Verhoeven Dominates Brestovac to Retain Heavyweight Title in Glory 28 Main Event

Rico Verhoeven has become a riddle that no current heavyweights can solve as Croatian Mladen Brestovac was the latest challenger who was perplexed from start to finish. Verhoeven dominated the larger, more powerful man in the main event of Glory 28 inside the Accor Hotels Arena in Paris, France, winning a lopsided unanimous decision to retain his Glory heavyweight championship. Brestovac (49-11-1, 32 KOs) tagged the champ several times but none of his strikes were clean enough to neutralize the combat. Verhoeven moved in and out and side-to-side as he peppered his challenger with an array of kick and punches to the head and body, keeping the Croat out of rhythm all fight long. The Dutch fighter rocked his challenger a few times with stinging rights and left upstairs, but Brestovac was never in any serious peril to the point of being taken out. There weren’t any knockdowns in the contest, but there was no question as to who the superior combatant was. Verhoeven (48-10, 12 KOs) wasn’t overly enthusiastic about his dominant victory afterward, but he was happy that he retained his title with the win.

Opinion: Requiem for a Non-Needle Mover

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Combat sports are built on the Next Big Thing. Newness captures the imagination and runs with it. Veterans exist to enforce reality, to catch up to imagination and ruin it with lessons in humility, sometimes reminding us that the Next Big Thing has been here for years. That’s the story of UFC 196 , a shotgun promotion featuring a welterweight attraction between Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight titleholder Conor McGregor and his handpicked opponent, perennial lightweight contender and former title challenger Nate Diaz . Inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, fans witnessed Diaz’s second-round rear-naked choke subject McGregor to his first loss in eight Octagon appearances. The short-lived but bloody affair did much to reset context. Diaz definitively bested McGregor, who had been preparing for 25 minutes against lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos .

World Series of Fighting 29 Results: Play-by-Play & Round-by-Round Scoring

Josh Cavan vs. Kris Hocum Round 1 Hocum steps forward with a few inside leg kicks but is soon hustled against the cage by Cavan with an underhook. Hocum reverses and steps out to the center of the cage, where he throws a kick that’s caught. As Cavan holds his leg, Hocum swipes a right hand across his opponent’s face. A few more punches follow, but the next time Hocum throws a kick, it’s snatches up by Cavan for another clinch. Cavan breaks off with a punch after a few seconds, and now it’s Hocum walking forward to land a leg kick-right hook combo. Cavan tries to clinch on the fence again and has his head pulled down by Hocum with the Thai plum. Hocum scores with a pair of knees before Cavan breaks the grip and shoves him against the wall. Referee Tim Mills is fast to separate the welterweights, but soon enough it’s Cavan clinching up again. Hocum gets through with a knee to the body as he’s hugged against the cage, then he pushes Cavan away. Cavan charges in just before the bell, clipping Hocum with a few wild punches but eating an uppercut in return. Sherdog Scores Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Hocum Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Hocum Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Hocum Round 2 Cavan tries to step inside with a reaching punch and gets caught with a left hook around the outside.

Vakhitov Dethrones Cavalari in Glory 28 Super Fight Series Headliner

When the two light heavyweights met last year at Glory 20 in Dubai, Brazilian Saulo Cavalari got the best of Artem Vakhitov. After licking his wounds and going back to the drawing board, the Russian altered his approach and became a much better all-around fighter. On Saturday in the main event of the Glory 28 Super Fight Series undercard, he proved that by upending Cavalari and taking the defending champion’s title. Vakhitov (16-5, 6 KOs) used a nearly flawless gameplan to pick the powerful Cavalari apart. He stung the champ with punches to the head and ripped his body with vicious hooks. If that wasn’t enough, the Russian busted up his foe’s legs with nasty low kicks, negating much of the Brazilian’s offense. Vakhitov rocked Cavalari with flurry of shots to the body in the first and then wobbled the titleholder with a scorching right-left to the head, but he was unable to finish him off. Cavalari never stopped trying to win but by the end of the fight, he was exhausted and badly hobbled, unable to do anything to pull off the come-from-behind victory.

Frank Mir: 5 Defining Moments

Whenever he leaves the cage for the final time, Frank Mir will do so as one of the most successful heavyweights in Ultimate Fighting Championship history. His journey has taken him to the highest highs and the lowest lows, as Mir fought for a piece of the heavyweight title on five different occasions and established himself as one of the most feared submission artists to ever compete in the division. The 36-year-old Las Vegas native has won more UFC fights (16), made more appearances (26) and delivered more finishes (13) than any other heavyweight to set foot inside the Octagon. His list of victims includes Roberto Traven , Pete Williams , David “Tank” Abbott , Cheick Kongo , Mirko Filipovic and Todd Duffee . Mir stacks up statistically, as well. According to FightMetric data, he ranks first on the all-time list among UFC heavyweights in submission attempts (21), second in submission average per 15 minutes (2.1), fifth in knockdowns (eight), fifth in takedowns (21), seventh in takedown accuracy (42.9 percent) and ninth in total strikes (591).

Opinion: Do You Want to Be an F’n Promoter?

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Unless you’re Conor McGregor , Holly Holm or an immediate ally to either of the recently deposed champions, UFC 196 was a rousing success. UFC President Dana White should be included in that joyed bunch, but instead, it’s just the opposite, with White taking most of the week to grouse like a jilted lover. Do you want to be an f’n promoter? Here’s the deal: I’m sympathetic to the fact that the UFC’s hottest star was choked out by an antisocial albeit thrilling cult hero, as well as the fact that Holm losing to Miesha Tate alters the narrative of a Holm- Ronda Rousey rematch. In reality, those sweating these outcomes like catastrophes are playing themselves, focusing on marginal loss over massive gain, White included. Let’s consider each of these outcomes and the associated handwringing into which the UFC’s figurehead has fully played.

Bas Rutten MMA Intrigue The greatest martial artist on the planet

Randleman took Rutten down early and punished the Dutchman from top position, opening up a cut on Rutten’s face. After Big John McCarthy stood the fight up again to examine and clean Rutten’s cut, Bas landed a devastating liver shot, his trademark upon recommencing that slowed Randleman down for the rest of the fight. Despite ‘The Monster’ spending much of the rest of normal time on top, Bas’ activity from the bottom allowed the fight to go to overtime. Two three-minute overtime rounds followed much of the same pattern, but eventually Rutten would earn a decision victory, in the days prior to the 10-point-must system. Whilst Randleman maintained top position throughout the fight, his lack of interest in improving position convinced two of the three judges (including Dan Miragliotta ) to give the fight to Rutten.

Opinion: The Slippery Nature of MMA Greatness

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Greatness in mixed martial arts is an oft-discussed and ill-defined phenomenon. There are moments of greatness, when a single move is so spectacular and dynamic that it transcends its own context: Think the “Showtime Kick,” the “Randleplex” or simply YouTube an Anderson Silva highlight video. Then there are great fights: gutsy, never-back-down brawls, come-from-behind wins, shocking upsets and the like. If you’re spending your Monday reading MMA opinion articles, you probably don’t need too many examples; watch this sport long enough and you’ll develop a shortlist of great fights without conscious effort in the same way you involuntarily breathe in your sleep. Yet what is probably the most hotly debated and feverishly coveted claim to greatness is consideration as a great fighter. This usually requires a long-term aggregate of both of the former criterion, a rare feat that is slowly developed, hastily misapplied and readily dismissed.

Opinion: Boxing’s Terrible Start to 2016

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. It’s no secret that boxing has had a terrible start to 2016; and with the Ultimate Fighting Championship continuing to put on fights that interest the public, boxing is going to need to do something to prevent from hemorrhaging fans who are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of competitive showdowns. Ever since Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao destroyed all records with their underwhelming bout in May, the sport has been scratching and clawing to find its next big star and deliver compelling fights that will keep the fans interested. Thus far, we’ve seen the likes of Gennady “GGG” Golovkin , Saul “Canelo” Alvarez , Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev , Roman Gonzalez, Terence Crawford and Deontay Wilder rise in an attempt to become boxing’s Next Big Thing. However, unlike the UFC, boxing has struggled mightily to put its top names in fights about which the general public cares.

Justin Gaethje Leg Kicks Chop Down Brian Foster in WSOF 29 Main Event

Brian Foster will not have pleasant memories of his encounter with Justin Gaethje . Gaethje kept his perfect professional record intact and retained the World Series of Fighting lightweight championship, as he cut down Foster with first-round leg kicks in the WSOF 29 headliner on Saturday at the Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley, Colorado. Foster (25-9) succumbed to kicks 1:43 into round one. As many anticipated, it was fun while it lasted. Both men swung for the fences, and Gaethje briefly floored the challenger with a left hook. Foster returned to his feet and was met with a series of kicks to the outside of his left knee, the last of which buckled the 31-year-old and dropped him to the mat in visible pain. Gaethje (15-0) then scaled the cage and punctuated his latest conquest with one of his trademark backflips. In the heavyweight co-main event, former Resurrection Fighting Alliance champion Josh Copeland made a successful promotional debut, as he left the cage with a unanimous decision over Mike Hayes . All three cageside judges scored it the same: 30-27 for Copeland (12-3).

Jake Shields Bet on Nate Diaz to Defeat ‘Overhyped’ Conor McGregor at UFC 196

Even though Nate Diaz was partying in Mexico not long before he got the call to fill in for Rafael dos Anjos against Conor McGregor at UFC 196 , Jake Shields was more than confident enough to invest in his longtime training partner. “I absolutely thought Nate was going to win. I went and bet money on him,” Shields said during a recent appearance on the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show . “There were things I was worried about. Like the fact that Nate was in Cabo right before the fight. Him and [ Gilbert Melendez ] were out in Cabo, drinking, eating, you know, having fun and partying, not training, so that was in the back of my head. “Nate’s a cardio freak, so I was like, ‘Well hopefully that doesn’t hurt him.’ I definitely thought Nate was gonna win. I think Conor’s a great fighter, but I think he got a little overhyped.” Fighting at 170 pounds for the first time in his career, McGregor came up short against Diaz -- and made Shields a little bit of cash in the process. In their theories on heredity and evolution, both Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin explicitly stated that characteristics and traits that parents acquire during their lifetime through interaction with the environment could be passed on to their offspring. It was not until the neo-Darwinist "Synthetic Theory of Evolution," which combines the theories of natural selection by Darwin and of genetics by Gregor Mendel, that the inheritance of acquired traits was rejected.
