Max Holloway Issues Statement After Pulling Out of UFC 222 Main Event

Max Holloway has confirmed his withdrawal from UFC 222 , and it appears that some type of leg injury is the cause of his injury woes. “I asked the docs if we could cut off my leg then ask the commission if I could fight handicapped,” Holloway wrote on Twitter. “They told me at the end of the day it is what it is… Had dozens of family from Hawaii coming up for this one... I know it sucks but hang in there. We're going to reschedule ASAP.” I asked the docs if we could cut off my leg then ask the commission if I could fight handicapped. They told me at the end of the day it is what it is… Had dozens of family from Hawaii coming up for this one... I know it sucks but hang in there. We're going to reschedule asap — Max Holloway (@BlessedMMA) February 4, 2018 Holloway was supposed to lock horns with Frankie Edgar in the UFC 222 main event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on March 3. The featherweights were originally supposed to meet at UFC 218 in December, but Edgar had to withdraw from that bout due to injury.

Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night 125

Rarely has there been such a glaring and unsettling skill discrepancy in the modern Ultimate Fighting Championship . Former bantamweight title contender Valentina Shevchenko was ruthless and clinical in her debut at 125 pounds, as she annihilated Parana Vale Tudo prospect Priscila Cachoeira in the UFC Fight Night 125 co-main event on Saturday at Guilherme Paraense Arena in Belem, Brazil. Cachoeira tapped to a rear-naked choke 4:25 into the second round, this after being drawn and quartered for the better part of nine minutes. The FightMetric statistics defy belief. Shevchenko connected on 84 percent of the significant strikes she attempted and outlanded the previously unbeaten Brazilian by a startling 230-3 margin in total strikes. It was a flawless performance if there ever was one. Shevchenko did the vast majority of her damage on the ground, where she punished Cachoeira with punches and elbows, one of which drew blood -- and copious amounts of it -- in the first round. In the aftermath of UFC Fight Night “Machida vs.

UFC Fight Night 125: By the Numbers

Lyoto Machida did just enough to send the Brazilian fans home happy. “The Dragon” edged Eryk Anders via split decision in the UFC Fight Night 125 main event in Belem, Brazil, on Saturday, ending a three-fight skid for the former light heavyweight champion. While scorecards in the middleweight bout will certainly be up for debate, there is plenty elsewhere to examine as well. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 125, with statistics courtesy of Related » UFC Belem Round-by-Round Scoring 12: Unofficial media scorecards, of the 15 tracked by , that awarded the main event to Anders. Only three saw the fight in favor of Machida. 30: Significant strikes by which Machida outlanded Anders in the five-round contest. “The Dragon” outlanded his foe 15 to 2 in round one, 14 to 6 in round two, 10 to 9 in round three, 10 to 6 in round four and 13 to 9 in round five. 21: Significant leg strikes landed by Machida. MMA community reacts to Lyoto Machida turning back the clock against Eryk Anders |

Last night, in the main event of the UFC’s anticipated stop in Belem, Brazil, former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida attempted to rebound from a string of stoppage losses opposite dangerous undefeated prospect Eryk Anders . Though Anders certainly didn’t make it easy for him, Machida ultimately earned his first win since December of 2014 with a split decision .

UFC to Hold First Pay-Per-View Card at Chicago’s United Center on June 9

CHI-TOWN! The UFC arrives June 9th for our first PPV in the Windy City. #UFC225 — UFC (@ufc) February 4, 2018 The Windy City will be hosting an Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-view for the first time ever this year. The Las Vegas-based promotion announced Saturday night that UFC 225 will take place at the United Center in Chicago on June 9. No bouts were announced for the event. The UFC is no stranger to Chicago, as the city has hosted five UFC on Fox cards. Most recently, UFC on Fox 20 took place on July 23, 2016 and saw Valentina Shevchenko take a five-round verdict over Holly Holm in the evening’s main event. The promotion did hold a pay-per-view near Chicago in 2008, when UFC 90 took place at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. In the main event of that card, Anderson Silva retained his middleweight belt with a TKO win over Patrick Cote .

UFC Fight Night 125 Prelims: Split Decision Sends Sergio Moraes Past Tim Means in Brazil

Sérgio Moraes beats Tim Means by split decision! Did the judges get it right? #UFCBelem — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) February 4, 2018 Wild aggression was Sergio Moraes ’ best friend. The multiple-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion swung for the fences for the better part of 15 minutes, as he eked out a split decision over Tim Means in the featured UFC Fight Night 125 prelim on Saturday at Guilherme Paraense Arena in Belem, Brazil. All three cageside judges scored it 29-28: Phillipe Iorio and Tony Weeks for Moraes, Marcos Rosales for Means. As has been his custom, Moraes (13-3-1, 7-2-1 UFC) committed to winging punches with both hands in all three rounds. Some of them landed and many did not, but he nevertheless got a rise out of the crowd and got the attention of the judges. Means (27-10-1, 9-7 UFC) started to counter effectively in the second round and came on strong in the third, where he paired a stiff jab with sharp left hands, moved the Brazilian backward and cut loose with combinations, two, three and sometimes four punches at a time.

Priscila Cachoeira looking at surgery for ACL and meniscus tears suffered in loss to Shevchenko

John Moraga Faces Wilson Reis in UFC on FOX 29 Flyweight Showdown |

Reis (22-8), like Moraga, has had a shot at UFC flyweight gold, but came up short. His championship sting is much fresher, however, as he lost to 125-pound kingpin Demetrious Johnson just last year. He followed that with a second-round knockout loss to Henry Cejudo a few months later.

Anatomy of a bloodbath: Late stoppage wasn't the only issue with Shevchenko vs. Cachoeira

Cachoeira (8-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) was as good a sacrificial lamb as any. She came in with an unbeaten record, even if it was against lower tier competition, but she had no real chance to do much against a fighter of Shevchenko’s caliber and anybody who saw a minute of her fight footage knew it.

Lyoto Machida explains Michael Bisping callout: Fight should've already happened

Machida, 39, entered UFC Fight Night 125 on a three-fight losing skid and with questions about his longevity. “The Dragon” temporarily put off those questions when he edged Anders on the scorecard in his hometown of Belem, and although he entered the fight as an underdog, Machida said he was confident he would rebound.

Lorenz Larkin Returns to Form, Sails Past Fernando Gonzalez in Bellator 193 Headliner

Bellator MMA ’s investment in Lorenz Larkin may yet yield fruit. The Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran handled his business in the Bellator 193 headliner, as he was awarded a unanimous verdict over Fernando Gonzalez on Friday at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California. Larkin (19-7, 1-2 Bellator) swept the scorecards with 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27 marks from the judges, recording his first win in three starts under the Bellator flag. Gonzalez (27-15, 7-2 Bellator) had no answer for the speed disadvantage at which he found himself. Larkin tore into the Team Quest rep with a variety of strikes, from jumping oblique kicks and standing elbows to simple but effective jab-cross combinations. Gonzalez had issues with output for much of the fight, as Larkin often answered his single punches and kicks with two or three of his own. “The Monsoon” had Gonzalez teetering on the brink of being stopped late in the third round, where he dazed the well-traveled Californian with a right hand and then unloaded with left hands, elbows and a jumping knee along the fence.

Stinton: A Blueprint to Unionize

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * I know it may be hard to believe, but the biggest story in the MMA world had little -- though not nothing -- to do with UFC Fight Night 125 on Saturday in Belem, Brazil. It sounds strange, since apparently the event was important enough to justify a 15-hour run time, or at least that’s how it felt. However, as good as it felt to see Lyoto Machida snap a three-fight losing streak in front of a supportive crowd of countrymen, a more pressing development was going on behind the scenes. It was announced that heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic will fight light heavyweight titleholder Daniel Cormier in the UFC 226 headliner in July. That alone is big news. This is the first champion-versus-champion match in Ultimate Fighting Championship history to take place above welterweight, and it’s a genuinely compelling clash on its own.

UFC Fight Night 125 Bonuses: Shevchenko, Santos, Smith, Alcantara Receive $50K Awards

Valentina Shevchenko , Thiago Santos , Anthony Smith and Iuri Alcantara all received post-fight bonuses for their work at UFC Fight Night 125 in Belem, Brazil on Saturday night. Shevchenko announced herself as a top women’s flyweight contender and earned a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus in the process in a lopsided beatdown of Priscila Cachoeira in the evening’s co-main event. “Bullet” dominated all aspects of the contest en route to securing a rear-naked choke at the 4:25 mark of round two. Santos and Smith captured “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their wild middleweight slugfest. While Smith had his moments, particularly in an entertaining opening stanza, it was Santos who put his stamp on the fight. The Brazilian landed a pair of knockdowns, including a kick to the body in the second frame that sent his opponent to the canvas and set up the finish at the 1:03 mark of the period. Related » UFC Belem By the Numbers Elsewhere, Iuri Alcantara collected a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for his quick technical knockout victory over Joe Soto in a preliminary bantamweight affair.
