Shogun Rua: Penning a New Story

In November of 2011, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Dan Henderson went to places most fighters will never know about, and we loved them for it. Their UFC 139 bout was highly-anticipated, but no one expected it to be that good. For five rounds, two superstars who didn’t have the need to add anything more to their fighting legacy fought like hungry rookies seeking a UFC contract. It was the best of the fight game fit into 25 minutes. But just as great as it was, that’s how fast it was over. Then it was on to the next card and the next card, and so on and so on. Meanwhile, the warriors recovered, far from the view of the public. “Although the fight was pretty hard, I didn't suffer any serious injuries during the fight,” said Rua through manager / translator Eduardo Alonso. “I was really worn out and dehydrated from the effort, as was Dan, and I had some cuts here and there. But as always in a tough fight in the UFC, the doctors take care of you, they take you to the hospital and check everything, and there wasn't anything serious with me. So it was more a matter of taking a vacation, enjoying family and not rushing back to the gym for the mental aspect of it.

Vegh took a split decision from Newton in July 2012 in a fight that Newton and many others believed he won. At Bellator 113, Newton got his revenge to win the title after taking the interim belt in a fight against Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal in November while Vegh was injured. He now will defend his belt for the first time against the winner of May’s fight between Lawal and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.

NSAC names ten finalists for executive director position

There are some issues with some of the names. Hubble having a long history with a sanctioning body with a history of rather embarrassing decisions, Bennett has about 3 years of experience as a judge, none in a title fight, not that that makes him unqualified...but it doesn't suggest a long history of dealing with the fight business. Bentley was assistant director of the NYSAC when they licensed Antonio Margarito despite the double whammy of his loaded hand wrap scandal (though Texas, upstanding commission that they are, had already granted Margarito a license at that point) and a major eye injury that some medical professionals thought would lead to permanent blindness.

Dan Henderson still has more to give: "I know I'm not done in this sport"

"You never know what Shogun's going to come to the fight and what condition he's in, whether he's going to catch somebody," Henderson said.  "There's a lot of variables every time he fights and you never know.  When he showed up to fight me the last time, he showed up in shape.  I'm imagining that's going to be the same case this time."

Dan Henderson: An original bad ass in a world gone corporate

No, Hendo is an original bad ass. He's been at this thing since 1997. He's fought everyone -- from Anderson Silva to Fedor Emelianenko. Henderson says he doesn’t plan on letting up any time soon -- even without testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) -- but at age 43, you have to believe the UFC's John Wayne will be riding off into the sunset sooner rather than later.

Ric's Picks: UFC Fight Night 38

Cezar Ferreira is considered a rising fighter (on the older side of "prospect") in the middleweight division, while CB Dollaway is already a known commodity. I think that's partially why Dollaway is being overlooked in the fight, as he definitely has the offensive tools to defeat Ferreira (and a lot of other middleweights for that matter). He's a competent striker with decent, but unremarkable power and a good wrestler who aggressively chases submissions. All that said, he's shown a propensity to lapse defensively, leading to the wrong end of a few finishes. Ferreira will almost assuredly want to keep this fight upright, so Dollaway needs to avoid any big shots and take it to the mat to keep Ferreira off balance. I think Dollaway can come away with a decision here.

UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Henderson 2 weigh in stream

The only fighter who missed weight on Saturday was middleweight Ronny Markes, who came in at 190 pounds -- a full four pounds over the limit for his bout against Thiago Santos.  Markes has one hour to cut the additional weight or he will be penalized a percentage of his fight purse as punishment.  Given the little amount of time and excessive weight, it's unlikely Markes will make it in time, but he has 60 minutes to try.

Early-life health struggles gave mental strength to UFC Fight Night 31's Thiago Perpetuo

“He’s a good fighter who has had bad luck with tougher opponents,” Perpetuo said of Robertson’s losses to Mike Pierce, Aaron Simpson and Sean Pierson. “I like the fact that he remains active throughout his fights. He has reasonable standup. He strikes to set up takedowns, so we’re working to address that. I think our games match up well. I’ll fight wherever it goes, but I think he’ll choose the ground.”

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is going strong in West Africa, and it looks friggin' amazing

Bellator 113: Results & gifs - becomes the undisputed Bellator light heavyweight champion

In the night's first (and much more brutal) mauling, Daniel Gallemore did the sort of things to Frederick Brown that are usually reserved for HBO late night. Brown had some success early with takedowns and was able to rough up Gallemore a bit in the clinch. But, midway through the first he went for an ill advised RNC and gave up top control. Eventuall Gallemore made his way to his feet and when the hooked up in the clinch again he unleashed several kinds of hell on Brown. For whatever reason (perhaps a blood feud) the ref decided that Brown needed to have a near death experience, finally stopping the fight after 10 or 15 more blows than necessary.

Now, every now and then, you'll get this guy, could have one UFC fight, and there's something about them, people just grab onto it. It's like, "That guy, I love that guy." And it helps when that guy can also fight. So, that's with Conor McGregor, you have a guy who, yes, he's an excellent fighter, but he has a charisma to him that people have instantly taken a liking to him.

"I think I’m good for a while," he continued with a laugh. "I feel better than before. The two years without training and pushing my body to the limit gave me an extra boost. I’m all healed up. I’m very excited and happy. It’s gonna be hard to go in a training camp without any kind of injury, but, yeah, I’ve been fighting with a PCL (injury) for a long time. But it’s all in the past. I’m finally healthy."

Cage Warriors 66 results: Nicolas Dalby stops Churilov with head kick to win title

With the Scandinavian crowd clearly behind him,  Jack Hermansson came out fired up. But then he had to settle for a a durable  Enoc Solves Torres making it tough for him to finish – though he finally got him late. Hermansson was mostly dominate the first 10 minutes. In the third, though, Torres unloaded on Hermansson with a big left hand, then a knee. Hermansson was in big trouble, and he grabbed the fence to aid himself. But Torres stayed relentless and took Hermansson’s back and looked for a rear-naked choke with plenty of time to work. After a brief scramble, Torres landed a 12-6 elbow to to the back of Hermansson’s head. Torres was warned by referee Rich Mitchell, but didn’t lose a point. And that was enough for Hermansson to recover, and he went on to really work for the finish the final two minutes with ground-and-pound. And finally, with one last flurry, Torres verbally tapped to the barrage with just 24 seconds left in the fight. Hermansson (6-2) snapped a two-fight skid. Torres (13-7) had a two-fight streak ended.

UFC signs Carlos Diego Ferreira and Alexis Dufresne

Watching Dufresne fight... I've only seen her bout against Kim Couture, who's a bit of a punching bag, but Dufresne looks like a monster. She has a brutal kicking game and uses it to control distance nicely and set up her power double. Once on top she transitions immediately into submissions and from submissions to powerful ground and pound. Unlike many fighters in her division she looks technically rock solid and ready to compete against the top ten in her division. Honestly, she looks like a premiere talent in WMMA and the kind of fighter that the UFC could build into a real star. Amanda Nunes is probably the better pure striker, but I'd say pick Dufresne as the more well rounded, physically dominant fighter.

37
UFC Fight Night 38's Francimar Barroso much less stressed this time around

“It was difficult because I only signed on the dotted line 15 days before the fight,” Barroso told MMAjunkie. “Thankfully, I was able to put on a great show. Of course, any debut comes with a certain amount of stress. This next fight will be different – not only because it’s another opponent, but because that stress of debuting is behind me. I’m willing to spill my own blood, and I’ve done it before. Hopefully it will be another victory for me.”

Mairbek Taisumov aiming for UFC Fight Night 38 win, slot at May's Berlin event

And while Taisumov insists he certainly isn’t looking past his opponent, he does admit he’s considering what could come next. If he’s able to get through the fight without too many bumps and bruises, “Beckan” would like to book a slot on the UFC’s recently-announced UFC Fight Night 41 event, which takes place May 31 in Berlin, a short trip from his home in Austria.

UFC Fight Night: Henderson vs. Shogun staff picks and predictions

Mookie Alexander : Their first fight was bonkers and it's one of the most unforgettable bouts in UFC history. The second fight is completely unnecessary and a product of a division that is currently so thin that there are few prospects who can feast on these two as potential "names" on their resume as they look for a step up in competition. Shogun looked ... well he proved me wrong as hell when I picked against him vs. Te Huna, so he's still got that dangerous power in him. But that doesn't mean he's "back", he's not strung together consecutive wins since 2009, and I think his days as a relevant contender are surely over. That said, Henderson has not looked remotely good since the Shogun win save for the 1st round of the Rashad fight, and no matter how much he uses TRT, age is finally catching up with him. I cross my fingers this isn't a dud, and that it doesn't go past round 3. Shogun is still a lethal finisher and I peg him catching Henderson with a left hook and finishing him on the ground. Mauricio Rua by TKO, round 3.

Miriam Nakamoto's coach blasts Lauren Murphy's post-fight statements

“Lauren Murphy has stated, ‘I always get my ass kicked for the first two rounds of a fight, and then I come back,’” he said. “‘So I know that even if Miriam, yes I admit, kicked my ass for the first two rounds in the fight, I was going to come back. The tide was turning. I was going to win that fight.’ That’s not true. You were 7-0 before you fought Miriam. Five of your fights were TKOs in the first or second round. The two decisions that you had went to decision and you got beat up in the first round. So if you always lost the first two rounds of your fights, when you fought Miriam, your record would have been 2-5. So that’s a lie.
