Marc Diakiese’s Obligatory Change

Marc Diakiese in January had endured enough of the four-hour round trip required to get him to various training obligations in Doncaster, Leeds, Mansfield and Sheffield in his native England. After back-to-back highlight-reel knockouts in the British Association of Mixed Martial Arts led to his being signed by the Ultimate Fighting Championship , the undefeated prospect was hailed as a potential future titleholder. “Bonecrusher” overcame a slow start in his Octagon debut before adding to his streak of finishes at the expense of Lukasz Sajewski at UFC 204 on Oct. 8 in Manchester, England. Diakiese followed it with a unanimous decision over Frankie Perez at UFC Fight Night 102 in December, but he was far from satisfied when he watched his performance. A month later, the 23-year-old walked through the doors at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida, for the first time. “Going into the fight I was classed as one of the biggest prospects in the sport, but when I looked back at the footage, it wasn’t me,” Diakiese told Sherdog.

MMA’s Greats of the States | South Carolina: Stephen Thompson

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. *** Stephen Thompson has established himself as one of the premier competitors in the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s deep welterweight class. The Simpsonville, South Carolina, native has twice tried and failed to unseat champion Tyron Woodley at 170 pounds but nevertheless remains part of the division’s upper tier. Thompson started his formal martial arts training in Kempo karate at the age of 3 before gravitating to other disciplines.

The Bottom Line: Moving Up Isn’t So Hard to Do

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * The Ultimate Fighting Championship has for years made a concerted effort to try to direct its fighters towards their perceived optimal weight classes. That has usually meant moving them towards a lower division. Frankie Edgar was hugely successful at 155 pounds, but all it took was a pair of extremely close decisions for the lightweight title to justify a permanent move to featherweight. The flyweight division exists almost entirely as a showcase for fighters who have proven perfectly adept at bantamweight but may be a little better suited fighting at a slightly smaller weight. Kelvin Gastelum was given chance after chance to fight at welterweight, even as he missed weight three times in six fights ( online betting ). UFC fights over the past decade have consistently been sold based on intrigue surrounding a move up or down in weight class.

Sergiy Derevyanchenko Knocks Out Kemahl Russell in PBC on FS1 Main Event

“The Technician” carves up another one! Unbeaten middleweight Sergiy Derevyanchenko improves to 10-0 with a 5th RD TKO of Kemahl Russell. — PBC (@premierboxing) March 15, 2017 Middleweight contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko was impressive once again in his blossoming young career as he took out Kemahl Russell in the fifth round Tuesday night. The battle highlighted the latest PBC on FS1’s “Toe-To-Toe Tuesdays” card, which took place down in Tunica, Miss., at Fitzgerald’s Tunica Casino and Hotel. A Russian-born Brooklyn resident, Derevyanchenko was much shorter against the previously-unbeaten Russell coming in and he had trouble getting in on the inside early. Russell used his jab well for the first three rounds, but Derevyanchenko eventually figured out the distance and forced the American into ill-advised brawls. Derevyanchenko (10-0, 8 KOs) began busting up his foe to the body and head and when a laser of a right to the head rocked Russell early in the fifth, the end was in sight. Derevyanchenko pounced all over his stumbling adversary and unloaded a barrage of punches from all angles and when Russell (10-1, 8 KOs) was unable to properly defend himself, veteran referee Bill Clancy intervened, ending the main event at the 1:08 mark of the round.

Conflicting Reports Emerge Regarding Potential Mayweather-McGregor Target Date

Floyd Mayweather Jr. officially ended his retirement this past weekend to set his sights on Conor McGregor . That much is certain. Depending on the source, that superfight is either imminent or still a distant speck on the horizon. According to a recent report from , the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas put June 10 on hold for a potential boxing match between Mayweather and McGregor. That date would seem to align with the recent statement from Mayweather, who challenged the UFC lightweight champion to a fight in June. “I don’t want to hear no more excuses about the money, about the UFC,” Mayweather said. “Sign the paper with the UFC so you can fight me in June. Simple and plain, let’s fight in June.” While the June 10 reservation of the T-Mobile Arena doesn’t guarantee a Mayweather-McGregor showdown by any means, it would seem to be a positive step in that direction. However, UFC President Dana White shot down the report that the fight was closer to becoming a reality. White, who claimed to have offered Mayweather and McGregor $25 million apiece earlier this year, told TMZ Sports that the bout is “nowhere near being done” and that “there is no target date whatsoever.

Opinion: Kelvin Gastelum’s View from the Fence

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Last week marked the 20th anniversary of the death of Christopher Wallace, aka Biggie, aka The Notorious B.I.G., aka one of the most era-defining artists of hip-hop ever. His style continues to be emulated and imitated, and his lyrics are among the most commonly referenced by other MCs to date. Among the more frequent homages to his work is citing one of his biggest hits “Mo Money Mo Problems,” a track about the proportional relationship between having a lot of money and having a lot of problems. At the time it was recorded, platinum-selling Biggie -- along with labelmate Ma$e and hitmaker extraordinaire Puff Daddy, who were also on the track -- knew the ills of fame and money all too well. Celebrity makes it hard to live a normal life, compromising everyday luxuries like being able to walk freely in public. Wealth breeds mistrust.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Thrones Are Safe, Back Doors Are Open

Is Kelvin Gastelum a welterweight? A middleweight? Is anyone even sure at this point? What we can tell you is that courtesy of his second consecutive bout at middleweight -- his second consecutive brutal knockout, no less -- the 25-year-old “Ultimate Fighter” winner has exited the welterweight rankings and entered our 185-pound top 10. For three years, Gastelum has been an uneasy fixture in our welterweight ranks, given his history of missing the 170-pound mark on the scales. The Arizona native has repeatedly said he wants to return to the welterweight division, yet his last two bookings have resulted in blowout wins at 185 pounds, as Gastelum retired sturdy veteran Tim Kennedy with a third-round knockout in December and then smashed Vitor Belfort in Fortaleza, Brazil, on March 11. As a result, our previously seventh-ranked welterweight is now our No. 9 middleweight. Another fighter with past issues on the scale has made a major move in this update, too. On the undercard of Belfort-Gastelum, 23-year-old Ray Borg earned the biggest win of his career and broke into the flyweight elite, taking a unanimous decision over perennial divisional standout Jussier da Silva .

Beating the Odds: UFC Fight Night ‘Belfort vs. Gastelum’

Joe Soto finally appears to have some job security. The former Bellator MMA and Tachi Palace Fights champion posted his third straight victory under the Ultimate Fighting Championship flag, as he captured a unanimous decision from Rani Yahya at UFC Fight Night “Belfort vs. Gastelum” on Saturday in Fortaleza, Brazil. That he swept the scorecards with 29-28, 29-27 and 29-27 marks from the judges as an underdog -- he was listed at +190, according to -- made it even sweeter. Yahya (-235) was hyperactive with his standup, and though he dictated the majority of the action in Round 1 with knees, punches and kicks, his overzealous output proved too great a burden for the 2007 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist to carry. Soto withstood a second-round clash of heads that resulted in a gnarly gash to his scalp and turned the battle into a bloodbath. Yahya tired to the point of exhaustion over the final 10 minutes, allowing the Californian to seize control with an effective sprawl and damaging ground-and-pound.

Demetrious Johnson: People misunderstand Tyron Woodley when he talks about racism |

“I don’t want to say it’s an issue,” The flyweight champ said of racism in MMA. “Because obviously I’ve been promoted very well as the flyweight champion. But can I say that people might feel there is? Yeah, probably people feel it. But I don’t think [UFC president] Dana White has ever been like, ‘I’m not gonna look at that [expletive], he’s black. Get somebody else in front of me.’ I don’t think Dana White is doing that. But I’m saying if people feel that way, it’s possible that some people feel that way. That’s just how it is.”

UFC Lightweight James Krause Shows Off Nasty Scar on Leg From Staph Infection

James Krause hasn’t been in the Octagon since February 2016, but there’s a good reason for his absence. The UFC lightweight recently posted post-surgery pictures of a staph infection on his leg. Krause revealed on Twitter that it was his third staph infection in the past 10 years. 3rd time in 10 years having staph and the earliest I've caught it. 3 surgeries and almost 2 weeks later I'm glad to finally be home! — James Krause (@TheJamesKrause) March 14, 2017 “Going home today! 10 days in the hospital, 3 (2.5 ish) surgeries, but the infection is gone and I’m feeling better,” Krause wrote on Instagram . “Will be on crutches and will still have a PICC line for a couple weeks but all is improving!” Krause last appeared at UFC Fight Night 83 on Feb. 21, 2016, when he took a unanimous decision triumph over Shane Campbell . The 30-year-old Missouri native owns a 4-3 mark in the Las Vegas-based promotion that also includes victories over Daron Cruickshank , Jamie Varner and Sam Stout . Krause is 23-7 over the course of a pro career that began in 2007.

Preview: UFC Fight Night ‘Manuwa vs. Anderson’ - Manuwa vs. Anderson

The light heavyweight division takes center stage, as the Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday returns to London with UFC Fight Night 107 and features a main event pitting knockout artist Jimi Manuwa against “The Ultimate Fighter 19” winner Corey Anderson . Meanwhile, Gunnar Nelson squares off with Alan Jouban in the three-round co-headliner at 170 pounds. The rest of the four-fight main draw sees the retiring American Top Team standout Brad Pickett take on Marlon Vera in a bantamweight clash and Arnold Allen collide with Makwan Amirkhani in a featherweight tilt. Let us take a closer look at each UFC Fight Night “Manuwa vs. Anderson” matchup, with analysis and picks: Light Heavyweights Jimi Manuwa (16-2) vs. Corey Anderson (9-2) THE MATCHUP: At 37, Manuwa is almost certainly not going to make his way to the title. His brief stint as fringe contender appears to be done, but he may still be in the best form of his career. Now positioned as a gatekeeper, Manuwa looks to interrupt the ascent of Anderson, a 27-year-old prospect who won Season 19 of “The Ultimate Fighter.
