UFC Fight Night 126 Post-Mortem: Blazing Saddle

Donald Cerrone was in uncharted territory entering his UFC Fight Night 126 main event against Yancy Medeiros on Sunday in Austin, Texas. On a three-fight losing streak for the first time in his career, he had arrived at a potential crossroads. Medeiros turned out to be the perfect opponent for Cerrone, as he showed off the skills that have made him a fan favorite for years. Cerrone’s game plan was evident from the start, as he appeared content to sit on the outside and allow Medeiros to dictate the pace with his aggressive standup. Meanwhile, “Cowboy” played to his back foot and looked to capitalize with a counter shot during one of the many wild exchanges that took place. Cerrone’s opportunity came at the 10-second warning, when he connected with a stiff right hook to the Hawaiian’s jaw. The impact put Medeiros on skates before he tumbled to the canvas and was met with fight-ending shots from Cerrone. Afterward, relief emanated from the Cerrone corner. He not only broke out of a three-fight skid but tied Georges St. Pierre and Michael Bisping for first on the UFC’s all-time wins list with 20.

‘Cowboy’ Admits Nerves Were a Factor vs. Medeiros After ‘Pretty Sucky’ Losing Streak

Donald Cerrone did his best to avoid thinking about the three-fight losing streak that followed him into his UFC Fight Night 126 showdown with Yancy Medeiros . However, as one of the UFC’s biggest stars, it was hard for “Cowboy” to go anywhere without being reminded of the recent struggles that saw him drop successive bouts to Jorge Masvidal , Robbie Lawler and Darren Till at 170 pounds. “It was just funny. Everyone kept asking me, ‘How do you feel?’ I don’t even think about it until you guys tell me what a loser I am,” Cerrone said on Fox Sports 1. “We didn’t change anything. We just keep training. The sport’s ups and downs are so crazy. I just felt really good coming in.” That good feeling wasn’t unfounded, as Cerrone sent Medeiros tumbling to the canvas with a right hand to the jaw in the waning moments of round one. Follow-up punches on the ground ended the Jackson-Wink MMA product’s slump at the 4:58 mark. “This was a big nervy one. Losing three in a row, that’s pretty sucky,” Cerrone admitted. “Losing four, do I keep my job? So it’s like, ‘Damn.

Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Cerrone vs. Medeiros’

The Ultimate Fighting Championship never shies away from handing Donald Cerrone the keys to the car, and more often than not, that faith has been rewarded. Cerrone turned the page on a career-worst three-fight losing streak, as he struck down Yancy Medeiros with punches in the first round of their UFC Fight Night 126 main event on Sunday at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas. Referee Herb Dean rescued Medeiros 4:58 into Round 1, saddling the Hawaiian with his first defeat in nearly two years. After an embrace of mutual admiration during pre-fight instructions, the welterweights drew their guns and unloaded on one another. Preliminary FightMetric data showed they combined to throw 137 total strikes, all but one of which was deemed significant. Late in the first round, Cerrone short-circuited Medeiros with a right hook, chased him to the canvas and dropped punches with both hands until it was over. Dean gave Medeiros the opportunity to recover, but it became clear to the veteran official that two seconds of additional punishment might have been two seconds too many.

James Vick: No One in UFC Lightweight Division Wants to Fight Me

It’s getting more and more difficult to ignore the accomplishments of James Vick . “The Texecutioner” improved to 9-1 at lightweight with a unanimous decision victory over Francisco Trinaldo at UFC Fight Night 126 in Austin, Texas, on Sunday night. Now, Vick wants the recognition he feels he deserves. “I’m 6-foot-3 and I’m a finisher, so no one wants to fight me,” Vick said. “I’m better than anyone in every position whether its grappling or striking. My record is undeniable. You probably can’t name many more people in the UFC that have a better record than I have.” In addition to his victory over Trinaldo, Vick also owns wins over the likes of Joseph Duffy , Abel Trujillo and Jake Matthews in UFC competition. There is still room for improvement for Vick, however. He was unable to deliver the finish he desired against Trinaldo and instead appeared content to cruise to victory down the stretch. Some of that can be attributed to an injury suffered during the fight that may have limited the Texan’s ability to throw punches.

Conor McGregor on Potential Nate Diaz Rubber Match: ‘Trilogy will be Special’

Controlling the human head. A post shared by Conor McGregor Official (@thenotoriousmma) on Feb 16, 2018 at 9:36am PST If you ask fight fans what words come to mind when describing Conor McGregor , few would argue that trash talking is near the top of the list. McGregor’s ability to get inside his opponent’s head is a huge weapon for the Irishman. Over the weekend, McGregor posted a photo on Instagram with the caption “controlling the human head.” McGregor received some unsavoury comments about his grappling skills on the post, particularly as this was what Nate Diaz did so well to set up the rear-naked choke finish in their first fight. It was refreshing to see him respond positively to fan comments on his grappling skills and acknowledging Diaz and his ability: “A truly beautiful position. The most intense position to be in under the lights of the entire world. Try and imagine what it would feel like. Amazing. Respect to Nate always and our trilogy will be special when we do it 100 percent,” McGregor wrote. “There is no rush Nate Diaz, our trilogy will show true to us for what we are.

Could Demetrius Johnson vs. Henry Cejudo 2 Be Set for Summer?

Demetrius johnson vs @HenryCejudo coming to you in the summer. Who's excited? — Ali Abdelaziz (@AliAbdelaziz00) February 21, 2018 It’s possible the superfight between flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson and bantamweight king T.J. Dillashaw may have to wait after Henry Cejudo ’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, posted to Twitter. The tweet says “Demetrius johnson vs @HenryCejudo coming to you in the summer. Who's excited?” The two previously met in April 2016 at UFC 197. Johnson completely outclassed the former Olympic gold medallist that night, earning a TKO victory. Since then, Cejudo has gone 2-1, but has looked to be a much improved fighter with notable improvements to his stand-up game. After “Mighty Mouse” set the record in his last fight against Ray Borg for most title defenses with 11, many believed the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world would pursue other challenges in the form of a super fight with Dillashaw. Johnson is currently recovering from shoulder surgery and has been spending his time away from fighting while doing some promotional work alongside WWE star Xavier Woods for the new Dragon Ball FighterZ video game.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Him

Big men often wield big power, and none wield more than Derrick Lewis . “The Black Beast” won for the seventh time in eight appearances, as he put away former M-1 Global champion Marcin Tybura with punches in the first round of their UFC Fight Night 126 co-main event on Feb. 18 in Austin, Texas. Lewis now owns a 10-3 mark under the Ultimate Fighting Championship banner, though his latest victory came with considerable difficulty attached. After experiencing the Texan’s brutal punching power firsthand, Tybura switched gears and soundly outgrappled him, executing takedowns and guard passes while moving to full mount on multiple occasions. Lewis appeared to be headed for a decision loss until late in the third round, where he bucked fatigue, circled away from a takedown and unleashed his fists. A crushing right hook floored Tybura, who could only cling to a hapless single-leg. Lewis then delivered further punishment to the grounded Pole’s exposed head, prompting the stoppage. The effort moves Lewis to No. 10 in our latest heavyweight rankings and bumps Ben Rothwell to our bubble list as he awaits word of his fate from the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

UFC Austin: By the Numbers

If there was any doubt beforehand, there isn’t now: Donald Cerrone still has plenty left in the tank. “Cowboy” got a much-needed victory in the UFC Fight Night 126 headliner in Austin, Texas, on Sunday night, as he scored a knockout of Yancy Medeiros in the waning seconds of the opening round. A right hand to the jaw sent Medeiros tumbling to the ground, and Cerrone sealed the win with follow-up punches on the mat at the 4:58 mark of the period. UFC Fight Night 126 reactions: Winning and losing fighters on social media

Thank you all for the overwhelming amount of support last night! I didn't get the decision but I felt like it was a much closer fight than the score cards reflected. In fact I felt like I won rounds 1 and 2, but that's not my job to decide… My job is to go out there and FIGHT, to entertain, and to try to finish the fight. Thats exactly what I did and what I will do every single time you see me in the Octagon!! Thank you UFC for taking such great care of me, and I appreciate that Fight Of The Night Bonus!! I needed that more than you know, and plan to get many more in the future. Thanks to my Coach @sayifsaud for going above and beyond for me! Thanks Coach @tmackelitetraining for all your help, and thanks to all my other coaches past and present for helping me get to this level! Thanks to all my teammates at @fortis_mma for grinding day in day out to become such a den of champions! This is just the beginning! I'll be back soon! Better than ever! Anderson Silva Won’t Retire Even With 4-Year USADA Ban, Still Hoping for Roy Jones Jr. Bout

Facing a four-year USADA suspension as a second-time anti-doping offender, Anderson Silva is still denying taking any performance enhancing drugs. “The Spider” was removed from UFC Fight Night 122 in November after reportedly being flagged for methyltestosterone — a synthetic anabolic steroid — and an unnamed diuretic. The former middleweight champion is blaming the positive test on a tainted supplement. “Maybe the supplements I used are contaminated, I don’t know,” Silva told TMZ Sports. “I’m just waiting. Obviously, if I take these steroids I’m stupid because I’m too old. I’m not starting my career, I’m finishing.” Silva previously failed a drug test at UFC 183 in 2015, testing positive for the steroids drostanolone and androsterone. The Brazilian blamed the failed test on a sexual enhancement pill but was suspended one year by the Nevada Athletic Commission. Clearly, Silva is hoping that he won’t face the maximum penalty this time around because he has designs on facing retired boxing star Roy Jones Jr. Jones recently had his farewell bout on UFC Fight Pass but said he would consider a return for a chance to fight Silva.

Anderson Silva on failed USADA test: 'I'm stupid' if I took steroids

“I believe and trust his word,” Camoes said. “Anderson is a very mature guy, very experienced. And he’s aware that – he wouldn’t use something and risk getting suspended and getting his image tarnished. So we believe in contamination of some product or supplement. All the products that he used will be analyzed, so we can possibly prove there was contamination.”
