Newcomer Jingliang Li meets Danny Mitchell at UFC 173 in Las Vegas

Mitchell – “The Cheesecake Assassin” – made his UFC debut earlier this month in his home country of England, but dropped a unanimous decision to Igor Araujo at UFC Fight Night 37 in London. That snapped a streak of five wins in six fights for him, a run which saw its lone loss come at the hands of UFC veteran and “Ultimate Fighter” winner Kendall Grove.

The Fighter & The Kid

This podcast has jumped to the top of my UFC/MMA podcast list - but c'mon, once a week?. I really feel like Brendan and Bryan should be able to do at least 2 eps a week, or maybe 2 hours a pop - I mean, what else do these guys have to do during the day? Brendan habitually mispronouncing every major UFC fighter's name on the roster is a nice touch, too. I also want to hear more about Bryan's mad greco skills. I think he should do each episode shirtless.

Injured Michael McDonald won't rush back to UFC, will no longer fight with a 'gameplan'

"Believe it or not, it was actually kind of satisfying. Fighting is a 24-hour a day job. Even your rest is for your work. Your food is for your work. Everything you do is for your work, so there is literally no rest when you're fighting. I'd had like 6-7 months of work straight and I kind of knew if I beat Faber, I'd be pushing through four more months of straight working. Of course it sucked to lose. I'm not saying it was nice to lose, but it is nice to have a little bit of a break. I never like to lose. Not when it comes to building my career, but in building my life, it's nice to have a breath of fresh air and relax a little bit."

The meeting between White and Holm's manager Lenny Fresquez did not go well, White said. White is not a fan of Fresquez and how he does business. He doesn’t want to deal with him anymore after Fresquez was very public about their talks. Right now, it doesn’t look good for Holm fighting in the UFC, White said.

UFC 38: Rua vs. Hendo Breakdown

A closer look shows "Shogun" had only one takedown on six attempts through three rounds. It wasn't until Henderson began fading badly in the fourth and fifth rounds that Rua piled on the takedowns. Henderson's conditioning, rather than technique, caused him to be outwrestled at UFC 139.

Johny Hendricks suffers torn bicep, scheduled to have surgery on Monday

Hendricks is doing the media rounds on Wednesday explaining the injury, but his manager Ted Ehrhardt confirmed with MMAFighting.com that Hendricks will have surgery on his right bicep Monday. According to Ehrhardt, Hendricks, who injured his bicep approximately two weeks before the fight and considered withdrawing from it as a result, heard it pop in the first round against Lawler. He also suffered a hairline fracture in his left shin in the first round.

Originally scheduled to face Doug Marshall in the Bellator Middleweight Tournament Semifinals, Florida’s own Dan Cramer will now face Jeremy Kimball. Marshall was removed from the card after having his suspension from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission extended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. With his absence, Kimball will now step in a look to punch his ticket to the tournament finals with a win over Cramer.

Johny Hendricks’ coach on future UFC title challengers: 'It’s an interesting puzzle'

Laimon is one of the most dedicated coaches in the sport and was jubilant to see his prized pupil finally reach his goal of winning a world championship. Now, he wants the name of Hendricks’ next opponent as soon as possible, but a bicep injury that will require surgery is going to force the newly minted 170-pound titleholder to delay his first defense, likely until late 2014. That could be looked at as a negative for the weight class, but it could also provide time for an undisputed No. 1 contender to rise to the surface.

33
UFC Fight Night 38 pre-fight facts: 'Shogun' could claim UFC/PRIDE wins record

Dollaway is an accurate takedown artist. He’s connected with 53.1 percent of his attempts, the third highest takedown accuracy among active middleweights and fifth highest in divisional history (minimum of five fights and 20 attempt). Oppositely, Dollaway’s opponents have had few opportunities to take him down, and they’ve largely proven unsuccessful. He’s stuffed 12 of 14 opponent attempts for a takedown defense of 85.7 percent, over 26 percentage points higher than the UFC average of 59 percent.

With teammates like Woodley lurking, Hector Lombard makes case for UFC title shot

Lombard (34-4-1 MMA, 3-2 UFC) fought Jake Shields (29-7-1 MMA, 4-3 UFC) on the same card this past Saturday at Dallas’ American Airlines Center and was talked about as potential contender with a win. He said prior to the fight that he would not face a teammate and would instead aim for bouts in the middleweight class. But now that the strap is in Hendricks’ hands, he said there’s no reason he shouldn’t vie for a title shot.

Doug Marshall off Bellator 115, Dan Cramer meets Jeremy Kimball in 185 tourney semis

Kimball most recently fought at Bellator 98, where he was stopped in the third round by Perry Filkins via rear-naked choke. That bout was the opening round of the Season 9 middleweight tournament. Coincidentally, Kimball was supposed to fight Cramer on that night, but Cramer had to withdraw with an injury and was replaced by Filkins.

Georges St-Pierre's drug testing reform demands are right on, but a little late

Yes, GSP has spoken about performance-enhancing drugs before and wanted Johny Hendricks to do VADA testing before their fight in November. St-Pierre has also been accused as a steroid user by the likes of Nick Diaz and B.J. Penn. It's clear he wants to clear his name, but St-Pierre hasn't come close to this level of outspokenness about the issue as he is now. On Monday, he was almost shouting at Helwani.

UFC announces tryouts for first all-female season of The Ultimate Fighter

Females in the 115-pound division have been invited to give it a shot and there won't be many spots available. In December, the UFC acquired 11 women's strawweight fighters from Invicta FC, including champion Carla Esparza, top contender Claudia Gadelha, fan favorite Felice Herrig and up-and-comers like Rose Namajunas and Tecia Torres.

UFC 171 prelims viewership numbers at 305,000

The takeaway from this is that after several watered down, sometimes boring cards, we finally get a good one, with an absolute barn-burner in Rick Story vs Kelvin Gastelum and it's only seen by 305K people. Historically, if the prelims had aired on FS1, it stands to reason that they would have drawn stronger numbers than the basketball tourney finals did. The outer limits of FS2 have proven to be a black hole of desolation for viewership numbers, so the decision makers may want to rethink any future cards airing here.

Glory 16 Denver fight card announced: Heavyweight tournament, Nieky Holzken, Pat Barry highlight card

A lot of good stuff on this card. To start, you have a Welterweight World Title fight between Nieky Holzken and Marc de Bonte. Holzken was last seen winning the Glory 13 Welterweight tournament in December, defeating Joseph Valtellini in my pick for kickboxing's 2013 Fight of the Year. Here, he faces Marc de Bonte in a fight fans have been asking for for some time. De Bonte is coming off a 2013 win over L'houcine "Aussi" Ouzgni, who holds 2 wins over Holzken. This should be a technical masterpiece and a terrific world title fight.

Carlos Condit to undergo surgery for torn ACL and partially torn meniscus

Condit fell to the ground in extreme pain midway through the second round of his matchup against Woodley this past weekend in Dallas.  The former champion winced during a takedown when his leg was trapped under Woodley's body as they fell to the ground.  Once the fighters were back on the feet, Woodley targeted Condit's other leg with a kick, but as the New Mexico native spun around his injury mounted on the alternate knee.

Meet the trainer who turned a dump of a gym into an MMA powerhouse

In the Greg Jackson myth, the creation story goes a little something like this: Child is born to “hyper-intellectual” pacifist hippie parents, who then raise that child in the most violent part of a violent city, a place that forces him to learn to fight or learn to run. Jackson went with fight, which is how he got here, to his revered place among MMA trainers, where he’s praised and vilified for everything he is and isn’t, the genius and the “sport-killer,” Yoda in a Tapout T-shirt.
