CSAC Fines Ex-Champ Jon Jones $205K, Revokes License for Failed Drug Test at UFC 214

While it still might not be clear how the anabolic steroid Turinabol ended up in Jon Jones ’ system during an in-competition drug test in relation to UFC 214, there is at least some clarity regarding the punishment for his transgression. During a hearing on Tuesday, the California State Athletic Commission revoked Jones’ license in the state and fined him 40 percent of his purse -- $205,000 – from UFC 214. The revocation comes with a one-year period of ineligibility, meaning that Jones will not be able to reapply for a license until August at the earliest. That term is expected to be recognized in other states and by the UFC, as well. Jones was also fined an additional $5,000 by CSAC. Jones defeated Daniel Cormier via third-round TKO at UFC 214 in Anaheim, Calif., on July 29. That result was overturned to a no contest and Jones was stripped of the 205-pound belt once news of the failed drug test surfaced. “Let USADA give their discipline, when that’s completed, I’ll be inclined to support Jones in getting his license back,” CSAC Executive Officer Andy Foster said.

Sherdog Remembers: Day the Lightweight Division Nearly Died

Come on? Who in their right mind picked the “Grizzly Bear,” I mean “Maine-iac?” Congratulations to those of you who went on the record with your Sylvia pick, both of you. I saw you guys working. That was one of those “I will pick this guy since no one else thinks he will win and just in case he does I will look brilliant” predictions. Well done, mission accomplished. Hell, the only thing more surprising than Sylvia’s stunning win was the fact that my pal actually bought a round at the bar after the event. I guess there is a first time for everything. I wonder how long “The Maine-iac Grizzly Bear” (oh, that rolls off the tongue nicely) will get to cinch the UFC gold around his waist since the recent past has not been too kind to the champs. I hope for his sake and the UFC’s as well, he can bring some stability to the picture. The heavyweight champion turnstile that has been spinning out of control since the Barnett suspension has put the clamps on any effective marketing of what should be the most noticeable personality in our sport. A big congratulations to Sylvia, whom I am sure is enjoying his huge win, made all the more sweet when you add in the fact that just about everyone gave him little or no chance to pull off the big upset.

Twitter reacts to Jon Jones' CSAC hearing, punishment for failed UFC 214 drug test

The former UFC light heavyweight champion Jones (21-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) sat before the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) today in Anaheim, Calif., and attempted to put forth a defense for a failed drug test around the time of his July 2017 fight with Daniel Cormier at UFC 214.

Amazon Inks Deal to Stream UFC Pay-Per-View Events Beginning with UFC 222

Beginning on Saturday, fight fans will have another platform to view Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-view events. According to a report from Sports Business Daily , Amazon has signed a deal with the Las Vegas-based promotion to stream pay-per-view events beginning with Saturday’s UFC 222 card. Pay-per-views will be available for $64.99 via Amazon Prime Video, though viewers do not have to be Amazon Prime members to order them. Specific terms of the deal were not initially disclosed. According to the report, Amazon Head of Sports Jim DeLorenzo led negotiations for Amazon, while a group of WME-IMG executives — including IMG Media Senior VP & Head of North America Hillary Mandel and UFC Executive VP & CFO Andrew Schleimer — handled talks for the UFC. The news comes as the UFC’s television deal with Fox draws to a close at the conclusion of 2018. Fox has reportedly offered in the neighborhood of $200 million per year in a new deal, far below the rumored $450 million UFC TV rights were valued at upon the sale of the company.

5 Things You Might Not Know About Frankie Edgar

One of the most respected and accomplished competitors in Ultimate Fighting Championship history, former lightweight titleholder Frankie Edgar has for years been a picture of excellence in the lower weight classes. In his quest to become a two-division champion, Edgar will meet Brian Ortega in a title eliminator at 145 pounds at UFC 222 this Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Ahead of Edgar’s co-main event clash with Ortega, here are five things you might not know about him: 1. He appeared in seven consecutive title fights. From 2010 to 2013, Edgar only fought when a championship was on the line. In those seven appearances, he fought B.J. Penn twice, Gray Maynard twice, Benson Henderson twice and Jose Aldo once. Edgar’s failed bid to unseat Aldo as featherweight champion at UFC 156 ended his remarkable run on Feb. 2, 2013. Six of the seven bouts went the full 25 minutes. 2. Rematches with four different fighters dot his resume. Nobody knows the rematch any better than Edgar, who has engaged in a number of rivalries during his career. He has faced four different fighters on more than one occasion, including trilogies with Penn and Maynard.

Light Heavyweights Phil Davis, Linton Vassell to Clash at Bellator 200 in London

A battle of light heavyweight contenders is set for Bellator 200 , as Phil Davis and Linton Vassell will square off in London on May 25. The promotion announced the pairing on Tuesday. Bellator 200 takes place at the SSE Arena and features a middleweight championship tilt between Rafael Carvalho and Gegard Mousasi as well as a welterweight showdown pitting Michael Page against David Rickels . The card will be televised via tape delay in the United States on the Paramount Network at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT. Davis, the former 205-pound champion, won his first four bouts in the promotion before relinquishing the title to UFC rival Ryan Bader at Bellator 180 in June. “Mr. Wonderful” rebounded from that defeat in his most recent outing, outpointing the previously unbeaten Leo Leite at Bellator 186 on Nov. 3. Vassell, meanwhile, bested Emanuel Newton , Francis Carmont and Liam McGeary to earn a shot at Bader’s belt at Bellator 186. “The Swarm” came up short, however, losing to Bader via second-round technical knockout.

Oh wow, this hockey fight ended with an MMA-caliber face-plant knockout after one punch

For reasons unknown, Colton Kehler of the Edmonton Oil Kings and Tanner Nagel of the Swift Current Broncos decided to come to blows. But if I’m being honest, the term “blows” isn’t accurate because there was just one – and it was a vicious left hand from Kehler that sent Nagel face-planting onto the ice.

Referee Rob Hinds Discusses Conclusion of Jeremy Stephens-Josh Emmett

It has been replayed countless times, from different angles and at different speeds, yet it’s still dividing fight fans whether referee Dan Miragliotta should have intervened during the ending sequence between Jeremy Stephens and Josh Emmett at UFC on Fox 28 . Referee Rob Hinds talked with MMA Fighting about the decision and how difficult it is for the referee given how quickly everything happens. “This is absolutely the toughest part about what we do,” Hinds told MMA Fighting. “Within seconds we have to decide was that legal, was that illegal? Do I do something, do I not do something? Do I verbally warn, do I not? So, within that split, split second, there’s several things that can happen.” Miragliotta did not rule it an illegal knee and Stephens continued the beatdown on his way to a knockout. The replays show the knee of Jeremy Stephens connecting to the back of Emmett’s head although on the way down from the initial strike. “If it was glancing or not, it’s still illegal,” said Hinds, who is a licensed referee certification trainer.

Alexey Oleynik, UFC Heavyweight: 'School shooting reminds me I'm a father first' |

I read the text again just to make sure it was correct — it was. As the father of five kids, ages 2 to 16, I was consumed by thoughts of death and violence. My daughter is a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., and was texting me from the mass shooting that would claim 17 lives and injure many more. Thankfully, Polina survived and was uninjured, but for several hours I struggled to retain the composure I have during fights. Her text reminded me that I am a father first, and a fighter second.

Michael Bisping to Luke Rockhold: ‘I’ve Got No Problem Knocking You Out Again’

Luke Rockhold ’s days fighting at 185 pounds may be numbered. Michael Bisping ’s days fighting may be numbered — period. With that in mind, there may be no better time for a trilogy fight between the two rivals, at least according to “The Count.” Bisping’s future has remained unclear since being finished twice in a three-week span by Georges St. Pierre and Kelvin Gastelum in November. The outspoken Brit initially targeted a farewell bout at UFC Fight Night 127 in London on March 17 before removing himself from consideration for the event. He also admitted that friends and family have urged him to call it quits without stepping into the Octagon for one last hurrah. Rockhold, who Bisping upset at UFC 199 to claim the middleweight title, might be just the opponent to keep the competitive juices flowing. Rockhold earned a second-round submission win over Bisping in their first meeting at UFC Fight Night 55. “I exposed Luke Rockhold,” Bisping said on his "Believe You Me” podcast . “I knocked him out. David Branch nearly knocked him out.

UFC on Fox 28 Post-Mortem: Sunshine State Savagery

Jeremy Stephens stepped into the Octagon for the 28th time on Saturday in Orlando, Florida, as he squared off with Team Alpha Male ’s Josh Emmett in the UFC on Fox 28 main event. For Stephens, it was a chance to string together three straight wins for the first time since 2014 and inch ever closer to a title shot that has eluded him since he entered the Ultimate Fighting Championship more than a decade ago. A hard left hook, a controversial knee strike and a few devastating elbows later, Stephens exited the cage one step closer to his goal after picking up the 19th knockout victory of his career. Both fighters fired quickly. Stephens took the center of the Octagon and immediately began headhunting, as did Emmett. In the middle of the first round, Stephens moved in with a lunging uppercut, and Emmett connected on a short counter right hand that planted “Lil’ Heathen” on the canvas, with Emmett moving in for a kill shot. Emmett managed to land a few good strikes before Stephens stood, his wits seemingly gathered. The round ended with both fighters exchanging kicks and the crowd roaring with anticipation.
