Rashad Evans out another six to seven months after second knee surgery

A bout at UFC 170 against Daniel Cormier was cancelled a little more than a week before the event when Evans injured his knee. Early estimates were that he’d be out for a month, but news that he’d require ACL surgery meant a longer recovery period.

The Fighter & The Kid

This podcast has jumped to the top of my UFC/MMA podcast list - but c'mon, once a week?. I really feel like Brendan and Bryan should be able to do at least 2 eps a week, or maybe 2 hours a pop - I mean, what else do these guys have to do during the day? Brendan habitually mispronouncing every major UFC fighter's name on the roster is a nice touch, too. I also want to hear more about Bryan's mad greco skills. I think he should do each episode shirtless.

USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie rankings, Feb. 18: Some new names in the ranks

To the best of our ability, fighters will be ranked in their primary weight class. Catchweight fights and bouts outside the fighter's primary weight class can have a positive or negative impact on the ranking. However, fighters can be ranked in only one weight class at a given time, and in most cases, they won't be ranked in a new weight class until they've had their first fight at that weight.

Another Oil Spill in West Virginia, So Why Are We Debating This?

Any time there are plans to build a new refinery or plant that involves oil, gas or some other carbon-based energy material, the company involved (and possibly local elected officials) will call a public meeting and assure people who live near the proposed facility that the enterprise is perfectly safe and the company will take all the necessary precautions to make sure there is never, ever an accident. And on top of that, the environmental protection arm of the local government will keep close tabs on the whole thing (even though said environmental protection arm is probably underfunded and understaffed).

Judge Grants FOIA Exemption for FBI Files on Plot to Kill Occupy Houston Leaders

VICE notes that , at first, FBI Freedom of Information Act specialist David Hardy attempted to invoke a national security exemption pertaining to a terrorism investigation into activities by Occupy Houston as his rationale for refusing to release the documents, which Judge Rosemary M. Collyer of the US District Court for the District of Columbia rejected, saying, “At no point does Mr. Hardy supply specific facts as to the basis for the FBI’s belief that the Occupy protestors [sic] might have been engaged in terroristic or other criminal activity… Neither the word ‘terrorism’ nor the phrase ‘advocating the overthrow of the government’ are talismanic, especially where FBI purports to be investigating individuals who ostensibly are engaged in protected First Amendment activity.”

Invicta president Shannon Knapp: Ronda Rousey vs. Cris Cyborg is 'closer than it has ever been'

The situation is a difficult one for Knapp. Of course, she has the best interests of Invicta at heart, but as a pioneer of women's MMA herself, she'd like nothing more than to see Rousey vs. Justino happen. Knapp predicted early last year that the fight would have happened in 2014 and calls it her "all-time fight," as in the one she wants to see the most in the future.

What Happens in Vegas: High School Legend Tony Sanchez Takes Aim at Hapless UNLV — and Coaching History

More than on any other factor, UNLV’s gamble on Sanchez, and vice versa, is based precisely on that kind of trust. Sanchez boasts a connection and familiarity with his adopted hometown that none of his predecessors brought to the job or managed to develop while they were there. The most daunting obstacle in the Rebels’ path out of the cellar isn’t money or talent — it’s apathy, a lingering void in which fund-raising and recruiting are impossible to cultivate. Sanchez has hurled himself at that challenge armed with energy, confidence, and a track record as the biggest fish in a vastly smaller pond. Above all else, he has the job because he’s the only person in the city with a real shot at persuading Las Vegas to think of itself as a football town.

Bellator 134’s Michael Page Learned Valuable Lessons from Frustrating Fight

Michael Page says he is still improving as a mixed martial artist. | Photo: Keith Mills/ Michael Page ’s unblemished resume remained intact following a triumph over Nah-Shon Burrell at Bellator 128 , but it was far from his most aesthetically pleasing performance. Burrell neutralized much of Page’s flashy offense by closing the distance and repeatedly pressing his foe against the fence. The Strikeforce veteran did little else distinguish himself, however, which frustrated both those in attendance that night at Winstar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla., as well as Page himself. Burrell’s efforts ultimately did not prove fruitful, as Page landed the fight’s most meaningful strikes en route to a unanimous decision victory. The fact that Page was forced to go the distance for the first time in his professional career wasn’t so disappointing. After all, he had to prove that he could swim in deep waters after finishing each of his first six opponents inside of one round. What irked Page the most was that Burrell’s pre-fight banter foreshadowed fireworks that never materialized.

Edson Barboza: Family First

Edson Barboza has had a busy few months. In November, he traveled to Austin, Texas to share the Octagon with Bobby Green in a pivotal matchup in the highly competitive 155-pound ranks. Prepared for the California native’s in-fight commentary track, the Brazilian employed a stick-and-move approach that produced a unanimous decision victory and a promotion to No. 6 in the lightweight rankings. A few weeks later, he became a father for the first time, as his wife Bruna gave birth to a happy, healthy baby boy the couple named Noah. Late last month, the proud new papa celebrated his 29th birthday with friends and family in New Jersey, enjoying a home cooked meal, but passing on the cake as this weekend’s showdown with Michael Johnson hovered on the horizon. “I didn’t enjoy the cake at the time, but after my fight I may have one,” Barboza says before he carries a 5-1 record over his last six fights into his third consecutive co-main event assignment in Porto Alegre, Brazil against Johnson. The surging contender’s path to the UFC was a little different than the traditional route taken by many of his countrymen.

Frankie Edgar Opens as Betting Favorite Against Urijah Faber at UFC Fight Night Manila

Bookmakers expect Frankie Edgar to prevail in his next bout. | Photo: Dave Mandel/ Frankie Edgar is the betting favorite in his upcoming featherweight bout against Urijah Faber at UFC Fight Night “Edgar vs. Faber.” Two bookmakers have released their opening lines for the main event fight between Edgar and Faber, and both have listed the Team Alpha Male fighter as the underdog. The five-round scrap will headline the UFC’s first trip to the Philippines on May 16. According to , the broker 5Dimes currently lists Edgar as the favorite at -280, while SportBet puts the odds at -268. On the opposite end, “The California Kid” is getting play at +200 and +212. In layman’s terms, a bet of $280 or $268 on Edgar would net you an additional $100, while a $100 wager on Faber would earn $200 or $212. Anderson Silva's failed tests 'prompted' UFC to speed up action against PEDs

With the UFC holding a press conference on Wednesday to declare its revamped plan to combat the use of performance-enhancing drugs, it turns out that its record-breaking champion Anderson Silva was the catalyst for change. During the hour-long press conference, in which UFC president Dana White , CEO Lorenzo Fertitta and COO Lawrence Epstein vowed to increase enhanced testing and enact harsher penalties for users of PEDs, it was made clear that Silva’s positive tests from UFC 183 prompted the action. Silva tested positive for drostanolone and androstane on a Jan. 9 out-of-competition test, and later failed for drostanolone in the post-fight test, along with the banned substances Oxazepam and Temazepam. As the UFC officials declared the measures they would take to help rid the sport of PEDs, the shock of Silva’s positive test was brought up a couple of times. "What happened was we started spending half a million dollars on out of competition testing," White said. "And I think when a guy like Anderson Silva gets caught, it definitely sends a message. I think that shocked the entire MMA community and the sports world.

UFC Introduces Revamped Drug Testing, Advocates Harsher Penalties for Positive Tests

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will take significant steps to implement a more stringent drug-testing program later this year. During a press conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday, UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, President Dana White and Chief Operating Officer Lawrence Epstein laid out a plan that will officially take effect on July 1. At that time, all fighters on the UFC roster -- approximately 585 total, according to the promotion -- will be subject to testing by an independent third party using World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) testing standards. The UFC is currently in discussions with several drug testing organizations in order to establish random drug testing protocol by that date. Exactly which third-party organization the promotion will partner with has yet to be determined, and Fertitta was unable to reveal any of the candidates due to confidentiality agreements. Fighters competing in championship and headlining bouts will be subject to even greater scrutiny, as they will all be subjected to enhanced out-of-competition testing beginning in July.

In Brazil, very few children can speak more than one language. I want her to truly value this. At the same time, we still love Brazil, which is where our parents still live.
