Justin Gaethje Suspended Indefinitely for Unsportsmanlike Conduct at WSOF 29

World Series of Fighting lightweight champion Justin Gaethje kept on rolling in the main event of WSOF 29 on Saturday, but his post-fight celebration did have some consequences. The commission released a list of suspensions from the event to on Tuesday. Gaethje retained his WSOF lightweight crown by stopping Foster via leg kicks 1:43 into the opening round of their clash at the Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley, Colo. Gaethje then punctuated his triumph with a backflip off the cage. According to the , Gaethje was warned by the Colorado commission not to execute his trademark celebration prior to the event. Opinion: Ronda Rousey’s Next Move

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. By now, everyone has seen the video of Ronda Rousey biting into an apple, which means that she is one step closer to getting back into the Octagon. Everyone has also heard that UFC President Dana White has essentially offered Rousey the fight against newly minted UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate . But, for the love of the MMA, I hope that Rousey reconsiders and does not take what could be perceived as the easy way out. Although White stated prior to UFC 196 that Rousey would face the winner of Tate’s fight with Holly Holm , it’s not like those words are carved in stone. As a matter of fact, there have been many occasions on which White has said one thing and done another. Just ask Tate about her title opportunity ending up in the hands of Holm. Rousey has stated that she wants revenge for the brutal knockout dealt to her by Holm last November.

Opinion: Requiem for a Non-Needle Mover

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Combat sports are built on the Next Big Thing. Newness captures the imagination and runs with it. Veterans exist to enforce reality, to catch up to imagination and ruin it with lessons in humility, sometimes reminding us that the Next Big Thing has been here for years. That’s the story of UFC 196 , a shotgun promotion featuring a welterweight attraction between Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight titleholder Conor McGregor and his handpicked opponent, perennial lightweight contender and former title challenger Nate Diaz . Inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, fans witnessed Diaz’s second-round rear-naked choke subject McGregor to his first loss in eight Octagon appearances. The short-lived but bloody affair did much to reset context. Diaz definitively bested McGregor, who had been preparing for 25 minutes against lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos .

Sorry, Geraldo: Paige VanZant now the odds-on favorite to win 'Dancing with the Stars'

The shift in VanZant’s favor could be attributed to heavy money coming in on her after the odds opened – at least relatively speaking, insomuch as proposition wagering on entertainment like “Dancing with the Stars” doesn’t take nearly the handle that sports bets bring in. Bovada officials did not immediately respond to an MMAjunkie request for comment on the new odds favoring VanZant.

Nate Feels Disrespected — ‘The UFC, Fans, Everybody Making Excuses For McGregor’s Loss’

“I feel like, honest, I feel like the UFC wants to weed me the f**k out of this position. I don’t know if I’m supposed to say that. Sorry. I feel like a lot of people are coming at me now. I see them making a lot of excuses for [McGregor], and I think it’s kind of ridiculous. I don’t think it’s just the UFC. It’s everybody. People are saying, ‘Oh, [McGregor] is great, he’s accepted the loss so well.’ If I would have lost, people would be saying, ‘piece of s**t shouldn’t have accepted the fight.’ I don’t mean to be bitter, but there are a lot of excuses being made for this guy. He’s talking about winning the first round. There are five rounds in a fight. Who gives a s**t if you won a round? You lost.”

Former UFC Heavyweight Matt Mitrione Signs with Bellator MMA

Bellator MMA has retained the services of another popular free agent with the signing former UFC heavyweight Matt Mitrione to a multi-fight deal. Mitrione announced the news during a Monday appearance on “The MMA Hour.” The 37-year-old fighter, who became a free agent in January, said that the UFC did not pursue its right to counter Bellator’s offer. “I have no axe to grind with the UFC at all,” said Mitrione. In addition to competing for the California-based organization, “Meathead” will also take a seat in the commentary booth. Mitrione will serve as color commentator for the upcoming Bellator Kickboxing series of events, beginning with an April 16 card in Torino, Italy. “I was really interested in the options that Bellator was offering, and I was really interested in the conversation that they were willing to have,” Mitrione said of the negotiations. “I think they’re making the right moves. I think that sometimes you get to a spot where the things you fall in love with one organization don’t really seem to be anymore, and greener pastures might be somewhere else.

25 Frank Mir: 5 Defining Moments

Whenever he leaves the cage for the final time, Frank Mir will do so as one of the most successful heavyweights in Ultimate Fighting Championship history. His journey has taken him to the highest highs and the lowest lows, as Mir fought for a piece of the heavyweight title on five different occasions and established himself as one of the most feared submission artists to ever compete in the division. The 36-year-old Las Vegas native has won more UFC fights (16), made more appearances (26) and delivered more finishes (13) than any other heavyweight to set foot inside the Octagon. His list of victims includes Roberto Traven , Pete Williams , David “Tank” Abbott , Cheick Kongo , Mirko Filipovic and Todd Duffee . Mir stacks up statistically, as well. According to FightMetric data, he ranks first on the all-time list among UFC heavyweights in submission attempts (21), second in submission average per 15 minutes (2.1), fifth in knockdowns (eight), fifth in takedowns (21), seventh in takedown accuracy (42.9 percent) and ninth in total strikes (591).

Ex-Champ Ronda Rousey Takes Significant Step Toward UFC Return

BREAKING: @RondaRousey is "Back biting apples again!" — UNINTERRUPTED (@uninterrupted) March 14, 2016 Ronda Rousey may have just cleared a significant hurdle on her way to an eventual return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship . Taken out of context, the video Rousey recently posted via Uninterrupted was relatively innocuous. But for those who remember the traumatized, post- UFC 193 Rousey, what she recently accomplished was something of a milestone. “This just as of last night,” Rousey said before taking a healthy chunk out of the shiny red obstacle in front of her. “No problem. I’m biting apples again. I’m pretty excited about this.” Rousey’s last Octagon appearance resulted in the most shocking upset of 2015, as she was brutally knocked out by Holly Holm in Melbourne last November. Holm rocked the Olympic judoka repeatedly with counter left hands before putting her out for good with a with a head kick 59 seconds into the second round of their bantamweight championship encounter. In an interview with ESPN , the previously unbeaten Rousey revealed how deep her anguish truly ran.

The Bottom Line: Justin Gaethje Wasted in WSOF Purgatory

It was just another night in the career of World Series of Fighting lightweight champion Justin Gaethje on Saturday in Colorado. He stormed out with seemingly reckless aggression, electrifying the live audience, and quickly had his opponent, a tough but beatable Brian Foster , in trouble in the WSOF 29 main event. A series of leg kicks caused Foster to collapse. Gaethje was the winner once more via technical knockout, and he celebrated with his trademark backflip off the top of the cage to the cheers of the crowd. This has become a common scene for those following the career of the undefeated lightweight. Including his amateur career, Gaethje is now 23-0 with 20 stoppages. That’s an incredibly difficult feat to accomplish in the sport of MMA, where the gloves are small and methods to win plentiful. It’s even more difficult for a fighter like Gaethje with an attacking style that frequently puts him in dangerous predicaments. Gaethje is not a cautious, defensive fighter. He fights to finish, and that leaves him open for counterattacks.

The Savage Truth: McGregor vs. Edgar vs. Aldo

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. It seems like Conor McGregor ’s choices for his first UFC featherweight title defense have been narrowed down to Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo . That is not much of a shocker for anyone who follows MMA, but the choice is a significant one for the promotion. UFC has consistently handed out rematches to deposed titleholders, so logic would dictate that Aldo might have the edge. I would argue the opposite in this case: former lightweight champion Edgar should be first in line to get a shot at the Irishman’s 145-pound strap. Now, I’m not necessarily against immediate rematches, and I do understand Aldo’s position when he claims he should be next in the queue despite his 13-second knockout loss. He dominated the featherweight division for the better part of a decade, but his spotty injury history and the obliteration in their first fight have me questioning the wisdom of putting Aldo in a main event of what will probably be the biggest event in UFC history.

Sherdog’s Top 10: UFC Plans Gone Awry - Top 10

More often than not, the Ultimate Fighting Championship runs like a well-oiled machine without equal in the MMA world. Sometimes, however, all does not go according to promotional plan. Such is the volatile nature of a sport where the smallest mistake can change everything. Plenty of fighters have ruined the UFC’s grand designs over the years. Perhaps that is part of the reason for UFC President Dana White ’s baldness. No matter how perfectly someone sketches out something, monkey wrenches are everywhere in mixed martial arts. The latest installment in the Sherdog Top 10 series examines the fighters and moments that have spoiled the UFC’s best-laid plans: *** HONORABLE MENTIONS: B.J. PBC on FS1: Lipinets Knocks Out Ghvamichava in 5th

A devastating body shot sealed the victory by #TKO for Sergey Lipinets in the main event on #PBConFS1 — PBC (@premierboxing) March 16, 2016 Welterweight prospect Sergey Lipinets impressed yet again with another sensational outing, this time against a tough, durable Georgian contender in Levan Ghvamichava. Lipinets took his time against his taller, rangier foe, but the result was still the same: another win to remain unbeaten. Ghvamichava was no slouch in the main event of Premier Boxing Champions’ latest edition of Toe-To-Toe Tuesdays on Fox Sports 1. He gave as much as he took against the favored Moscow resident and he wound up landing more punches in the contest. Though “The Wolf” trailed on the cards going into the fifth - and eventual final – round, he kept everything close and kept Lipinets honest. However, a thudding overhand right to the forehead rocked Ghvamichava (16-2-1, 12 KOs) near the midway point of the fifth and when Ghvamichava backed into the ropes, Lipinets unleashed a hellacious left hook to the body. Ghvamichava collapsed a few seconds later and remained on his gloves and knees while referee Ed Collantes counted him out, a grimace of agony plastered across his face while his head trainer Virgil Hill shouted for him to get up.

Stories from the Road: Bruce Buffer - No Place Like Home

His heaven is an octagon, its rising black cyclone fence and foam padding his sanctuary, his sandbox, his theater. It’s where no one can touch him and where he touches millions, where he’s never deterred. Neither a blown-out balloon of a knee, nor or a raging, spittle-flying 250-pound menace, nor a ritualistic slap in the face can stop him in there. It’s where the world knows him. From his trademark “It’s Time” catchphrase and his leap to his wacky body gyrations and his energy and passion, his widespread appeal has grown from the condo-living jeans-and-T-shirt crowd and the tattooed lot to the pinky-out, café au lait-sipping sculptures that sit at sidewalk tables in rattan bistro chairs thinking they live in Paris. Bruce Buffer is part of that pioneering troupe that made believers. The Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s iconic ring announcer carries a larger-than-life personality and to a large extent is one of the faces that made the sport. He was there when mixed martial arts was at its nascent stage, there at the nadir when he was in front of half-empty arenas, auditoriums and closet gyms yelling names above the din of crickets.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Georgia: Anthony Johnson

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. For example, reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Robbie Lawler may have been born in San Diego, but few would recognize him as a Californian. *** While virtually every MMA fan now recognizes Anthony Johnson as one of the fiercest punchers the sport has ever seen, few know of his humble beginnings. “Rumble” was born in Dublin, Georgia, a small town of less than 17,000 people nestled between Atlanta and Savannah.

6 Lessons We Learned from Conor McGregor

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Hearing neighbors shouting from windows on a Saturday night remains a good way to measure the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s popularity in Brazil. What was curious about UFC 196 on March 5 was that, for the first time, I saw that kind of response without a Brazilian fighter being involved in the main event. It was not Anderson Silva , Jose Aldo , Vitor Belfort or Lyoto Machida that drove fans to stay up until 3 a.m. This time, it was Conor McGregor . The phenomenon could also be observed globally through social media. When Nate Diaz locked in his rear-naked choke and forced the Irishman to tap out in the second round, fighters, coaches, fans and journalists all wanted to be heard. It seemed everyone in the MMA world saw fit to share their opinion, either recognizing McGregor’s courage, hailing Diaz’s technique or giving the trash talker some of his own medicine.

Conor McGregor’s Ex-Taekwondo Coach Asks for Forgiveness After Allegedly Killing Man

Johnny Dargan, who once served as UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor ’s taekwondo coach, is asking for forgiveness after allegedly killing another man during an altercation in Ireland earlier this month. According to report in the Irish Independent , Dargan hit 57-year-old Paddy Mullally when Mullally attempted to intervene in an argument between Dargan and his girlfriend on March 5. After receiving the alleged blow, Mullally fell to the ground and struck his head. He died from his injuries the next day. “I’m so sorry. It was an accident. I’m devastated and heartbroken for that man and his family. All I can say is I’m crushed,” Dargan said. “If I could take back everything that happened that night I would, but all I can do is beg his family for their forgiveness. It was a genuine mistake.” Dargan and his girlfriend had reportedly attended an Adele concert earlier in the evening and had been drinking. The couple began to argue when Dargan insisted on driving, which attracted the attention of several passersby. Dargan reportedly cursed at one man and freed himself from another who attempted to drag him away before he hit Mullally.

WSOF 30 Main Card Complete with Addition of Magalhaes-Heun, Azaitar-Davis

World Series of Fighting has finalized the four-fight, NBCSN-televised main card for its next event. Officials from the Las Vegas-based organization on Monday announced that WSOF 30 will include a light heavyweight clash between Vinny Magalhaes and Jake Heun , as well as a welterweight duel pitting Abu Azaitar against Danny Davis Jr. Both bouts are scheduled for three rounds. WSOF 30 takes place April 2 at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, headlined by a middleweight title fight between champion David Branch and challenger Clifford Starks . The co-main event features Jon Fitch and Joao Zeferino vying for the company’s vacant welterweight belt. Magalhaes will ride a three-fight winning streak into his bout, having submitted fellow UFC vet Matt Hamill in his October debut for WSOF. Heun has won back-to-back fights under the WSOF banner and last saw action in December, when he nabbed a split decision against Clinton Williams . Azaitar will make his first stateside appearance after winning 11 of his first 14 professional bouts, including seven by way of knockout.

41 Evan Dunham vs. Leonardo Santos Moved from UFC 198 to UFC 199

A lightweight bout between Evan Dunham and Leonardo Santos has been moved from UFC 198 on May 14 to UFC 199 on June 4. The promotion confirmed the change on its website Tuesday. UFC general manager of Brazil Giovani Decker told Revista Combate that the bout was moved because Dunham suffered a minor injury. The nature of the ailment was not revealed. UFC 199 takes place at the Forum in Los Angeles and his headlined by a middleweight title rematch between Luke Rockhold . In the co-main event, Dominick Cruz will defend the UFC bantamweight strap for a second time against Urijah Faber . Santos, who won Season 2 of “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil,” is 4-0-1 during his Octagon tenure. Most recently, the Nova Uniao product scored a first-round technical knockout victory over American prospect Kevin Lee at UFC 194 this past December. Meanwhile, Dunham went 3-0 during a successful 2015 campaign. During that time, Dunham posted unanimous decision triumphs over Rodrigo Damm , Ross Pearson and Joe Lauzon to improve to 10-6 during his UFC career.

Opinion: The Slippery Nature of MMA Greatness

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Greatness in mixed martial arts is an oft-discussed and ill-defined phenomenon. There are moments of greatness, when a single move is so spectacular and dynamic that it transcends its own context: Think the “Showtime Kick,” the “Randleplex” or simply YouTube an Anderson Silva highlight video. Then there are great fights: gutsy, never-back-down brawls, come-from-behind wins, shocking upsets and the like. If you’re spending your Monday reading MMA opinion articles, you probably don’t need too many examples; watch this sport long enough and you’ll develop a shortlist of great fights without conscious effort in the same way you involuntarily breathe in your sleep. Yet what is probably the most hotly debated and feverishly coveted claim to greatness is consideration as a great fighter. This usually requires a long-term aggregate of both of the former criterion, a rare feat that is slowly developed, hastily misapplied and readily dismissed.

James Te Huna, who fights Steve Bosse this weekend on the main card of UFC Fight Night: Hunt vs Mir, is looking forward to showing fans the new Te Huna. Or more accurately, reintroducing the old Te Huna, known for his heavy hands and aggression. But now, after close to two years since his last Octagon appearance, Te Huna has gone back to his roots ahead of his middleweight fight at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.   “Towards the end of last year I started doing seminars in New Zealand,” he said. “In my seminars, I was talking about my journey and the career that I had and the places that I traveled to train, and one key thing that I talked about was growing and developing your own style from the team of guys, the environment that you’re training in. That’s something that I went away from. I developed my own unique style that made me dangerous, and I went away from that trying to improve on other weaknesses. It’s always good to do that, but then I left my original game behind me and then I had nothing.
