Woodley on returning Gastelum's penalty money, fan reaction to fights that go the distance & more

Bloody Elbow recently spoke with Woodley who gave a little more detail behind his generous gesture, as well as his feelings on the critical reception his fight with Gastelum garnered, who he feels deserves the next title shot, whether he's made enough money to retire comfortably and the organization's disregard for the rankings system when making title fights. Here's what he had to say:

A Fighter's Story: Meet Claire Tietgen

There were more than a few smiling faces in Las Vegas last weekend; fighters who won their bouts at UFC 183, gamblers who hit big betting the Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX, and those who were just happy to be away from the daily routine, even if only for a weekend. But you wouldn’t be out of line if you guessed that the biggest smile in Vegas belonged to 12-year-old Claire Tietgen, a young lady from Prairie Village, Kansas who had a UFC fan’s dream weekend at the MGM Grand. “Everything was one hundred percent awesome,” Claire said. “Nothing’s been higher than meeting Demi Lovato and getting her autograph, talking to (UFC women’s bantamweight champion) Ronda (Rousey) and meeting (UFC president) Dana (White). These are big moments that no one could ever imagine.” Claire certainly couldn’t, at least not over the last few years, when days weren’t filled with smiles, but with tears, as constant physical and verbal bullying in school left her contemplating suicide. For her parents, Charlie and Denise, it was a crushing blow, a situation that left them feeling helpless.

UFC antitrust lawsuit plaintiffs subpoena Twitter and YouTube records for over 25 accounts

The filing also gave us two other pieces of information. (1) We were given a taste of the types of witnesses Zuffa may call as they attempt to show that MMA promotions compete against a broader base of sports. Top Rank, Wynn Las Vegas and Lion Fights were specifically mentioned as potential witnesses. (2) Zuffa made a not-so-veiled threat that they may counterclaim the fighters for "breach of the forum selection clause"  and seek damages for "travel and other costs incurred." Since it's highly likely the fighters are paying their lawyers on a contingent fee basis, this is Zuffa's way of threatening to take money out of the fighters' pockets.

Bertrand Russell on Immortality, Why Religion Exists, and What “The Good Life” Really Means

Fear is the basis of religious dogma, as of so much else in human life. Fear of human beings, individually or collectively, dominates much of our social life, but it is fear of nature that gives rise to religion. The antithesis of mind and matter is … more or less illusory; but there is another antithesis which is more important — that, namely, between things that can be affected by our desires and things that cannot be so affected. The line between the two is neither sharp nor immutable — as science advances, more and more things are brought under human control. Nevertheless there remain things definitely on the other side. Among these are all the large facts of our world, the sort of facts that are dealt with by astronomy. It is only facts on or near the surface of the earth that we can, to some extent, mould to suit our desires. And even on the surface of the earth our powers are very limited. Above all, we cannot prevent death, although we can often delay it.

Video: Chris Weidman would like Anderson Silva to retire, says he doesn't deserve title shot

"In the fight, you know, I'm happy that he came back. He was healthy, he was able to go out there and get a W. But do I think he looked impressive? No. I don't think he's what everybody thought Anderson would look like and what he could do to Nick Diaz. There was a lot going against him with the leg injury, it didn't seem like he was kicking the legs as much as he usually could. But, you know, I don't know. I don't think he deserves a title shot. There's a lot of other guys that I think are better than him right now."

The Fighter & The Kid

This podcast has jumped to the top of my UFC/MMA podcast list - but c'mon, once a week?. I really feel like Brendan and Bryan should be able to do at least 2 eps a week, or maybe 2 hours a pop - I mean, what else do these guys have to do during the day? Brendan habitually mispronouncing every major UFC fighter's name on the roster is a nice touch, too. I also want to hear more about Bryan's mad greco skills. I think he should do each episode shirtless.

Chris Weidman on Anderson Silva: ‘I’d really just like to see him retire’

After all the tears had been shed and wishes of gratitude said, Silva was noncommittal about his fighting future, offering only a vague indication that any decision would made with the help of his family. And while Weidman doesn't have a horse in this race, he hopes that with the ghosts of Silva's broken leg finally put to rest, Silva allows himself to walk away from the sport with his head held high, avoiding the disastrous exits that have befallen so many pugilistic icons of the past.

Terrion Ware Believes a Win at Friday's RFA 23 Leaves Him Knocking on the UFC's Door |

Ed Soares on Nick Diaz’s antics: ‘That guy’s got balls’

One person who got a kick out of the whole thing was Silva’s friend and manager, Ed Soares, who took the fight in cageside Saturday night in Las Vegas. "Speaking to my business partner Jorge [Guimaraes], he said that was one of the greatest shoots he’d ever seen," Soares said during an appearance on the MMA Hour on Monday. "Nick Diaz going and laying down, Nick Diaz doing what he was doing, and not only doing that…but doing that to Anderson Silva? "I mean, if you’re going to lay down in a mixed martial arts fight in the UFC, you’ve got to have balls. But to do that against Anderson Silva, dude, you’re an a**hole, man. That guy’s got balls." Soares meant it more as a compliment derived from awe than anything else. Diaz, who at another time appeared to be picking his underwear from his butt, still stood in with Silva. He wasn’t in there to play games, ultimately. He was trying to win the fight, and that part wasn’t lost on Soares. "He backed it up. He went out there and went toe-to-toe with him," he said. "I’ve got nothing but respect for Nick Diaz."

UFC fight bookings roundup – 1/27 – 2/3/15

Since the UFC has decided to produce 50+ events in 2015, there is a remarkable amount of fighter signings and new match-ups being set up throughout any given week. Many of these new signings are for match-ups that take place on the undercard, or on the Fight Pass portion of a PPV, so we are going to continue with a new weekly (or bi-weekly if needed) series of articles where we take a brief look at each and every bout booked by the promotion in one place.

Why aren't commissions doing more to fix MMA judging? In California, one is trying

“We can do analytics to see how often judges are using 10-8 rounds, how often they’re split, to where one judge has it 10-9 and another has it 10-8, and that really gives us some firepower to say, ‘Hey, you scored 100 rounds in the last year, but you didn’t have one 10-8 round, whereas the average judge has five percent,’ or something like that,” Podgorski said. “It helps us encourage judges to think about it more broadly and not be so dead set on boxing-style scoring.”
