Bellator 173 highlights: Watch Liam McGeary leave Brett McDermott's face a bloody mess

And that business had a lot to do with smashing up McDermott’s face, leaving him a bloody mess in the Bellator 173 light heavyweight main event on Friday in front of a friendly crowd in Northern Ireland. McGeary (12-1 MMA, 9-1 BMMA) survived a quick knockdown by McDermott (7-5 MMA, 0-1 BMMA), then got a TKO when the doctor stopped the fight 66 seconds into the second round.

Adam Townsend Pounds Out Marcus Edwards in Legacy Fighting Alliance 5 Headliner

Once he got rolling, Adam Townsend wasn’t going to be denied. Townsend survived a rough start to dominate Marcus Edwards down the stretch en route to a third-round stoppage victory in the Legacy Fighting Alliance 5 headliner at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colo., on Friday night. The end came 4:53 into round three as Townsend pummeled his foe with ground-and-pound from back mount. For a moment, it appeared that Townsend’s night would end in early disappointment. Edwards dazed his foe with a head kick early in round one and swarmed for a finish against the fence with punches and knees. Townsend regained his bearings enough to land a takedown and escaped a guillotine attempt from the Colorado native on the canvas. Townsend would take Edwards (12-5) down again later in the frame and eventually moved into mount. That would be a recurring theme for the rest of the fight, as Townsend (17-4) landed early takedowns in both rounds two and three. As Townsend bullied his opponent on the mat, Edwards’ resolve gradually began to fade. Edwards posed virtually no threat in the last stanza, and Townsend mounted him repeatedly en route to the finish just before the final horn.

Opinion: A Retroactive Look at Recent Retroactive TUE Drama

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Last Friday, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency cleared featherweight queen Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino in her case stemming from a positive test for spironolactone this past December, granting her a retroactive therapeutic use exemption for the banned diuretic and imposing no punishment. Two days later during the Ultimate Fighting Championship 's Fight Night card in Halifax, cursed UFC flyweight Ian McCall joined Joe Rogan and Eddie Bravo for their “Fight Companion” podcast. In their multi-hour chat session, “Uncle Creepy” revealed that ahead of his ill-fated, canceled bout with Jarred Brooks at UFC 208, he was given intravenous rehydration by UFC officials, despite being banned by USADA rules. Since the UFC beefed up its drug testing policy and USADA officially began testing its athletes on July 1, 2015, the relationship between the two entities has undeniably, provocatively changed the landscape of this sport's biggest promotion and this sport on the whole.

Gian Villante Granted Retroactive TUE by USADA, Cleared to Fight ‘Shogun’ in March

UFC light heavyweight Gian Villante has been cleared of a potential anti-doping violation by USADA. The organization announced that Villante has been granted a retroactive therapeutic use exemption after disclosing the use of an inhaler during an out-of-competition drug test conducted on Jan. 18. The inhaler contained the substance vilanterol, which is listed as a Beta-2 Agonist (drugs that cause smooth muscle relaxation) and banned under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code. “Following his disclosure, USADA advised Villante that absent a valid TUE, the use of the inhaler was prohibited under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy. Thereafter, Villante submitted a TUE application documenting that his physician prescribed a 14-day course of the inhaler to treat conditions associated with airflow restriction and asthma,” the USADA statement read. “Upon a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Villante’s use of vilanterol, which included the retroactive TUE application process, USADA determined that the athlete had an unequivocally diagnosed acute medical condition for which the use of vilanterol is consistent with the standard of care.

UFC Fight Night 105 Medicals: Browne, Hendricks Among Those Facing 6-Month Suspensions

Travis Browne and Johny Hendricks are two of the 10 fighters facing 180-day suspensions following UFC Fight Night 105 . The Nova Scotia Boxing Authority recently released a list of medical suspensions from the event, which took place at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, this past Sunday. In the evening’s main event, Derrick Lewis knocked out Browne 3:12 into the second round of their heavyweight encounter. Browne has been suspended six months unless he is cleared by a negative CT scan. At a minimum, he faces a 60-day layoff. Lewis, who earlier this week said he broke his foot , was suspended 30 days with no contact in training for 21 days due to a “hard bout.” The foot injury was not mentioned, however. Meanwhile, Hendricks made a successful middleweight debut, as he outpointed Hector Lombard in the evening’s co-headliner. “Bigg Rigg” injured his left hand in the bout and is suspended 180 days unless he is cleared by an x-ray. Otherwise, he is only facing a minimum seven-day suspension. Eight other fighters from UFC Fight Night 105 are potentially facing six months on the sideline: Cezar Ferreira , Sara McMann , Gina Mazany , Alessandro Ricci , Nordine Taleb , Aiemann Zahabi , Reginaldo Vieira , and Ryan Janes .

Tyron Woodley Focused on Thompson Rematch, Not Future Bout vs. Georges St. Pierre

Not long after Tyron Woodley knocked out Robbie Lawler to claim the welterweight crown at UFC 201, he set his sights on a pair of high-profile opponents. One of those was Nick Diaz , whose suspension for a positive marijuana test at UFC 183 ended last summer. While Diaz is cleared to compete, there are currently no fights on the horizon for the Stockton, Calif., native. The other option that interested Woodley was ex-champ Georges St. Pierre , who in June had expressed a desire to end a hiatus from the sport that began in late 2013. Now, St. Pierre is officially back in the UFC fold after recently signing a new contract with the Las Vegas-based promotion. However, Woodley is more focused on his rematch with Stephen Thompson , the man he initially dismissed after vanquishing Lawler, than any “money fights” the future might hold. “I’m not worried about GSP right now. I don’t have time to go back-and-forth on that roller coaster ride,” Woodley said during a teleconference on Thursday. “‘Wonderboy’" is getting a second opportunity; he’s in a win-win situation.

Bellator Files Lawsuit Against UFC to Prevent Release of Confidential Information

Bellator MMA has filed a lawsuit against the UFC attempting to block two subpoenas from the Las Vegas-based promotion that would allow the release of “confidential” fighter contract and negotiation documents. Bellator filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The Sporting News first reported the lawsuit. An anti-trust lawsuit was filed against the UFC by Jon Fitch , Nate Quarry , Cung Le and others in 2015 accusing the company of “maintaining an illegal monopoly….by systematically eliminating competition from rival promoters, artificially suppressing fighters’ earnings from bouts and merchandising and marketing activities through restrictive contracting and other exclusionary practices.” In order to help defend itself against the anti-trust suit, the UFC filed subpoenas that would allow its lawyers to have access to copies of Bellator’s contracts and detailed financial records. According to the lawsuit, Bellator claims that "the subpoenas improperly seek trade secret and other sensitive information protected from disclosure; they are overbroad and unduly burdensome; and this information cannot be adequately protected by the litigants’ stipulated protective order.

Featherweights Gabriel Benitez, Enrique Barzola to Clash at UFC 211

A featherweight duel pitting Gabriel Benitez against Enrique Barzola has been added to the UFC 211 lineup. The promotion recently announced the matchup. UFC 211 takes place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas on May 13 and is headlined by a heavyweight title tilt between Stipe Miocic and Junior dos Santos . In the co-main event, Joanna Jedrzejczyk will defend her strawweight championship against Jessica Andrade . Benitez, 28, has been victorious in three of his four UFC appearances. Most recently, “Moggly” submitted Sam Sicilia in the second round at UFC Fight Night 94 on Sept. 17. The Tijuana, Mexico, native is 19-5 as a professional, with 16 triumphs coming inside the distance. Barzola, meanwhile, is 2-1 during his brief Octagon tenure. In his last outing, the Lima, Peru, native outpointed Chris Avila at UFC Fight Night 98 on Nov. 5. “El Fuerte” owns a 12-3-1 career mark, including eight victories via knockout, technical knockout or submission.

Justin DeLoach Starches Chris Pearson in Two in ShoBox Main Event

Super welterweight contender Justin DeLoach was sensational Friday night in the main event of the latest edition of ShoBox: The New Generation. The longtime Showtime boxing series has produced countless eventual world champions and by the looks of DeLoach, he could be added to that list. DeLoach (17-1, 9 KOs) bludgeoned Chris Pearson badly and knocked him out in the second round. DeLoach was in control of the action from the start and turned up the heat quickly. “The Chosen One” dropped Pearson (14-2, 10 KOs) twice in what was the final frame, with the second felling being for good. The official time of the knockout came at the 2:30 mark of the stanza, igniting the raucous crowd inside Pechanga Casino and Resort in Temecula, Calif. Saul Rodriguez improved to 21-0-1 (15) by edging fellow lightweight Oscar Bravo via split decision over 10 hard-fought rounds. Bravo seemed to be in control of the action for much of the fight and even knocked Rodriguez off his feet in the fifth, but it was Rodriguez’ higher punch output and constant pressure that swayed the judges in his favor. Two of the judges favored Rodriguez with scores of 95-94 and 97-92, while the third official had it 95-94 for Bravo, who fell to 22-7 with 10 KOs.

UFC 209 Lineup Finalized with Addition of Two New Bouts

Two bouts were announced for UFC 209 on Thursday, giving the March 4 pay-per-view card a total of 12 fights. Amanda Bobby Cooper will lock horns with Cynthia Calvillo at strawweight, while Albert Morales square off against Andre Soukhamthath at bantamweight. Both contests will take place on the UFC Fight Pass-streamed prelims. UFC 209 takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and is headlined by a welterweight title rematch between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thomson. In the co-main event, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson will square off for the interim lightweight championship. A finalist on Season 23 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Cooper earned her first Octagon triumph with a three-round verdict over Anna Elmose at UFC Fight Night 99 on Nov. 19. Calvillo enters her promotional debut with a 3-0 mark that includes a third-round TKO win over Montana Stewart at Legacy Fighting Alliance 1. Morales is still looking for his UFC victory after battling Alejandro Perez to a majority draw in his debut and falling to Thomas Almeida via second-round TKO.

Chael Sonnen reveals Tito Ortiz tapped at Bellator 170 |

“The score is one-one between Tito and I and you always go into a rubber match. Everyone knows that. The only reason I kept my mouth shut at the Tito fight – look, Tito tapped in that fight. I knew Tito tapped when he tapped. I heard Tito verbally tap and I’ve never said a word about it, privately to Tito at the press conference or to you guys. I never said anything and the reason is, first off, when you lose, you just take your loss. It’s not a tap if the referee doesn’t call it a tap so therefore, Tito didn’t tap. I thought he tapped, and I let a move go. He verbally tapped, and I never said anything about it and the reason was, he quit the sport five seconds later. He quit the sport five seconds after I tapped and he quit the sport a minute and five seconds after he tapped. There was no rematch. There was nothing to build and no reason to tell the real story. “He then make-believes that he’s gonna come back for Fedor. Now, Tito was nowhere near the Fedor fight. He didn’t offer his services, he had nothing to do with it, but the bottom line was, he then took himself out of retirement by pretending that he offered to fight Fedor, which he did not do.

PBC on Fox Weigh-in Results: Champ Wilder, Washington Given Green Light

Premier Boxing Champions returns to primetime Saturday night with a heavyweight world championship. Reigning WBC titlist Deontay Wilder will put his belt on the line against relatively late replacement Gerald Washington and while neither man needed to hit a certain weight limit, Friday’s weigh-ins went off without a hitch. Washington (18-0-1, 12 KOs), who replaced Andrezej Wawrzyk last month, was the first of the featured fighters to step to the scale. The former USC football player came in officially at 239 pounds and looked as ready as ever for the biggest fight of his career. “I've had an incredible run to get me hear,” Washington earlier in the week at the final pre-fight press conference. “I'm thankful to Deontay for picking me for this fight. He could have chosen a lot of opponents, but he picked me and I'm grateful for that. This is a dream come true. I started boxing as a kid but I didn't know what I wanted to do. I've had a long road, but now I'm here fighting for the heavyweight championship of the world. This just means so much to me.” Wilder (37-0, 36 KOs) looked as cool as ever on the scale.

LFA 5 results: Adam Townsend escapes early trouble, beats Marcus Edwards by TKO

Except Townsend, with a gash under his left eye, wasn’t just running away. He was regrouping and immediately turned the round with a takedown. That led to an abundance of scrambling as neither man could hold position the rest of the round. At one point, it appeared Edwards could finish with a guillotine, though Townsend slid out of the choke that wasn’t quite tight enough.

LFA Bantamweight Champ Leandro Higo Signs Multi-Fight Deal with Bellator MMA

Brazilian bantamweight prospect Leandro Higo has signed an exclusive, multi-fight contract with Bellator MMA. Higo confirmed the deal via Instagram on Thursday following an initial report from . A date and opponent for Higo’s promotional debut are currently unknown. “I’m very happy to say I’m a Bellator fighter,” Higo wrote. “I was very impressed with the organization [when he cornered Patricky Freire against Saad Awad at Bellator 141], and I couldn’t be happier with the plans they have for the future. I’m looking for another belt now.” Higo will enter his Bellator MMA debut on an eight-fight winning streak. In his last outing, the former Resurrection Fighting Alliance champion outpointed ex-Legacy Fighting Championship titlist Stephen Peterson at Legacy Fighting Alliance’s inaugural event to claim the organization’s vacant 135-pound crown. Higo also competed on Season 4 of “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil,” where he lost in the quarterfinals. He did not get an official bout in the UFC after appearing on the reality show.

Bellator 173’s Liam McGeary Focused on Training Smarter After Phil Davis Loss

In hindsight, Liam McGeary admits he might have been overprepared heading into his second light heavyweight title defense against Phil Davis at Bellator 163 this past November.   The hard work didn’t show, at least in terms of the end result, as Davis dominated the fight to claim a unanimous verdict and the 205-pound strap. It was McGeary’s first loss in 12 professional appearances.   “Everything I did in the training camp was fine. The coaching I got, everything I was learning was spot on. I did too much of it,” McGeary told “I was cramming way too much into a 14-week fight camp. It was ridiculous trying to compete four times a day, six days a week. I ain’t no spring chicken, so I have to respect my body. I have to respect the need to rest between training sessions....It was a bit too much.   “My body started feeling fatigued. My body wasn’t really working well with my brain. What my brain wanted my body to do, it just wasn’t doing what I wanted it to do... I just started getting frustrated.

Opinion: Best and Worst of UFC’s Heavyweight Division

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * What the hell did I watch Saturday? I’m honestly not sure if, even by Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight standards, Derrick Lewis is actually good. He has skills, and he may just be incredibly worn out from his schedule in the last two years, but I just watched him beat someone in Travis Browne who is, in many ways, the better fighter, and I’m not even sure how he did it. Browne looked the best he has in years, quickly hurting Lewis with body kicks before...not really doing anything? He was right not to rush in against Lewis, but he just kind of...stopped fighting with any kind of plan, which was always the story with him. Even with Lewis constantly clutching his abdomen in a fashion that resembled a child who ate too much ice cream more than a hurt prize fighter, Browne didn’t look to finish with kicks the way he did against Alistair Overeem .

To be fair, calling Andrade (16-5) a striker is only half selling her as her ground game is on full attack. She’s a complete fighter that pressures her opponents and hits them with big shots. Many are saying this will be Joanna’s biggest test, but I still say it’s a long shot.

Sherdog Prospect Watch: Aspen Ladd

They exist in an ever evolving sport, which is why Aspen Ladd and her coaches compare her skills to a Lego Ferrari with a never-ending amount of pieces. Ladd has been adding to her tool kit since she started her formal training at age 14. The undefeated women’s bantamweight prospect first walked into an MMA gym in hopes of finding a way to stay in shape. Little did she know that she would be hooked soon after. “Within a week, I fell in love with the sport; the competition is what got me hooked to it,” Ladd told “You always have something new to learn, and it always keeps you on your toes.” Ladd has enjoyed the luxury of training at the same gym since she started her MMA journey: MMA Gold in El Dorado Hills, California. She stood out from her peers from the beginning. “The first time I saw Aspen in there, she was not training MMA,” said longtime coach Jim West. “She was in there with her brother, and they were just rolling around on the mats.” He remembers turning to one of his colleagues and saying, “That girl is going to make it.

Bisping Believes He Took Luke Rockhold’s Soul

“What is Luke Rockhold doing? When did he say he’s going to fight again? What are his plans? I do believe we are now almost in March. That fight was in June. I don’t know what happened there, but I think I took his soul. I don’t think we’ll ever see Luke Rockhold again. I beat the sh*t out of him. I don’t know, I think he’s done. The way he went down, I think so. Why hasn’t he fought again? A lot of time has passed. If that were me, I would’ve been right back in there.”
