‘Dada 5000’ and a Mentality Set on Destruction

One of the more unlikely stories in mixed martial arts over the past year involves the rise in popularity of Dhafir Harris . The Florida-based backyard brawler became a Netflix sensation with his “Dawg Fight” documentary -- a gripping account of the life of underground fighters. Though he has been criticized for allegedly attempting to replicate the path Kevin Ferguson , aka “Kimbo Slice,” took to MMA stardom years ago, Harris claims to be his own man. He believes he should have become a bigger personality sooner and blames Ferguson for holding him back. The two have known one another since they were kids. Harris -- who competes under the nickname “Dada 5000” -- thinks he deserves some of the credit for Ferguson’s jump to EliteXC and Bellator MMA headliner. The former friends turned heated rivals will meet in the Bellator 149 co-main event on Friday at the Toyota Center in Houston. “We go all the way back to when we were children,” Harris told “We all grew up together in Miami. He’s a few years older than me, and he used to always run with my brother.

Click here to support Kevin Randleman Memorial Fund by Karen Karenn

I was 11 years old when Kevin won his first NCAA Title. To say he made an impression on me as a young aspiring wrestler in Central Ohio would be an understatement. The legendary stories about Kevin's greatness will never be forgotten, but what I will remember most is that he was always smiling and always happy. I think it is rare to be a certified BA but also remain original enough to simply be yourself and be happy. RIP Kevin Randleman.

The Bottom Line: Bellator Bets Big on the Past

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. For much of Bellator MMA ’s existence, it was a forward-looking organization. The focus was on creating new stars through a tournament format and building around the fighters who proved themselves the best. As its latest “tent pole” event approaches -- Bellator 149 is built around 52-year-old Ken Shamrock vs. 49-year-old Royce Gracie and 42-year-old Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson vs. 38-year-old youngster Dhafir “Dada 5000” Harris -- on Friday in Houston, it’s clear those days are gone. Who is the best in the present has never meant less to Bellator, and the future might as well not exist. For 2016 Bellator, it’s all about squeezing every last drop of juice remaining in the fighters from the past and the distant past. Shamrock and Gracie can pretend that this fight has significance to their legacies, but it just isn’t so. It will say as much about their prime fighting years as would Larry Bird challenging Magic Johnson to a one-on-one game at next year’s NBA All-Star Weekend.

Under the Microscope: Analyzing Heavyweight Greats - Andrei Arlovski

Editor’s note: This is the final installment in a five-part series examining the best of the best in each of the five major MMA weight classes. Heavyweight champions have always been bequeathed the title “Baddest Man on the Planet,” -- and for good reason: With great size comes great power, and nothing is more captivating than feeling the ground quake beneath titanic warriors duking it out. Heavyweight has been a steadily volatile division, with championship belts changing hands like batons. As such, compiling the shortlist was no easy task. Five men -- Tim Sylvia , Frank Mir , Mark Coleman , Alistair Overeem and Don Frye -- barely missed the cut, even though they could all be easily justified in these ranks. As such, they are considered Greatest of All-Time candidates, despite not being on the list. Ultimately, this is a statistical analysis first and foremost, and all of the honorable exclusions were found lacking in the same basic principal: Their win-loss ratios, compared to the strength of opponents faced, were lower than everyone else.

Andre Ward and the Art of Accustomed Excellence

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle once observed, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” Excellence in the ring is something Andre Ward was as accustomed to demonstrating as the simple act of breathing in and out. Now nearly 32 years of age, he has not lost a boxing match since he was 12. As an amateur, the Oakland, California, native was a two-time USA Boxing national champion as a middleweight and the only United States fighter to win a gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics. If anything, he has been even more impressive in the professional ranks, compiling a 28-0 record with 15 victories inside the distance, five of them coming in the Super Six World Boxing Classic, which he capped when he decisively outpointed England’s Carl Froch in the final on Dec. 17, 2011. His body of work that year -- he also scored a unanimous decision over former IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham -- was good enough to earn him “Fighter of the Year” recognition from the Boxing Writers Association of America and The Ring magazine.

MMA Greats of the States | Colorado: Donald Cerrone

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. For example, reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Robbie Lawler may have been born in San Diego, but few would recognize him as a Californian. * * * There are plenty of fighters from which to choose when discussing the state of Colorado, but a certain “Cowboy” stands out above the rest. Born in Colorado Springs, Donald Cerrone grew up fighting as a kid, so it was a natural move for him to enter the combat arts.

UFC 197 Update: Strawweights Jessica Aguilar, Juliana Lima Paired for April 23

Former World Series of Fighting champion Jessica Aguilar will make her sophomore Octagon appearance at UFC 197 against Brazilian striker Juliana Lima . UFC officials confirmed the matchup on Monday following a report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal . UFC 197 takes place April 23 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, with a light heavyweight title bout between reigning titlist Daniel Cormier and ex-champ Jon Jones set to headline the pay-per-view card. Aguilar will once again go in search of her first UFC victory after dropping a unanimous decision to top contender Claudia Gadelha in her post-WSOF debut. Prior to that loss, the American Top Team product had gone unbeaten in her previous 10 fights over a four-year span, including a 5-1 run with Bellator MMA . Lima could be looking toward 115-pound title contention as she goes for her third straight victory. Since falling to current champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk in her 2014 debut, “Ju Thai” has won back-to-back bouts, though she has been out of action since topping previously unbeaten Ericka Almeida in May 2015.

Mickey Gall: 'I might ruin MMA' for CM Punk

"I remember hearing it was like an eight-fight deal or something," Gall said about Punk's UFC contract. "I definitely think after he fights me, it's going to sour him to the experience. I definitely think he'll probably take more appreciation of (professional) wrestling. Honestly the truth is I really respect him for coming in there and accepting this against me. I think it's not going to fare very well for him. He might be done. I'm sure there's more money to be made off him so I wouldn't be surprised. It would be his call and that could be caused by what I'm going to do to him.

The Savage Truth: Sterling’s Silver

Editor's note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Aljamain Sterling hit free agency in December after his fourth consecutive victory in the UFC’s bantamweight division. In the lead-up to his last bout, the 26-year-old New Yorker had been a vocal critic of the way he was promoted and how often he fought. A lot of interested observers thought he was headed for greener pastures, but that plan hit a snag when other promoters declined to bring the big-money offers that would make it profitable for the young, undefeated prospect to exit the safer confines of the world’s top MMA promotion. Just two short months ago, it seemed like a foregone conclusion the UFC was going to let one of their top young fighters walk after fighting out his contract. It’s something that happens rarely, if ever. How did we go from there to Sterling re-upping with the UFC in such a short time? What does it say about the market when an ascending star has to settle for nothing more than a token raise, even with the threat of free agency in his back pocket? With more fighters talking about testing the market, I have to wonder how the outcome of Sterling’s negotiations will play in other fighter’s minds.

The Monster: A Sherdog Retrospective

Kevin Randleman was one of MMA’s Incredible Hulks, so when he had died on Feb. 11 at the age of 44, it was a shock. The mixed martial arts community was quick to pour out its love for the man known as “The Monster.” A two-time NCAA national champion wrestler at Ohio State University, Randleman touched off his mixed martial arts career in 1996 under the Universal Vale Tudo Fighting banner in Brazil. He competed in three vale tudo tournaments covering eight fights during the first eight months of his career. The Sandusky, Ohio, native made his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut in 1997 and claimed a unanimous decision over Maurice Smith at UFC 19. Randleman then captured the heavyweight crown with a five-round verdict over Pete Williams at UFC 23 a little less than nine months later. He defended the title once -- he defeated Pedro Rizzo at UFC 26 -- before surrendering it to Randy Couture in November 2000. Randleman surfaced in Pride Fighting Championships in 2002 and loss seven of his 11 fights within the Japan-based organization.

Brendan habitually mispronouncing every major UFC fighter's name on the roster is a nice touch, too. I also want to hear more about Bryan's mad greco skills. Reasons to watch Fight Night Pittsburgh this Sunday

Donald Cerrone’s eight-fight win streak may be bookended by a pair of losses to current lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos, but let’s not forget about the star power and stopping power of “Cowboy.” Cerrone leaves behind a legacy at 155 pounds as one of the most game and entertaining fighters of the past decade. Now he moves up to 170 to start a new journey, and another “Cowboy” is making the move up with him to fight for the name that’s made them both famous.   Alex Oliveira has won three in a row and two of those wins have come by finish. He’s quickly becoming an exciting must-see fighter, and he is excited to challenge Cerrone, who he calls the fake cowboy. Both fighters have power in their hands and feet, and this intriguing five-round main event is just one of the reasons to watch Fight Night Pittsburgh live and free on FS1 on a special Sunday fight card beginning at 9 p.m./6 p.m. ET/PT on Feb. 21. Main card There are a number of fighters on this card with a lot to gain with a win in Pittsburgh, but maybe none more than No.

As a result, Alex Oliveira will replace Cabral on the May 30 card, which takes place at Goiana Arena in Goiana, Brazil and is headlined by a welterweight showdown between Carlos Condit and Thiago Alves . A former EliteXC lightweight champion, Noons last appeared at “The Ultimate Fighter 20” finale, where an inadvertent eye poke against Daron Cruickshank resulted in their lightweight matchup being declared a no contest. Prior to that, Noons had scored back-to-back victories over Sam Stout and George Sotiropoulos in his previous two Octagon outings.
