UFC owner teases 'epic, massive' event for debut in New York
"I think it's going to be an epic moment for the sport and for our company," Fertitta said. "Obviously, right now all of our focus is on trying to put together the matches for UFC 200, but when we go to New York and we eventually debut at Madison Square Garden, me and Dana (White) and the rest of the team are going to be very focused on delivering for the fans. We're going to put together the best available matches that we can. You'd have the biggest names that we can possibly put on, the biggest names that are available at the time. Believe me, we want to knock it out of the park and we want to deliver to New York in a big way.

Jim Genia Joins Press Row
Every Wednesday, Administrative Editor Jordan Breen welcomes a member
of the mixed martial arts media into “Press Row” on the Sherdog.com
blog. This week, Breen is joined by veteran New York-based MMA
journalist Jim
Genia .
Tuesday ended the most difficult chapter in the eight-year odyssey
towards sanctioned MMA in New York, as the State Assembly voted
113-25 to legalize the sport. Breen and Genia, who has expertly
covered the push toward regulation in the state, talk about the
farcical and amusing political show that took place on Tuesday,
what bureaucratic steps come next to clear the way for the UFC to
run at Madison Square Garden, and when that card comes, what
fighters might find themselves on it, from Jon Jones to
Chris
Weidman to Jimmie
Rivera .
Breen and Genia also discuss whether Bellator MMA will beat the UFC
to the punch by running the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, if Zuffa
will stay true to its word of delivering four events per year to
New York state and for how long. As well, Genia, the author of
”Raw Combat: The Underground World of Mixed Martial Arts,”
reminisces on the greatest moments in underground, unsanctioned New
York MMA, including early bouts from Frankie
Edgar .

MMA’s Greats of the States | Hawaii: B.J. Penn
Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe,
bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of
their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or
state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States
are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly
is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series,
the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of
all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily
need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need
to be associated with it. For example, reigning Ultimate Fighting
Championship welterweight titleholder Robbie
Lawler may have been born in San Diego, but few would recognize
him as a Californian.

Nate Diaz wants something even bigger than a title fight
"I think that title thing's a fairytale," Diaz said on "UFC Tonight". "All these guys are like 'I want the belt, I want to be the champion' but the best fighters in the world are getting paid the best money. That belt thing, as far as I'm concerned, is a fairytale. That might piss a lot of people off, but money talks. If the best fighters aren't getting the most money then why are they getting paid that money for?"

Miesha Tate didn't get in the sport just to fight Ronda Rousey
"I think that what I've decided as the champ that I need to have the mentality that I can be ready to beat anybody in the world at any time," Tate told "UFC Tonight" on Wednesday. "I'm not trying to look past anyone because I feel like there's so many top contenders out there right now. I could name obviously Ronda (Rousey), Holly (Holm), Cat Zingano, Amanda Nunes, even Julianna Pena -- those are all really solid competition and I don't want to think 'well I'm set on just this one person.' I've got a contract signed and it's not really my job to pick who's next.

Nate Diaz More Interested in Money Than Titles: ‘The Belt is a Fairy Tale’
Nate
Diaz doesn’t harbor dreams of UFC gold.
For the Stockton, Calif., native, career accomplishments are best
measured by the zeroes in the bank account, not the hardware in the
trophy case. That’s why, if the rematch with Conor
McGregor takes place at UFC 200
as rumored , Diaz won’t care that a championship is not at
stake.
“I think that title thing is a fairy tale,” Diaz said Wednesday on
UFC Tonight. “The best fighters in the world are getting paid the
best money. The belt is a fairy tale, as far as I’m concerned. That
might piss a lot of people off.”
Diaz is only now realizing his earnings potential within the Las
Vegas-based promotion in the wake of his second-round submission
triumph against McGregor at UFC 196. For that bout, Diaz earned a
disclosed payday of $600,000 (including $100,000 in bonuses). And
UFC President Dana White has hinted that the Cesar
Gracie protege took home quite a bit more than that.
The event was a box-office hit as well, doing in the neighborhood
of
1.5 million pay-per-view buys , according to White. That success
could very well be the promotion’s impetus behind booking a
rematch.

EA Sports apologizes to Khabib Nurmagomedov after religious error in game
I'm Muslim, Alhamdulilah. I have nothing against Christians. Every man in this life has his own way, and my way is Islam. Developers of the game made mistake. Let's be honest, every human being made mistakes, and I'm not holding a grudge. They apologized and promised to fix it. Hopefully, next time they wouldn't make mistakes like this, and take account everybody's religion. @easportsufc @ufc

WrestleMania Season: Reflections as MMA Rages On into Big Apple
It’s time! No, not for
Ultimate Fighting Championship announcer Bruce Buffer’s
trademark introduction to a main event fight (at least not yet).
It’s time for the UFC’s last barrier of entry into the mainstream
-- New York City, and the combat sports mecca in its midst, Madison
Square Garden.
Mixed martial arts were banned in New York for 19 years. Countless
legal battles and one corrupt imprisoned Sheldon Silver later, MMA
has finally arrived in the world’s media capital thanks to the New
York State Assembly surpassing the required approval mark, 76
votes, with 113. Only 25 opposed it (although the absurd speeches
too extensive to get into here made it seem like it’s still
1993-level ignorance about the sport).
The news is long overdue -- a sigh of relief for anyone who loves
thin pizza slices and sanctioned combat sports just the same. The
UFC’s lobbying dollars and media campaigns should receive the
lion’s share credit for the sport crossing the last hurdle (MMA
media sites and New York-based journalist Jim Genia too).
The UFC last brought the Octagon to New York in 1995 when MMA was
still no holds barred.

Floyd Mayweather's uncle rips Conor McGregor, Dana White, and Ronda Rousey | BJPenn.com UFC Fight News & Videos
“Everybody listening to Dana White talking that stupid (expletive) about Ronda Rousey beating up men and now they jump on Conor McGregor’s bandwagon, they don’t got no (expletive) wagon no more. That (expletive) is over with,” Mayweather said. “They don’t got nothing else to talk about. It shows that they need Floyd to promote their sport. They want to talk (expletive) about the man, but it just shows how much they truly need Floyd to promote their company.
“Floyd has never ever said that he wanted to fight one of them. He never said, “I’ll beat Ronday Rousey,” or “I’ll beat Conor McGregor.” Like I said, they had they little moment of fame. McGregor’s lasted almost a year and Rousey’s lasted about a year and a half. That (expletive) is over with now. They can shut the (expletive) up about that dumb (expletive). They can shut the (expletive) up about what a MMA fighter can do to Floyd Mayweather because ain’t (expletive) going to happen to Floyd.”

Trainer: ‘Anderson Silva as Motivated as He Was at Beginning of MMA Career’
Anderson
Silva has already arrived in Rio de Janeiro to begin his camp
for Uriah
Hall , whom he will face at UFC
198 on May 14 in Curitiba, Brazil.
Although “The Spider” is now 40 years old and hasn’t officially won
a fight since October 2012, his passion for the sport is still
strong, according to physical trainer Rogerio Camoes.
“Anderson is motivated like he was in the beginning of his career.
For a long time I didn’t see him that way,” Camoes told
Sherdog.com. “Actually before the Bisping fight he was already so
excited to take part in the first UFC event in Curitiba. Now he
will have the opportunity to fight for his people where he started
his story, so he’s really happy. He is physically in shape,
focused.
“I really like to see Anderson that way. Of course Hall is a great
opponent, a top of the division [talent] who deserves all respect.
Besides being a new guy with lots of physical strength, he is also
very technical. It is definitely going to be a great battle.”
Camoes said that Silva will train with his usual group of coaches,
an experienced team that will include same Thailand-based muay Thai
coach who helped him prepare for Nick Diaz at
UFC 183.

Chris Weidman: ‘Vision Even Stronger’ to Regain UFC Title with MMA Legalized in New York
New York native Chris
Weidman has long been one of the prominent figures behind the
UFC ’s push to legalize MMA in the Empire State.
With that dream now a reality, the former middleweight champion has
some business to handle on the opposite coast. Weidman is scheduled
to rematch Luke
Rockhold in the
UFC 199 headliner at the Forum in Los Angeles on June 4.
Weidman lost the 185-pound strap to the American Kickboxing Academy
product via fourth-round technical knockout at UFC
194 on Dec. 12.
While Weidman is a virtual lock to be on the UFC’s first card at
Madison Square Garden, the moment would be that much sweeter if
gold was wrapped around his waist during his walk to the
Octagon.
“The vision gets even stronger now. I had to get my belt back, but
now just the fact that I’m going to get to defend my belt in
Madison Square Garden in front of all of New York is crazy to even
start to think about,” Weidman said during a recent conference
call. “It definitely gets me more excited.”
Rockhold, of course, had a decidedly different perspective on
Tuesday’s monumental news:
Glad to see NY on the menu now.

Referee Herb Dean to Officiate Daniel Cormier-Jon Jones Rematch at UFC 197
Herb
Dean will be the third man in the cage when Daniel
Cormier and Jon Jones
square off in the UFC
197 headliner on April 23.
The assignment was revealed during Wednesday’s Nevada Athletic
Commission meeting. Meanwhile, Sal D’Amato, Junichiro Kamijo and
Chris Lee will serve as cageside judges for the light heavyweight
title rematch.
Dean was the referee when Cormier and Jones first fought at
UFC 181 on Jan. 3, 2015 in Las Vegas. Jones won that fight via
unanimous decision, receiving identical 49-46 scorecards from
Marcos Rosales, Cardo Urso and Tony Weeks.
Cormier registered a minor complaint regarding Dean during the
hearing, as he claimed that the veteran official allowed the
contest to slow down in the later rounds instead of restarting the
action when it stalled. The NAC made note of the complaint, but
Dean will remain the referee for the UFC 197 headliner.
UFC 197 takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will
see Demetrious
Johnson defend the flyweight strap against Henry
Cejudo in the co-main event.

WSOF Weighs In: Who's Your Favorite Superhero?
My favorite superhero is well… Me. But if I can’t pick myself, it’s got to be Night Owl a.k.a Hollis Mason from Watchmen. Not only did he take a real approach to the superhero game, but he also trained in boxing. (This comic takes place in the 1940s so no MMA.) He beats bad guys with his brains and skills no superpowers. I know, I know. Sounds like Batman. But, over the years he’s gotten more and more ‘skills’ that seem like superpowers to me.

I think he should do each episode shirtless.

Still Under WSOF Contract, Rousimar ‘Toquinho’ Palhares Signs with Venator FC
With Jason “Mayhem”
Miller already in tow,
Venator FC is attempting to sign another controversial
fighter.
The Italian mixed martial arts promotion announced on Tuesday that
it has booked Rousimar
Palhares to face Emil Meek on May 21 at
Venator FC 3 in Milan. Palhares will fight Meek for the Venator
FC welterweight title, but there could be some complications along
the way.
Palhares remains under contract with
World Series of Fighting , and according to a report from
MMAFighting.com , any attempt by the Brazilian to compete for
another organization would be a violation of that deal.
Apparently that agreement is of little concern to Venator President
Frank Merenda, who issued a colorful statement on the situation via
Facebook .
“Anyway, we don’t give a f--k about WSOF. He will fight for us
because we love him, Italian fans love him and he has a family and
deserves to make a living,” wrote Merenda, who previously
blasted media for criticizing the promotion’s recent signing of
Miller. “I’m sick with organizations that try to ruin other
people’s [lives].

2) The man who wielded extraordinary power for decades, Speaker of the New York State Assembly Sheldon Silver was arrested in January 2015 on federal corruption charges, later found guilty on all. Silver routinely delayed the previous bills on MMA so they never got to a full vote. With Silver out of the way proponents thought the bill was a done deal last year. It wasn’t. However Silver’s arrest brought such attention to his anti-MMA stance, ironically it might’ve finally persuaded the governor to not let the sport try to make it as a stand alone any longer.
