Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Hunt vs. Mir’

Only a select few men can withstand a clean punch from Mark Hunt . Frank Mir was not one of them. Hunt felled the former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight titleholder with a jarring right hand behind the ear in the first round of their UFC Fight Night “Hunt vs. Mir” main event on Saturday at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Australia. Mir met his end 3:01 into round one, the victim of a walk-off knockout from “The Super Samoan.” The soon-to-be 42-year-old Hunt continues to defy Father Time. He has compiled a 7-3-1 record across his last 11 appearances, with his only losses coming to No. 1 contender Stipe Miocic , former champion Junior dos Santos and current titleholder Fabricio Werdum . Hunt has taken out his last two opponents, Mir and Antonio Silva , in less than seven minutes combined. If there is a fountain of youth in MMA, the 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix winner has tapped into it. In wake of UFC Fight Night “Hunt vs. Mir,” here are five matchups that ought to be considered: Mark Hunt vs.

Veteran Hunt ready for another day’s work

There is genuine surprise in Mark Hunt’s voice when he learns the news. For once, oddsmakers have the “Super Samoan” as the favorite for his fight this weekend against Frank Mir in the main event of UFC Fight Night at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. “I’m actually the favorite? That’s great; that’s a first isn’t it? (Laughs)” Maybe the world has finally stopped underestimating Hunt, ranked number nine in the UFC heavyweight division. At first glance, you can understand why Hunt has been doubted so long. He doesn’t have a chiseled physique. His MMA record is an unimpressive 11-10-1, partly due to the well-documented years in which Hunt did not take the sport seriously. But that doesn’t do Hunt justice. You might guess Hunt is a powerful puncher by looking at his stocky 5’10 frame, but the former K-1 World Grand Prix kickboxing champion is deceptively fast and precise with his strikes. With six victories in the UFC, including vicious one-punch knockouts of Roy Nelson and Stefan Struve, Hunt has established himself as a legitimate contender.

Source: Marcos Galvao-Eduardo Dantas Rematch Set for Bellator 156 on June 17 in Fresno

A new date for familiar foes and old friends is set. Marcos Galvao will make the first defense of his Bellator MMA bantamweight title against Eduardo Dantas at Bellator 156 on June 17, Sherdog.com has learned. The event will go down at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. Both fighters cut their teeth with Andre Pederneiras ’ Nova Uniao squad in Rio de Janeiro, until their paths crossed at Bellator 89 on Valentine’s Day in 2013. Dantas took the victory that day with a second-round knockout, and a public breakup was the fallout as Galvao left the team to start anew in the United States. Dantas, 17-4, went on to defend the title he won that day against Anthony Leone before losing it to Joe Warren at Bellator 128. Galvao, 17-6, then pieced together three consecutive victories and was awarded a shot at Warren and his bantamweight crown. The matchup resulted in an impressive second-round technical submission (kneebar), and a new champion. Galvao-Dantas 2 was originally scheduled for Bellator 150 , but was scrapped following a last-minute illness suffered by Galvao.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Magny-ficent

Neil Magny is back in the welterweight top 10 after staging a dramatic comeback against Hector Lombard in Australia. Magny reclaims the No. 9 spot at 170 pounds in this edition of the Sherdog.com rankings, bumping Ben Askren to No. 10 and Jake Shields to the list of contenders. Over the past two years, Magny has gone on a remarkable 10-1 inside the Octagon, proving himself against fellow contenders such as Kelvin Gastelum and Tim Means , often on short notice. Lombard, who was removed from the rankings in 2015 due to a yearlong suspension, remains outside of the top 10. Samoan slugger Mark Hunt needed just one punch to knock out Frank Mir and move up the heavyweight rankings. The 41-year-old walk-off king advances to No. 8 in this update, bumping Travis Browne down one to No. 9. World Series of Fighting lightweight ace Justin Gaethje enters the fray at 155 pounds following his fourth successful title defense, a first-round finish of Brian Foster . While unbeaten Gaethje has not yet had the opportunity to test himself against the division’s true elite, his results in the WSOF cage cannot be overlooked: nine wins in nine fights, with eight via stoppage.

Due to our son's recent return in symptoms and flare up's, we are relaunching his Gofundme again. We had to take down our original one due to having a technical issue with it and start a new one. We also wanted to give an update. For a short time during the summer, Joey was feeling somewhat better, but from October 2015 untill now for unknown reasons again with this autoimmune, he's been having continuous flare-ups again. During the summer, he took lessons in MMA/wrestling/grappling and loved it being that he's a big UFC/MMA fan. His medical specialists recommended that Joey engage in sports or some type of activity to not only help with his autoimmune disorder, but to also help build his strength and confidence! Unfortunately, he hasn't been able to consistently train again since early October. Please read our son's story. It's long, but we wanted to explain everything from the beginning. We also want to thank each and everyone of you that have shown your support in the past and continue to do so, not just by donations, but for your prayers, by forwarding this site, by your uplifting and encouraging words of strength given to us, it all means a lot to us and is very much appreciated.

UFC Fight Night Brisbane Bonuses: Magny, Hunt, Matthews, Case Earn $50K

It was a tale of two rounds in the UFC Fight Night Brisbane co-main event, but ultimately it was Neil Magny who had more gas in the tank. Magny earned a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his wild welterweight showdown against Hector Lombard on Saturday night, a contest that featured a pair of huge momentum swings. Lombard had Magny on the brink of defeat in round one, knocking his foe down and swarming for the finish. The Colorado-based fighter survived, and Lombard faded badly, as Magny battered “Showeather” for the duration of round two before mercifully putting his exhausted foe away 46 seconds into the final stanza. Meanwhile, Mark Hunt earned the evening’s other $50,000 performance award for a walk-off knockout of Frank Mir in the heavyweight headliner. With Mir unable to take the “Super Samoan” down, Hunt found an opening to floor the former heavyweight king with a right hand behind the ear. Hunt knew his work was done, and the contest was waved off at the 3:01 mark of the opening frame. Finally, prospects Jake Matthews and Johnny Case earned “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their entertaining lightweight duel.

By the Numbers: UFC Fight Night Brisbane

Frank Mir stayed in Mark Hunt ’s world a little too long, and he paid the price. Hunt earned the sixth KO/TKO triumph of his Octagon tenure, as he floored Frank Mir with an overhand right for a walkoff victory at the 3:01 mark of round one in the UFC Fight Night “Hunt vs. Mir” headliner on Saturday night. While Hunt vs. Mir didn’t last long enough to produce too many figures of note, the co-main event between Neil Magny and Hector Lombard more than picked up the slack in that regard. In a bout featuring some serious momentum swings, Magny etched his place in the record books with a third-round finish of “Showeather.” Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night Brisbane, with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com. 8: Knockdowns landed by Hunt in his UFC career following his victory, tying him with Mir and Roy Nelson for No. 5 among active UFC heavyweights.. Matt Mitrione and Cain Velasquez are tied for No. 3 with nine. 0: Takedowns landed in three attempts for Mir, whose 21 career takedowns prior to the event ranked fifth all-time among UFC heavyweights.

Staying Classy

Secondly, I’m very much capable of understanding why a right-winger would take offense at the second paragraph of my first comment, thank you for your assumptions. It feels like asking them “why aren’t you total monsters, come on, make things easy for me and be obviously evil”, which of course would deeply offend any normal person who condemns violence, abhors rape, and usually has decent moral standards. Which I’m sure the overwhelming majority of conservatives are. Nobody likes to see people expecting the worst of them and denying their common decency. Also, it’s natural that people would be suspicious at a perceived attempt to do away with the distinction between verbal and physical attacks, and they would wonder how long till we go full Orwellian and start policing benign thoughts and intentions and politely expressed desires. So far, so good? Ideological Turing Test passed? Only thing is, I stand by what I said, that the far right’s newfound preoccupation for women’s safety from street harassment is predominantly motivated by political opportunism and not by actual concern for the protection of women from the sexual entitlement of strangers.

UFC Fight Night Prelims: Alan Jouban Buries Brendan O’Reilly Inside First Round

WOW! @AlanJouban absolutely UNLOADED on Brendan O'Reilly to earn himself a 1st round TKO finish! #UFCBrisbane https://t.co/bVO7V3qaQm — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) March 20, 2016 Alan Jouban likes to make violent memories. Jouban reinserted himself into the Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight picture, as he buried Brendan O'Reilly with first-round elbows and punches at UFC Fight Night “Hunt vs. Mir” on Saturday at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Australia. O’Reilly (6-2, 1-2 UFC) succumbed to blows 2:15 into round one. O’Reilly swept the Black House rep off his feet and moved towards the back during an early exchange. However, Jouban escaped to his feet, freed himself from the clinch and went to work in close quarters. Punches, knees and elbows all penetrated the Australian’s defenses. Jouban doubled up on standing elbows, drove O’Reilly to the canvas and finished it with punches. Frank Mir shouldn't feel a single ounce of shame that he got knocked out by Mark Hunt on Saturday night in Australia, but considering that was the eighth time in his UFC career that he's been finished by KO or TKO, he should begin questioning how much he has left to prove in this sport.

Sherdog’s Top 10: UFC Plans Gone Awry - Top 10

More often than not, the Ultimate Fighting Championship runs like a well-oiled machine without equal in the MMA world. Sometimes, however, all does not go according to promotional plan. Perhaps that is part of the reason for UFC President Dana White ’s baldness. No matter how perfectly someone sketches out something, monkey wrenches are everywhere in mixed martial arts. Boxing: HBO Sports’ New Voice

Peter Nelson carries a certain stoicism that belies his age. He is 34, graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Ancient Greek Language from Harvard University in 2004, speaks fluent French and feels as comfortable leaning alone against the wall in the back of a smoke-filled club show taking mental inventory as he does standing behind a podium in a vast auditorium. He now holds one of the most powerful positions in boxing -- and in all of sports, for that matter -- as the new executive vice president of HBO Sports. Nelson’s patient sagacity led him here, a wunderkind with aegis over HBO’s boxing programming, long a cornerstone of the network, as well as HBO’s many other sports platforms. His vision is to move forward, in an age where TV ratings are spread out and quality sports programming can be found almost anywhere. HBO, however, was always unique, with its sports documentary series, “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” and “Hard Knocks” and in the way it packaged its shows. Nelson wants to elevate what has been a high standard to even greater heights. “There’s obviously a great legacy here in the department and in this company, which we rise to uphold, and I think the quality of the competition being mirrored by the quality of the telecast is always the aim,” Nelson said.

Opinion: Whose Stoppage is it Anyway?

How this minute and a half long beating didn't earn a stoppage is unreal. #UFCBrisbane https://t.co/hnItuy76nD — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) March 20, 2016 Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. It was perhaps the first advertising slogan for competitive combat, and it came to define the gladiatorial games during and long after their existence: munera sine missione , “no mercy shown.” No phrase, Latin or otherwise, better captures the soul of machismo that is both the allure and allergen of violent spectacle. For all its efforts to distance itself from the barbaric analogue of the coliseums, the Ultimate Fighting Championship has employed this tried-and-true appeal to masculinity time and time again. Back when events carried names beyond the headliner or type of fight, titles like UFC 2 “No Way Out” or UFC 37.5 “As Real as it Gets” were clear tips of the hat to the same simulation of death that the Romans exploited to fill seats.

Somehow Magny was able to continue to defend himself while getting smashed against the cage. Lombard slowed down and settled in Magny's guard. Magny was able to get out and get back to his feet. After getting obliterated on the ground, Magny landed a couple of big punches on the feet, but a big punch by Lombard quickly forced Magny to shoot for the takedown. Lombard easily stuffed the takedown, landing in Magny's guard. The round ended with Mangy getting the fight back to the feet and landing a couple of punching combinations.
