Yoel Romero Says Middleweight Title Fight vs. Robert Whittaker Set for UFC 225

The middleweight championship clash between Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero appears to have a date and venue. During an appearance on "The JRE MMA Show” with Joe Rogan, Romero revealed that the bout has been booked for UFC 225 at the United Center in Chicago on June 9. The Las Vegas-based promotion has yet to make a formal announcement regarding the matchup, but the fight had been previously reported by both ESPN.com and BJPenn.com . The title tilt is expected to serve as the UFC 225 main event. The card will also see Alistair Overeem meet Curtis Blaydes at heavyweight, while Joseph Benavidez will return to take on Sergio Pettis in a flyweight scrap. Phil Brooks has also been rumored to make his Octagon return at the event, though that has not been confirmed. Whittaker and Romero first fought at UFC 213, with Whittaker claiming the interim 185-pound title with a five-round decision. The Australian was then elevated to undisputed champion after Georges St. Pierre vacated the title. He was supposed to defend the belt against Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 but had to pull out due to injury.

Two bouts have been added to the UFC 224 lineup, as John Lineker will square off against Brian Kelleher at bantamweight, while Thales Leites will meet Jack Hermansson at middleweight in Rio de Janeiro on May 12. Multiple outlets have confirmed the Lineker vs. Kelleher booking following an initial report by Combate . Meanwhile, the promotion officially announced the Leites vs. Hermansson showdown on Monday. UFC 224 takes place at Jeunesse Arena and will feature a women’s bantamweight championship clash between Amanda Nunes and Raquel Pennington . Lineker has won seven of his last eight Octagon appearances, including a unanimous decision triumph over Marlon Vera at UFC Fight Night 119 in his lone bout of 2017. Kelleher, meanwhile, has won three of his four in the promotion and is coming off a three-round verdict over ex-champ Renan Barao at UFC on Fox 28 on Feb. 24. Leites is 2-5 in his last seven and most recently suffered a decision loss to Brad Tavares at UFC 216. Fabricio Werdum Wary of Alexander Volkov’s Dangerous Striking Game

Fabricio Werdum will face off against Alexander Volkov Saturday at UFC Fight Night 127 inside London’s O2 Arena. The former heavyweight champion Werdum (23-1, 1 NC) has won two straight fights inside the Octagon and is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Marcin Tybura back in November. Meanwhile, Volkov (29-6) is riding a five-fight win streak with his last victory coming against Stefan Struve . He dispatched the giant Dutchman by TKO in the third round in September. Werdum spoke with A G Fight about his opponent Volkov and is well aware of the threat the Russian possesses in the striking game (via Bloody Elbow ): “Volkov is a really dangerous guy. He has been showing that not only in the UFC, but for a while now. He was a Bellator MMA champion, if I’m not mistaken. He’s great reach and is really, really tall. He’s a real heavyweight. He has great muay Thai, but lacks ground skills. You can’t compare his stand-up with his grappling. His striking is very refined, so you must be careful. I’ll fight smart, because he’s a good fighter.” Werdum has trained with Volkov in the past although he won’t be basing his game plan solely on what he learnt about the Russian in those weeks they spent together.

Henry Cejudo Believes Demetrious Johnson Could Easily Defeat T.J. Dillashaw

Former flyweight title challenger Henry Cejudo has weighed in with his thoughts on the outcome of a potential superfight between the current Ultimate Fighting Championship 125-pound champion Demetrious Johnson and bantamweight ace T.J. Dillashaw . Cejudo has experienced firsthand just how good Johnson is back at UFC 197 in 2016, when lost via TKO in the first round. Cejudo recently appeared on MMAFighting.com and commented on the bout, believing “Mighty Mouse” would easily win while pointing out the weight loss as being the deciding factor in the fight. “I have Demetrious by a landslide, to be honest with you. I think Demetrious’ speed; he’s intelligent, nothing to take away from T.J. I’ve said it before, I think it’s just a weight issue. I think it’s T.J. getting down those extra 10 pounds and how he recovers the next day. I think that’s the biggest factor in that fight.” Fight fans are eager for “Mighty Mouse” to test himself after he set a UFC record in his last fight against Ray Borg for most title defenses with 11.
