Currently Under USADA Suspension, Ricardo Abreu Notified of Second Anti-Doping Violation

UFC middleweight Ricardo Abreu has been notified by the United States Anti-Doping Agency of a potential anti-doping violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collected on Dec. 21. Abreu is already serving two-year suspension from USADA after testing positive for 19-norandrosterone (19-NA) above the decision limit of 3 ng/mL and 19-noretiocholanolone in an out-of-competition test on June 3. Both substances are metabolites of the anabolic steroid nandrolone. Under the terms of his current suspension, Abreu is not eligible to return to competition until July 1, 2018. USADA will handle the results management and potential punishment regarding Abreu’s latest positive test. The Brazilian will be entitled to a full legal review process before any sanctions are imposed. The 32-year-old Brazilian last appeared at UFC Fight Night 68 in June 2015, when he dropped a split decision against Jake Collier . Abreu is 5-1 over the course of his professional career, which includes a win over Wagner Silva Gomes in his Octagon debut at “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3” finale.

Women's MMA Trailblazer Aisling Daly Announces Retirement After Brain Scan Abnormality

I will be officially retiring from the sport of MMA. This past year a routine brain scan showed up evidence of an abnormality, the remnant of a small haemorrhage that had taken place at some point in the months previous. It would be unlikely I would be medically cleared to compete again, even in the event I could find a doctor who would clear me it would be very unwise for me to continue to compete with the risks involved. My career has ended prematurely but I’m very grateful for my long list of achievements, I am and will always be ‘Ais the first’ for so many things, my legacy set in stone in the history of Irish mixed martial arts. I am the countries first ever world champion, the first and only female to ever do it. I have and always will give back to the sport which has given me so much. I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart the fans who have supported me tirelessly through various parts of the journey. Without this support there is no sport of MMA as we know it. I would like to thank my good friends and close team mates, there is no substitute for the genuine loyalty built between people over years of blood, sweat and tears.

The Bottom Line: McGregor-Mayweather a Bad Idea for Everyone in MMA, Save One

With his press conference on Saturday in Manchester, England, Conor McGregor made it clear he’s committed to aggressively pursuing a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mayweather himself has been outwardly receptive to the possibility, as well, and it’s no mystery why given the risk/reward ratio for the boxing legend. A McGregor-Mayweather fight would be a box office bonanza; and with the amount of money involved, it’s easy to understand why McGregor himself would be interested. The likely problems with the fight would apply to pretty much everyone else around him, from his sport to his company to his fans. Ardent combat sports fans are savvy enough to recognize the importance of the rules to any fight. A boxer isn’t going to tend to do well under MMA rules, and an MMA fighter isn’t going to tend to thrive under boxing rules. There will of course be the occasional upset, but on balance, it’s a bad bet to compete against someone who has been training for years and years under his or her particular rule set. Combat sports organizations know this, and for years, the ones with the power have protected their athletes against the athletes from other sports.

15’s WMMA Pound-for-Pound Top 10

In less than 14 months, Valentina Shevchenko has put herself on the map among the pound-for-pound elite, and now she's headed for an Ultimate Fighting Championship title shot. Shevchenko pulled out a sweet second-round armbar to tap fellow pound-for-pound entrant Julianna Pena in the UFC on Fox 23 main event on Jan. 28 in Denver. “Bullet” is now 3-1 since entering the UFC in December 2015, with increasingly impressive wins over Sarah Kaufman , Holly Holm and now Pena. With her latest conquest, she rises to No. 4 in these rankings. More importantly, her win over Pena sets up a rematch with the only woman to beat her in the Octagon: UFC women's bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes, our No. 2-ranked pound-for-pound fighter. The Ronda Rousey era is over, and she's gone from this list; The Nunes-Shevchenko rivalry may be what takes the women's bantamweight division into its next great era. Another era could be over soon, too. Our third-ranked entrant, Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino, has been a staple of this list since its launch. However, in spite of her lofty status, she was flagged for a banned substance in an out-of-competition test by the U.

Josh Koscheck to Face Mauricio Alonso at Bellator 172 on Feb. 18 in San Jose

After a couple delays, Josh Koscheck ’s Bellator MMA debut is set for Feb. 18. The California-based promotion announced on Tuesday that Koscheck will face Mauricio Alonso in a main card bout at Bellator 172 . Additionally, a previously announced main card bout pitting Adam Piccolotti against Brent Primus has been canceled after Piccolotti withdrew from the contest due to injury. Bellator 172 takes place at the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., and is headlined by a heavyweight showdown between Fedor Emelianenko and Matt Mitrione . The main card airs on Spike TV at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT, while the preliminary draw will stream on and the Bellator Mobile App. A preliminary middleweight pairing between Anatoly Tokov and Francisco France was also announced on Tuesday. Koscheck signed with Bellator MMA in June 2015 after exiting the UFC on a five-fight losing skid. The former NCAA Division I national champion wrestler was initially paired with Matt Secor at Bellator 148 but had to withdraw from that pairing due to injury, while another ailment forced “Kos” to pull out of a proposed bout against Paul Daley at Bellator 158.

Dana White: Nick Diaz Turned Down Proposed Bout vs. Robbie Lawler

Nick Diaz has been eligible to return to UFC competition since August, but thus far, it appears that nothing the promotion has to offer interests the Stockton, Calif., native. According to UFC President Dana White, Diaz recently balked at a big-ticket showdown with a former welterweight champion. “I offered Nick Diaz the [Robbie] Lawler fight and he turned it down,” White said on the UFC “Unfiltered” podcast. “Lawler accepted the fight. I’m looking for something else for Lawler right now.” Diaz hasn’t competed since facing Anderson Silva at UFC 183 in January 2015. After the bout, he was initially suspended five years and fined $165,000 by the Nevada Athletic Commission for testing positive for marijuana. Diaz eventually reached a settlement with the NAC to reduce the sanction to 18 months and $100,000. Lawler, meanwhile, hasn’t been in action since losing his 170-pound belt to Tyron Woodley at UFC 201 this past July. He was supposed to return against Donald Cerrone at UFC 205 in New York but ultimately withdrew from that bout, citing the need to recover from his knockout defeat to Woodley.

Conor McGregor rips Georges St-Pierre, offers advice to MMAAA |

“I’m watching this union thing, it like a press conference, and I’m like, what the f*ck is going on here?” McGregor said during an hour-long interview in Manchester. “They’re standing up, they’re all wearing the same t-shirt. They’re saying, ‘Conor, please. Conor, please, you know what’s right. Help us out, Conor.’ And Georges [St-Pierre] is saying, ‘Conor’s a good person. I know he gets paid well, but he doesn’t get paid enough.’ And I’m like, what the f*ck are you talking about? “The only reason you’re standing in the middle of that union is because you (St-Pierre) couldn’t get the deal you want. You’re the fakest of everyone up there.” “There needs to be something, I just don’t know what it is,” McGregor said. “I’m focusing on me. I’m focusing on my family’s security, my family’s financial security. That’s all I can do. So I when I saw that, I just thought it was the biggest, fakest load of sh*t I’ve ever seen in my life. So, I don’t know. I wish everyone well, but you need to focus on yourself. You need to stop putting your hand out. Everyone’s hands are out, everyone wants things for free.

Happy 30th Birthday to @RondaRousey We wish you luck in whatever it is you choose to do in the next chapter of your life

The reason I’m giving Nunes the nod is more of the intangibles than anything pen and paper. Sure she’s the bigger fighter with the longer reach but so was Holly Holm. Sure she won the first matchup but just ask Urijah Faber, fighters evolve. No, the real reason Nunes will win this matchup is because she has come into her own. She’s like the Bruce Leroy of WMMA, after she got the title shot against Miesha Tate it was like her head was dunked in the water, and she came out a different fighter. She turned from a humble Brazilian to a brash, outspoken, almost heel type figure. She’s got a quiet confidence that you could see in the Ronda Rousey fight when she knew she was going to destroy her. No posing, just focus. Arm in arm with girlfriend and fellow fighter Nina Ansaroff  , Amanda Nunes is letting the world know that her power is real, and she’s not apologizing for it.
