The three stars of 'UFC 183: Silva vs. Diaz' in Las Vegas

No one has finished Herman so quickly in MMA competition, but Brunson made it look easy. He seems to be gaining a knack for that style; the win was the second time in Brunson’s five-fight UFC career that he’s finished a bout in less than a minute. Only three other fighters in UFC history have done that.

Return of The Spider: Silva's Science Proves Too Much for Diaz's Grit | FIGHTLAND

We know how much effective cage cutting effects Anderson Silva, against Chris Weidman it completely killed The Spider's game, twice. But there was none of it here. Silva circled freely, never in danger. And when Diaz did get in close enough, the strength disparity really showed. Where Diaz could move in and lean on men like Paul Daley and Evangelista Santos, Silva could simply throw Diaz past him onto the cage, hit him, and then circle out again.

Matches to Make After UFC 183

Anderson Silva went two years, three months and 18 days between victories. Such a drought would have seemed impossible not so long ago. Silva returned from a career-threatening leg injury to defeat Nick Diaz by unanimous decision in the UFC 183 main event on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Scores were 49-46, 50-45 and 50-45 in favor of the former middleweight champion, who improved to 17-2 inside the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s famed Octagon. According to preliminary FightMetric data, Silva out-landed Diaz in all five rounds of a bout that took place entirely on the feet. Diaz resorted to taunting at various points in the match, but “The Spider” refused to play into his hands. Instead, he stayed disciplined, countered beautifully and exploited his advantages against the Cesar Gracie protégé. Speed, precision and variety were at the heart of his attack, as Silva zeroed in on the legs, body and head with kicks and punches. By the time it was over, Diaz was bloodied and frustrated, a loser for the third time in as many fights.

Gegard Mousasi: UFC asked me to fight Vitor Belfort but he turned it down

"I was planning on going on holiday, but the UFC called me and asked me 'would you like to fight Vitor Belfort?' and I said I had to talk to my coaches because I didn't want to have that burn out feeling again of fighting just because you have a fight.  I really wanted to take my rest, but after talking with my coaches and it was such a big opportunity and I was in the mood to fight," Mousasi said.

Thoughts & Shots: UFC 183

Anderson Silva’s future remains unclear. | Photo: Josh Hedges/UFC/Zuffa/Getty LAS VEGAS -- Anderson Silva ’s return to the Octagon at UFC 183 on Saturday was supposed to answer a slew of questions about one of the best fighters of all-time. However, his post-fight interview created a much more significant question: Is “The Spider” done? After a clear-cut decision win over blown-up welterweight Nick Diaz , Silva told longtime Ultimate Fighting Championship commentator Joe Rogan that his children want him to retire. He said he planned to go home and think about what he wants to do next. You could see the emotions flowing from Silva’s body as the decision was read in his favor. He fell back on the mat and sobbed, relief and satisfaction clearly visible. I’m no psychologist, but I’m not afraid to play one on the Internet. To me, Silva looked like a man who wanted to erase a painful memory hanging over his hall-of-fame career like a black cloud. As a proud champion, it would have been a tough leave the sport on a stretcher, his left leg snapped like a twig following his second loss to Chris Weidman at UFC 168.

UFC 183 By the Numbers

Anderson Silva went 25 minutes with Nick Diaz at UFC 183. | Photo: Josh Hedges/UFC/Zuffa/Getty More than a year after a gruesomely broken leg left his future in doubt, Anderson Silva made a triumphant return to the Octagon on Saturday night, capturing a unanimous decision triumph over Nick Diaz in the UFC 183 headliner at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Although he was unable to put his opponent away, Silva was clearly the superior fighter, outlanding Diaz with precision kicks and punches while largely ignoring the Stockton, Calif., native’s attempts to bait him into a brawl. With his work in the cage complete, Silva collapsed to the canvas in tears, the culmination of a comeback that began on an operating table in December 2013. While there is much about “The Spider’s” future that remains uncertain, he was finally able to put the memory of painful loss to Chris Weidman at UFC 168 in the past. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 183, with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com. HBO Sports: 'We stand ready to go' on Mayweather-Pacquiao

Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KO) is under contract to HBO Sports, while Mayweather (47-0, 26 KO) is under an exclusive deal with Showtime and CBS Sports, complicating any attempts to make the fight. But Showtime's Stephen Espinoza has said repeatedly that they are working on it, and this statement from HBO echoes that. The last time the two companies worked together was in 2002 for the Lennox Lewis vs Mike Tyson fight, when Lewis was with HBO and Tyson with Showtime. That fight broke records at the time on pay-per-view.

Gray Maynard-Alexander Yakovlev Lightweight Bout Set for UFC Fight Night in Virginia

Gray Maynard will attempt to rebound from three consecutive stoppage losses. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com Two fighters looking to halt losing skids will collide when Gray Maynard welcomes Alexander Yakovlev to the lightweight division at UFC Fight Night “Mendes vs. Lamas.” UFC officials Monday announced the matchup, which will take place April 4 at Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va. The Fox Sports 1-broadcast card will be headlined by a featherweight bout between former title challengers Chad Mendes and Ricardo Lamas . Maynard, 35, has lost three in a row and has suffered knockouts in four of his last five outings stretching back to 2011, a streak which drew some concern from UFC President Dana White last year. “The Bully” last entered the cage in August, when he was punched out in the second round by Ross Pearson . Yakovlev, 30, will make his 155-pound debut after competing for more than 10 years as a welterweight. The Russian import has faltered in his first two Octagon appearances, dropping unanimous decisions to Demian Maia and Nicholas Musoke in 2014.

Are we ready for an MMA world without Nick Diaz? Better yet, is he?

If we wanted to be jerks about it we could point out that Diaz has now lost three straight, which is an offense worthy of termination for most UFC fighters. If we wanted to be a little more charitable we’d follow that up by admitting that at least one of those losses was a questionable decision, and the other two came against all-time greats from two different divisions. If you have to drop three in a row, that’s not a bad way to do it.

Ed Soares: A superfight between GSP and Silva would be ‘bigger than UFC 100’

Even if Anderson Silva left things a little up in the air regarding his future after Saturday nights victory over Nick Diaz , his longtime friend and manager Ed Soares doesn’t think we’ve seen the last of the consensus greatest of all time. Soares appeared on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour , and said that not only does he believe the 39-year-old Silva will fight again, but that he’ll fight again at some point in 2015. "Yeah, I do," he told Ariel Helwani. "Right now they’re already starting to film [The Ultimate Fighter] Brazil [4], beginning [Monday], so he’s got a pretty tight schedule. He’ll probably be filming TUF until the first week of March, and then I think he’ll take some time off and sit there and see what’s next. But I could definitely see him fighting again in the second half of this year." After spending the last 13 months rehabilitating a broken leg and getting back into fight shape, Silva made a triumphant return to the Octagon at UFC 183 in Las Vegas, scoring a unanimous decision over Nick Diaz. Afterwards, an emotional Silva said that his family had pleaded with him to stop fighting, though he didn’t elaborate on whether or not this might be his swan song.

Floyd Mayweather Opens as Betting Favorite Against Manny Pacquiao

While an official announcement of their pairing has yet to be confirmed, online Sportbook Bovada.lv has pegged Floyd Mayweather as an (extremely) early betting favorite over Manny Pacquiao. Multiple reports have placed the long-awaited matchup on May 2 in Las Vegas, but a bout agreement has not been signed by both parties. The opening lines place Mayweather as a -300 favorite. This figure translates to having to bet $300 to win $100. Pacquiao sits at +230, which means a $100 wager would return $230 should he win. Bovada.lv also released lines for the following: Will the fight go the distance?
