Anderson Silva: 5 Defining Moments

From the second he set foot inside the Ultimate Fighting Championship , Anderson Silva was a game-changer; and those unfamiliar with his exploits soon became aware of them. Silva had already captured titles in Shooto and Cage Rage and beaten the likes of Roan Carneiro , Hayato Sakurai , Carlos Newton , Lee Murray and Jeremy Horn by the time he reached the Octagon at the age of 31 in June 2006. He was immediately hailed as a “different kind of striker” by UFC analyst Joe Rogan, and those words proved prophetic if not understated. Silva went on to capture the middleweight championship in his second UFC appearance and enjoyed a historic stay atop the 185-pound weight class. He has banked 13 post-fight performance bonuses and set countless records, including those for most consecutive victories (16), most title defenses (10), most knockdowns landed (18) and longest title reign (2,457 days). Silva remains active -- he will meet Derek Brunson in the UFC 208 co-main event on Feb. 11 -- as he approaches his 42nd birthday, even though Father Time has grown less and less kind to him.

Sherdog.com’s WMMA Pound-for-Pound Top 10

In less than 14 months, Valentina Shevchenko has put herself on the map among the pound-for-pound elite, and now she's headed for an Ultimate Fighting Championship title shot. Shevchenko pulled out a sweet second-round armbar to tap fellow pound-for-pound entrant Julianna Pena in the UFC on Fox 23 main event on Jan. 28 in Denver. “Bullet” is now 3-1 since entering the UFC in December 2015, with increasingly impressive wins over Sarah Kaufman , Holly Holm and now Pena. With her latest conquest, she rises to No. 4 in these rankings. More importantly, her win over Pena sets up a rematch with the only woman to beat her in the Octagon: UFC women's bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes, our No. 2-ranked pound-for-pound fighter. The Ronda Rousey era is over, and she's gone from this list; The Nunes-Shevchenko rivalry may be what takes the women's bantamweight division into its next great era. Another era could be over soon, too. Our third-ranked entrant, Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino, has been a staple of this list since its launch. However, in spite of her lofty status, she was flagged for a banned substance in an out-of-competition test by the U.

Stephen Thompson feels Tyron Woodley’s comments on race are ‘stupid’

“But when it comes to race, that’s stupid. I mean, that’s just stupid. One of the highest paid athletes in the UFC is Jon Jones, and pretty much whatever happened to him, he did to himself. And Anderson Silva on the other hand too. So I don’t get it. You know what, it kind of irritates me cause he’s focused on that when he should be focusing more on the fight at hand, because I don’t want to step out there March 4 th and face off against a distracted Tyron Woodley. I fight for the glory and I want to fight the best when I step out there March 4 th and I want him to be focused on it. So that’s my two cents on that, and I just think it’s ridiculous.”

Unbeaten UFC Heavyweight Justin Ledet Facing Possible Anti-Doping Violation

UFC heavyweight Justin Ledet has been notified of a potential anti-doping violation, according to a statement released by the promotion on Wednesday. The substance for which Ledet tested positive was not revealed, and USADA will handle results management and any possible sanctions going forward. Ledet is entitled to a full legal review process before any sanctions are imposed. Ledet, 28, is unbeaten in nine professional outings, with a no contest against Brice Ritani-Coe due to an inadvertent eye poke at Legacy FC 55 the only blemish on his record thus far. The Houston native debuted in the Octagon with a unanimous verdict over Chase Sherman at UFC Fight Night 92 before submitting Mark Godbeer in the first round at UFC Fight Night 99 on Nov. 19. Ledet was recently removed from Saturday's UFC Fight Night 104 card and currently does not have a fight booked with the Las Vegas-based organization.

Women's MMA Trailblazer Aisling Daly Announces Retirement After Brain Scan Abnormality

I will be officially retiring from the sport of MMA. This past year a routine brain scan showed up evidence of an abnormality, the remnant of a small haemorrhage that had taken place at some point in the months previous. It would be unlikely I would be medically cleared to compete again, even in the event I could find a doctor who would clear me it would be very unwise for me to continue to compete with the risks involved. My career has ended prematurely but I’m very grateful for my long list of achievements, I am and will always be ‘Ais the first’ for so many things, my legacy set in stone in the history of Irish mixed martial arts. I am the countries first ever world champion, the first and only female to ever do it. I have and always will give back to the sport which has given me so much. I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart the fans who have supported me tirelessly through various parts of the journey. Without this support there is no sport of MMA as we know it. I would like to thank my good friends and close team mates, there is no substitute for the genuine loyalty built between people over years of blood, sweat and tears.

RIPPED! Felice Herrig Continues to Shred, Posts New Mirror Selfie Two Day Out From Weigh-Ins

Starting to feel that " too skinny " feel but I still have lots of energy and feel strong. To most people who don't know the sport they would say things like " ewww too skinny. Eat something " but that's the thing about this sport. You do what you have to do to make weight. And I try and do it in the most healthy way I possibly can. I train hard and eat right without starving myself. But, yes the scale does have to say 116 when I step on it. So the last few days I do have to eat very little and cut water. It is one of the hardest parts of this sport. It is not something myself or any other fighter does by choice or for aesthetic purposes. To me there are 2 fights before the actual fight 1- the grueling training camp 2- the weight cut and then there is the fight itself. I hope people stop to educate themselves on the sport of mma before making comments like " ewww too skinny " Call it what it really is- hard work, discipline and dedication

The Bottom Line: McGregor-Mayweather a Bad Idea for Everyone in MMA, Save One

With his press conference on Saturday in Manchester, England, Conor McGregor made it clear he’s committed to aggressively pursuing a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mayweather himself has been outwardly receptive to the possibility, as well, and it’s no mystery why given the risk/reward ratio for the boxing legend. A McGregor-Mayweather fight would be a box office bonanza; and with the amount of money involved, it’s easy to understand why McGregor himself would be interested. The likely problems with the fight would apply to pretty much everyone else around him, from his sport to his company to his fans. Ardent combat sports fans are savvy enough to recognize the importance of the rules to any fight. A boxer isn’t going to tend to do well under MMA rules, and an MMA fighter isn’t going to tend to thrive under boxing rules. There will of course be the occasional upset, but on balance, it’s a bad bet to compete against someone who has been training for years and years under his or her particular rule set. Combat sports organizations know this, and for years, the ones with the power have protected their athletes against the athletes from other sports.

UFC President Dana White Doesn’t Expect Ronda Rousey to Fight Again

Dana White is among the many who believes that Ronda Rousey may be done with fighting. The UFC president recently spoke with the ex-bantamweight queen, and while he said that her “spirits are good” and she’s in a “real good place,” he expects that Rousey will move on to the next phase of her life. “In the conversation I had with her, if I had to say right here right now — and again, I don’t like saying right here right now because it’s up to her — but I wouldn’t say she fights again,” White said on the UFC “Unfiltered” podcast. “I think she’s probably done. She’s going to ride off into the sunset and start living life outside of fighting.” After taking more than a year-long hiatus following the first loss of her professional career, Rousey returned to the Octagon at UFC 207 on Dec. 31. The results weren’t pretty, as the Olympic judoka suffered a 48-second technical knockout loss to reigning 135-pound champion Amanda Nunes in the evening’s main event. White said that Rousey made enough money her rise to prominence in the UFC, when she became perhaps the biggest crossover star the sport had ever seen.

No Apologies — Fabricio Werdum Justifies Use Of Gay Jokes

“I gave the (interim title) idea because ‘Cigano’ was saying a lot, and I couldn’t understand why he targeted me,’ Werdum explained to MMA Junkie . “Usually the target is the champion. That’s always the goal. So I didn’t understand why he was talking about me before the fight even happened. That’s why I joked – everyone knows that ‘Cigano’ is not gay, obviously, and I don’t have anything against gay people. But I joked that he needed to come out of the closet because he didn’t stop talking about me. If I were the champ, I’d understand it, but since I wasn’t, I couldn’t. So I challenged him. I told him that if Miocic didn’t fight because of his contract issues, I suggested an interim title fight with ‘Cigano.’”
