Why UFC's Toughest Fighters Are Going Vegan

Naysayers notwithstanding, more and more mixed martial arts competitors are either following the Diaz clan’s example or speaking out about a lifetime of animal-free consumption. UFC featherweight fighter Alex Caceres, who defeated Masio Fullen this past January via unanimous decision, converted to veganism within the last couple of years. Retired UFC combatant and former Ultimate Fighter welterweight winner James “Lightning” Wilks has long advocated plant-based eating. High-profile UFC signee CM Punk is a longtime vegan who also swears off any booze or intoxicants. Ex-Super Fight League Women’s Bantamweight Champion Colleen Schneider’s stuck largely to fruit and veggies for nearly 30 years. And then there’s Mac Danzig, generally cited as the first vegan pro MMA star, who made the switch about halfway through his career in the mid-2000s and was prominently featured in the 2011 documentary Forks Over Knives .

Source: Marcos Galvao-Eduardo Dantas Rematch Set for Bellator 156 on June 17 in Fresno

A new date for familiar foes and old friends is set. Marcos Galvao will make the first defense of his Bellator MMA bantamweight title against Eduardo Dantas at Bellator 156 on June 17, Sherdog.com has learned. The event will go down at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. Both fighters cut their teeth with Andre Pederneiras ’ Nova Uniao squad in Rio de Janeiro, until their paths crossed at Bellator 89 on Valentine’s Day in 2013. Dantas took the victory that day with a second-round knockout, and a public breakup was the fallout as Galvao left the team to start anew in the United States. Dantas, 17-4, went on to defend the title he won that day against Anthony Leone before losing it to Joe Warren at Bellator 128. Galvao, 17-6, then pieced together three consecutive victories and was awarded a shot at Warren and his bantamweight crown. The matchup resulted in an impressive second-round technical submission (kneebar), and a new champion. Galvao-Dantas 2 was originally scheduled for Bellator 150 , but was scrapped following a last-minute illness suffered by Galvao.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Magny-ficent

Neil Magny is back in the welterweight top 10 after staging a dramatic comeback against Hector Lombard in Australia. Magny reclaims the No. 9 spot at 170 pounds in this edition of the Sherdog.com rankings, bumping Ben Askren to No. 10 and Jake Shields to the list of contenders. Over the past two years, Magny has gone on a remarkable 10-1 inside the Octagon, proving himself against fellow contenders such as Kelvin Gastelum and Tim Means , often on short notice. Lombard, who was removed from the rankings in 2015 due to a yearlong suspension, remains outside of the top 10. Samoan slugger Mark Hunt needed just one punch to knock out Frank Mir and move up the heavyweight rankings. The 41-year-old walk-off king advances to No. 8 in this update, bumping Travis Browne down one to No. 9. World Series of Fighting lightweight ace Justin Gaethje enters the fray at 155 pounds following his fourth successful title defense, a first-round finish of Brian Foster . While unbeaten Gaethje has not yet had the opportunity to test himself against the division’s true elite, his results in the WSOF cage cannot be overlooked: nine wins in nine fights, with eight via stoppage.

Still Under WSOF Contract, Rousimar ‘Toquinho’ Palhares Signs with Venator FC

With Jason “Mayhem” Miller already in tow, Venator FC is attempting to sign another controversial fighter. The Italian mixed martial arts promotion announced on Tuesday that it has booked Rousimar Palhares to face Emil Meek on May 21 at Venator FC 3 in Milan. Palhares will fight Meek for the Venator FC welterweight title, but there could be some complications along the way. Palhares remains under contract with World Series of Fighting , and according to a report from MMAFighting.com , any attempt by the Brazilian to compete for another organization would be a violation of that deal. Apparently that agreement is of little concern to Venator President Frank Merenda, who issued a colorful statement on the situation via Facebook . “Anyway, we don’t give a f--k about WSOF. He will fight for us because we love him, Italian fans love him and he has a family and deserves to make a living,” wrote Merenda, who previously blasted media for criticizing the promotion’s recent signing of Miller. “I’m sick with organizations that try to ruin other people’s [lives].

Empire State Fistfight: How New York legalized MMA, and why it's such a big deal

“This is the first MMA show in New York,” a promoter says. “This is the first sanctioned MMA show in New York,” says another. “No, we’re the first,” and so it goes, a contest of distinctions and semantics that ultimately never really matters. What does matter is that cages are being set up nearly every weekend, promoters poking their heads out from warrens like once-hunted rabbits, struck by the realization that they no longer need to be afraid. So the fights go down in a hotel ballroom in Albany. They go down in a roller rink outside of Buffalo. They’re in rec centers near Syracuse and Ithaca. They’re everywhere, all of it driven by the economics of not having to pay fighters or fees to an athletic commission, ravenous consumers desperate for live fights, and the ridiculous profit margin therein. Five hundred spectators fill a high school gymnasium in the Bronx, crowding around the cage erected on the floor and packing into the bleachers. When an organization from Florida swoops in to put on a show at Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan, they have no problem cramming 1,500 fans into the venue to see out-of-town fighters no one knows.

20 Paige VanZant makes strong 'Dancing With The Stars' debut

Paige VanZant may not be in the strawweight title mix right now, but the 21-year-old fighter is already one of the top contenders on Season 22 of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. VanZant, whose parents owned a dance studio and grew up dancing, is partnered with pro Mark Ballas, a two-time winner and seven-time podium finisher, and the two became one of the betting favorites when the cast was announced and was the first competitor introduced in the show’s opening number. The UFC star has shared the cage with some tough competition to start her career, and the challengers are equally stiff on the dance floor. Some of the notable names looking to keep VanZant and Ballas from the title include NFL’ers Antonio Brown and Von Miller, actresses Kim Fields, Jodie Sweetin and Mischa Barton and Wayna Morris from UFC VP of Public Relations Dave Sholler’s favorite band, Boyz II Men. Historically, athletes have done well on the show, with eight first-place finishes in the first 21 seasons. But you have to go back to the Spring 2014 competition to find the last time someone from the sporting world took home top spot, when American figure skater Meryl Davis won alongside Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

New York Becomes Last State to Legalize MMA After Bill Passes Through Assembly

Mixed martial arts is finally legal in New York. After making it onto the Assembly floor for the first time in seven years, a bill to legalize MMA in New York passed with 113-to-25 vote on Tuesday; the bill needed a minimum of 76 votes. While there was opposition -- both of the outdated and outrageous variety -- over the course of a three-hour debate from some Assembly members, it wasn’t enough to prevent the bill from passing, clearing the way for the Ultimate Fighting Championship and other organizations to hold events in the Empire State. The UFC has already reportedly reserved a date to host an event at Madison Square Garden in November. In a release, the Las Vegas-based promotion also reiterated plans to hold four events per year in New York for the first three years after the legalization of MMA. “New York’s amazing arenas – upstate and downstate – have worked with us to advocate passage of this bill. So, too, have restaurants, hotels, businesses and others who recognize the economic value professional MMA can bring to New York,” UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta said in a release.

Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Hunt vs. Mir’

Only a select few men can withstand a clean punch from Mark Hunt . Frank Mir was not one of them. Hunt felled the former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight titleholder with a jarring right hand behind the ear in the first round of their UFC Fight Night “Hunt vs. Mir” main event on Saturday at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Australia. Mir met his end 3:01 into round one, the victim of a walk-off knockout from “The Super Samoan.” The soon-to-be 42-year-old Hunt continues to defy Father Time. He has compiled a 7-3-1 record across his last 11 appearances, with his only losses coming to No. 1 contender Stipe Miocic , former champion Junior dos Santos and current titleholder Fabricio Werdum . Hunt has taken out his last two opponents, Mir and Antonio Silva , in less than seven minutes combined. If there is a fountain of youth in MMA, the 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix winner has tapped into it. In wake of UFC Fight Night “Hunt vs. Mir,” here are five matchups that ought to be considered: Mark Hunt vs.

Karate Coach Wants Belfort to Avoid Grappling, Finish ‘Jacare’ in First Round at UFC 198

In the first week of April, Vitor Belfort will add reinforcements to his training camp as he prepares for a May 14 meeting with Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza at UFC 198 . Belfort will be joined by his karate master, Vinicio Antony, who previously helped “The Phenom” train for bouts against Rich Franklin , Yoshihiro Akiyama , Michael Bisping and Dan Henderson . Antony believes that the Brazilian’s sharp hands will be the turning point in his fight against Souza. “Many people say that Vitor is the favorite in the first round,” Antony this week told Sherdog.com. “The truth is that everybody plans to take him into the second round, but few are able to do so. But the last one who was able to take him into the second was knocked out by him in the same round. “The point is that Vitor well-trained, well-prepared, with a perfect camp, is almost unbeatable. Planning to take him to the second round is one thing. Achieving that goal is a little more difficult.” Antony, who has trained Belfort since the age of 16, does not deny that the 38-year-old middleweight’s strategy for beating Souza is a clear one.

Brent Primus will face Gleristone “Toninho Furia” Santos in a lightweight tilt on the Bellator 153 main card on April 22. The California-based promotion announced the pairing on Tuesday. Bellator 153 takes place at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., and is headlined by a welterweight championship clash between Andrey Koreshkov and Benson Henderson . The evening’s main card airs on Spike TV at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT. Primus, 30, is 6-0 as a professional, with four of those triumphs coming under the Bellator banner. Prospect Tom Duquesnoy to Challenge 135-Pound Champ Shay Walsh at BAMMA 25

The main event for BAMMA 25 “Champion vs. Champion” is set, and it’s a headliner worthy of the name. BAMMA featherweight champion Tom Duquesnoy (12-1, 1 NC), one of the sport’s brightest young prospects at only 22 years of age, will challenge bantamweight ace Shay Walsh (14-3) for his title. Sherdog.com confirmed the news with a source within the promotion Monday afternoon. BAMMA 25 goes down May 14 at Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, England, and will also feature a clash of undefeated lightweight prospects Marc Diakiese (8-0) and Kane Mousah (7-0). Duquesnoy, a product of Jackson-Wink MMA , is a potent finisher with nine career stoppages in 14 bouts. The Frenchman has become a staple of BAMMA and is undefeated with the promotion. Walsh, of Lancaster, England, is 6-1 in his last seven contests. The Tiger Muay Thai representative has knocked out six of his foes and also has three submissions on his résumé.

Opinion: Whose Stoppage is it Anyway?

How this minute and a half long beating didn't earn a stoppage is unreal. #UFCBrisbane https://t.co/hnItuy76nD — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) March 20, 2016 Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. It was perhaps the first advertising slogan for competitive combat, and it came to define the gladiatorial games during and long after their existence: munera sine missione , “no mercy shown.” No phrase, Latin or otherwise, better captures the soul of machismo that is both the allure and allergen of violent spectacle. For all its efforts to distance itself from the barbaric analogue of the coliseums, the Ultimate Fighting Championship has employed this tried-and-true appeal to masculinity time and time again. Back when events carried names beyond the headliner or type of fight, titles like UFC 2 “No Way Out” or UFC 37.5 “As Real as it Gets” were clear tips of the hat to the same simulation of death that the Romans exploited to fill seats.

The Bottom Line: Conor McGregor-Nate Diaz 2 Makes All the Sense in the World

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. When reports emerged late last week that the Ultimate Fighting Championship was targeting a Conor McGregor - Nate Diaz rematch for the main event at UFC 200, the initial general reaction was one of surprise. McGregor’s submission defeat at the hands of Diaz had seemed to close the door for the time being on the Irishman fighting at higher weight classes. Moreover, Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar are waiting for their rightful shots at McGregor’s featherweight title, and the discussion after UFC 196 had focused on those two names as the prospective opponents for McGregor at UFC 200. The news that a Diaz rematch was on tap was a surprise. In spite of that, the choice is one that makes more and more sense the longer it is considered. The most obvious precipitating factor in the Diaz-McGregor rematch is the massive success of UFC 196.

It has finally happened: Mixed martial arts is legal in New York. The Savage Truth: Comeuppance, Part 2

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. I thought I was going to be eating a healthy portion of crow after going on record stating that Conor McGregor would never fight at featherweight again once it was announced he was making the jump to 170 pounds to face Nate Diaz. Now it seems I may have been right after all, despite the fact that just about everyone expected him to defend his featherweight title after getting humbled by Diaz in the UFC 196 main event on March 5. While it makes about zero long-term sense to toss McGregor back in with The 209’s Finest, I can understand why the Irishman and the Ultimate Fighting Championship would be willing, even eager, to rebook the fight that knocked the Golden Child off his lofty perch -- about 1.5 million reasons to be exact, the estimated number of pay-per-view buys UFC 196 did. The $8.1 million gate wasn’t too shabby, either.

Boxing: Jesse Hart’s Close Call

Teddy Atlas, the noted trainer and TV color commentator, has referred to the boxing ring as “a chamber of truth,” where any number of difficult questions are asked and answered in the most unforgiving sport’s crucible of competition. Questions were indeed asked during the 10-round super middleweight bout between rising contender Jesse Hart and journeyman Dashon Johnson on Friday, but the truthfulness of the answers remains a matter of interpretation. Had Hart -- the Philadelphia native who scored a unanimous decision before a packed, supportive hometown crowd of 1,322 at the 2300 Arena -- displayed the grit and mettle of a future world champion despite being knocked down once and possibly twice? Or had he been exposed as a still-inexperienced neophyte by a second-tier opponent who had come in having lost 16 of his previous 24 bouts? More to the point: Will -- or should -- Hart (20-0, 16 KOs) now move on to a WBO title fight against the winner of the April 9 battle between champion Arthur Abraham (44-4, 29 KOs) and Gilberto Ramirez (33-0, 24 KOs)? Or would the son of 1970s middleweight contender Eugene “Cyclone” Hart be better served by waiting another year, maybe longer, while he gains additional seasoning? Even before his son stepped inside the ropes against Johnson, the elder Hart had suggested that maybe the wiser course of action would be for the 26-year-old to put off any bid for a world title until he logged another “six or seven” fights against a variety of fighters who would help him fill in whatever blank spaces in his repertoire that needed to be filled.
