WrestleMania Season: Reflections as MMA Rages On into Big Apple

It’s time! No, not for Ultimate Fighting Championship announcer Bruce Buffer’s trademark introduction to a main event fight (at least not yet). It’s time for the UFC’s last barrier of entry into the mainstream -- New York City, and the combat sports mecca in its midst, Madison Square Garden. Mixed martial arts were banned in New York for 19 years. Countless legal battles and one corrupt imprisoned Sheldon Silver later, MMA has finally arrived in the world’s media capital thanks to the New York State Assembly surpassing the required approval mark, 76 votes, with 113. Only 25 opposed it (although the absurd speeches too extensive to get into here made it seem like it’s still 1993-level ignorance about the sport). The news is long overdue -- a sigh of relief for anyone who loves thin pizza slices and sanctioned combat sports just the same. The UFC’s lobbying dollars and media campaigns should receive the lion’s share credit for the sport crossing the last hurdle (MMA media sites and New York-based journalist Jim Genia too). The UFC last brought the Octagon to New York in 1995 when MMA was still no holds barred.

Trainer: ‘Anderson Silva as Motivated as He Was at Beginning of MMA Career’

Anderson Silva has already arrived in Rio de Janeiro to begin his camp for Uriah Hall , whom he will face at UFC 198 on May 14 in Curitiba, Brazil. Although “The Spider” is now 40 years old and hasn’t officially won a fight since October 2012, his passion for the sport is still strong, according to physical trainer Rogerio Camoes. “Anderson is motivated like he was in the beginning of his career. For a long time I didn’t see him that way,” Camoes told “Actually before the Bisping fight he was already so excited to take part in the first UFC event in Curitiba. Now he will have the opportunity to fight for his people where he started his story, so he’s really happy. He is physically in shape, focused. “I really like to see Anderson that way. Of course Hall is a great opponent, a top of the division [talent] who deserves all respect. Besides being a new guy with lots of physical strength, he is also very technical. It is definitely going to be a great battle.” Camoes said that Silva will train with his usual group of coaches, an experienced team that will include same Thailand-based muay Thai coach who helped him prepare for Nick Diaz at UFC 183.

Jim Genia Joins Press Row

Every Wednesday, Administrative Editor Jordan Breen welcomes a member of the mixed martial arts media into “Press Row” on the blog. This week, Breen is joined by veteran New York-based MMA journalist Jim Genia . Tuesday ended the most difficult chapter in the eight-year odyssey towards sanctioned MMA in New York, as the State Assembly voted 113-25 to legalize the sport. Breen and Genia, who has expertly covered the push toward regulation in the state, talk about the farcical and amusing political show that took place on Tuesday, what bureaucratic steps come next to clear the way for the UFC to run at Madison Square Garden, and when that card comes, what fighters might find themselves on it, from Jon Jones to Chris Weidman to Jimmie Rivera . Breen and Genia also discuss whether Bellator MMA will beat the UFC to the punch by running the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, if Zuffa will stay true to its word of delivering four events per year to New York state and for how long. As well, Genia, the author of ”Raw Combat: The Underground World of Mixed Martial Arts,” reminisces on the greatest moments in underground, unsanctioned New York MMA, including early bouts from Frankie Edgar .

Opinion: Adrien Broner’s Biggest Problem is Adrien Broner

Your worst enemy in boxing is usually the opponent standing across from you trying to cram the leather from his boxing gloves into your face repeatedly until you lose consciousness. Adrien Broner’s worst enemy continues to be the man in the mirror. With reports coming in that Broner is facing felony assault and aggravated robbery chargers in his hometown of Cincinnati just a week before his April 1 fight with Ashley Theophane, you have to wonder how much longer he will last in this sport. He came into the game with high expectations and quickly showcased that he had the talent to one day be great by capturing world titles in four weight classes by the age of 26. However, what he has accomplished inside the ring is not what he’s known for. It’s what he continues to do outside of it. Admittedly, when the reports rolled in that Broner assaulted a man outside of a bowling alley in January after a heated game involving money and then took $12,000 out of the unconscious man’s pocket, I wasn’t all that surprised. Sadly, it sounds like something Broner would do, not necessarily the pistol-whipping part but everything else leading up to it.

Miesha Tate didn't get in the sport just to fight Ronda Rousey

"I think that what I've decided as the champ that I need to have the mentality that I can be ready to beat anybody in the world at any time," Tate told "UFC Tonight" on Wednesday. "I'm not trying to look past anyone because I feel like there's so many top contenders out there right now. I could name obviously Ronda (Rousey), Holly (Holm), Cat Zingano, Amanda Nunes, even Julianna Pena -- those are all really solid competition and I don't want to think 'well I'm set on just this one person.' I've got a contract signed and it's not really my job to pick who's next.

This podcast led to me learning more about Bas Rutten, UFC and boxing history, and has altogether broadened my intake of combat sports. Thank you Rutten and Ranallo and keep up the awesome work!

Nate Diaz More Interested in Money Than Titles: ‘The Belt is a Fairy Tale’

Nate Diaz doesn’t harbor dreams of UFC gold. For the Stockton, Calif., native, career accomplishments are best measured by the zeroes in the bank account, not the hardware in the trophy case. That’s why, if the rematch with Conor McGregor takes place at UFC 200 as rumored , Diaz won’t care that a championship is not at stake. “I think that title thing is a fairy tale,” Diaz said Wednesday on UFC Tonight. “The best fighters in the world are getting paid the best money. The belt is a fairy tale, as far as I’m concerned. That might piss a lot of people off.” Diaz is only now realizing his earnings potential within the Las Vegas-based promotion in the wake of his second-round submission triumph against McGregor at UFC 196. For that bout, Diaz earned a disclosed payday of $600,000 (including $100,000 in bonuses). And UFC President Dana White has hinted that the Cesar Gracie protege took home quite a bit more than that. The event was a box-office hit as well, doing in the neighborhood of 1.5 million pay-per-view buys , according to White. That success could very well be the promotion’s impetus behind booking a rematch.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Hawaii: B.J. Penn

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. For example, reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Robbie Lawler may have been born in San Diego, but few would recognize him as a Californian.

Held-Jansen, Gormley-Beltran Added to Bellator 155 Main Card in Boise

A lightweight tussle between Marcin Held and Dave Jansen and a heavyweight tilt pitting Chase Gormley against Joey Beltran have been added to the Bellator 155 lineup. Promotion officials announced the pairings on Thursday. Bellator 155 takes place at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho, on May 20 and is headlined by a middleweight title clash between Rafael Carvalho and Melvin Manhoef . Held-Jansen and Gormley-Beltran will both appear on the main card, which airs on Spike TV beginning at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT. Held saw a six-fight winning streak end at Bellator 145, as he dropped a five-round verdict to reigning 155-pound champ Will Brooks in November. Meanwhile, Jansen had a seven-bout streak snapped by Brooks in a five-round defeat at Bellator 136 in April. Gormley, a two-time UFC veteran, lost to Dan Charles via second-round KO in his promotional debut at Bellator 143 this past September. Beltrran is 2-3 in Bellator but is coming off a first-round stoppage of Lamont Stafford in December on the regional circuit.

Chris Weidman: ‘Vision Even Stronger’ to Regain UFC Title with MMA Legalized in New York

New York native Chris Weidman has long been one of the prominent figures behind the UFC ’s push to legalize MMA in the Empire State. With that dream now a reality, the former middleweight champion has some business to handle on the opposite coast. Weidman is scheduled to rematch Luke Rockhold in the UFC 199 headliner at the Forum in Los Angeles on June 4. Weidman lost the 185-pound strap to the American Kickboxing Academy product via fourth-round technical knockout at UFC 194 on Dec. 12. While Weidman is a virtual lock to be on the UFC’s first card at Madison Square Garden, the moment would be that much sweeter if gold was wrapped around his waist during his walk to the Octagon. “The vision gets even stronger now. I had to get my belt back, but now just the fact that I’m going to get to defend my belt in Madison Square Garden in front of all of New York is crazy to even start to think about,” Weidman said during a recent conference call. “It definitely gets me more excited.” Rockhold, of course, had a decidedly different perspective on Tuesday’s monumental news: Glad to see NY on the menu now.

Food Sensitivities

Food allergies and food sensitivities are common. The main difference between the two is the severity of reaction after consumption of a certain food. Someone who's allergic to peanuts can go into anaphylactic shock if they're exposed to the smallest amounts of peanut dust, while an individual who's "only" sensitive to peanuts might get stomach pain, itchy tongue or something else minor.

Opinion: The Surprising Perks of Not Getting What You Want

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. The Nevada Athletic Commission on Wednesday firmed up its officiating assignments for UFC 197 , and Daniel Cormier spoke up and objected to Herb Dean refereeing his April 23 light heavyweight championship rematch with Jon Jones . The NAC noted his complaint but ultimately stuck to its guns and kept Dean appointed as the third man in the cage. Cormier’s complaint was unsuccessful, but it wasn’t a failure. A fighter exercising his agency as an athlete ought to be applauded, and frankly, Cormier’s contemporaries should be eager to take a chapter out of his book. “DC” claims that in the latter stages of his January 2015 bout with Jones, Dean allowed the then-champion Jones to stall and didn’t heed Cormier’s prefight warnings to watch for some of Jones’ questionable tactics. Cormier didn’t make a particularly compelling case; rhetorically, in the interest of persuasion, he would have been better off demonizing Jones as an unrepentant eye-poking cheat, arguing that Dean repeatedly missed these fouls and that as an athlete, he was profoundly uncomfortable with Dean’s assignment.

Patricky Freire Not Interested in Guillard Bout: ‘His Name is Not as Valuable Anymore’

In the weeks leading up to Bellator 149 , Patricky Freire and Melvin Guillard went back and forth at one another in interviews and on social media. The only problem? Guillard was fighting Derek Campos , not Freire, on Feb. 19 in Houston. Campos provided a long-lasting reminder of that fact by knocking out “The Young Assassin” 32 seconds into round two of their encounter at the Toyota Center that night. Not only was it Guillard’s third straight loss, but it also appears to have brought an end to a feud that was just picking up steam. “It’s not a fight that makes sense for me anymore. I wanted to fight Melvin before when the timing was right. Now he’s coming from three losses in a row. His name is not as valuable anymore,” Freire told “I’m always looking for the biggest challenge and the biggest names, the fights that are going to take me to the top, and he’s not one of those anymore.” Instead, Freire, who has won five of his last seven fights — including a brutal knockout of Ryan Couture in January — has his sights set on the top of the division.

Nate Diaz: Conor McGregor would have been 'weeded out' fighting the guys I fought

"I've been fighting since I was 18 and I'm 30 now. I have more fights than anyone in the UFC. I have 25 fights. Sometimes people pick and choose but I never picked and choose, I just fought everybody all the time. I've been fighting top 10, top 5 guys since my third or fourth fight in the UFC. So I've got 23 fights with top 10 contenders," Diaz explained when speaking to "FOX Sports Live."

38 The 10: UFC’s Top Rivalries

Red Sox vs. Yankees. North Carolina vs. Duke. Wilt Chamberlain vs. Bill Russell. Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier. The fabric of sport is woven with rivalries – opponents whose frequent encounters and hostile history has a way of elevating each game, each series, each fight into something bigger. On Saturday, April 23 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, the most fierce rivalry currently raging on in the UFC will reach a boiling point as Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones step into the Octagon for a second time. This time around, however, it will be Cormier entering last, carrying the UFC light heavyweight title and Jones playing the role of challenger. It’s with that in mind that we look back at some of the greatest rivalries in UFC history. DANIEL CORMIER VS. JON JONES With these two readying to renew acquaintances in 720 hours (not that we’re counting), kicking off this list with the light heavyweight rivals only makes sense. Cormier and Jones have been clear about their dislike for one another from Jump Street and it stems mostly from outside the cage incidents, starting with a flippant comment made by Jones while he was on the way up that rubbed the two-time Olympian the wrong way.

UFC Planning to Renew ‘Fight for the Troops’ Series in 2016

For the first time in three years, the Ultimate Fighting Championship will host a “Fight for the Troops” event. The news was revealed in a press release announcing the Las Vegas-based promotion’s renewed partnership with Harley-Davidson, an agreement that includes extensive military ties. "As a core sponsor since 2007, Harley has played a vital role in the growth of our sport, as our audiences align perfectly with riding enthusiasts and fight fans,” UFC Executive Vice President of Global Marketing Partnerships Mike Mossholder said in a release. “Two pillar programs of our new partnership surround two passionate initiatives for both brands: A military program that provides benefits to both active and non-active military personnel, as well as first responders and Harley riders socializing at their local dealerships to watch UFC Pay-Per-View events.” A date and location for this year’s “Fight for the Troops” event was not revealed. The UFC debuted the series in 2008 at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, N.C. with a card that saw Josh Koscheck knock out Yoshiyuki Yoshida in the first round in the evening’s main event.

Nate Diaz wants something even bigger than a title fight

"I think that title thing's a fairytale," Diaz said on "UFC Tonight". "All these guys are like 'I want the belt, I want to be the champion' but the best fighters in the world are getting paid the best money. That belt thing, as far as I'm concerned, is a fairytale. That might piss a lot of people off, but money talks. If the best fighters aren't getting the most money then why are they getting paid that money for?"

Postal Connections: MMA Legal in NYC, McGregor-Diaz 2

Tuesday was a big day for the sport of mixed martial arts. When New York became the last state to legalize MMA competition, the final domino fell in a long hard fight waged by many people -- some long forgotten -- who put in the time and effort to see that a sport they so loved would be recognized and regulated in a professional manner. The Ultimate Fighting Championship and their deep pockets deserve a whole lot of credit, but I will always look back with fondness when I think of the people who were showing up at commission meetings in California long before it was ever legalized here on the left coast. The standards they came up with were adopted by New Jersey in September 2000 and became the basis of the “unified rules” that are in place across the globe today. This fight really goes back to the 90s and without all the tireless work put in, there would have never been a foundation for the UFC to prosper. Let’s all say a big thank you to all who helped make this day happen. Without further ado, let’s jump into this week’s questions.

"I think it just kind of made them look ignorant with their comments and they're reaching as far as they possibly can to stop this from happening for whatever reason.
