Matches to Make After UFC 218

Max Holloway sent a cold two-word message to those who would seek to overthrow him: Good luck. The Hawaiian superstar carved up Jose Aldo in their rematch and authored a third-round technical knockout to retain the undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight title in the UFC 218 main event on Saturday at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. Holloway buried the Brazilian with punches 4:51 into Round 3, as he put his 12th straight win in the books and continued to paint himself as a historical figure at 145 pounds. Even armed with his vaunted leg kicks, Aldo was no match for the champion. Holloway lulled him to sleep for the better part of two rounds and then lured him into a firefight from which there was no escape. According to preliminary FightMetric data, the 25-year-old unleashed 212 strikes on Aldo in the third round alone, connecting with 114 of them. Picture a lawnmower hitting an ant pile. By fight’s end, Holloway had landed nearly 100 more significant strikes than the future hall of famer. In the aftermath of UFC 218 “Holloway vs.

UFC 218 Bonuses: Alvarez-Gaethje, Medeiros-Oliveira Both Get ‘Fight of the Night’ Honors

One lived up to the hype. The other exceeded expectations. Both were found deserving of $50,000 post-fight bonuses. Eddie Alvarez vs. Justin Gaethje and Yancy Medeiros vs. Alex Oliveira both received “Fight of the Night” honors at UFC 218 in Detroit on Saturday night. Both bouts, as anyone watching the card can attest, were worthy recipients. Alvarez-Gaethje was perhaps the most anticipated matchup on the entire bill. The two lightweights did not disappoint, trading liberally throughout the contest. While Gaethje found the mark on many of his trademark leg kicks, Alvarez attacked the ex-World Series of Fighting Champion with body blows repeatedly. That work took its toll, and Alvarez capitalized with a knee and follow-up punches for a thrilling victory 3:59 into the third round. Meanwhile, Medeiros and Oliveira set the stage nicely in a preliminary welterweight scrap. Oliveira had Medeiros reeling with a pair of knockdowns in the opening stanza, but the Hawaiian survived the onslaught. Medeiros took control in the second frame and finished the contest in the third, putting the Brazilian away with a stream of punches and elbows at the 2:02 mark.

‘TUF 26’ Finale Bonuses: Johns, Montano, Modafferi, Meerschaert Earn $50K Paychecks

Brett Johns grabbed a “slice” of UFC history on Friday night, and he was compensated accordingly for his efforts. Johns improved to 15-0 by authoring the second calf slicer finish in promotion history, tapping Joe Soto with the maneuver just 30 seconds into their bantamweight bout at “The Ultimate Fighter 26” finale. “The Pikey” joined Charles Oliveira as the only two men to execute the submission in the Octagon, and as a result, he earned a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” check. Meanwhile, Nicco Montano and Roxanne Modafferi received “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their work in the main event. In a high-paced contest that saw the two flyweights combine to throw nearly 1,000 total strikes over five rounds, Montano outlanded and outworked her foe to earn a unanimous decision and become the promotion’s inaugural female 125-pound champion. Elsewhere, Gerald Meerschaert captured the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for his second round knockout of Eric Spicely . Meerschaert softened his foe with a series of body kicks in the second frame, the last of which connected to the liver and finished Spicely 2:18 into the period.

‘TUF 26’ Finale Prelims: Ryan Janes Stuns Favored Andrew Sanchez in Remarkable Comeback

Ryan Janes, the biggest underdog on the card gets the huge comeback win over Andrew Sanchez! https://t.co/bahcmqyqGD — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) December 2, 2017 Andrew Sanchez threw everything in his arsenal at Ryan Janes . It was not enough. Janes disposed of the heavily favored former Resurrection Fighting Alliance champion with third-round punches, highlighting “The Ultimate Fighter” 26 Finale prelims on Friday at Park Theater in Las Vegas. Broken by fatigue and an accumulation of damage, Sanchez (9-4, 2-2 UFC) wilted 58 seconds into Round 3. No one could have foreseen the finish after Janes (10-3, 2-2 UFC) absorbed a hellacious beating in the first round. Sanchez tore into the Canadian with a sustained burst of power punches. Twice “The Ultimate Fighter 23” winner dropped Janes with right hands and swarmed with follow-up punches. However, his inability to close the deal proved costly. Sanchez entered the second round visibly winded -- and vulnerable. A rejuvenated Janes pressed forward, cut off weak takedown attempts and attacked the K Dojo Warrior Tribe rep with punches to the body and head.

Opinion: A G.O.A.T. for All Seasons

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * A few years ago, I wrote a series called “Under the Microscope,” where I analyzed the Greatest of All-Time arguments for fighters across several weight classes . I only did this for the five legacy divisions -- lightweight through heavyweight -- since the sub-lightweight weight classes were too young; there simply weren’t enough fighters who could be legitimately defended as the G.O.A.T. Every weight class had its own distinct gray areas and there were definitely fighters that were harder to make a case for than others, but there were at least enough contenders for the crown. I debated doing a shortened version for featherweight but ultimately didn’t because there was really only one option: Jose Aldo . He was the only Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight titleholder at the time, and he had dominated two of the three previous World Extreme Cagefighting champions along the way.

Max Holloway Declines ‘Best Ever’ Label Following Second Victory Over Jose Aldo

Sports entertainment star Ric Flair coined the phrase, “To be the man, you gotta beat the man.” Using that logic, Max Holloway has already beaten “the man” in the UFC’s featherweight division twice. But despite back-to-back victories over the previous featherweight G.O.A.T, Holloway isn’t ready to assume the mantle of “best ever” at 145 pounds. “I’ve got a lot of catching up to do. You’ve got to respect the man,” Holloway said in his post-fight interview at UFC 218 . “The man’s got all the numbers. I gotta catch up on the title defenses and then maybe we can talk about it.” Holloway became the undisputed featherweight king with a third-round stoppage of Aldo at UFC 212 this past summer. While he finished Aldo in the same round on Saturday in Detroit, “Blessed” was arguably even more dominant in the rematch. He baited the Brazilian into a brawl in round three, and capitalized as his opponent faded. A barrage of punches had Aldo reeling and forced him to shoot for a desperation takedown. Holloway stifled the attempt and finished the fight with punches and hammerfists at the 4:51 mark of round three.

UFC 218 reactions: Winning and losing fighters on social media

WARNING!! Emotional post. I had the best night of my life last night and for so many reasons. The obvious reason being that I won my fight but I have had many wins before and nothing felt as good as it did last night. I want people to know a little bit more on why last night was so special to me….When you’re a top level athlete your life becomes that sport. I am in the gym morning and night, in between sessions I am rushing home to let my dog out, quickly make healthy food and then try to rest until my next training session so I don’t have time for much else. I let a lot of my other priorities get pushed to the side when I am in fight camp, I don’t get to see my friends much, my family as much as I like and most times I get to see my boyfriend it’s for 20 mins at night before I pass out from exhaustion. I don’t know how many times people have asked me to do something but I had to say no because I don’t eat out or stay out late and it starts to feel like i am missing out on things but i know it’s a small price I have to pay to follow my dreams and do the best I can do. I have left the gym crying multiple times, i have yelled at training partners and coaches because i am frustrated, i have had to deal with injuries while training, and so many other things but i still wake up each day and get to the gym and work hard because that’s the career i chose.
