James Gallagher: Carrying the Irish Tricolor
Anthony
Taylor was a relative unknown when he landed in Dublin ahead of
his Bellator 169 meeting with 20-year-old
SBG Ireland prospect James
Gallagher . Although the inexperienced American brought some
interest to the bout by labeling the John
Kavanagh protégé “a little boy,” it was a comment he made at
the event’s pre-fight press conference that really struck a chord
with the Irish masses.
“You’re not even Irish,” Taylor said, firing his words in
Gallagher’s direction before murmurs broke out in the assembly at
the Gibson Hotel. “Why are you talking about being Irish? You’re
British.”
Gallagher’s father was quick to respond from the crowd: “You’re out
of line, Anthony.”
Although he seemed to enjoy the exchange, Muhammed
Lawal gestured for the gathering to calm down after the
comment. Chris
Fields then advised “King Mo” to tell his countryman to quiet
down given the inflammatory nature of his words. Later, on the
advice of A.J. McKee ,
Taylor apologized to Gallagher.

Dana White: Jessica Andrade ‘Absolutely’ Next for Strawweight Champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk
Jessica
Andrade wanted a little more time before challenging reigning
strawweight queen Joanna
Jedrzejczyk . Now “Bate Estaca” believes she is ready for the
division’s best.
Andrade earned her third consecutive dominant triumph since moving
to 115 pounds, overwhelming reigning Invicta FC titlist Angela Hill
with volume and pressure to capture a clear-cut unanimous verdict
in a featured bout at
UFC Fight Night 104 on Saturday in Houston.
While Hill displayed a durable chin and stayed in the fight
throughout the 15-minute affair, she was unable to keep up with the
tenacious Andrade. All told, Andrade outlanded her opponent 131 to
89 in significant strikes, often swarming Hill with punching
flurries against the fence.
“I had a lot of determination and willpower, and that was what led
me through this incredible battle,” Andrade said. “The fact that
Angela could take so many punches was surprising. I wasn’t
expecting that at all. She is a warrior.”
After Andrade submitted Joanne
Calderwood in the opening stanza at UFC 203 last September,
many observers called for the Brazilian to be next in line to face
Jedrzejczyk.

Bellator 176 sends promotion back to Italy on April 8 for MMA/kickboxing event
It’s been less than a year since Bellator’s first international show took place in Turin. Bellator 152 in April 2016 took place at the same venue and put an announced 15,000 people in the seats for a sold-out show. Since then, the promotion has added the likes of London, Dublin, Budapest, Israel and Florence, Italy, to its resume. It also will be heading to Belfast, Northern Ireland, for the first time later this month.

10 February Tussles Worth Watching

The newly forged
Legacy Fighting Alliance organization has started the process
of filling its vacancies. Next up: the featherweight
championship.
Kevin
Aguilar and UFC veteran Damon
Jackson will battle over the inaugural LFA featherweight crown
in the Legacy
Fighting Alliance 4 main event on Feb. 17 at the Horseshoe
Casino and Hotel in Bossier City, Louisiana. Aguilar was the
reigning
Legacy Fighting Championship titleholder at 145 pounds when the
promotion merged with the
Resurrection Fighting Alliance .
Momentum from a three-fight winning streak has propelled Aguilar to
the top of the regional circuit. The 28-year-old has delivered 10
of his 11 professional victories by knockout, technical knockout or
submission. Aguilar last fought at Legacy 57 on July 1, when he
walked away with a five-round split decision over Tony Kelley
at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The Bottom Line: Fool’s Gold
Since the
Ultimate Fighting Championship became the unquestioned top
promotion in mixed martial arts a little over a decade ago, it has
received sporadic criticism over its booking of championships. Fans
and journalists have lamented fighters receiving unearned title
shots, and some feel the overabundance of championships has watered
down the meaning of individual titles; others feel the more
divisions, the better. More recently, there has been backlash
against the preponderance of unnecessary interim titles created
when the regular champion is healthy and ready to defend.
At the heart of the frustration over some of these moves is the
fact that UFC titles do have meaning. They have on balance
been protected well and fans accept them as defining the best
fighters in each division. Fans don’t want the titles to just be
trinkets used as gimmicks to sell fights like they have been for
other combat organizations over the years. Boxing’s sanctioning
bodies make ridiculous, unjustifiable decisions regarding their
titles seemingly every week, but they are greeted with a collective
shrug from boxing fans because they don’t put any real stock in
those once prestigious accessories.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - A Zombie Wins MMA's Super Bowl Weekend
There was a time -- and honestly, a time not that long ago -- when
the
Ultimate Fighting Championship 's Super Bowl weekend cards were
massive festivities, double title headliners and the like. This
year, we did not get anything near that on the paper, but in actual
practice? Well, we saw some surprises
in Houston on Feb. 4 that have real rankings impact.
You know what's more important? “The Korean Zombie” is out of his
grave and back in these rankings.
It has been nearly three and a half years since Chan Sung
Jung lost his UFC featherweight title challenge against
Jose
Aldo , injuring his shoulder and taking time off before being
forced to serve his mandatory South Korean military service. In his
return, ring rust did not even have time to come to the forefront,
as Jung laid waste to perennial top-10 and bubble-list talent
Dennis
Bermudez with a sensational right uppercut in less than three
minutes. With a brilliant win over a quality opponent, “The Korean
Zombie” pops back into our ranks at No. 9.
It was not just the return of an all-time great action fighter,
though.

Ultimate Fighting Championship gold.
The former Strikeforce
champion will try to nail down an elusive title shot in the
Ultimate Fighting Championship at UFC

“Jacare” has rattled off nine wins across his past 10 appearances,
a split decision defeat to Yoel Romero
his only setback. The 37-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt
last competed at UFC 198 on May 14, when he stopped Vitor
Belfort with first-round punches.
In this exclusive interview with Sherdog.com, Souza discusses fight
preparation, his forthcoming battle with Boetsch and his wait for a
crack at UFC gold:
Sherdog.com: How do you prepare for a fight?
Souza: The first thing I do is I make sure that I am happy. If I’m
happy, mentally I am there, both in practice and in the fight; and
I always train very hard with everything I do: striking,
conditioning and, of course, my jiu-jitsu.

Instant Replay Approved As Part Of New MMA Rules In 2017
Due to the complexities involved in the sport of MMA, the referee may only use Instant Replay when he/she feels that a “Fight Ending Sequence” was possibly caused by an illegal action (foul) whether intentional or unintentional. At such a time the referee and only the referee may call for a review of the last moments of the fight. Once reviewing the replay the referee can either confirm or dispel whether a foul was committed that brought about the fight ending sequence and take the appropriate actions from there.

Beating the Odds: UFC Fight Night ‘Bermudez vs. Korean Zombie’
Widespread skepticism mattered little to Felice
Herrig .
“The Ultimate Fighter” Season 20 quarterfinalist embraced her role
as an underdog and upset the previously unbeaten Alexa
Grasso in the
UFC Fight Night 104 co-main event on Saturday at the Toyota
Center in Houston. Herrig entered the cage at +321 odds, per
BetDSI.com, and walked away with 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 marks from
the cageside judges.
To the surprise of many, the Buffalo Grove, Illinois, native
elected to exchange with Grasso (-393) on the feet.
“I didn’t do as much as I wanted to, but I did do what I expected
of myself,” Herrig said. “Everyone thinks of me as a grappler, but
I come from a striking background. Alexa is a tough opponent and
known for her boxing, so I wanted to remind everyone that I’m a
high-level striker, and I chose to stand up and trade with
her.”
According to FightMetric
figures, Grasso landed 20 more significant strikes than the
Jeff
Curran protégé across their three-round encounter. However,
Herrig was more active -- she threw 37 more strikes than the Lobo
Gym prospect -- and executed the only two takedowns of the fight,
securing one in the second round and another in the third.

Matches to Make After UFC Houston
So much for the ring rust argument.
Chan
Sung Jung on Saturday returned to the Ultimate Fighting
Championship for the first time in 1,281 days and took out Dennis
Bermudez with a mean right uppercut and follow-up punches in
the
UFC Fight Night 104 “Korean Zombie vs. Bermudez” main event at
the Toyota Center in Houston. Bermudez succumbed to blows 2:49 into
Round 1, as the Long Island MMA rep suffered his third defeat in
five appearances.
Despite outlanding “The Korean Zombie” 24-19 by FightMetric count,
Bermudez whiffed on all three of his takedown attempts. He
staggered Jung with an overhand right less than a minute into the
fight and swarmed for a potential finish. However, Bermudez’s bid
fell short. Later in the first round, Jung slipped a jab from “The
Ultimate Fighter 14” finalist and fired a perfectly timed and
exquisitely placed uppercut underneath it. Before he realized what
happened, Bermudez was on the floor eating unanswered punches that
prompted referee Herb Dean to
act on his behalf. It marked the ninth first-round stoppage of
Jung’s career and put him right back in the line of contenders at
145 pounds.

The Walkmen: UFC Fight Night ‘Bermudez vs. Korean Zombie’
UFC Fight Night 104 saw the triumphant return of Chan Sung
Jung , as “The Korean Zombie” flattened Dennis
Bermudez in the first round of their headliner at the Toyota
Center in Houston. The event was packed with action and memorable
finishes, with a number of fighters making convincing pitches for
post-fight bonuses. The soundtrack to the show added another layer
of intrigue on the eve of Super Bowl LI.
The Cranberries and their classic 1990s grunge opus “Zombie” brought
Jung to the Octagon for the first time in more than three years.
Meanwhile, DMX’s “Top Shotter (Here
Comes the Boom)” trumpeted Bermudez’s arrival, moments before
he was cut down by an uppercut and follow-up punches.
Other standout tracks included Pat Benatar’s “All Fired Up”

By the Numbers: UFC Houston
“The Korean Zombie” has risen yet again.
Shaking off a three-plus year hiatus, Chan Sung
Jung stepped right back into the featherweight mix with a
first-round knockout of Dennis
Bermudez in the UFC Fight Night 104 headliner in Houston on
Saturday. After getting wobbled in an early exchange, Jung slipped
a Bermudez jab and then floored his foe with a perfectly-placed
uppercut. A few follow-up blows on the ground sealed the victory
2:29 into the opening frame, signaling that Jung is still a force
to be reckoned with at 145 pounds.

bowed out 59 seconds into Round 2, as he was left writhing on the
mat. Replays had members of the audience squirming in their
seats.
Blaydes (7-1, 2-1 UFC) was dominant from start to finish. He
executed repeated takedowns -- three of them of the thunderous
variety -- in the first round, battered Milstead with
ground-and-pound and kept him confined to close-quarters
engagements. Milstead appeared to wince in pain during one of the
takedowns but nevertheless returned for middle stanza. It was a
mistake. Blaydes again closed the distance and swooped in for a
takedown. Milstead’s right knee buckled under the strain, prompting
an immediate stoppage.

Jessica Aguilar Wants Maryna Moroz Fight at UFC 211
Jessica Aguilar doesn't feel she has anything to prove, and there isn't any sign of a chip on her shoulder. Yet, in a way that's very personal to her, the goals once set are very much on the radar, the quest to show herself she has what it takes is the sole objective. That's the only thing that has ever mattered, but now, it matters more than it ever has before. "It's not about proving anything to anyone else," Aguilar told FloCombat in an exclusive interview. "It's about proving it to myself. I hold myself to a high standard and I'm the person I answer to. I ask myself, 'Can I do it?' and it's a mindgame I play with myself. It's not for anyone else. When I do like I've done in the past and accomplished a goal no one thought I had a chance at doing, it's nice to see the faces of who didn't believe in me. They get congratulatory all of a sudden, and for me that's always an added plus. "Sharing my story has also been a great part of this journey. To be sharing my story with other women and know I'm motivating them to do whatever it is they want to do is special. "I've always been an underdog," she added.

Sergio Moraes, Max Griffin to Clash at UFC Fight Night 106 on March 11
A welterweight clash between Sergio

has been added to the
UFC Fight Night 106 lineup, promotion officials recently

UFC Fight Night 106 takes place in Fortaleza, Brazil, on March 11

Belal Muhammad Steps in to Face Randy Brown at UFC 208 in Brooklyn
Randy
Brown will remain on the UFC
208 bill, as Belal
Muhammad has stepped in to replace original Brown foe George
Sullivan on next Saturday’s card.
Promotion officials announced the change on Saturday. Sullivan was
notified of a potential anti-doping violation earlier this week and
was removed from UFC 208 as a result. The event takes place at the
Barclays Center in Brooklyn and is headlined by a bout between
Holly
Holm and Germaine
de Randamie for the inaugural women’s featherweight title.
A former Titan Fighting Championships welterweight titlist,
Muhammad has dropped two of his first three UFC bouts. The Chicago
native last appeared at UFC 205, where he suffered a first-round
knockout loss at the hands of Vicente
Luque .
Brown has won three of his four Octagon appearances and enters the
matchup on the strength of back-to-back triumphs against Brian
Camozzi and Erick
Montano .

Ahead of Anthony Johnson rematch, Daniel Cormier 'loves the doubt' | BJPenn.com
“I love the doubt, man. I love the fact that I get doubt,” Cormier explained. “Jon Anik is my buddy, and Jon is a big, big (betting) lines guy. So every time Anthony and I are supposed to fight, the lines come out, and it’s like we’re dead even. It’s like people don’t know what to make of a fight between Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson, when in reality it should be very easy to know what to make of a fight between me and Anthony Johnson. But everybody seems to question me in regards to fighting that man. And you know, I like the guy. He’s a great guy. I think he’s a nice guy, he’s a gentleman, he’s always nice, he’s always friendly. But in terms of us competitively, in the world I live in, he doesn’t beat me.
“He’ll still be able to fight for about 10 minutes, and then we’ll be good to go,” Cormier added. “There’s a difference in the training styles and the fighting styles of my team and his team. Right? So you saw Michael Johnson really get his hands on Khabib (Nurmagomedov) early, but after a while, man, that grind really starts to wear on you. And if you’re not built for it, you’re just not built for it.
