Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Him

Big men often wield big power, and none wield more than Derrick Lewis . “The Black Beast” won for the seventh time in eight appearances, as he put away former M-1 Global champion Marcin Tybura with punches in the first round of their UFC Fight Night 126 co-main event on Feb. 18 in Austin, Texas. Lewis now owns a 10-3 mark under the Ultimate Fighting Championship banner, though his latest victory came with considerable difficulty attached. After experiencing the Texan’s brutal punching power firsthand, Tybura switched gears and soundly outgrappled him, executing takedowns and guard passes while moving to full mount on multiple occasions. Lewis appeared to be headed for a decision loss until late in the third round, where he bucked fatigue, circled away from a takedown and unleashed his fists. A crushing right hook floored Tybura, who could only cling to a hapless single-leg. Lewis then delivered further punishment to the grounded Pole’s exposed head, prompting the stoppage. The effort moves Lewis to No. 10 in our latest heavyweight rankings and bumps Ben Rothwell to our bubble list as he awaits word of his fate from the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

5 Things You Might Not Know About Mike Perry

A rising star due to his highlight-reel striking, Mike Perry is a fighter to watch whenever he steps into the Octagon. His fight on the UFC on Fox 28 card is no exception, as Perry is matched up against a fellow striking specialist in Max Griffin to open the bill’s main card. While Perry is known for his striking and exciting finishes that have earned him multiple performance bonuses, here are five things you might not know about “Platinum.” 1. 0-1 professional boxing record Before committing to a mixed martial arts career, Perry tried his hand at an extremely brief professional boxing career. Perry made just one appearance in 2015, losing to Kenneth McNeil via a fourth-round TKO in a fight held in Pensacola, Florida. 2. Made his UFC debut on pay-per-view at UFC 202 Perry was given an opportunity to showcase his skills on the big stage in his Octagon debut. Instead of the typical prelim or Fight Night debut, Perry was thrust onto the UFC 202 main card for his first match in the major leagues. Perry delivered on the opportunity with a first round TKO of Hyun Gyu Lim to arrive on the UFC scene in style.

Dana White Affirms Ferguson-Nurmagomedov for 155 Title; Won't Say If McGregor Will Be Stripped

Daily Debate: Is Nate Diaz good for MMA and the UFC?

Diaz (19-11 MMA, 14-9 UFC) has been out of the cage since a two-fight non-title welterweight series with lightweight champion Conor McGregor in 2016. However, despite bringing some energy to fight-week activities, Diaz is also can’t-miss TV once in the cage. After all, he’s racked up “Fight of the Night” bonuses in his three most recent fights, and overall, he’s tied for first with 15 fight-night bonuses.

Khabib Nurmagomedov's manager: Why UFC 223's confusing title stakes actually make sense

“But if Tony Ferguson was the champ, Khabib would have to fight a regular fight. I’m not giving myself credit here as a smart guy, but any manager in my position, he should have thought of that – ‘Let’s make Tony Ferguson champ and Khabib fight him’ But hold on, what happens if Tony got hurt? Khabib is going to be 30-0, with no belt? This is why, regardless, if Tony got hurt or Khabib got hurt, it’s a belt on the line. It doesn’t matter.”

5 Reasons to Watch the UFC Fight Night 126 Prelims

Donald Cerrone will headline UFC Fight Night 126 on Sunday in Austin, Texas, as he attempts to end a three-fight losing streak at the expense of a red-hot Yancy Medeiros . However, the undercard offers a number of enticing storylines that are worth your attention, including two involving graduates of Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series and another concerning the late addition of Joshua Burkman to the UFC Fight Pass prelims. Here are five reasons to tune into the UFC Fight Night 126 prelims: 1. Sanchez’s Return After a 1-2 start to his Ultimate Fighting Championship career, flyweight prospect Joby Sanchez was released and sent back to the regional scene in early 2016. Sanchez to his credit took the news in stride, used it as motivation to hone his craft and improved upon his already strong skills. Since his loss to Geane Herrera at “The Ultimate Fighter 22” Finale, he has posted a perfect 4-0 record, with two of those wins coming on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series. Sanchez makes his return to the Octagon against former Legacy Fighting Alliance champion Roberto Sanchez , who suffered his first pro defeat to Joseph Morales in his UFC debut.

Surging Welterweight Santiago Ponzinibbio Calls Out Donald Cerrone for Showdown in Chile

In May, the Ultimate Fighting Championship is set to hold their first ever event in Chile and many South American fighters are putting their hands up to feature in this historic event, including surging welterweight contender Santiago Ponzinibbio . The Argentine is on a six-fight winning streak with notable victories over top competition, including Mike Perry and Gunnar Nelson . Ponzinibbio spoke with about the event in Chile and who he’d like to fight: “The best options are Thompson and Cerrone because of their fighting styles. It would be a great show against either one of them, but Thompson is saying that he’s injured. After such a beautiful performance last night, Cerrone would be a great option.” “I was watching Cerrone’s fight last night and he was really impressive. It was a good knockout. He has a lot of knockouts, and I think it would be a fun fight for the fans. Cerrone and I could do a fight that will go down in history, in an event that will already make history in Chile.” While Ponzinibbio may want to fight Cerrone in Chile, the Argentine competes in the welterweight division and may not be aware that “Cowboy” spoke after his win against Yancy Medeiros about his desire to move back down to lightweight .

Could Demetrius Johnson vs. Henry Cejudo 2 Be Set for Summer?

Demetrius johnson vs @HenryCejudo coming to you in the summer. Who's excited? — Ali Abdelaziz (@AliAbdelaziz00) February 21, 2018 It’s possible the superfight between flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson and bantamweight king T.J. Dillashaw may have to wait after Henry Cejudo ’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, posted to Twitter. The tweet says “Demetrius johnson vs @HenryCejudo coming to you in the summer. Who's excited?” The two previously met in April 2016 at UFC 197. Johnson completely outclassed the former Olympic gold medallist that night, earning a TKO victory. Since then, Cejudo has gone 2-1, but has looked to be a much improved fighter with notable improvements to his stand-up game. After “Mighty Mouse” set the record in his last fight against Ray Borg for most title defenses with 11, many believed the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world would pursue other challenges in the form of a super fight with Dillashaw. Johnson is currently recovering from shoulder surgery and has been spending his time away from fighting while doing some promotional work alongside WWE star Xavier Woods for the new Dragon Ball FighterZ video game.

Anderson Silva Won’t Retire Even With 4-Year USADA Ban, Still Hoping for Roy Jones Jr. Bout

Facing a four-year USADA suspension as a second-time anti-doping offender, Anderson Silva is still denying taking any performance enhancing drugs. “The Spider” was removed from UFC Fight Night 122 in November after reportedly being flagged for methyltestosterone — a synthetic anabolic steroid — and an unnamed diuretic. The former middleweight champion is blaming the positive test on a tainted supplement. “Maybe the supplements I used are contaminated, I don’t know,” Silva told TMZ Sports. “I’m just waiting. Obviously, if I take these steroids I’m stupid because I’m too old. I’m not starting my career, I’m finishing.” Silva previously failed a drug test at UFC 183 in 2015, testing positive for the steroids drostanolone and androsterone. The Brazilian blamed the failed test on a sexual enhancement pill but was suspended one year by the Nevada Athletic Commission. Clearly, Silva is hoping that he won’t face the maximum penalty this time around because he has designs on facing retired boxing star Roy Jones Jr. Jones recently had his farewell bout on UFC Fight Pass but said he would consider a return for a chance to fight Silva.

Bellator Clears Roster of 13 Fighters, Including Karakhanyan, Gonzalez, Carmont

Bellator MMA has done some serious housecleaning in recent weeks, clearing its roster of several recognizable names. All told, the California-based promotion has parted ways with 13 fighters: L.C. Davis , Steve Garcia , Steve Kozola , Kendall Grove , Georgi Karakhanyan , Fernando Gonzalez , Kevin Casey , Francisco France , Mike Rhodes , Francis Carmont , Philipe Lins, Ben Reiter and Alexis Dufresne . In many cases, the aforementioned fighters weren’t necessarily released but are simply no longer under contract with Bellator. confirmed the news with a promotion official on Tuesday following an initial report from Jason Floyd via Twitter . Among the notables on the list is Georgi Karakhanyan , the former World Series of Fighting champion who faced the likes of Daniel Weichel , Pat Curran , Bubba Jenkins and Emmanuel Sanchez during his second Bellator tenure. Most recently, “Insane” suffered a decision loss to Henry Corrales at Bellator 192. Gonzalez, meanwhile, went on an unlikely 7-2 run in the organization, posting notable victories over the likes of Karo Parisyan , Curtis Millender , Karl Amoussou , Brennan Ward , Gilbert Smith and Brandon Girtz , to name a few.

Majority Decision Sends Matt Mitrione Past Roy Nelson, Into Bellator Heavyweight GP Semis

Fortunately for Matt Mitrione , he banked two rounds. The former Purdue University defensive tackle picked apart Roy Nelson for the better part of 10 minutes, withstood a furious third-round rally from “Big Country” and walked away with a majority decision in the Bellator 194 headliner on Friday at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Scores were 29-28, 29-28 and 28-28, as Mitrione advanced to the semifinals of the 2018 Bellator MMA heavyweight grand prix. Nelson (23-15, 1-1 Bellator) spent the first two rounds taking on water. Mitrione (13-5, 4-0 Bellator) cut loose with stinging straight lefts, thudding uppercuts with both hands, occasional jabs and heavy inside leg kicks, all while avoiding his counterpart’s one-hitter-quitter right hand. Behind on the scorecards, Nelson fought with a sense of urgency in the third round. There, he executed a takedown, advanced to the mounted crucifix position and pummeled Mitrione with short punches, elbows and forearm strikes. However, Nelson could not sustain the kind of offense necessary to force the stoppage.

Matches to Make After Bellator 194

The most prolific fighter in Bellator MMA history may have nailed down another shot at the undisputed lightweight championship. Patricky Freire chewed up and spit out Derek Campos in the Bellator 194 co-headliner, as he discarded the well-regarded Mohler MMA representative with first-round punches on Friday at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Campos succumbed to blows 2:23 into Round 1, his four-fight winning streak having run its course. “Pitbull” fought at a measured and purposeful pace, probed for weaknesses and unleased his hands. Freire floored his counterpart with a clean left hook, followed with an uppercut and then cut loose. Campos retreated but could find no refuge inside the cage, inevitability slowly closing in around him. Freire fired away with uppercuts and hooks, drove the Texan to all fours and drew the curtain without throwing another punch. Upon seeing Campos’ turtled condition, referee Kevin MacDonald called for the stoppage to prevent unnecessary damage. Freire now holds a 2-0 edge in the head-to-head series between the two lightweights.
