 2017, Sherdog.

The California Kid: A Sherdog Retrospective

Urijah Faber was one of a kind. “The California Kid” was there when the sport of mixed martial arts went from crawling to walking to running, his remarkable career spanning more than 13 years and six organizations. He captured titles in King of the Cage and World Extreme Cagefighting , helping bring the latter to global prominence as an energetic bundle of chiseled muscles, cornrows and charisma on the Versus network. Faber joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship as part of the WEC merger in 2011 and went 10-6 inside the Octagon -- a run that included two “Submission of the Night” awards and a “Fight of the Night” bonus. Outside the cage, he founded a Team Alpha Male camp that was ahead of its time and served as a launching pad for fighters like T.J. Dillashaw , Joseph Benavidez , Chad Mendes , Paige VanZant and Cody Garbrandt . Faber on Dec. 17 exited the stage as a competitor for the final time at UFC on Fox 22 , where, fittingly in his hometown of Sacramento, California, he recorded a unanimous decision over Brad Pickett .

Alex Morono-Sheldon Westcott Added to UFC Fight Night 104

It didn’t take long for Alex Morono to get his next fight lined up. Just a week after edging James Moontasri on the UFC on Fox 22 card, Morono has been booked to fight Sheldon Westcott at UFC Fight Night 104 “Korean Zombie vs. Bermudez.” The news was first reported by MMAJunkie. “The Great White” fought tooth and nail with Moontasri last Saturday, which was his second win inside the Octagon and his seventh in a row. Looking to climb up the welterweight ranks, Morono is hoping to add Westcott’s name to his resume. Westcott, meanwhile, has been inactive for nearly a year. A finalist on “The Ultimate Fighter: Nations” where he lost to Elias Theodorou , Westcott lost to Pawel Pawlak in 2015 but rebounded with a TKO win over Edgar Garcia at UFC 195. Westcott is hoping to not only keep his winning ways alive but also be more active in 2017. UFC Fight Night 104 will be headlined by a featherweight matchup between Dennis Bermudez and Chan Sung Jung . The action will commence inside the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, and will air first on UFC Fight Pass and then on FS1.

Ryan Spann to Face Trevin Giles in Legacy Fighting Alliance 3 Main Event

Newly-formed mixed martial arts promotion Legacy Fighting Alliance announced Friday afternoon that its third event is headed to the Bayou in February. LFA CEO Ed Soares revealed that middleweights Ryan Spann and Trevin Giles will headline LFA 3, which takes place Feb. 10 at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Lake Charles, La. Giles, an undefeated prospect on the verge of taking that next step to the big time, has already headline shows for both the Resurrection Fighting Alliance and Legacy Fighting Championship this year. When he takes on Spann, he’ll become the only man in history to headline those events and an LFA card. “I think it’s an honor to fight for the LFA in the main event. It means you’re doing something right,” stated Giles. “Ryan Spann is a tough guy and a good opponent, but I’m not impressed with his will. It can be broken in a fight and it’s just a matter of time before I do at LFA 3. On February 10th, I will become the first person to win main events for RFA, Legacy FC, and LFA.” Spann, meanwhile, is hoping to get his career back on track.

Bellator MMA Veteran Mike Richman to Face Lazar Stojadinovic in LFA 2 Headliner

Legacy Fighting Alliance , the new mixed martial arts promotion that was birthed from the merger between Resurrection Fighting Alliance and Legacy Fighting Championship , revealed that its second event will come to fight fans on Jan. 20. A U.S. Marine veteran, Richman will be making his Minnesota homecoming for the first time in five years. After competing a dozen times for Bellator MMA , “The Marine” will be competing for the first time in nearly two years since losing a decision to Eduardo Dantas . Stojadinovic has been tearing the 145-pound division apart lately, having won seven in row. He’s stopped of those foes by either submission or knockout and then Serbian brawler is looking to do the same to Richman. The LFA 2 co-feature will see Chico Camus taking on Darrick Minner in a bantamweight showdown.

Stories from the Road: Jacob ‘Stitch’ Duran

Everyone knows him, even though many may not know his name. Everyone has seen him, too, either in the corner at major boxing matches or administering to another seemingly impossible situation in the cage, looking down on a fighter busted up over his eyebrow with no hope of continuing. He is usually on the periphery, the bespectacled one with the thick head of black hair and white sidewalls, a Q-tip dangling behind an ear, wearing rubber gloves with a towel in one hand and a wad of sealant goop in the other, pressing it against a fighter’s face. Jacob “Stitch” Duran is the guru of mixed martial arts cutmen. Anyone who knows anything about boxing or MMA knows him as one of the best quick-fix guys in the world. During the recent tilt between Joe Smith Jr. and Bernard Hopkins at the Forum in Inglewood, California, there was Duran applying pressure to staunch a cut over Smith’s left eyebrow which was caused by a Hopkins’ head butt earlier in the fight. As is typical with “Stitch,” a cut that may have caused serious problems was not an issue at all after being treated by Duran’s magical touch.

Lion Fight 34 to be Headlined by Regian Eersel vs. Samy Sana

Muay Thai powerhouse Lion Fight Promotions has announced its first event of 2017 and the Las Vegas-based company will be staying home. Lion Fight 34 will commence inside the newly-renovated Tropicana Resort Casino on Feb. 3 and the show is slated to be loaded with international flavor. Anchoring the event will be Regian Eersel making the first defense of his super middleweight title against 2014 Best of Siam champ Samy Sana (86-3). Eersel (44-4) exploded on the American scene back at Lion Fight 29 when he torched Jo Nattawut with a head kick in the fourth of a non-title affair. At Lion Fight 33, “The Immortal” clobbered Jake Purdy by finishing him with knees in the second. Also slated for the bill is women’s super bantamweight champion Iman Barlow (84-5-3) defending her crown against Meryum Uslu (39-9-1). Middleweights Gabriel Mazzetti and Nick Chasteen will collide, as will Anthony Njokuani and Chris Harrington in a super middleweight tussle. The promotion also announced that Diego Llamas will face River Daz and Kronphet Phetrachapat will take on Kevin Burmester. “When you can put champions like Regian Eersel and Iman Barlow on the same card alongside rising stars like Gabriel Mazzetti and Diego Llamas ,it is already a stellar lineup,” said Lion Fight CEO Scott Kent .

Alexey Oleynik Replaces Damien Grabowski at UFC Fight Night 103

With Damian Grabowski off the UFC Fight Night 103 “Rodriguez vs. Penn” card next month, heavyweight contender Viktor Pesta needed an opponent. According to a report from MMAJunkie, it looks like Pesta will be grappling with the “Boa Constrictor.” Alexey Oleynik has agreed to fill in on relatively shortly notice to face Pesta on the card, which goes down Jan. 15 at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix. The card will begin on UFC Fight Pass before switching over to FS1, though an exact bout order has yet to be finalized. Oleinik has been fighting since the early days of mixed martial arts and has already amassed 50 career wins. The Russian is coming off a majority decision loss to Daniel Omielanczuk at UFC Fight Night 91 in July. Pesta is looking to rebound off consecutive knockout losses to Marcin Tybura and Derrick Lewis ; the Czech is just 1-3 inside the Octagon. UFC Fight Night 103 will be anchored by a featherweight tilt between popular Mexican Yair Rodriguez and former lightweight and welterweight champion B.

Dana White: UFC Focused on Russia; McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov ‘Could Be’ Next Title Bout

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is always looking to break new international ground, and the Las Vegas-based promotion has its sights set on one spot in particular for 2017. “We’re focused very heavily on Russia right now. We’re working on Russia,” White told Fox 5 in New York. “First of all, there’s tons of talent coming out of Russia and a lot of fans. There’s a fighter named Khabib [Nurmagomedov] who’s from Russia and he’s insanely popular.” Nurmagomedov, of course, has established himself as one of the best talents in the UFC’s lightweight division. “The Eagle” is 24-0 as a professional and owns Octagon triumphs over the likes of Michael Johnson , Rafael dos Anjos , Thiago Tavares and Gleison Tibau . While Nurmagomedov and fellow top contender Tony Ferguson have bickered on social media regarding a proposed bout, White hinted that the Dagestani might already be at the front of the line at 155 pounds. “The next fight could be Conor vs. Khabib,” White said. Following a lopsided unanimous verdict over Johnson at UFC 205, Nurmagomedov called out McGregor, who would capture lightweight gold with a second-round knockout of Eddie Alvarez later that evening.

After Rough Stretch, Ex-UFC Champ Johny Hendricks Says Wife Helped Him Renew Motivation

It wasn’t all that long ago that Johny Hendricks looked like he was going to be a staple atop the UFC’s welterweight division. A six-fight winning streak in the Octagon led him to a showdown with then champion Georges St. Pierre , and although “Bigg Rigg” lost a split-decision, many observers thought he won the bout. When St. Pierre announced that he was taking an indefinite hiatus and vacating the belt, the hard-hitting Hendricks claimed UFC gold in an instant classic against Robbie Lawler at UFC 171. Since then, the former NCAA national champion wrestler has fallen on hard times. He lost the belt in a rematch with Lawler and has fallen in three of his last four Octagon appearances overall. After a bad weight cut forced him to pull out of a bout with Tyron Woodley at UFC 192 at the last minute, Hendricks has been severely outclassed by Stephen Thompson and Kelvin Gastelum in his most recent two outings. To make matters worse, he missed weight for his showdown with Gastelum at UFC 200. Suddenly, Hendricks was simply an also-ran in a division he once appeared primed to rule.

Aldo: Conor was never champion of my division!

“He’s two-faced. He says a lot of stuff to the press, but behind-the-scenes, he turns down fights left and right. He picks opponents, he picks events. He’s not willing to face challengers the way a champion should be ready to face challengers. That’s not a true champion. He spent a year without defending the belt, so his math doesn’t add up when he says, I was the champion for less than 12 months. He wasn’t the champion at all. He never defended the belt. He wanted to stall an entire division. That’s not being a champion. I’ve never seen Conor as the featherweight champion. He’s not the champion now. I’ve never stopped being the featherweight champion.”

MMA’s Greats of the States | North Dakota: Ronda Rousey

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. *** Ronda Rousey rewrote the promotional playbook in mixed martial arts, becoming the sport’s foremost superstar and most bankable box office draw. While she was born and resides in California, she spent a significant chunk of her formative years in North Dakota due to a speech impediment. Rousey was the first American female to medal in judo at the Olympics, capturing bronze at the 2008 Summer Games in China. She made the move to MMA two years later, went 3-0 as an amateur and made her professional debut in March 2011.

Jake Shields: An Unexpected Journey

About the only color in the sterile, white hospital room came from an unusual place. It emanated from the fighter sitting awake in his bed groping at the gauzy figure around him, more specifically, his eyes. A distorted, purplish hue had already taken shape around swollen, tear-filled, mini-mountains of stretched flesh that jutted up beyond his forehead. He was broken, and his mumbled words were depressing. What hurt Jake Shields more than anything that night was the feeling that something he loved, his passion, had robbed him. Everything he did right was defeated by an opponent who did everything wrong. This was his price, he thought, for the countless hours and sacrifice, lying in this hospital bed wondering if he would ever be able to clearly see his daughter or family again. The last time Shields was in the cage, he submitted to Rousimar Palhares at World Series of Fighting 22 on Aug. 1, 2015 in Las Vegas. It was a fight Shields had controlled until he became entangled in a Palhares kimura and tapped 2:02 into the third round.
