Check out highlights from Yoel Romero’s knockout of Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 on Saturday in Perth, Australia. Due to missing weight, Romero was not eligible to win the interim UFC middleweight title, but he stormed Rockhold and then finished him, likely still earning a shot at champion Robert Whittaker.

Luke Rockhold Breaks Silence After Yoel Romero Loss at UFC 221 |

Rockhold started strong and appeared to have a solid strategy, chopping away at Romero with low kicks and using his reach advantage to remain out of Romero’s power range. While this worked early on in the fight, he couldn’t remain out of Romero’s range forever.

Conor McGregor, Floyd Mayweather Continue Twitter Feud, Tease MMA Rematch

Just when you thought a match between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor inside the Octagon was a pipe dream, “Money” teased the following: Certified Killa vs Certified Bitch — Floyd Mayweather (@FloydMayweather) February 11, 2018 The photoshopped image posted from Mayweather’s Twitter account features the boxing legend landing a viscous elbow to the head of McGregor in a mixed martial arts match. The caption reads: “certified killa vs certified bitch.” The Irishman didn’t take long to respond: A real elbow in a real fight. — Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) February 11, 2018 His image features a real fight of him landing an elbow to the head of Nate Diaz at UFC 202. The caption reads: “A real elbow in a real fight.” The Irishman is no stranger to Twitter wars with fighters, particularly Mayweather. Luke Rockhold reacts to UFC 221 knockout loss: Yoel Romero 'made of steel'

Matches to Make After UFC 221

Yoel Romero ’s unsettling wax-and-wane approach claimed yet another victim in the disheveled Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight division. The 2000 Olympic silver medalist blew away former 185-pound champion Luke Rockhold with punches in the third round of their UFC 221 main event on Saturday before an announced crowd of 12,437 at Perth Arena in Perth Australia. Romero drew the curtain 1:48 into Round 3, recording the seventh third-round finish of his career. Rockhold appeared to have the upper hand when the fight-ending sequence occurred. The 33-year-old Santa Cruz, California, native had kept Romero at bay with kicks and grown increasingly effective with his jab. However, it all unraveled when the American Top Team brute split the air with a jarring left cross that sent Rockhold to the canvas in a dazed and defenseless state. Romero, 40, followed with a standing-to-ground uppercut that snapped back his counterpart’s head and forced referee Marc Goddard to act on his behalf. In the aftermath of UFC 221 “Romero vs.

Athlete Outfitting Pay for UFC 221: Yoel Romero Pockets $10,000 |

In the main event of this anticipated card, former Olympic silver medalist and long-time UFC middleweight contender Yoel Romero executed one of his best wins to date, clubbing former champion Luke Rockhold to a third-round knockout win . With this win, Romero seems to have secured himself a rematch with the division’s current champion Robert Whittaker .

After Initially Fearing Broken Leg at UFC 221, Yoel Romero Expected to Be ‘Good to Go’ Soon

While Yoel Romero initially feared the worst regarding his injured leg following his win over Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 , it now appears that the Cuban will have a short recovery. Romero did not appear at Saturday’s post-fight press conference because he was transported to the hospital. However, he did conduct a brief interview on Fox Sports 1, where he said he thought he broke his leg in the opening stanza after absorbing several hard leg kicks from his opponent. “In the first round I took two kicks, and I’m pretty sure that broke my leg,” said Romero, who was unable to stand in the Octagon or during his FS1 interview after his third-round knockout of Rockhold in Perth, Australia. Romero may have misjudged the severity of his injury. According to management representative Abe Kawa, Romero will be “good to go” in a “couple weeks.” With @YoelRomeroMMA in the hospital. Leg is fine people couple weeks and he will be good to go — Ibrahim Kawa (@Abraham_kawa) February 11, 2018 “The Soldier of God” adopted a measured pace against Rockhold, and after two competitive rounds, he found the opening he needed in the third stanza.

Rising UFC heavyweight Curtis Blaydes has only suffered a single loss in his mixed martial arts career. The fighter faced a second round TKO loss to Francis Ngannou back in 2016. Having just taken out “The Super Samoan,” Blaydes is ready to claim that Ngannou is a harder striker.

Alexander Volkanovski Calls Out ‘Bullies’ Stephens, Fili After Dominant UFC 221 Win

Alexander Volkanovski announced his presence as a force to be reckoned with in the featherweight division with a dominant victory over Jeremy Kennedy at UFC 221 on Saturday night. The 29-year-old Aussie overwhelmed his previously unbeaten opponent, outlanding Kennedy by a 105-to-11 count in total strikes en route to a technical knockout victory 4:57 into round two. The win improved Alexander “The Great” to 4-0 in the UFC and 17-1 overall, and he believes he has sent a message to the rest of the division. “I haven’t lost a round. I’m walking through these opponents,” Volkanovski said. “No disrespect to my opponents, but I’m just too strong for this division. People think I should be a bantamweight, but look at what I’m doing to the strongest guys in this division. We were both 3-0. A lot of people don’t want to fight us grinders, so I’m a big threat to the division, and I think I got to show that today.” The former Pacific Xtreme Combat champion took Kennedy down in both frames and landed ferocious ground-and-pound from above.

UFC 221 Bonuses: Matthews, Li, Adesanya, ‘Formiga’ Receive $50K Awards

Jake Matthews , Jingliang Li , Israel Adesanya and Jussier da Silva were the recipients of $50,000 post-fight bonuses at UFC 221 in Perth, Australia, on Saturday night. Matthews and Li received “Fight of the Night” honors for their featured welterweight scrap. Matthews dropped his foe in round one and hunted for a rear-naked choke, but “The Leech” survived. In round two, Li briefly turned the tide by gouging Matthews’ eye to escape what appeared to be a tight guillotine choke. Despite no point deduction, Matthews remained unfazed and was able to capture a hard-fought three-round verdict. Elsewhere, Adesanya captured a “Peformance of the Night” award for an impressive Octagon debut against Rob Wilkinson in a preliminary middleweight affair. The Nigerian prospect was able to defend the majority of his opponent’s takedowns throughout the fight before finishing the contest with a barrage of knees and punches 3:37 into round two. Related » Matches to Make After UFC 221 Finally, da Silva earned the evening’s other “Performance of the Night” for his third-round submission of Ben Nguyen at flyweight.

Israel Adesanya: I Had More Hype Than Conor McGregor Before His UFC Debut

If you didn’t know already, Israel Adesanya is a confident sort. The 28-year-old Nigerian improved to 12-0 in his professional career at UFC 221 , as he cruised past Rob Wilkinson in a second-round TKO victory in a preliminary middleweight contest in Perth, Australia on Saturday night. Adesanya, who also owns a 50-5 record as a kickboxer and a 5-1 mark as a boxer, has the makings of a star in the UFC thanks to an entertaining style. Prior to his Octagon debut, “The Last Style Bender” gained some notoriety for a first-round stoppage of UFC and Bellator veteran Melvin Guillard at Australian Fighting Championship on July 28. While Guillard has competed most of his career at lightweight, Wilkinson was a true middleweight and figured to be a better test. Related » Matches to Make After UFC 221 Don’t tell that to Adesanya, who delivered on the hype that preceded him. And he wasn’t afraid to make a comparison to the biggest star in the Las Vegas-based promotion today. “The pressure has been the same since the jump, since 2008 when I started fighting,” Adesanya said.

UFC's Luke Rockhold could move to light heavyweight inside a year

The setback to Romero was a tough start to 2018 for the former champ, who lost his title in June 2016 when Michael Bisping (30-9 MMA, 20-9 UFC) stepped up on short notice and delivered an upset knockout at UFC 199. Rockhold spent the remainder of the year at odds with the UFC over his contract before restructuring his deal. He returned to the octagon this past September and battered ex-WSOF champ David Branch (21-4 MMA, 3-3 UFC) to get back to the win column .

Ben Askren predicts late-2019 showdown with Georges St-Pierre in Montreal

“My main motivation is to prove I’m No. 1 in the world,” Askren recently told MMAjunkie Radio. “I think it will happen, at the Bell Centre (in Montreal). I’ve been No. 1 for the past five years, and I’ve unfortunately never had the chance to prove that fight. It’s the one thing that interests me.”

Damian Janikowski , who captured the bronze medal in wrestling for Poland in the 2012 Summer Olympics, will top the lineup for Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki 43 on April 14. Janikowski does not yet have an opponent for KSW 43, which takes place at the Hala Stulecia in Wroclaw, Poland. Additionally, Roberto Soldic will defend his welterweight title against Dricus Du Plessis , while Michal Andryzak will compete for the vacant heavyweight crown against an as-yet-to-be determined opponent. His sophomore effort was successful as well, as he defeated Antoni Chmielewski by second-round knockout at KSW 41 on Dec. 23. Soldic will be making his first 170-pound championship defense after capturing the belt with a victory over Borys Mankowski at KSW 41. The 23-year-old has won his last seven fights. South Africa’s Du Plessis will make his promotional debut after compiling an 11-1 mark under the Extreme Fighting Championship banner.

UFC 221 Prelims: Jussier da Silva Chokes Ben Nguyen Unconscious in Australia

Jussier got the JUICE! @JussierFormiga with the spinning back-fist to rear-naked choke for the TKO win! #UFC221 — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) February 11, 2018 Jussier da Silva made his case for an Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight title shot, and he did so in dramatic fashion. The former Shooto Americas champion throttled Ben Nguyen in the third round of their UFC 221 “Romero vs. Rockhold” prelim on Saturday at Perth Arena in Perth, Australia. Nguyen (18-7, 4-2 UFC) lost consciousness 1:43 into Round 3, his modest two-fight winning streak at an end. Da Silva (21-5, 7-4 UFC) took down and mounted the South Dakota native in the first round, then withstood an elbow strike that split him open near the hairline in the second. No one could have envisioned what led to the finish. Da Silva countered an early third-round head kick with a perfectly timed spinning backfist that floored the taekwondo black belt and left him vulnerable to the follow-up attack. “Formiga” moved to the back and cinched the fight-ending choke on the still-dazed Nguyen.

Walkouts and logos: Roy Nelson's philosophy on self-marketing in MMA

“If I want to walk out with a honky-tonk band, I can come out with a honky-tonk band,” he said after a training session to prepare for Friday’s event at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. “If I can come out with a Monster energy drink, I can come out with a Monster energy drink. I guess I can’t come out with heroin and do rehab, because that would get me in trouble.”

On last fight of contract, Curtis Blaydes wants 'decent offer,' will entertain Bellator

“I wish I was getting the money he’s getting, but I don’t like to count other people’s pockets, or look in their wallets. It’s his money – he deserves it. I’m sure once I show the UFC I deserve it, I’ll get my due money too. I’m only 26.”

What's to become of you, Mark Hunt?

The market for Hunt’s specific brand of violence still is very strong. He wants to keep doing this well into his mid-40s? And he’s still reasonably competitive, even against guys like Blaydes, who at 26 is almost half his age? Then fine, you know there’ll be someone willing to cut him a check.

As soon as Romero saw an opening in Rockhold’s defense, he leapt forward with a monstrous left hand that floored the former champion against the cage. Romero quickly followed up with another left uppercut that detonated on Rockhold’s chin as he was laid out flat on the canvas — and with that, the former Olympic silver medalist earned his sixth third-round finish in the UFC.
