Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night 125

Rarely has there been such a glaring and unsettling skill discrepancy in the modern Ultimate Fighting Championship . Former bantamweight title contender Valentina Shevchenko was ruthless and clinical in her debut at 125 pounds, as she annihilated Parana Vale Tudo prospect Priscila Cachoeira in the UFC Fight Night 125 co-main event on Saturday at Guilherme Paraense Arena in Belem, Brazil. Cachoeira tapped to a rear-naked choke 4:25 into the second round, this after being drawn and quartered for the better part of nine minutes. The FightMetric statistics defy belief. Shevchenko connected on 84 percent of the significant strikes she attempted and outlanded the previously unbeaten Brazilian by a startling 230-3 margin in total strikes. It was a flawless performance if there ever was one. Shevchenko did the vast majority of her damage on the ground, where she punished Cachoeira with punches and elbows, one of which drew blood -- and copious amounts of it -- in the first round. In the aftermath of UFC Fight Night “Machida vs.

UFC Fight Night 125: By the Numbers

Lyoto Machida did just enough to send the Brazilian fans home happy. “The Dragon” edged Eryk Anders via split decision in the UFC Fight Night 125 main event in Belem, Brazil, on Saturday, ending a three-fight skid for the former light heavyweight champion. While scorecards in the middleweight bout will certainly be up for debate, there is plenty elsewhere to examine as well. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 125, with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com. “Following notification of his positive test, Wallhead provided USADA with information about a dietary supplement product he was using at the time of the relevant sample collection. Although no prohibited substances were listed on the supplement label, testing conducted on an independently sourced, unopened container of the product by the WADA-accredited laboratory in Salt Lake City, Utah, indicated that it contained ostarine. The presence of an undisclosed prohibited substance in a product is regarded as contamination. Accordingly, the product has since been added to the High Risk List of supplements maintained on USADA’s online dietary supplement safety education and awareness resource – Supplement 411 (www.Supplement411.org).

Sherdog Remembers: ‘The Natural’ vs. ‘The Hammer’

It was the first-ever fight between Ultimate Fighting Championship Hall of Fame inductees inside the Octagon: Randy Couture met Mark Coleman in the UFC 109 main event on Feb. 6, 2010 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, as two MMA pioneers faced off in the modern era. Couture and Coleman were supposed to lock horns at UFC 17 in 1998 before an injury to the former nixed those plans. Coleman later left for Japan, where he won the 2000 Pride Fighting Championships open weight grand prix. After a loss to Fedor Emelianenko at Pride 32 and a two-year layoff, “The Hammer” returned to the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Coleman made his light heavyweight debut at UFC 93, losing to Mauricio Rua by third-round technical knockout in a “Fight of the Night” performance. A three-round unanimous decision over Stephan Bonnar got Coleman on track in his new weight class and set up his historic clash with Couture. Fresh off of a controversial decision against Brandon Vera , Couture proved to be the superior fighter when he duked it out with Coleman.

Stinton: A Blueprint to Unionize

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * I know it may be hard to believe, but the biggest story in the MMA world had little -- though not nothing -- to do with UFC Fight Night 125 on Saturday in Belem, Brazil. It sounds strange, since apparently the event was important enough to justify a 15-hour run time, or at least that’s how it felt. However, as good as it felt to see Lyoto Machida snap a three-fight losing streak in front of a supportive crowd of countrymen, a more pressing development was going on behind the scenes. It was announced that heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic will fight light heavyweight titleholder Daniel Cormier in the UFC 226 headliner in July. That alone is big news. This is the first champion-versus-champion match in Ultimate Fighting Championship history to take place above welterweight, and it’s a genuinely compelling clash on its own.

Max Holloway has confirmed his withdrawal from UFC 222 , and it appears that some type of leg injury is the cause of his injury woes. “I asked the docs if we could cut off my leg then ask the commission if I could fight handicapped,” Holloway wrote on Twitter. “They told me at the end of the day it is what it is… Had dozens of family from Hawaii coming up for this one... 11 Lyoto Machida explains Michael Bisping callout: Fight should've already happened

Machida, 39, entered UFC Fight Night 125 on a three-fight losing skid and with questions about his longevity. “The Dragon” temporarily put off those questions when he edged Anders on the scorecard in his hometown of Belem, and although he entered the fight as an underdog, Machida said he was confident he would rebound.

5 Things You Might Not Know About Yoel Romero

One of the most intimidating physical specimens in the Ultimate Fighting Championship , Yoel Romero has become known for his incredible strength, imposing physique and otherworldly athleticism. Romero was a silver medalist in freestyle wrestling at the 2000 Olympics and has turned himself into a dangerous striker since arriving on the mixed martial arts scene. The 40-year-old has put himself in position to capture the interim middleweight championship when he meets Luke Rockhold in the UFC 221 main event this Saturday in Perth, Australia. Ahead of Romero’s showdown with Rockhold, here are five things you might not know about one of MMA’s most terrifying fighters: 1. He cut his MMA teeth in Europe. Romero’s amateur wrestling pedigree did not net him an instant opportunity with the UFC, as he started his mixed martial arts career on the ground floor. Forced to earn his stripes in Europe before coming to North America, three of his first four bouts were contested in Germany, the other in Poland. Not surprisingly, Romero went 4-0 with four finishes before signed with Strikeforce ahead of his United States debut in 2011.

UFC Bantamweight Carls John de Tomas Accepts 1-Year Suspension for USADA Violation

De Tomas, 21, tested positive for furosemide, stemming from a urine sample he provided during the in-competition period on December 8, 2017, before his bout at the UFC Fight Night event in Fresno, Calif. Furosemide is a Specified Substance in the class of Diuretics and Masking Agents and prohibited at all times under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, which has adopted the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List. De Tomas’ one-year period of ineligibility began on December 29, 2017, the date his provisional suspension was imposed. The athlete’s positive test also falls under the jurisdiction of the California State Athletic Commission, which has also sanctioned De Tomas with a one-year suspension and a $2,500 fine.

Cachoeira Coach: No Athlete Wants Corner to Throw in Towel During Fight

Priscila Cachoeira ’s coach has no regrets when it comes to his fighter’s bout against Valentina Shevchenko this past weekend. Gilliard Alfredo Fagundes , the head trainer at Parana Vale Tudo, was in the corner as Cachoeira was overwhelmed by Shevchenko en route to a second-round submission defeat in the UFC Fight Night 125 co-main event in Belem, Brazil, on Saturday. In the lopsided flyweight bout, Shevchenko held a whopping 230-to-3 advantage in total strikes. While referee Mario Yamasaki initially took the brunt of the criticism for failing to stop the fight sooner, Fagundes also took some heat because he didn’t throw in the towel to save his athlete. As someone who has 18 professional bouts on his record, Fagundes didn’t see that as an option. "I would never throw a towel, no way, I'm a fighter and I know that playing that is something that neither athlete wants,” the coach told Sherdog.com. Fagundes was also present for the Octagon debut of Jessica Andrade , who was outlanded by 100 total strikes in a technical knockout loss to Liz Carmouche at UFC on Fox 8.

18
The Bottom Line: Yoel Romero, the Great ‘What If?’

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Yoel Romero at the age of 40 will seek to become interim Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight champion in the UFC 221 main event on Saturday in Perth, Australia. However, the most notable time-related aspect of Romero’s career is not his age but how long he has been fighting. Romero has only been competing professionally as a fighter for a little over eight years. His 33-year-old opponent, Luke Rockhold , has been fighting longer. That’s because Rockhold first fought professionally at age 22 while Romero did so at 32 -- the same age women’s featherweight champion Cristiane Justino is now. “Cyborg” was a four-year veteran by the time Romero fought for the first time. Romero’s relatively rapid ascent was a necessity given when he started his career; elite fighters who start as late as Romero did are an extreme rarity.

UFC Fight Night 125 Post-Mortem: Hometown Hero

Lyoto Machida on Saturday stepped into the Octagon in his hometown of Belem, Brazil, and did so while in the midst of the first three-fight losing streak of his 15-year career. Stoppage losses to Luke Rockhold , Yoel Romero and Derek Brunson preceded Machida’s UFC Fight Night 125 main event opposite Eryk Anders at Guilherme Paraense Arena. “The Dragon” chopped down Anders with a leg kick in the first round and seemed content to attack the unbeaten prospect’s legs while keeping him glued to the mat in the butt scoot position. Anders eventually returned to his feet but not before significant time had been bled off the clock. From there, Machida employed his familiar counter-based strategy from the outside, allowing the former University of Alabama linebacker to come to him while looking to land a knockout blow. The fight seesawed back and forth across five rounds, with neither man willing to relent. Anders appeared to have a slight edge entering Round 5, but Machida turned up the heat when it mattered most and showed he still had something left at age 39.

Anatomy of a bloodbath: Late stoppage wasn't the only issue with Shevchenko vs. Cachoeira

Cachoeira (8-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) was as good a sacrificial lamb as any. She came in with an unbeaten record, even if it was against lower tier competition, but she had no real chance to do much against a fighter of Shevchenko’s caliber and anybody who saw a minute of her fight footage knew it.

UFC Champ Tyron Woodley: ‘If I Had to Bet the House on It,’ Nate Diaz Will Be Next Opponent

The rumors of a Tyron Woodley vs. Nate Diaz title bout in December quickly fizzled, but the fight is apparently far from dead. In an interview with ESPN.com , the reigning welterweight champion said that the UFC has offered Diaz a title shot at an event this summer. "I think that fight will happen," Woodley told ESPN. "I think it will happen this year. I think it's way more likely than people realize. There are conversations about Nate and I fighting in July. The UFC has offered Nate that fight. They just have to make it worth his while. "I think I'll fight Nate this year, and I think it will be my return to the Octagon. If I had to bet the house on it, that's my next opponent." At the end of last year, Woodley said that a fight with Diaz was in the works for UFC 219 on Dec. 30. UFC President Dana White subsequently denied that there was any possibility of that bout happening, and shortly thereafter, Woodley elected to undergo shoulder surgery . Meanwhile, Diaz recently teased a UFC return in May or June in a social media post.

Priscila Cachoeira refutes criticism, defends coach: 'We're the ones who know my limits'

“Hi, everyone. Just stopping by to say everything is OK. Took me a while to speak because I didn’t have my cell on me and I was at the hospital… So… I apologize to my fans, friends and family, who threw a party to watch my fight. I caught an extremely tough fighter, who I’m a fan of, and on fight time I wasn’t the real ‘Pedrita.’ Those who know me and are around me on my day-to-day, know how I could have performed. And even having injured my knee early in the fight, I went until the end because I don’t know quitting. I will need surgery on my ACL and meniscus. And there are a lot of people talking about how I fought the top one, etc, that my master told me to shut up and blah blah. Let’s go… I will fight any fighter in the world, regardless of her standings. I’d fight Valentina another 10 times without even thinking twice. Those who pick easy battles aren’t true warriors. And the treatment and the intimacy I have with my master… Those on the outside don’t know anything to criticize it. This isn’t master and student. It’s father and daughter. And no one will say how he’s supposed to treat me.

Mario Yamasaki on UFC stoppage controversy: I allowed Priscila Cachoeira 'to be a warrior'

“In the second round, I signaled to ‘Pedrita’ that if she didn’t move I’d stop the bout.” Yamasaki told MMAjunkie through a statement issued by his representative. “Every time I went to stop it, I signaled it to her, and she moved in an attempt to escape the blows. Unfortunately, I also can’t control the number of strikes that are thrown. Again, while she’s looking for a turnaround, she’s in the game. Fighters go through periods of great effort and dedication in order to be there. MMA is a contact sport, and no fighter likes to have the fight interrupted without a chance to reverse the outcome.
