Opinion: Anderson Silva's drug test doesn't make him a cheater, it makes him desperate

On the other hand, drug test failures, in their rarity, become big, public affairs. When a fighter fails a test, the world knows (unless we aren't told). Those few foolish enough to test positive become the venting points for fan anger and for suspicions about a broader culture that only ever seems to get mentioned in dubious percentages and "guys at other gyms." Fans can feel like they know athletes are using, but they don't know exactly who or how much.  So, in those circumstances, are all fighters cheaters? Are the fighters who test positive somehow bigger cheaters than the fighters who we assume use and don't? It seems simplistic to draw a hard line between the two groups. If I assume that most fighters have taken PED's at some point in their career, with any variable amount of consistency, then the conversation about fighters who get caught isn't by necessity a conversation about "cheaters."

Michael Bisping: Chris Weidman really did a number on Anderson Silva

“The more I thought about it, I thought, ‘Hold on a minute. This doesn’t surprise me at all,'” he said. “I’m just so bloody naive. I really am. I really just assume everybody’s out there doing it the old-fashioned way, doing it the way I do it. And the more and more that comes out, I realize that people don’t. People are looking for shortcuts. People are looking to cheat.”

Colorado's Pot Revenue Is So High The State May Give Residents Money Back

Republicans and Democrats say there's no good reason to put pot taxes back into people's pockets, and state officials are scrambling to figure out how to avoid doling out the money. The 10: The Best of February Inside the Octagon

One month down, 11 to go. The first month of 2015 delivered a ton of exciting action inside the Octagon. From Paul Felder’s spinning back fist knockout of Danny Castillo and all things Conor McGregor to Anthony Johnson silencing the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm and a compelling UFC 183 card, January has been jam packed and there is no real slowing down in February. This is The 10, our regular look at the best action headed to the Octagon in the month ahead. UFC Fight Night: Henderson vs. Thatch (February 14 in Broomfield, Colorado) Ray Borg vs. Chris Kelades The main card of this month’s initial event kicks off with a pair of flyweights that are operating under the radar, but have the potential to be factors by year’s end. Kelades made his UFC debut on five days’ notice, turning in a gusty effort in a victory over Paddy Holohan in his home province of Nova Scotia back in October. Not only did the 33-year-old pick up an impressive win, but he collected a bonus check for Fight of the Night as well. Now poised for his sophomore appearance, a similar effort here will have “The Greek Assassin” entering the rankings in the 125-pound division.

Alexander Shlemenko Expects to Showcase Striking Against Manhoef at Bellator 133

Alexander Shlemenko plans to reclaim the Bellator MMA middleweight title. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com Make no mistake: Alexander Shlemenko is excited about his main-event showdown with Melvin Manhoef at Bellator 133 . Not only is it a fight for the fans, it’s also a matchup for the fighters, an opportunity for two striking specialists to do what they do best, largely uninhibited by the threat of an impending takedown. “The first time I saw Melvin Manhoef, it was many years ago when I was only starting my professional career, and I started fighting in K-1,” Shlemenko this week told Sherdog.com. “I never thought there would be a day when I would be able to fight him. That’s why it makes me very happy that I can test myself against such a strong, explosive knockout puncher as Melvin, and I can match my striking style against his.” That’s all well and good, but Shlemenko-Manhoef could have had even more than bragging rights at stake. When Manhoef knocked out Doug Marshall in September, he was expected to receive a middleweight title shot against the winner of Shlemenko- Brandon Halsey .

Glory 19 fight preview and prediction: Welterweight Tournament

Based on my semifinals, this is Nieky Holzken vs. Raymond Daniels - a fight that we could have seen at Glory 13. Had it taken place there, I suspect Holzken would have ripped through him, capitalizing on those same defensive holes exposed by Valtellini, but doing so with even greater violence. Now, Daniels seems to have closed up some of those gaps, and when you consider Holzken's year long absence and the possibility of some ring rust, plus a potentially grueling semifinal against Stetcurenko, the result is not as cut and dry. That said, Holzken remains one of the sport's very elite fighters, and while Daniels's stay may prove a bit tricky at first, I see Holzken figuring him out, working the body to slow him down, and ultimately walking away the tournament champion again to set up a much anticipated Holzken vs. Valtellini world title fight.

The Matter of Black Lives - The New Yorker

The battle over Moynihan’s report was a battle over the legacy of slavery, too, and Orlando Patterson was well qualified to join it. He earned his Ph.D. in 1965, with a dissertation on the sociology of Jamaican slavery, and in his best-known books, “Slavery and Social Death” and “Freedom in the Making of Western Culture,” he broadened his focus to consider the institution of slavery and how it gave rise to the ideal of freedom. (He has also published a trio of novels set in Jamaica.) In 1973, as the anti-Moynihan wave was cresting, Patterson offered a partial defense: rebutting Ryan’s rebuttal, he wrote that writers like Moynihan “in no way blame the victim.” In fact, Patterson argued, Moynihan’s report was overly “deterministic,” portraying black Americans as the inevitable victims of a long and oppressive history. Even more than Du Bois, Moynihan stressed the debilitating legacy of American slavery, asserting that it was “indescribably worse” than any form of bondage in the history of the world. Although Moynihan’s fiercest critics didn’t dispute this, they found themselves arguing that slavery had been less destructive than Moynihan thought: they celebrated the resilience of the black family in its non-standard forms.

Lightweight Title Fight Headlines Bellator 136 in April | MMAWeekly.com

“I’m really looking forward to this one,” said Bellator President Scott Coker . “Brooks and Schilling were two huge components to our successful show last November, and I wanted to get them another fight as quickly as possible. With Will Brooks, you’ve got a phenomenal athlete with a tremendous personality. He is someone who brings it each and every time he gets in the cage. Joe Schilling is one of those incredible strikers who just has danger written all over him. I think our team has really done a great job in finding both of these guys extremely tough opponents in Jansen and Carvalho respectively, and I’m happy that I’ll have one of the best seats in the house.”

Bethe Correia Continues to Vie for a Shot at Ronda | FIGHTLAND

Bethe isn’t scheduled to fight anyone at the moment, however she has plenty of plausible opponents in the bantamweight category. She should most likely fight Marina Shafir to complete the non-ronda Horsewomen triumvirate. Were Ronda to lose the fight—doesn’t that sound insane at this point—against Cat Zingano, would Bethe still want Ronda? Is this beef with Ronda or is she just super hungry for the belt? She could also fight Holly Holm, Ashlee Evans-Smith, Miesha Tate… all worthy opponents.

Chris Weidman thinks idea of interim middleweight title is 'kind of stupid'

"You know, I thought it was kind of stupid," Weidman said. "I'm just like, hang on, Anthony Pettis was out for a year. Johny Hendricks was out for like nine months. Cain Velasquez , they just did an interim title, he was out for how long? A year and a half? So I've been out for six months, I just get an injury now that's going to [hold] me out six-to-eight weeks, then I'm ready to go. So for them to do an interim belt is kind of crazy. It doesn't match up to [how much time] other guys (have missed) when they've done interim belts. I don't have an ACL tear. I'm not going to be out for a year, indefinitely, no matter what. Hopefully this thing heals even faster than six-to-eight weeks.

Jake Matthews: Nothing scares me more than just being average

While Matthews is certainly living the dream of many fighters right now, he never wants to feel like he's actually accomplished something great by just ending up in the UFC. He doesn't want to have 20 fights inside the Octagon and finish his career with a resume that's speckled with a rollercoaster of wins and losses.

Rashad Evans wants to get knee back to 100 percent before returning

"The time that I had off and not being on at that level, to jump right back into it, kind of aggravated my knee a little bit," Evans said. "I just need to make sure I just take my time with it and truly build up to strength. I was maybe trying to cheat the system a little bit and maybe go, and not fully do the rehab to where I was fully strong and fully where I needed to be before I go back out there and compete."

Twitter Mailbag: Say it ain't so, Anderson Silva!

As for Silva, in a way I wonder if this makes it more likely that he’ll fight again, since who wants to end like this? It’s his first failed test, so he’ll probably get suspended for a year. He’d be 40 by the time he’s eligible to fight again, but that’s not so old for a fighter who hasn’t taken much damage in his career. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him try a comeback/image-rehabilitation tour. I just hope he’s clean if and when he does try it. And I hope the UFC would have the good sense to book him somewhere with a trustworthy commission to make sure of it.

Beyond the Octagon: Wins for UFC vet Nam Phan and Julian "Let Me Bang, Bro" Lane, plus former One FC champ Soo Chul Kim's flying knee

Lane appeared on the sixteenth season of The Ultimate Fighter (Team Carwin vs. Team Nelson), in which he lost an opening-round contest to Bristol Marunde by unanimous decision. His impassioned pleas of "Let me bang, bro!" remain one of the few takeaways from that generally panned season. After the airing of that season, Lane would enter a 1-3-1 slump, including losses to recent UFC acquisitions George Sullivan and Paul Felder. He's turned things around since, though, and was riding a three-fight win streak into his title defense on Friday. After five narrow rounds, he'd notch his fourth straight, taking a split-decision from Cruz.
