Marion Reneau has an idea for UFC matchmakers after beating Sara McMann at UFC on FOX 28

“This was a big fight, and I had been asked for a top-10 opponent because I needed to prove to myself and everybody else that I deserve to be there, that I’ve earned my spot in the top 10,” Reneau told MMAjunkie after her win. “Not just, ‘Oh, they’re moving to the 125-pound division, so you’re in the top 10 (by default).’ I had to prove it to not only everybody else, but myself. And it was just kind of like, ‘See, I told you I can do it, I told you I can hang with them.’

Agree it's a judgment call. Just seems we're so scared of influencing the fight with even a brief pause that, in practice, the tie goes to the cheater in these situations. If the penalty for trying to land an illegal blow is your opponent gets a sec to breathe, that's fair IMO.

UFC on Fox 28 Prelims: Brian Kelleher Upsets Former Champion Renan Barao in Orlando

Brian Kelleher got the best of Renan Barao in what was perhaps a career-altering performance. Kelleher swamped the former Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight titleholder with pace and persistence, as he claimed a unanimous verdict in the featured UFC on Fox 28 prelim on Saturday at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. All three cageside judges scored it for Kelleher (19-8, 3-1 UFC): 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28. Barao (34-6, 9-5 UFC) landed his share of shots -- his calf kicks were particularly effective -- but spent much of the fight on the defensive, shuffling backward in the face of oncoming aggression. Kelleher moved forward with punches, clinched when the opportunities presented themselves and even secured a takedown on the notoriously difficult-to-ground Brazilian. The 31-year-old saved his best for last. Kelleher had “The Baron” in trouble at various points throughout the third round, and in the closing seconds cut loose with savage hooks with both hands. Pinned to the fence by the repeated impacts, Barao could barely stand when the horn sounded.

Conor McGregor Tried to Fight Frankie Edgar at UFC 222, But Was Denied |

I am fighting again. Period. I am the best at this. I put my name forward to step in at UFC 222 to face Frankie Edgar when Max Holloway pulled out, but I was told there wasn't enough time to generate the money that the UFC would need. I was excited about bouncing in last minute and taking out the final featherweight, without all the rest of the stuff that comes with this game. Please respect the insane amount of work outside the fight game that I have put in. On top of the fighting. I am here. It is on them to come and get me. Because I am here. Jeremy Stephens defends knee at UFC on FOX 28, says nothing dirty about it

“He did raise his hand up. I threw a knee. I didn’t feel it land. But that’s not what finished him. Dan Miragliotta – if he thought it was illegal, he could’ve stopped the fight. That’s not my job. Under this state, those are the rules. It is what it is. I took advantage of the opportunity. I go for the kill, I train for the finish, that’s what I do.”

UFC on Fox 28 Bonuses: Stephens, Latifi, Jouban, Saunders Earn $50K Awards

Jeremy Stephens lived up to his hard-hitting reputation at UFC on Fox 28 , and he was compensated accordingly for his work. The 31-year-old garnered a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for his second-round knockout of Josh Emmett in Saturday’s main event at the Amway Center in Orlando, Fla. “Lil Heathen” dropped his foe with a counter left hand and eventually sealed with victory with a pair of vicious elbows on the mat at the 1:35 mark of round two. Meanwhile, Ilir Latifi earned the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” paycheck for his first-round submission of Ovince St. Preux in a featured light heavyweight scrap. A left hook from the Swede sent St. Preux to the canvas and when “OSP” returned to his feet, Latifi rocked him with another left before securing the fight-ending guillotine choke. St. Preux went unconscious 3:48 into round one. Elsewhere, Alan Jouban and Ben Saunders received “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their entertaining preliminary welterweight scrap. While Saunders kept the pressure on his opponent for most of the bout, it was Jouban who landed the fight’s most decisive blows.

A lot of people don't understand the grounded fighter rule. Here, let us help ...

The source of the current confusion seems to be the change to the rules about hand position. Under the new rules, you can still use your hands to make yourself a grounded opponent, but the requirements are more stringent. No longer can you put one finger or even just one hand down and be (legally) safe from knees or kicks to the head. Now you have to have both hands down, either with fists or palms flat on the mat.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - A Man of Many Hats

Jeremy Stephens has worn many hats since he joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship roster on his 21st birthday in 2007, from prospect to gatekeeper to journeyman. “Lil’ Heathen” has now added title contender to the list. Stephens overcame an early knockdown to obliterate Josh Emmett with punches and elbows in the second round of their UFC on Fox 28 main event on Feb. 24 in Orlando, Florida. The longtime Alliance MMA rep drew the curtain on Emmett 1:35 into Round 2, as he recorded his third consecutive victory at 145 pounds. It was Stephens’ 28th appearance inside the Octagon, tying him with Jim Miller for second on the UFC’s all-time list. Afterward, the 31-year-old Des Moines, Iowa, native used the network-television platform to call for a featherweight title shot, though he figures to have to wait for scenarios involving Frankie Edgar , Brian Ortega and undisputed champion Max Holloway to play out. With his latest win, Stephens climbs to No. 7 in our 145-pound rankings, bumping the previously 10th-ranked Patricio Freire to the contenders list.

Jeremy Stephens Declares Himself Hardest-Hitting Featherweight, Wants Title Shot Next

Although it seems as if he’s been around forever, Jeremy Stephens appears to only be getting better. The 31-year-old known as “Lil Heathen” earned his third consecutive featherweight triumph in the UFC on Fox 28 main event Saturday night, as he knocked out Josh Emmett 1:35 into the second round of their clash at the Amway Center in Orlando, Fla. Stephens dropped his foe with a left hook, and unloaded with a barrage of vicious elbows to the head, eventually knocking Emmett unconscious to earn the finish. Emmett entered the bout with a considerable amount of hype following a resounding knockout win over Ricardo Lamas at UFC on Fox 26. He lived up to that hype by dropping Stephens in the opening stanza but ultimately paid the price for his willingness to trade with the heavy-handed veteran. “And now we know who the hardest hitting 145er is,” Stephens said. “Hey, no disrespect. Josh put me down on my butt; I had to get my wits back underneath me. You cannot break me; I am unbreakable. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in my career but that’s a testament to never give up.
