The Hit List: Bellator MMA Champions

Based in Santa Monica, California, Bellator MMA was founded by former chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney in 2008 and has since grown into the second largest mixed martial arts promotion in the world. Rebney gave birth to “the toughest tournament in sports” -- a single-elimination competition that crowned champions in various weight classes and awarded subsequent winners an opportunity to challenge for those titles. The tournament format was discontinued when Scott Coker replaced Rebney in 2014, as the promotion followed a more traditional format under Viacom’s ownership. However, it has returned to its roots in 2018, with a heavyweight grand prix featuring Frank Mir , Fedor Emelianenko , Ryan Bader , Muhammed Lawal and others. The winner of the grand prix will lay claim to the vacant Bellator MMA heavyweight title and join this group of current and former champions who have helped move the company forward: Cole Konrad Division(s): Heavyweight Reign(s): 699 days Title Defenses: 1 *** Alexander Volkov

Frankie Edgar-Cub Swanson Rematch Targeted for UFC Fight Night 128 in Atlantic City

Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson will square off for a second time at UFC Fight Night 128 . Multiple outlets have confirmed that the promotion is targeting the featherweight booking following an initial report from . The UFC has not formally announced the fight. UFC Fight Night 128 takes place at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., on April 21 and is headlined by a lightweight clash pitting Kevin Lee against Edson Barboza . The card airs on Fox Sports 1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass. Edgar authored a dominant performance in their first meeting, ultimately submitting Swanson with a neck crank with just four seconds remaining in their five-round bout at UFC Fight Night 57 in Austin, Texas, on Nov. 22, 2014. That was part of a stretch in which “The Answer” won seven of eight featherweight appearances in the Octagon. Most recently, however, the Toms River, N.J., native suffered a first-round knockout loss to Brian Ortega in a title eliminator bout at UFC 222. Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Alexander the Great

Alexander Volkov arrived in the Ultimate Fighting Championship as an intriguing face in a not-so-intriguing crowd in November 2016 and did so to little fanfare. Four consecutive victories later, he has transformed himself into an unlikely contender for the heavyweight title. “Drago” overcame an inauspicious start to frustrate, fatigue and finish Fabricio Werdum , as he knocked out the two-time Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist in the fourth round of their UFC Fight Night 127 headliner on March 17 in London. Volkov brought it to a close 1:38 into Round 4, burying the Brazilian with a series of right uppercuts and a brutal standing-to-ground dagger. The win pushes the former Bellator MMA champion to No. 4 in our latest heavyweight rankings and at the very least puts him on a short list of possible suitors for whoever emerges from the champion-versus-champion superfight between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier . In a resulting move, Werdum falls to fifth on the divisional list, his immediate future clouded by increasing age and undeniable mileage.

Augusto Mendes Pulled from UFC Fight Night 128 Due to Potential Anti-Doping Violation

The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Augusto Mendes of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collected on March 7, 2018.  Due to the proximity of Mendes’ upcoming scheduled bout at UFC Fight Night “Barboza vs. Lee” in Atlantic City, New Jersey on April 21, 2018 against Merab Dvalishvili, Mendes has been removed from the card and the UFC is currently seeking a replacement. USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case involving Mendes. Under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full and fair legal process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed.  Additional information will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.

Alexander Volkov Seeking Heavyweight Title Shot at UFC’s Debut Event in Russia

Stipe Miocic is already slated to defend the heavyweight crown against Daniel Cormier in a champion vs. champion superfight at UFC 226, but once that concludes, Alexander Volkov believes he has the resume to be next in line. Volkov earned the biggest victory of his career to date at UFC Fight Night 127 , as he knocked out former heavyweight king Fabricio Werdum in the fourth round of their headlining encounter at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday. It was the fourth straight triumph for the Russian, giving him the second-longest active winning streak in the division behind only Miocic. In addition to his win over Werdum, Volkov has also bested Stefan Struve , Roy Nelson and Timothy Johnson during his current streak. “I think I deserve title shot right now,” Volkov said at the post-fight press conference. My winning streak is four right now. I beat a former UFC champion [Werdum] and a guy who beat the current UFC champion [Struve], so maybe it’s my time.” Related » By the Numbers: UFC London Volkov also has an idea of when he would like the opportunity to arrive.

For Francis Ngannou, calling out Brock Lesnar is about proving critics wrong

Michael Chandler won’t get his chance to avenge a previous loss to Brent Primus at Bellator 197 as originally expected. According to multiple reports, Primus has suffered an injured knee and has been forced to withdraw from his title defense on April 13 at Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo. Raquel Pennington Explains Frustration of Talk Between Cris Cyborg, Amanda Nunes

Before the official announcement earlier this month of the bantamweight title bout between Amanda Nunes and Raquel Pennington , rumors were circulating that the contest would be put on the backburner to accommodate a superfight between 135-pound queen Nunes and featherweight champion Cris Cyborg . Pennington, as expected, was extremely frustrated hearing that these rumors even existed and felt she deserved the title shot rather than awarding someone from a different weight division an opportunity at the crown. What made it even more difficult was that Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White all but confirmed the matchup between Nunes and Cyborg after the Brazilian’s latest victory over Yana Kunitskaya earlier this month. “Rocky” appeared recently on “ The MMA Hour ” to discuss her frustrations with the situation. “I have to admit I was frustrated with it and I started making calls right away because I don’t find that very fair at all,” Pennington said Monday on The MMA Hour. “I think I’ve definitely earned this spot and I think that fight deserved to be mine.

“I mean even if — and I really mean this — even if the the circumstances I had with Mario hadn’t happened, just take my whole situation out of the equation, just watching that fight with Valentina Shevchenko and [Priscila Cachoeira], seeing the way he handled that fight, I was appalled,” Chiesa told MMAWeekly. “It had nothing to do with my own personal vendetta with the guy, it all just comes down to an official’s job, their No. 1 job is to protect the fighters. Protect the fighters from themselves, sometimes we can be too tough for our own good. It’s not about upholding the rules. It’s about protecting the fighters and he obviously is way too incompetent to do that.

UFC Flyweight Queen Nicco Montano Says She’s not Ducking Valentina Shevchenko

Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s flyweight champion Nicco Montano became the inaugural UFC women’s 125-pound champion in December after earning a unanimous decision victory over veteran Roxanne Modafferi . Montano, who is recovering from a broken foot which she aggravated before the championship fight, has had to fend off accusations that she is avoiding a fight against Valentina Shevchenko . Shevchenko recently moved down to the flyweight division after her loss against bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes . Shevchenko made easy work of Priscila Cachoeira in her debut at 125 pounds last month, winning by second-round submission with the victory securing her status as the No. 1 contender. Montano recently talked with KRQE about a potential return to action this summer (via ): “I’m shooting for this summer. I’m really hoping to get on that Vegas card (at UFC 226). I had to fight through this injury the last time too, and the (UFC Performance Institute) helped me out a bunch. I think that it could have turned out a different way without that support, so I’m really hoping for that July card in Las Vegas.
