MMA: Dodson added to June 7 UFC card

John Dodson, the popular flyweight from Moriarty, has been added to the June 7 UFC “Fight Night” card scheduled for Tingley Coliseum. The UFC made the announcement Wednesday. Dodson (15-6), nicknamed “The Magician,” is scheduled to face Arizonan John Moraga (14-2) in a rematch of a December 2010 fight won by Dodson via unanimous decision. As previously announced, the June 7 main event matches lightweights Benson Henderson (20-3) and Rustam Khabilov (17-1). Khabilov trains at Albuquerque’s Jackson-Winkeljohn MMA, as does Dodson. A welterweight fight between Bobby Voelker (24-11) and Lance Benoist (6-2) also has been earmarked for the card. Later Wednesday, a bantamweight fight between Yaotzin Mesa (20-9) and Sergio Pettis (10-1) was added. The card is UFC’s first in the Albuquerque area. Tickets are scheduled to go on sale April 18. The Dodson-Moraga fight like will have a major positive impact for the winner. Both fighters have lost to UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson, and both fighters would like nothing more to get another shot at “Mighty Mouse.

Video: Junior dos Santos flips out during soccer match, trashes his own living room

Save it for the Octagon! Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos is passionate about soccer -- or futbol to all you non-yanks -- and gets really excited when his favorite team wins. Unfortunately, he also gets really upset when they lose! The good news is, he doesn't smash his fancy-shmancy Samsung television, because that would make for an awkward relationship with his new sponsor. Hopefully one of those high-definition screens will air his UFC 173 co-main event against Stipe Miocic ( details ), which "Cigano" plans to use as the first step back into title contention. Too bad it's not a pillow fight, as he looks to have some serious cotton-crushing skills.

Luke Barnatt meets Sean Strickland in battle of unbeatens at UFC Fight Night 41

Barnatt earlier this month kept his unbeaten record intact when he ruined the UFC debut of Mats Nilsson at UFC Fight Night 37 in London. Barnatt electrified his home country fans in England with a head kick and follow-up punches in the first round. The “TUF 17″ veteran now has back-to-back stoppages in the UFC after a submission of Andrew Craig this past October in Manchester.

Henderson's Knockout of Shogun Rua in Third Round: UFC Fight Night 38 - RevLabs | Dan Hendo Henderson Exclusive Blog

Sunday night in Natal, Brazil set the stage for the second meeting between Shogun Rua and Dan Henderson. Shogun was looking for revenge after his loss three years ago in the “Fight of the Year” in San Jose, CA. After what seemed to be punches taken by Hendo reminiscent of those given by Vitor Belfort, Hendo was able to fight back and keep his composure. Initially, Hendo seemed to take a more cautious approach and took a few hard hits, but eventually he came out swinging in the third round to land devastating blows to Shogun’s nose. The fight was then stopped by the referee after Hendo took advantage of his dazed opponent and unleashed strikes to finish him off. Check out the recap video from FOX Sports.

Shogun Rua to undergo surgery for broken nose Wednesday

"He will have surgery today," Rua's manager Eduardo Alonso told MMAFighting.com. "There’s no timetable (for his return to training) right now, he will take a week off to rest. He will be cleared to walk again then, and we’ll go from there."

Frank Mir taking time off, but spared from UFC cut

The Las Vegas native is the longest-running consecutively tenured UFC fighter, having made his octagon debut with a submission win over Roberto Traven at UFC 34 in Nov. 2001, just months into Zuffa's ownership of the promotion. Since that time, he's gone 14-9 including a heavyweight championship reign in 2004 and an interim crown four years later.

He's no 'FBI agent,' but Michael Bisping curious about Vitor Belfort's drug test

The title hopeful also explains why he should get a shot at the belt if victorious – and why he’s more deserving than Belfort. Belfort, of course, was lined up to fight champ Chris Weidman at UFC 173, but following a recent ban on testosterone-replacement therapy, the Brazilian was replaced by Lyoto Machida. However, Bisping finds it peculiar that Belfort hasn’t released the results of a recent pre-fight drug test ( which Belfort’s lawyer called “not relevant” ), which was conducted while Belfort was on TRT.

UFC 171 medical suspensions: Carlos Condit draws indefinite term

Alexander Gustafsson: I'll take another fight in case of Jones-Teixeira rematch

“I’d probably fight someone else, then,” Gustafsson on Tuesday told MMAjunkie Radio. “I’m a fighter and I want to fight. Basically, if Jones beats Teixeira, I want that title shot right away. If he doesn’t win (and they give him a rematch), then I’ll have to look at other possibilities. But I’m fighting whoever they gave me. That’s just the way I am.”

Rousimar Palhares: Nobody wants to go to the ground against me

"Is he going to fight on the ground with me? I don’t know. But I hope he does [laughs]," Palhares told MMAFighting.com. "I don’t think he has anything else to do. His fights always end on the ground. It’s hard to say because I don’t know what he’s planning to do, but usually nobody wants to go to the ground against me. Let’s see if he’s going or not."

Carlos Condit to go undergo surgery on Friday, return timetable TBD

Condit's injury occurred in the second round of his fight, when he was kicked in the left leg but pivoted on his right, causing the latter leg to give out. He immediately fell to the ground and the fight was stopped. Prior to that, however, he had grimaced in pain during a takedown in an apparent precursor to the injury.

EA SPORTS, UFC collaborate for stunning next-generation video game title

The UFC has released several video game titles with other developers in the past, and even EA SPORTS has tried its hand at an independently titled game in 2010. But now that the two industry-leading brands have merged together for an MMA game designed exclusively for next-gen consoles (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One), fans should expect the most lifelike combat experience yet when “EA SPORTS UFC” hits retailers later this year.

Ahead of Metamoris 3, Eddie Bravo's crusade against the gi marches on

The reason it hasn't been there is because of the point system. Now, we have Metamoris, submission only, the perfect format and boom, Metamoris 3. It has a pretty significant rematch in the world of jiu-jitsu. None of us are world champions or anything, we haven't grappled competitively in over 10 years. Still, it's the most-hyped event ever. It sold out in five hours. It's getting a lot of hype. For whatever the reason this event is so big, whatever it is - I'm not even sure, I can't even tell you - this is our opportunity to take advantage of it and really put on the best show possible. That really is the most important thing in the long run for the entire Brazilian jiu-jitsu community, is that me and Royler go after each other and we put on as beautiful a display of jiu-jitsu as possible. That's the most important thing.

James McSweeney vs. Chris Lokteff among 'ONE FC 15: Rise of Heroes' additions

McSweeney, a semifinalist on “The Ultimate Fighter 10″ who ultimately went 1-2 in the UFC, has won six of his past eight MMA fights, including a May 2013 TKO of former Strikeforce fighter Dion Staring. Most recently, the 33-year-old rebounded from a loss to Paul Buentello with a November submission victory over Stefan Traunmuller (8-2-1 at the time) in Slovenia.

UFC releases names of TUF 19 Cast - spoiler free version

Spolier Alert: Some months ago, Fox Sports released a trailer for the upcoming season of the Ultimate Fighter. In this trailer, they revealed not only the names of the fighters who made it past the elimination round, but what teams those fighters would be on. It only flashed up for a few seconds in the video, but it was there. The video ran for a couple of weeks, right up until shortly after it and it's contents were published here on Bloody Elbow. As the video has been pulled I can't link you directly to that, but if you don't care about spoilers at all, and want to see who very likely (who knows they could have got it all wrong) made it through to the house, click this link . Anderson Silva says Cris Cyborg has a 90% chance of beating Ronda Rousey

I believe this fight needs to happen. The Ronda is a great fighter. But Cris has 90 % chance of winning the round. She trains hard and has all the features and appropriate techniques to win the round. This fight needs to happen, because Dana White owes it to the audience; the UFC.

22
Cody McKenzie released from the UFC, looking to WSOF for fights

Cody McKenzie , whatever his faults has to be considered one of the oddest fighters to grace the UFC Octagon in recent history. As a fellow Alaskan, I can say with a fair amount of nostalgia that he embodies the crazy, risk taking, unpolished personality that often builds in the kind of isolation that being 1000 miles from the rest of the world provides. His UFC fights were often awkward displays of aggression, his frame giving fighters the assurance that they could run right over him, only to get choked out, or nearly so in the process. While he may have looked the part, he was hardly the worst fighter in the UFC... but boy did he look the part.

Bloody Elbow Roundtable: Who should headline UFC 173?

Fraser Coffeen: I don't like being Mr. Negativity, but I think our somewhat jokey answers here says a lot about the real answer, which is: there is no good answer. Cormier vs. Gus? Chael vs. Wandy? Diaz vs. Lawler? All are OK match-ups, but none feels like a MAIN EVENT. And I think that speaks volumes to the issues surrounding the UFC's marketing machine right now. There are very few seriously marketable fighters out there at the moment - hell, not even all of the champions are particularly marketable (I love Johnson and Barao, but they don't draw). When you have such a small number of actual main event level drawing talent, you have to dig deep to find a compelling headliner, and with the current injuries and bookings, I just don't see a good option.

BE Analytics: How Does Ground Control Help MMA Fighters Win?

Did you notice what's going on with back control? Extra idle time on your opponent's back doesn't help you complete submissions. This is because having the back is very different from other ground control positions. Far and away, the most submission attempts per minute of control are rear naked chokes from the back - more than double that of any other submission type from any other ground control position. The first and second charts tell us that activity is the crucial feature of back control in MMA. Submissions with back control tend to come from making a lot of attempts and setting those attempts up with strikes, as opposed to being more patient and picking your spots.

Yves Jabouin vs. Mike Easton slated for UFC 174 in Vancouver

The 34-year-old looks to right the ship against Easton, who’s in a must-win situation. The 30-year-old Alliance MMA member was on an eight-fight winning streak, which included victories in his first three UFC fights, before his current three-fight skid. The decision losses came to 135-pound notables Pickett, Raphael Assuncao and T.J. Dillashaw.

Kovalev vs Agnew boxing preview, live streaming results, discussion, live fight online coverage March 29

Kovalev vs. Agnew is one of those clear A side vs B side fights, with the spotlight firmly on Kovalev. The undefeated Kovalev is a very impressive 23-0-1. He's only gone the distance twice, never having fought past the 8th round. He had an amazing 2013, going 4-0, all KOs, none going past the 4th round. HBO has been building him up, but this is the first time he's the sole star attraction of the card. They clearly have a lot of faith in Kovalev, hoping that he can join the likes of Gennady Golovkin as one of the sport's next big stars. Opponent Agnew is also undefeated, but that's a bit misleading given his caliber of opposition - only 2 of his last 6 opponents have come into the fight with winning records. He really should not pose a threat to Kovalev here, and if he does, that doesn't speak well for the future of HBO's Kovalev project.

WSOF champ Steve Carl on Palhares: 'Scariest guy I've ever gotten in the cage with'

“I didn’t sit there and pretend like in seven or eight weeks, I’m going to become this world-class leglocker and I’m going to have this defense to stop a guy that’s been doing it his entire life,” Carl said. “I don’t want to go into this fight only worried about a heel hook. After failed drug test, UFC's Dennis Siver points to supplement, new trainer

So prior to UFC 168 I had to hire an external personal trainer and nutrionist to support me with making weight. The nutrionist recommended me a new diet method from the US, which had been successfully used by the stars. Thereupon I asked, if I, as a competitive professional athlete, could safely use this supplement. This was confirmed to me. Then I committed the fatal mistake of not making sure through the UFC if individual substances from the supplement could have effects on the drug tests.

Roy Nelson: TRT ban just put fighters using it 'back in the closet'

The TRT ban in Nevada appeared to be a popular decision at the time and one that fighters like Nelson would seemingly applaud because it helps rid the sport of a treatment often seen as a loophole for fighters to use a performance enhancer legally as long as it was done under the guidance of an athletic commission. Now that the ban is in effect, no fighter can use TRT while competing in Nevada, but ever the pragmatist, Nelson isn't sure the new policy will actually have the desired effect of eliminating synthetic testosterone use in the sport.
