But then in the third, he unleashed his famous right hand to get a TKO stoppage – and another highlight-reel finish for his resume.

Injury moves Chris Weidman-Lyoto Machida title fight from UFC 173 to UFC 175

Machida won the 205-pound title in 2009 when he knocked out Rashad Evans. He defended the belt just once against Mauricio Rua before losing it at UFC 113 in a rematch with “Shogun.” It was up and down for him at that point, as he dropped three of four starting with the Rua loss – including a title shot against Jon Jones at UFC 140. But since then, he has won four of five with just a controversial loss to Phil Davis separating him from a 5-0 run.

Formiga Finally Wins The Big One - UFN Natal 2014 Prelim Results

It took four UFC fights, but hometown hero Jussier Formiga finally showed off the form that had him listed among the best flyweights in the world on Sunday, as he submitted Scott Jorgensen in less than a round in UFC Fight Night action from Ginasio Nelio Dias in Natal, Brazil. “Scott was the favorite," said Formiga, who was 1-2 in his first two Octagon bouts. "Everyone I fight is the favorite. This win proves that I’m able to beat tough opponents. I’m here to prove I’m one of the top fighters in my division." Jorgensen (14-9) set a furious pace at the start, looking to implement his striking game as Formiga tried to find an opening for the takedown. Formiga (16-3) didn’t shy away from standing with Jorgensen though, and after pushing his foe to the canvas midway through the round after a clash of heads, he had his chance to get his ground game going. From there it didn’t take long, as Formiga took Jorgensen’s back and locked in the rear-naked choke that forced “Young Guns” to tap out. The official time was 3:07. "He jumped in and when I threw he headbutted me," said Jorgensen.

Old war horse Dan Henderson bucks critics (defies everything else)

Not that a stoic like Dan Henderson would look at this way, but those were some crazy f---ing circumstances he overcame on Sunday night in Natal, Brazil. Here was a 43-year old man who’d lost three fights in a row walking out in enemy territory in muggy 93 degree weather to fight Mauricio Rua , who by the way was hell-bent on revenge after all that turbulence in San Jose a couple of years ago. Perhaps it was predictable that Shogun come out like a bull at Pamplona for ten solid minutes, goring Henderson with everything he threw at UFC Fight Night 38. Sunday was Shogun’s night, after all -- it was his party. Henderson was essentially knocked out at one point, and severely parted of wit on another. His "intelligent defense" was more theoretical than actual as he fished around for Shogun’s leg, trying to cling to something that might keep him from schlepping off towards his ancestors in Valhalla. By the end of the second round, the game’s most famous chin was barely holding up. How much more punishment could Dan Henderson, a middle-aged man who woke up to the shouts of his cornermen to drop that "H-bomb" whenever he saw Rua flash that jab, take in this young man’s game? Not much more.

http://www.cagepotato.com/ufc-fight-night-shogun-vs-henderson-2-fight-highlights-bonuses-and-recap/

Dan Henderson and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua fought for the second time last night in Natal, Brazil , and though we weren’t treated to another five-round dogfight , the rematch turned out to be nearly as incredible as their first meeting. This time, it was Henderson who was getting beaten up in the early rounds, as an energized Shogun Rua came close to finishing the American legend on more than one occasion. It seemed like Henderson’s heart, experience, and still-solid chin were the only things keeping him alive going into round three. And then… boo-yah .

UFC Fight Night 38 bonuses: Henderson wins $100,000, Rua, Pepey earn $50,000

In the main event, a rematch of their epic 2011 fight, Henderson (30-11 MMA, 7-5 UFC) and Rua (22-9 MMA, 6-7 UFC) appeared to be on their way to a potentially one-sided affair. “Shogun” seemed to do damage to Henderson in the first two rounds, and nearly had him finished. But in the third, Henderson and his legendary right hand pulled it out, getting the TKO stoppage – and probably breaking Rua’s nose in the process.

Yohan Mulia Legowo grew up in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia, and was exposed to all forms of martial arts from a young age. Since nine, Legowo has been committed to learning all the various forms of martial arts in the world and would take his time mastering each one before gradually progressing to the next. He eventually began to compete, earning accolades in Kickboxing, Sanda, and Submission Grappling. Like many Indonesian mixed martial artists, Legowo also had a sustained run in the now-defunct TPIFC from 2002 to 2004, including a contest against Fransino Tirta, another recent signing by ONE FC. His career stalled in 2007, when he suffered a broken arm. Although doctors told him his career was over, he resiliently fought back, recuperating intensely before finally being able to return to mixed martial arts action in 2010. Since then, he has been determined to make up for lost time and has not looked back since.

The veteran Brazilian light heavyweight doesn’t look the part of an athlete that can rattle off 15 minutes of high output striking, but without fail, there is Maldonado, turning up the intensity and battering his opponents as the fight wears on. Sunday night, “The Brazilian Zombie” endured a tough first round to put it on the New Yorker over the final two frames, tiring out Villante and picking him apart en route to a unanimous decision win.

Dan Henderson's future lies in a league of legends, not title contention

Now there are going to be cries after this amazing comeback victory that Henderson should consider retirement even if he did win on Sunday night against Shogun.  He was getting plastered through the first two rounds before pulling out the Hail Mary punch in the third that won him the fight.  It's also well known that former champions rarely retire, but more so get forced to step away after a series of devastating defeats.  So how great would it be to see an icon like Henderson win a big fight, take off his gloves and call it a career?

“It didn’t feel good to have to recover like that, but I don’t think I was hurt real bad in the first,” said Henderson, who was taken off his feet by a two-punch combo early in Sunday’s headliner at Ginasio Nelio Dias in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. UFC Fight Night 38 results: Dan Henderson TKOs 'Shogun' Rua with right hand in third

Rua took the center of the cage as Henderson circled outside in the early going. And Henderson landed a right hand counter on a “Shogun” kick 25 seconds in. Rua looked to land leg kicks in the first 90 seconds, and Henderson did little to check them early. But two minutes in, Henderson fired back with one of his own. The two briefly tied up midway through, but there was little to come of things on the ground. With a minute left in the round, the two briefly tied up for “Shogun” to land a knee.

UFC Fight Night results: Did referee Herb Dean botch the Henderson vs. Shogun stoppage?

it was an incredible come from behind victory for Henderson, who almost everyone was counting out by the time he landed the fight changing blow. Yet, the stoppage didn't come without controversy. After Rua fell to the mat, he turtled and clung to Henderson as the latter pursued the finish. As referee Herb Dean moved into position, Henderson landed a series of blows to the back of the head before the match was stopped (as you can see here ). Having apparently not seen the illegal strikes, Dean called the fight without addressing them.

Phil Davis: Jon Jones is like a shortbread cookie that will ‘crumble in the palm of my hands’

In the pool of UFC light heavyweights vying for a title shot, Phil Davis has usually been one of the more reserved. Even with eight wins in ten UFC fights -- and only one official loss against Rashad Evans more than two years ago -- Davis has sort of hovered in the quiet area of radar contenders. In short, he hasn't been one to bang a gong in the media to expedite a title shot. That is, until recently. Davis began criticizing current 205-pound champion Jon Jones for being overly finicky when it came to opponents. Davis, who fights Anthony Johnson at UFC 172 in Baltimore on April 26, went so far as to tell Sportsnet Canada that Jones should be on UFC payroll as a matchmaker, and that the UFC might as well hold "The Ultimate Jon Jones Fighting Championship" tournament to determine the next challenger.  Davis appeared on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour and said that those comments don’t necessarily mean there’s any real animosity towards Jones. He just views the champion as someone he’d like to get his hands on at some point. "I don’t so much dislike Jon Jones -- and you know what, I have to throw it back to you and your colleagues, because I’ve been misquoted a couple of times," he told host Ariel Helwani.

UFC Fight Night - Shogun vs. Henderson II Results: Winners and Losers

Scott Jorgensen: For a guy who was fighting Dominick Cruz for the bantamweight title on the last WEC show in December of 2010, this is a long way to fall. I understand that Formiga's headbutt played a large role in the sequence that ended the fight, but he really hasn't grown as a fighter in the last few years. Although he's now 1-5 in his last six and 3-6 in his last nine, I don't think he'll get cut - just look at the murderer's row he's faced, from Cruz to Barao to Faber - but there's no denying that if he doesn't, he's walking on the thinnest ice possible. He needs to show a new facet to his game or at least drastically improve his existing skill sets in a division that's getting deeper by the day.

Early stoppage? 'It wouldn't have made a difference,' UFN 38's Rony Jason says

“I just work for the UFC,” Jason said after the fight, which moved the “TUF: Brazil” winner to 9-1 in his past 10 fights. “The assigned referees are very prepared to protect every athlete, so I don’t think it’s up to anyone to say if it was stopped early. The same person who criticizes this and says it was an early stoppage might also complain about a late stoppage.”
