Quinton Jackson Returns to Bellator MMA Following ‘Amicable Agreement’

Bellator MMA ’s light heavyweight division just got a little bit more interesting. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will be returning to the Bellator “following an amicable agreement to settle the litigation between the two parties,” according to a statement released by the California-based promotion on Tuesday. A timetable for Jackson’s return to action was not given. Jackson initially signed with Bellator in 2013 and won three straight fights under the promotion’s banner before announcing that he had terminated his contract in December 2014. Bellator then filed a preliminary injunction to prevent “Rampage” from fighting in the UFC, but that ruling was eventually overturned , allowing the ex-light heavyweight king to compete at UFC 186 in April 2015. While Jackson said that terms of his original Bellator deal were not fulfilled, he reportedly received a number of lucrative provisions , including a 2013 Tesla Sport worth $129,00, a $100,000 signing bonus and guaranteed fight purses beginning at $200,000. He also received a $200,000 bonus from Bellator’s first-ever pay-per-view offering even though it did not exceed 190,000 buys as his contract stipulated.

The Bottom Line: Bellator Bets Big on the Past

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. For much of Bellator MMA ’s existence, it was a forward-looking organization. The focus was on creating new stars through a tournament format and building around the fighters who proved themselves the best. As its latest “tent pole” event approaches -- Bellator 149 is built around 52-year-old Ken Shamrock vs. 49-year-old Royce Gracie and 42-year-old Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson vs. 38-year-old youngster Dhafir “Dada 5000” Harris -- on Friday in Houston, it’s clear those days are gone. Who is the best in the present has never meant less to Bellator, and the future might as well not exist. For 2016 Bellator, it’s all about squeezing every last drop of juice remaining in the fighters from the past and the distant past. Shamrock and Gracie can pretend that this fight has significance to their legacies, but it just isn’t so. It will say as much about their prime fighting years as would Larry Bird challenging Magic Johnson to a one-on-one game at next year’s NBA All-Star Weekend.

UFC Battle Lines: Silva vs Bisping

UFC Battle Lines: Silva vs. Bisping takes an intimate look at the lives of Anderson “The Spider” Silva and Michael “The Count” Bisping as they get set to face off at UFC Fight Night London. Examining the experiences and inspirations of these two legendary fighters in a refreshingly candid manner, fans new and old alike will gain insight into their individual journeys before the long-awaited battle goes down, only on UFC Fight Pass.

‘Dada 5000’ and a Mentality Set on Destruction

One of the more unlikely stories in mixed martial arts over the past year involves the rise in popularity of Dhafir Harris . The Florida-based backyard brawler became a Netflix sensation with his “Dawg Fight” documentary -- a gripping account of the life of underground fighters. Though he has been criticized for allegedly attempting to replicate the path Kevin Ferguson , aka “Kimbo Slice,” took to MMA stardom years ago, Harris claims to be his own man. He believes he should have become a bigger personality sooner and blames Ferguson for holding him back. The two have known one another since they were kids. Harris -- who competes under the nickname “Dada 5000” -- thinks he deserves some of the credit for Ferguson’s jump to EliteXC and Bellator MMA headliner. The former friends turned heated rivals will meet in the Bellator 149 co-main event on Friday at the Toyota Center in Houston. “We go all the way back to when we were children,” Harris told “We all grew up together in Miami. He’s a few years older than me, and he used to always run with my brother.

Ken Shamrock and a Rivalry’s Old Wounds

Those who fancy themselves as old-school MMA fans have a soft spot in their hearts for Ken Shamrock . They remember the glory days of “The World’s Most Dangerous Man” at a time when Ultimate Fighting Championship events were defined by flying teeth, groin shots and various other types of barbarism. When the muscle-bound shoot fighter first entered the Octagon back in 1993, many expected Shamrock to steamroll the competition on his way to becoming the UFC 1 tournament winner. Of course, that never happened, as he succumbed to the submission wizardry of a lanky Brazilian named Royce Gracie in the semifinals. The two rivals met again atop UFC 5 in the promotion’s first super fight, and they battled to a draw after 36 minutes. Their score has never been settled. Shamrock will meet Gracie for a third time in the Bellator 149 headliner on Friday at the Toyota Center in Houston. They will enter the cage with the Brazilian holding a 1-0-1 edge in their head-to-head series. Shamrock, 52, returned from a five-year absence in June, only to be unceremoniously knocked out by Kevin Ferguson , aka “Kimbo Slice.

The Monster: A Sherdog Retrospective

Kevin Randleman was one of MMA’s Incredible Hulks, so when he had died on Feb. 11 at the age of 44, it was a shock. The mixed martial arts community was quick to pour out its love for the man known as “The Monster.” A two-time NCAA national champion wrestler at Ohio State University, Randleman touched off his mixed martial arts career in 1996 under the Universal Vale Tudo Fighting banner in Brazil. He competed in three vale tudo tournaments covering eight fights during the first eight months of his career. The Sandusky, Ohio, native made his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut in 1997 and claimed a unanimous decision over Maurice Smith at UFC 19. Randleman then captured the heavyweight crown with a five-round verdict over Pete Williams at UFC 23 a little less than nine months later. He defended the title once -- he defeated Pedro Rizzo at UFC 26 -- before surrendering it to Randy Couture in November 2000. Randleman surfaced in Pride Fighting Championships in 2002 and loss seven of his 11 fights within the Japan-based organization.

MMA Greats of the States | Colorado: Donald Cerrone

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. For example, reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Robbie Lawler may have been born in San Diego, but few would recognize him as a Californian. * * * There are plenty of fighters from which to choose when discussing the state of Colorado, but a certain “Cowboy” stands out above the rest. Born in Colorado Springs, Donald Cerrone grew up fighting as a kid, so it was a natural move for him to enter the combat arts.

Axed: Nevada Athletic Commission Suspends Wanderlei Silva for Three Years

It looks like former Pride Fighting Championships ace Wanderlei Silva will have to wait quite a bit longer if he is to make a return to the combat sports as a competitor. The Nevada Athletic Commission voted to suspend “The Axe Murderer” for three years Wednesday morning following an oft-delayed re-hearing on a lifetime ban he was plastered with 17 months ago. Silva was given the ban from the commission for allegedly fleeing his Las Vegas gym when an official arrived to collect a random urine sample for his proposed fight with Chael Sonnen . When his lifetime ban from the NAC was overturned by a Nevada judge nine months ago, there was a glimmer of light that he might be able to fight again. But things didn’t work out favorably for the Brazilian fan favorite as the panel this morning, led by commission chair Anthony Marnell, voted to continue to keep him out of action. Silva was not present at the hearing and was represented by his attorney Ross Goodman, but Marnell countered Goodman’s arguments that Wanderlei was unlicensed at the time of the sample collection attempt, calling them “irrelevant.

Sherdog’s Top 10: Mismatches - Top 10

Aside from the heavily favored fighters who trounce their opposition, virtually no one enjoys watching an egregious mismatch. The outcome is almost never in doubt, and the only purpose it serves is to make the superior fighter look good at the expense of a far lesser foe. Glaring mismatches often result in highlight-reel finishes, and while those are fun to watch, such happenings do not take away from the pointlessness of it all. Over the years, there have been countless mismatches, and the latest installment in the Sherdog Top 10 series series sets out to dig up the worst of the worst. Only major promotions were included, as mismatches on the regional level are too numerous to count: Soccer Mom KO, anyone? *** HONORABLE MENTIONS: Norifumi Yamamoto vs. Tony Valente (K-1 Max World Grand Prix 2004 Opening Round); Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Gilles Arsene (Pride 23); Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen (UFC 159); Gary Goodridge vs. Yoshiaki Yatsu (Pride 16) *** Number 10 » Kerr-Stott

WSOF Bantamweight Champ Marlon Moraes Open to Fights at 145, 155 Pounds

Following a 2015 during which he fought twice, World Series of Fighting bantamweight king Marlon Moraes is willing to change weight classes in order to have a more active 2016 campaign. Moraes defends his 135-pound title against Joseph Barajas in the WSOF 28 headliner on Saturday at Next Level Sports Complex in Garden Grove, Calif. The evening’s main card airs on NBC Sports Network at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT. The Floridian would like to follow the blueprint provided by the UFC’s Donald Cerrone , who has one of the most frequent fighting itineraries in the sport today. Thus far, Moraes has never fought more than three times in a calendar year for WSOF. “My dream is to fight five times a year, six,” Moraes told “I’m a guy like Cowboy. I’m a big fan of those guys. I don’t pick fights; I want to fight. If they want to see me at [145], if want to see me at [155] for short notice, I can fight. I’m a guy that the organization wants to have. I’m training all year. I need two to three weeks to be ready. My dream is to fight five times this year, but I’ll be very happy with four.

Tachi Palace Fights returns on Thursday with another edition of MMA action inside the Tachi Palace in Lemoore, California. At Wednesday’s weigh-ins, all but one combatant made weight. Tachi Palace Fights 26 will be headlined by a bantamweight battle between Rolando Velasco and Joe Neal . Both fighters made weight rather easily, paving the way for their showdown. At the scales, Velasco officially clocked in at 135 pounds while his adversary came in at 134.8. The co-featured bout will see lightweights Cleber Luciano and Danny Navarro go at it. Both men were on point, as well; Luciano tipped the scale at 155 pounds while Navarro came in at 155.6. TPF 26 will be streamed live on starting at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. ‘Big’ John McCarthy Elected as Boxing Judge by Nevada Athletic Commission

John McCarthy, the most recognizable and longest-tenured referee in all of American mixed martial arts, will take the next step in his professional career in the coming weeks. At a meeting with the Nevada Athletic Commission Wednesday morning in Las Vegas, the commissioners voted unanimously to elect “Big” John as a professional boxing judge. Though McCarthy is known almost primarily as a referee, the retired Los Angeles law enforcement agent has acted as a cageside judge for many smaller events throughout the years. But with the NAC approving him to be a ringside judge for professional boxing in Nevada, he’ll have much more on his plate. McCarthy, who has long been considered to be as great an official as there is across the country, immediately adds some much-needed credibility to a commission that has been languishing under scrutiny and suffering from an almost unshakeable image of ineptitude. The move also runs perpendicular with Tony Weeks, one of boxing’s greatest all-around referees, who has been sitting the judge’s seat for MMA and kickboxing for several years. There was no announcement as to when McCarthy’s first assignment as a boxing judge for the NAC will be.

Video: Kimbo Slice, Dada 5000, alleged baby nuts steal show at Bellator 149 presser

Slice to Dada 5000: “Be yourself, [expletive]. Don’t do what I do.” –  The moment that kicked the fireworks off. As Slice walked to his chair, he turned to Dada 5000 and threw out the line. It is in keeping with Slice’s standard talk regardling Dada 5000, that the man is just a low-rent version of himself who stepped up after Kimbo left the streetfighting game.

The Savage Truth: Sterling’s Silver

Editor's note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Aljamain Sterling hit free agency in December after his fourth consecutive victory in the UFC’s bantamweight division. In the lead-up to his last bout, the 26-year-old New Yorker had been a vocal critic of the way he was promoted and how often he fought. A lot of interested observers thought he was headed for greener pastures, but that plan hit a snag when other promoters declined to bring the big-money offers that would make it profitable for the young, undefeated prospect to exit the safer confines of the world’s top MMA promotion. Just two short months ago, it seemed like a foregone conclusion the UFC was going to let one of their top young fighters walk after fighting out his contract. It’s something that happens rarely, if ever. How did we go from there to Sterling re-upping with the UFC in such a short time? What does it say about the market when an ascending star has to settle for nothing more than a token raise, even with the threat of free agency in his back pocket? With more fighters talking about testing the market, I have to wonder how the outcome of Sterling’s negotiations will play in other fighter’s minds.

Ronda Rousey files trademark for expletive filled catchphrase

Ronda Rousey is adding to her growing media empire with a very unique trademark that was filed in her name this week.

Holm on Rousey’s Suicide Remark: ‘It’s Something You Have to Dig Through on Your Own’

Before Holly Holm was formally introduced at a press conference in Albuquerque, N.M., on Tuesday afternoon, her UFC 193 triumph over Ronda Rousey was replayed on a pair of projection screens inside Legends Theater at Route 66 Casino. To say the new UFC women’s bantamweight champ enjoyed the presentation wouldn’t be entirely accurate. Instead, Holm used the time to critique her performance, one that turned out to be one of last year’s most shocking and dominant efforts. “It’s like, ‘Chill out, you already know what happens,’” Holm said sheepishly. “I’m always looking for holes in my game, things that I didn’t do perfect. That’s what we’re doing right now: perfecting some of the things that I didn’t do just right in that fight. Yes it was awesome, turned out in my favor and everything we worked on panned out in the fight, but there are things to perfect, things to get better at and that’s what we’re working on for this next fight.” Holm, of course, has moved on from Rousey for the time being as she prepares to make her first title defense against Miesha Tate at UFC 196 in Las Vegas on March 5.

Augusto Mendes to Meet Cody Garbrandt on Short Notice at UFC Fight Night Pittsburgh

Cody Garbrandt will remain on the UFC Fight Night Pittsburgh bill, as Augusto Mendes has agreed to face the Team Alpha Male member on short notice. Promotion officials confirmed the matchup after John Lineker withdrew from the contest when he contracted dengue fever . UFC Fight Night takes place at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh on Sunday and is headlined by a welterweight title pitting Donald Cerrone against Alex Oliveira . A Legacy Fighting Championship veteran, Mendes was supposed to make his promotional debut at UFC Fight Night in Boston on Jan. 17 but had to withdraw from a bout against Charles Rosa after suffering an injury. “Tanquinho” is unbeaten in five pro outings, including three under the Legacy FC banner. Garbrandt is 7-0 since beginning his pro career in 2012. “No Love” debuted in the Octagon with a third-round stoppage of Marcus Brimage at UFC 182 before outpointing Enrique Briones in his most recent appearance at UFC 189 this past July.
