By the Numbers: UFC Fight Night 127

There may have been something of a changing of the guard at UFC Fight Night 127 in London. Alexander Volkov dispatched one of the heavyweight division’s longstanding mainstays at the O2 Arena on Saturday, as he defeated former champion Fabricio Werdum via technical knockout 1:38 into round four. While Volkov is just 29 years old, making him a relatively fresh face in the weight class, the ex-Bellator titlist has 36 fights and nine years on his resume. Now could be the time for the Russian known as “Drago” to make a serious move toward heavyweight gold. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 127, with statistics courtesy of Related » Matches to Make After UFC London 4: Consecutive UFC triumphs for Volkov, the second-longest active winning streak in the heavyweight division behind only reigning champion Stipe Miocic (six). In addition to Werdum, Volkov has earned wins over Stefan Struve , Roy Nelson and Timothy Johnson during his current Octagon tear. 96: Total strikes landed by Volkov.

UFC London Prelims: Charles Byrd Taps John Phillips in Octagon Debut

Can we interest you in another first round finish?!@DynamiteByrd170 with the submission on the #UFCLondon prelims! — UFC Europe (@UFCEurope) March 17, 2018 Charles Byrd needed to win twice on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series to catch an Ultimate Fighting Championship contract, but he was thankful for the experience it gave him. When he finally got into the Octagon, that experience paid off in spades as he choked out power-punching Welshman John Phillips in the first frame. Byrd (10-4 MMA, 1-0 UFC) choked out both Jamie Pickett last July, but wasn’t able to gain UFC President Dana White ’s favor and earn passage to the Octagon. Five weeks later, he fought again in the Contenders Series and choked out Randall Wallace , then finally got his contract. Making his Octagon debut against Phillips (21-7 MMA, 0-1 UFC), an SBG Ireland rep and training partner of Conor McGregor , he immediately put the fight on the deck, took full mount and hammered away with elbows. Phillips eventually escaped to half guard, but when “The White Mike Tyson” sought to scramble to his feet, “Kid Dynamite” halted him, sinking in one hook and cranking his face.

Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Werdum vs. Volkov’

Alexander Volkov channeled his inner Ivan Drago at the expense of an all-time great and perhaps put himself in position for a career-altering opportunity in the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight division. Volkov erased Fabricio Werdum ’s early gains and knocked out the two-time Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist in the fourth round of their UFC Fight Night 127 main event on Saturday at the O2 Arena in London. The 40-year-old Werdum bowed out 1:38 into Round 4, his future as murky as it has ever been. Initially, it did not go well for Volkov. Werdum executed a takedown inside the first minute and applied his ground-and-pound while chewing up clock from top position. However, Volkov escaped to his feet late in the first round, tagged the longtime Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt with a right uppercut and left him with significant damage to his right eye. Werdum continued to push for takedowns but only once managed to advance to the Russian’s back. His submission advances denied, he became increasingly desperate as Volkov made the most of his opportunities in the striking exchanges.

PHOTO | Nasrat Haqparast updates on eye infection that forced him off UFC London card, and it looks brutal |

“News regarding my fight at UFC London,” Haqparast said on Instagram shortly after his withdrawal was reported by Nolan King on Twitter. We’re sitting in the locker room and it’s just 1 hour left to the fight but unfortunately the UFC doctors stopped my fight. I got an eye infection on fight week, got 3 different medications and from day to day it became worst. I had sunglasses on on the official weigh ins to not show my infected eye and still try to fight. We tried everything possible to deliver the best performance of my life. I had the best fight camp in my life.”

“In my opinion, it stems from the top,” Johnson said. “A lot of the time you’ll see Dana White giving the fighters so much grief. If you don’t go out, just sling leather and bleed for them, then he’s talking all this smack. And because the leader of the organization acts like this, then it’s so much easier for the fans to act like this. So it really upsets me, and it’s a huge problem that I have with it.”

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Alexander the Great

Alexander Volkov arrived in the Ultimate Fighting Championship as an intriguing face in a not-so-intriguing crowd in November 2016 and did so to little fanfare. Four consecutive victories later, he has transformed himself into an unlikely contender for the heavyweight title. “Drago” overcame an inauspicious start to frustrate, fatigue and finish Fabricio Werdum , as he knocked out the two-time Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist in the fourth round of their UFC Fight Night 127 headliner on March 17 in London. Volkov brought it to a close 1:38 into Round 4, burying the Brazilian with a series of right uppercuts and a brutal standing-to-ground dagger. The win pushes the former Bellator MMA champion to No. 4 in our latest heavyweight rankings and at the very least puts him on a short list of possible suitors for whoever emerges from the champion-versus-champion superfight between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier . In a resulting move, Werdum falls to fifth on the divisional list, his immediate future clouded by increasing age and undeniable mileage.

Alexander Volkov , Jan Blachowicz , Jimi Manuwa and Paul Craig were the recipients of $50,000 bonuses for their work at UFC Fight Night 127 on Saturday at the O2 Arena in London. Volkov earned a “Performance of the Night” award for his fourth-round stoppage of ex-champion Fabricio Werdum in the evening’s heavyweight headliner. After being grounded for the better part of the first two rounds, the Russian took control down the stretch, ultimately putting his foe away with a series of punches at the 1:38 mark of round four. Related » By the Numbers: UFC London Meanwhile, Jan Blachowicz and Jimi Manuwa captured “Fight of the Night” honors for their light heavyweight duel in the co-main event. While Manuwa defeated Blachowicz in their first meeting some three years ago, the Pole exacted his revenge in the rematch. Blachowicz rocked his foe in round one and generally outpaced him on the feet for most of the contest to earn a unanimous decision. for his third straight win. Finally, Paul Craig got the card’s other “Performance of the Night” paycheck for his unlikely submission triumph over the debuting Magomed Ankalaev at light heavyweight.

Colby Covington Taunts Fabricio Werdum on Social Media After UFC Fight Night London Loss

Meanwhile, Werdum was caught on camera throwing a boomerang at the UFC welterweight. Covington later pressed charges, also alleging that Werdum punched him while he was looking at his phone in the lobby of the UFC host hotel. Ultimately, Werdum was fined $600 and charged with common assault . Covington initially drew the ire of the Brazilian people after he defeated Demian Maia at UFC Fight Night 119 when he called the country’s residents “filthy animals.

Montano recently talked with KRQE about a potential return to action this summer (via ): “I’m shooting for this summer. I’m really hoping to get on that Vegas card (at UFC 226). I had to fight through this injury the last time too, and the (UFC Performance Institute) helped me out a bunch.
