Germaine de Randamie Talks ‘Dirty Fighter’ Criticisms on Facebook, Offers Holly Holm Rematch

The Ultimate Fighting Championship 's inaugural women's featherweight champion insists she's not a dirty fighter. Last Saturday at UFC 208, Germaine de Randamie earned three 48-47 scorecards to take a unanimous decision over former UFC women's bantamweight champion Holly Holm to become the promotion's first women's 145-pound champion. However, the Dutchwoman's victory was not without controversy, as “The Iron Lady” rocked Holm after the horn sounded to end the second round, visibly rocking Holm. Just over five minutes later, de Randamie again landed a flurry of punches after the third round ended, sparking debate as to whether it was intentional and whether referee Todd Anderson should have taken a point from “The Iron Lady.” Monday, de Randamie took to Facebook to explain herself , claiming the late blows were not intentional. “I should be on the highest of highs right now but after my long flight home to Holland I couldn't stop thinking about the events that took place last night and some of the critics trying to take away what should be one of the greatest moments of my career,” wrote de Randamie.

Opinion: Cheating Pays

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Around the same time we were D.A.R.E.’d to resist drugs in elementary school, we were also taught that “cheaters never prosper.” These are strange messages to process for most pre-teens. Apparently, the enemy was among us -- standing in line for the slide, punching the tetherball, swinging from the monkey bars -- ready to pass out free drugs and/or hurriedly copy answers onto their arithmetic worksheets. Aside from creating an atmosphere of suspicion on our playground, both messages fell upon ears that weren’t so much deaf as they were clogged with fart jokes. As is the case with all good advice given to little kids, it wasn’t long before they were inverted for comedic effect. “D.A.R.E. to DO drugs,” the playgrounds laughed. “Cheaters ALWAYS prosper.” Saying the opposite of what you’re supposed to say is one of the earliest lessons in humor.

The Walkmen: UFC 208 ‘Holm vs. de Randamie’

The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday returned to the Empire State, as UFC 208 invaded the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The event was headlined by a battle between Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie for the inaugural women’s featherweight championship. The musical tastes of the combatants provided the backdrop. Blair Douglas’ Celtic anthem “The Landlord’s Walk” announced Holm’s arrival, as the former bantamweight queen attempted to join Randy Couture , B.J. Penn and Conor McGregor as the only two-division champions in UFC history. Meanwhile, de Randamie confidently strolled to the cage underneath Deetox and Lange Frans’ “Het Land Van” ahead of the most significant opportunity of her MMA career ( online betting ). Other standout selections included The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Juicy” ( Derek Brunson ), AC/DC’s “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock & Roll)” ( Jared Cannonier ), Gary Clark Jr.’s “Numb” ( Ian McCall ), Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Bad Moon Rising” ( Jim Miller ), The Beastie Boys’ “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” ( Phillipe Nover ), Johnny Cash’s “The Man Comes Around” ( Tim Boetsch ), Nas’ “Take it in Blood” ( Dustin Poirier ), Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Brooklyn Zoo” ( Jarred Brooks ) and Sizzla’s “Solid as a Rock” ( Randy Brown ).

Anderson Silva Thought He Won Two Rounds Against Derek Brunson at UFC 208

While many of those watching the fight might not agree, Anderson Silva thought he deserved the decision he received against Derek Brunson at UFC 208 . Silva defeated Brunson via unanimous decision in Saturday’s co-main event at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, giving “The Spider” his first true Octagon triumph since October 2012. * While judges Doug Crosby, Eric Colon and Derek Cleary all submitted scorecards in favor of the Brazilian star, 19 of the 23 media members tracked by MMADecisions.com had Brunson winning the fight. “I think I win the [first] two rounds. The last round I don’t think so,” Silva said at the post-fight press conference. “But that’s a good question for the judges because I defended takedowns. The last round, my opponent put me on the ground, but I attacked more.” Brunson, who has lost two straight following a five-bout winning streak, disagreed with both Silva’s and the cageside judges’ assessment of the fight. “Everyone is telling me that I won. I feel terrible. It’s not Anderson’s fault or the UFC’s fault.

Justin Willis Deemed Medically Unfit to Fight, UFC 208 Bout vs. Marcin Tybura Canceled

The UFC 208 lineup is down to 11 bouts after losing a heavyweight fight at Friday morning’s weigh-ins. According to a statement from the promotion, Justin Willis was ruled medically unfit to fight, and his matchup with Marcin Tybura was pulled from the card. Willis had replaced Luis Henrique Barbosa de Oliveira on short notice earlier in the week. The UFC confirmed that Tybura, who weighed in at 245.4 pounds, will receive his show money for the event. Tybura vs. Willis was scheduled to take place on the UFC Fight Pass-streamed portion of the preliminary card. “Hey everyone, I want you to hear from me first, I did everything I could to make weight for the fight this weekend but due to the short notice my body shut down during the weight cut and the UFC doctors wouldn't clear me to fight,” Willis wrote on his Facebook page. “I will be back in the UFC with a full camp very soon. Thank you to everyone at the UFC, all of their staff have been great. I want the same opponent or anybody else will suffice. I will be ready.

Opinion: Onward to Bellamount

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * The Ultimate Fighting Championship has its first pay-per-view card of 2017 on Saturday, and on top of that, the promotion is going to crown its first women's featherweight champion. That hardly means the week entirely belongs to the UFC, though. It was nothing the promotion could help, nothing it had a say in, but Bellator MMA 's future became a talking point this week when parent company Viacom revealed that in early 2018, Bellator's television partner, Spike, would be re-branded as the Paramount Network. Being that the “Paramount Network” doesn't necessarily sound like anything on which fights would appear, MMA fans were immediately curious what it meant for the No. 2 promotion's future. The re-branding efforts are not so much just about Spike, lest you think that Viacom simply got sick of the cable channel having a reputation for having reruns of “Cops” and the guilty pleasure of “Bar Rescue.

UFC 208: By the Numbers

Germaine de Randamie is now officially in the Ultimate Fighting Championship history books. The Dutch kickboxing specialist became the promotion’s inaugural women’s featherweight champion in a unanimous decision victory over Holly Holm in the UFC 208 headliner at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday night. In a sometimes ugly, sometimes controversial affair, “The Iron Lady” was able to hang on against a game Holm as the world’s No. 1 featherweight, Cristiane Justino , looked on from her cageside seat. For now, de Randamie will get some time to bask in the glow of her championship victory. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 208, with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com ( online betting ). 80: Significant strikes landed by Germaine de Randamie in the 25-minute contest. Holm, meanwhile, landed 77. De Randamie outlanded her foe 19 to 13 in round two, 16 to 12 in round four and 17 to 16 in round five. Holm outlanded de Randamie 18 to 12 in round one and 18 to 16 in round three. 144 Total strikes landed by de Randamie.

Matches to Make After UFC 208

Not since Bas Rutten in 1999 has Holland had an Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholder it could call its own. Enter Germaine de Randamie . The Dutch muay Thai stylist outstruck Holly Holm across five rounds to pocket a unanimous decision and claim the inaugural women’s featherweight championship in the UFC 208 main event on Saturday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. All three judges scored it 48-47 for de Randamie, though the paths they took to get there varied somewhat: Sal D’Amato and Jeff Mullin gave her Rounds 1-3, while Chris Lee awarded “The Iron Lady” the first, second and fourth rounds. Statistics also indicate the fight was close. According to FightMetric data, de Randamie landed more total strikes (144-122) and more significant strikes (80-77) than “The Preacher’s Daughter” but not by wide margins. She also denied all nine takedown attempts tried against her. Even so, a case can be made for Holm. The Jackson-Wink MMA mainstay wrapped a head kick around de Randamie’s head late in the third round and dropped her to a knee with a straight left in the fifth, all while luring her into one suffocating clinch exchange after another.

David Bixenspan: UFC 208’s Odd Matchmaking

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Holly Holm vs. Germaine de Randamie is, in many ways, one of the strangest Ultimate Fighting Championship title fights ever. On one hand, in the cage, it’s a great fight: The most decorated boxer in UFC history against one of a handful of the most decorated kickboxers. They match up in interesting ways; the bout should be really entertaining, and there are some interesting storylines that you can add to the fight based strictly on their combat sports histories. On the other hand? There’s everything else. The UFC needed a main event for UFC 208 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn ( online betting ), their second card in New York City proper (they had run in the New York City market before at the Izod Center and Prudential Center in New Jersey). Holm was the biggest star immediately available and fighting Cris Cyborg for a new UFC Featherweight Championship.
