Preview: UFC Fight Night 123 ‘Swanson vs. Ortega’ - Swanson vs. Ortega

With all due respect to Alexandre Franca Nogueira , the featherweight division is as hot as it has ever been in the history of mixed martial arts. Consider this: On Dec. 2, we saw an engrossing clash between a young lion and established legend -- the No. 1 versus No. 2 -- and that was merely considered a consolation prize. No, we wanted featherweight champion Max Holloway to defend against Frankie Edgar at UFC 218 in Detroit, but instead, we had to settle for perhaps MMA’s brightest young star smashing Jose Aldo for the second time in six months. Moving on with the Ultimate Fighting Championship schedule, if Edgar’s eye socket fails to heal properly, we could soon be looking at the next man to challenge Holloway. At UFC Fight Night 123 on Saturday in Fresno, California, we will be treated to exactly the kind of fight that screams for five-round, Fox Sports 1 main event treatment, as perennial contender Cub Swanson faces the undefeated Brian Ortega . It may give us a winner, but this headliner in and of itself might not provide any kind of 145-pound clarity.

Cub Swanson: By The Numbers

Cub Swanson has fought champions, but he has never fought for a championship. Continuing his pursuit of an elusive Ultimate Fighting Championship title shot, the longtime Jackson-Wink MMA featherweight will carry a four-fight winning streak into his critical five-round clash with the unbeaten Brian Ortega in the UFC Fight Night 123 headliner on Saturday at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. Swanson has been a mainstay of the 145-pound weight class for years, testing his skills and mettle against some of the division’s most accomplished fighters. He last competed at UFC Fight Night 108 on April 22, when he took a unanimous decision from SBG Ireland export Artem Lobov and escaped a high-risk, low-reward showdown with his faculties intact. Swanson has compiled a 10-3 record in the UFC, his only losses coming to Max Holloway , Frankie Edgar and Ricardo Lamas . As Swanson makes final preparations for his battle with Ortega, here are some of the numbers that have come to define him: 1: Defeat by knockout.

5 Things You Might Not Know About Brian Ortega

Brian Ortega appears to have mastered the middle tier of the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s featherweight division. Now, he must hurdle one of its most consistent contenders. Ortega will put his undefeated record on the line against Jackson-Wink MMA export Cub Swanson in the UFC Fight Night 123 main event on Saturday at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. The 26-year-old has rattled off four consecutive victories, all of them third-round finishes, since he was suspended for a positive steroid test following his organizational debut in 2014. Ortega last competed at UFC 214 on July 29, when he submitted Renato Carneiro with a guillotine choke. Now 12-0 with one no-contest -- his rear-naked choke submission on Mike de la Torre at UFC on Fox 12 was wiped from the books after he was flagged for drostanolone -- across nearly eight years of professional competition, “T-City” continues to trend in the right direction. Ahead of the unbeaten Ortega’s high-stakes showdown with Swanson, here are five things you might not know about him: 1. He has close ties to MMA’s First Family.

GSP Vacates Middleweight Title; Whittaker vs. Rockhold Set for UFC 221 on Feb. 10

Georges St. Pierre will not be defending the middleweight title he won at UFC 217. Robert Whittaker will square off against Luke Rockhold for the undisputed 185-pound belt at UFC 221 in Perth on Feb. 10. The Las Vegas-based promotion announced the bout on Thursday night while also revealing that St. Pierre is vacating the middleweight title, “effective immediately.” As a result, Whittaker has been elevated to undisputed middleweight champion. St. Pierre recently announced that he has been dealing with ulcerative colitis and would not be likely to compete at 185 pounds again. “Rush” defeated Michael Bisping via third round submission at UFC 217 on Nov. 4 to capture the middleweight crown. “My fight at UFC 217 was one of the greatest nights of my life but I now need to take some time to focus on my health. Out of respect to the athletes and the sport, I don’t want to hold up the division,” St. Pierre said in a release. “I will be giving up my belt and once I’m healthy I look forward to working with the UFC to determine what’s next in my career.

UFC Fight Night 123 results: Scott Holtzman dominates Darrell Horcher en route to unanimous decision

The one thing working in Horcher’s favor was referee Mike Beltran, who was quick to stand the fight up the instant the pace slowed even a little on the mat. That gave Horcher the chance he struggled to get for himself, and several times he almost made it count, coming with centimeters of landing a big blow on the wary Holtzman.

UFC Fight Night 123 ‘Swanson vs. Ortega’ Play-by-Play, Results & Round-by-Round Scoring

Cub Swanson vs. Brian Ortega Round 1 Referee Mike Beltran is the third man in the cage for tonight's all-California main event, scheduled for five rounds in the featherweight division. Judges Derek Cleary, Ron McCarthy and Marcos Rosales will score the bout at cageside. The fighters exchange leg kicks in a slow-paced opening minute, with Swanson landing a few more than Ortiz over the next 60 seconds. Ortega catches Swanson pressing forward with a right hand, but Swanson swings right back to counter. Swanson tests out a few feints and level changes, then fires a left high kick, blocked by Ortega with a glove. Ortega covers up as Swanson fires a combination, tacking on a low kick at the end. Ortega backpedals to avoid most of Swanson's next charging combo. Swanson slows things down and stays on the outside with low kicks as they fight inside the final two minutes. Ortega eats a right hand over the top, slides backward and pops the incoming Swanson with a jab. Swanson goes to the body of Ortega with a double jab, lands a leg kick and then flashes a left hook to the face of "T-City." Out of nowhere, Ortega snares Swanson in a tight guillotine and rolls him to the ground.

As far as boxing goes, Diaz has trained in the sport for years alongside his brother Nick, who had previously teased a possible run in boxing as well. Be 'super pissed' all you want, but Georges St-Pierre doesn't owe us anything

On the other hand, if ever a case of colitis could be considered convenient, this is it. St-Pierre may have wanted to win the middleweight title, but he never seemed too enthusiastic about being the middleweight champion and shouldering all the burdens and responsibilities that come with it. He may be legitimately very sick, but it also seems to have hit him at a time when he didn’t really want to go to work anyway.

It marks just the fourth time in UFC history that the heavyweight and light heavyweight titles would be at stake on the same card. The last time it happened was on Dec. 27, 2008, at UFC 92, where 205-pound champion Forrest Griffin lost the title to Rashad Evans via TKO, while interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira was stopped for the first time in his career by Frank Mir.

UFC Fight Night 123 results: Gabriel Benitez survives bite – yes, bite! – to dominate Jason Knight

Almost immediately it became clear that while Knight had plenty of aggression, it was Benitez who was the sharper fighter. He picked Knight apart on the feet and fended off the his takedowns, even when that meant getting his finger bitten early in the first – a foul that would cost Knight a point on the scorecards.

I thought I recognized that handsome face from somewhere. Good for him and good for the sport. The current refs do a good job, but it's also nice to have someone who competed as a ref. It's a good way to give back.
