Nate Diaz Gives Conor McGregor a ‘Puncher’s Chance’ in Boxing Match vs. Floyd Mayweather

Former opponent Nate Diaz isn’t completely discounting Conor McGregor ’s chances in a hypothetical boxing match against retired champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. “I think it is a big publicity stunt, but my take on a boxing match between the two...I think McGregor has got a good chance to make something happen in two or three rounds,” Diaz told CSN Sports . “If anything, two or three rounds. But he’s got an amateur style where he’s only got good movement, good punches for six to eight minutes and I think that’s too amateur for Mayweather.” Diaz knows the type of power McGregor possesses after facing the Irishman in the Octagon twice in 2016. In their first meeting at UFC 196, McGregor hunted for the early knockout with uppercuts and left hands, leaving himself spent by round two. Diaz responded by hurting the SBG Ireland representative with punches of his own before submitting his foe with a rear-naked choke 4:12 into round two. In the rematch at UFC 202, McGregor got his revenge. While he managed to floor Diaz three times within two rounds, his pace slowed and Diaz nearly seized the momentum and ended the fight.

James Vick gets another home Texas fight, meets Marco Polo Reyes at UFC 211

Vick, a native of a small town west of Dallas, got back in the win column five weeks ago when he submitted Abel Trujillo with a third-round D’Arce choke at UFC Fight Night 104 in Houston, also in front of his home Texas fans. That got him the bounce-back from the first loss of his pro career at UFC 199, where Beneil Dariush knocked him out in the first round to snap his perfect 9-0 start.

Opinion: A Win Just Ain't Worth What It Used To Be

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Mixed martial arts is a sport that for years, prior to “The Ultimate Fighter” and pay-per-views that do one million buys, was cultivated and developed through its online presence. Back when the UFC was off widespread PPV and went dark, when keeping up with Pride Fighting Championships meant staying up for some English teacher in Japan to do a questionable play-by-play on a forum, when tape trading was a legitimate hobby and not a bizarre, antiquated pastime, MMA was incubated by the Internet and flourished. Before crying Michael Jordan faces and other widespread sports memes, MMA had its own in-jokes and punchlines: Rickson by armbar, Yoshihiro Takayama as “The Hawtness” and, of course, “My pic with Matt Hughes .” My point: Owing to the crucial nature of its online past and present, MMA was long ahead of the curve on this style of humor.

Ray Rodriguez Victorious, Mackenzie Dern Moves to 3-0 at Legacy Fighting Alliance 6

Ray Rodriguez has turned around his career. The featherweight headlined Legacy Fighting Alliance 6 on Friday at Cowboys Dancehall in San Antonio and recorded his seventh straight win with a split decision over Rivaldo Junior . Scores were 29-28 and 30-27 for Rodriguez, 30-27 for Junior. Rodriguez pressed the action throughout against the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. Junior locked in a tight arm-triangle choke and an even deeper guillotine, but “The Judge” fought out of both attempts. The difference in the fight was Rodriguez’s superior cardio, as he routinely beat the Brazilian to the punch and controlled the pace. In the co-feature, former University of Alabama linebacker Eryk Anders made quick work of Jon Kirk , as he continues to improve and rise in the middleweight rankings. Anders patiently waited for an opening and then quickly took down Kirk with a single-leg. From there, it was only a matter of time before it was over. “Frankenstein” unloaded with left hands, and when Kirk rolled over in a bid to escape, Anders simply poured on the punishment. The mugging ended at 1:35 of the first round.

The Chip on Brendan Loughnane’s Shoulder

The last time a major mixed martial arts event came to the Manchester Arena was UFC 204, and two of the most-talked-about fighters in England at the time, Paddy Pimblett and Brendan Loughnane, were not on the card. A potential meeting between the two supposedly Ultimate Fighting Championship -bound fighters sent social media threads into convulsions last autumn, but the clash never came to fruition. While Pimblett had already earned ovations in front of his home crowd under the Cage Warriors Fighting Championship banner in Liverpool, England, Manchester’s Loughnane felt more of a snub, with UFC 204 taking place in his backyard. “The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes” alum on Saturday will get his chance to walk out at the Manchester Arena when he meets Mike Wilkinson in a rematch at Absolute Championship Berkut 54. A controversial loss to Wilkinson at UFC on FX 6 in 2012 sent Loughnane back to the regional scene to rebuild and cost him a spot on the UFC roster. He put together a five-fight winning streak and built enough momentum to challenge French prospect Tom Duquesnoy for the British Association of Mixed Martial Arts featherweight championship in September 2015.

Frankie Edgar to Face Yair Rodriguez at UFC 211 in Dallas

Mexican prospect Yair Rodriguez will attempt to take the next step in his burgeoning career when he locks horns with former lightweight king Frankie Edgar at UFC 211 . The Las Vegas-based promotion announced the pairing on Thursday. UFC 211 takes place at American Airlines Arena in Dallas on May 13 and is headlined by a heavyweight championship clash between Stipe Miocic and Junior dos Santos . After a successful run at 155 pounds, Edgar moved to featherweight in 2013, losing to champion Jose Aldo in his first bout in the new weight class at UFC 156. Since then, “The Answer” has won six of seven in the Octagon, with his only defeat coming to Aldo in an interim 145-pound title bout at UFC 200. One of the sport’s top young talents, Rodriguez will enter the matchup with Edgar on an eight-fight winning streak, a run that includes six Octagon appearances. In his last outing, “Pantera” stopped B.J. Penn via technical knockout 24 seconds into the second round of the UFC Fight Night 103 headliner.

Johnny Eduardo vs. Matthew Lopez, Two Other Bouts Booked for UFC 212

A trio of bouts, including a bantamweight clash between Johnny Eduardo and Matthew Lopez , have been confirmed for UFC 212 . In addition to Eduardo-Lopez, the Las Vegas-based promotion also announced a middleweight clash between Eric Spicely and Antonio Carlos Jr. and a flyweight tilt pitting Deiveson Alcantara Figueiredo against Marco Beltran . UFC 212 takes place at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro on June 3 and is headlined by a featherweight championship bout between Jose Aldo and Max Holloway . Eduardo has won three of his last four bouts, including a second-round technical knockout victory over Manny Gamburyan at UFC Fight Night 100 on Nov. 19. Lopez, meanwhile, picked up his first promotional triumph at UFC 206 when he took a unanimous decision over Mitch Gagnon . After losing his UFC debut, Spicely has scored back-to-back submission victories over Thiago Santos and Alessio Di Chirico . Carlos Jr. also enters the matchup on a two-fight winning streak, with victories over Marvin Vettori and Leonardo Guimaraes .

Two-Time Olympic Gold Medalist Claressa Shields Stops Szilvia Szabados on Showtime

Claressa Shields made history last summer, when she became the first American to capture gold medals in boxing in back-to-back Olympics. She headlined a Showtime boxing event on Friday, marking the first time a women’s bout had ever shouldered a premium network broadcast. Shields aimed for a knockout and made good on her promise. Shields was all over Szilvia Szabados from the start, as she swarmed her with an endless cascade of punches. Szabados tried to create space, but Shields landed nearly half of everything she threw, rattling the Hungarian’s head back and forth and side to side like a Bobblehead doll. Szabados (15-9, 6 KOs) hung tough as long as she could, but Shields eventually forced referee Harvey Dock to intervene. The end came at 1:30 of the fourth round, where Shields slammed a left hook into Szabados’ jaw and improved to 2-0 with her first pro knockout in front of hundreds of her hometown fans in Detroit. Her win capped off a solid night in the latest “ShoBox: The New Generation” installment and brought with it the vacant NABF female middleweight title. Meanwhile, Nikolay Potapov was just a pinch better than fellow bantamweight Antonio Nieves in the co-feature, winning a split decision over 10 hard-fought rounds.

HBO Boxing Weigh-in Results: David Lemieux, Curtis Stevens on Target

#LemieuxStevens face off after they both weigh in. Whos excited for this fight? #boxing pic.twitter.com/Mru8peyMqp — GoldenBoyPromotions (@GoldenBoyBoxing) March 10, 2017 HBO Boxing is set to invade the Events Center at Turning Stone Resort and Casino on Saturday night once again as two premier middleweights will take center stage. Former IBF 160-pound titlist David Lemieux will lock horns with Curtis Stevens in the main event and at Friday’s weigh-ins, both fighters were on point. Stevens (29-5, 21 KOs), who came up short in his first and thus far only bid for a for world title when he was stopped after the eighth round against Gennady Golovkin three years ago, knows a win is crucial for his career. The New York native looked strong on the scale and came in officially at 158.25 pounds. Lemieux (36-3, 32 KOs) has won two straight bouts since losing his title, also to Golovkin, in October 2015. The Montreal native is desperate to back into title contention and, like his foe, came in right on the money. Lemieux weighed in at 159 pounds, giving their featured fight the green light.

Veteran Vitor Belfort looks to put young gun Kelvin Gastelum in his place

This shorter stature allows for a more powerful frame and with him no longer having to worry about making the welterweight limit, I feel we will see his true potential come fight time. There is no doubt that he has everything to gain in this bout and a loss to a great like Belfort wouldn’t be a huge setback at this point in time. Belfort on the other hand, will be further derailed by a loss to a young prospect and climbing his way back into title talks from outside the top 10 may be too much at this advanced stage in his athletic career. For Belfort to keep the dream of being a champion again alive, he has to win this bout, and many will say that it has to be impressive with the division being deeper than ever before.

Mackenzie Dern: Not the ‘Next Ronda Rousey’

Mackenzie Dern was labeled the “Next Ronda Rousey ” as soon as the jiu-jitsu starlet declared her plans to transition to mixed martial arts in October 2015. Just two fights into her professional career, the black belt believes a victory over former Golden Gloves champion Katherine Roy at Legacy Fighting Alliance 6 on Friday in San Antonio could land her an Ultimate Fighting Championship contract. “I think so, maybe,” Dern told Sherdog.com. “There’s a good chance that this could be my last fight before [the] UFC.” Dern gathered significant momentum when she showcased her amazing skills in a first-round submission of Montana Stewart in October. The rare “chokoplata” finish paid homage to Masakazu Imanari and sent her hype train into overdrive, but she claims to be unhindered by the expectations that have resulted from early success. “I think I had more attention going into my first fight than Ronda Rousey did,” she said. “Even when she went pro, nobody really took her seriously until they started to realize that she was submitting her opponents in every single fight.

UFC Fight Night 108 Update: Joe Lauzon, Steven Ray to Clash in Nashville

A lightweight duel pitting Joe Lauzon against Steven Ray is set for UFC Fight Night 108 in Nashville. Promotion officials recently announced the contest. UFC Fight Night 108 takes place at Bridgestone Arena and is headlined by a featherweight bout between Cub Swanson and Artem Lobov . The evening’s main card will be televised on Fox Sports 1. The 33-year-old Lauzon was victorious in two of his three Octagon appearances in 2016, scoring a first-round stoppage of Diego Sanchez at UFC 200 and taking a split decision over Marcin Held at UFC Fight Night 103. In between, the Massachusetts native dropped a split verdict to Jim Miller at UFC on Fox 21. Ray is 4-1 during his promotional tenure thus far. Most recently, “Braveheart” earned a split-decision victory against Ross Pearson at UFC Fight Night 99 on Nov. 19. The Cage Warriors Fighting Championship veteran is 20-6 as a professional overall.

10 March Tussles Worth Watching

In an effort to bring more attention to the global stage of mixed martial arts, this list does not focus on major North American-based promotions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Bellator MMA and the World Series of Fighting. *** The world’s foremost women’s atomweight has decided to hunt bigger game. The reigning Invicta Fighting Championships titleholder at 105 pounds, Ayaka Hamasaki will move to the strawweight division to confront Livia Renata Souza in the Invicta 22 co-headliner on March 25 at the Scottish Rite Temple in Kansas City, Missouri. Their three-round clash helps to anchor an event that will stream in its entirety to UFC Fight Pass. Hamasaki, 34, has rattled off five consecutive victories since she succumbed to punches from Claudia Gadelha a little less than four years ago. It remains the only blemish on her otherwise pristine resume. Hamasaki captured the Invicta atomweight championship in a split decision over Herica Tiburcio in July 2015 and has successfully defended it twice, submitting Amber Brown with a third-round armbar before forcing a second-round doctor stoppage against Jinh Yu Frey .

She would proceed to submit Motana Stewart in July with a wild rear naked choke in the first round. As she prepares for Roy in just a couple weeks, Dern still has one eye on the Ultimate Fighting Championship:

Opinion: Spending Wisely?

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * After missing out on the biggest fight of his career this past weekend when opponent Khabib Nurmagomedov failed to weigh in, Tony Ferguson was dealing with the news surprisingly well. He even made a public statement imploring his fans to still buy the UFC 209 pay-per-view even though “the people’s main event” was cancelled. Ferguson came off as a professional who made weight, a company man, and someone who was being taken care of. Then he found out he wasn’t making his show money for the cancelled fight . As much as everyone keeps talking about how the Ultimate Fighting Championship is seemingly nickle-and-diming fighters at a new level since the promotion was purchased by WME-IMG, it doesn’t always seem like a lot of mixed martial arts fans understand exactly what a cluster of a situation this is. With $1.8 billion of the $4 billion purchase price coming by way of debt financing, it’s not just the purchase price that WME has to make back.
