Opinion: The Need to Be Twice as Smart to Be Twice as Cheap

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * I've written in the past about sign-of-the-times moments in mixed martial arts -- moments when a major blockbuster story breaks or when a constellation of hot-button issues emerges simultaneously. When you are embedded in these moments, whether consciously trying to philosophize or not, you suddenly take a step back and say to yourself, “So, this is how MMA is right now.” Consider this last week one of those weeks. Since the news broke in July that WME-IMG was acquiring the UFC for about $4 billion, it has been a story that soaks and saturates almost every other MMA story; there aren't too many MMA topics that aren't directly or indirectly impacted by the world's biggest promotion having new corporate overlords with a vastly different outlook on business and this sport. So far, we've witnessed the UFC's “new normal” in budget cuts, as WME-IMG looks to slash company payroll from $55 million to $27 million.

Jorge Linares Dominates Anthony Crolla to Retain Lightweight Title in Huge Rematch

Five years ago, Jorge Linares was the victim of back-to-back knockout losses. The Venezuelan was no longer champion and in typical fashion, the fickle boxing world cast him into the gutter, a forgotten fighter. But like the greatest fighters in the world, Linares picked himself up off the proverbial canvas and crawled back to the drawing board. Ever since Sergio Thompson knocked him out in the second, Linares never looked back. “Golden Boy” hasn’t lost since, having won 10 consecutive battles coming into Saturday’s battle with new rival Anthony Crolla. Along the way, Linares blew Javier Prieto out of the water to win the vacant WBA lightweight crown and has defended it three times, including a close but unanimous decision win over Crolla last September. Like Linares, Crolla was looking to rebound from a heartbreaking loss. The Manchester native fought bravely in front of his rabid hometown fans in Manchester Arena in one of 2016’s finest fights, but Linares was hair better and got the judges’ verdict. Crolla promised that he’d reverse the decision when they locked horns in the same arena on Showtime in their highly-anticipated rematch, but Linares continued his magnificent dominance over the division; Crolla was in way over his head.

Cedric Doumbe Dominates Yoann Kongolo to Retain Welterweight Crown at Glory 39

He lost to Yoann Kongolo in 2014 at JuraFight and then again in 2015 at Glory 22. But on Saturday in the main event of Glory 39 in Brussels, Cedric Doumbe was able to retain his Glory welterweight title by out-pointing his rival via unanimous decision, finally getting that proverbial monkey off his back. Kongolo (64-9, 46 KOs) rocked the champ late in the first with a left hook and nearly scored a knockdown. But aside from that short burst of firepower, the Cameroonian was too slick and defensive for Kongolo to land anything worthwhile throughout the rest of the fight. Doumbe moved perfectly and his head movement allowed him to avoid nearly everything the Swiss fighter launched his way. Once he seized complete control of the action, Doumbe repeatedly mocked Kongolo and showboated around the ring. The antics frustrated Kongolo, but he was unable to do anything about them down the stretch. In the end, Doumbe was awarded a surprisingly lopsided unanimous verdict. One ringside official favored Doumbe with a 48-47 score, while the other four all had it a shutout at 50-45. Doumbe (66-4-1, 39 KOs) retained his title impressively and called out Murthel Groenhart after his triumph.

By The Numbers: Anthony Johnson

Anthony Johnson ranks high on any reputable list involving MMA’s most frightening fighters. An imposing physical specimen with thunderous knockout power and the requisite mean streak to go along with it, “Rumble” has posted victories in four different weight classes since he turned professional in August 2006, roughly two years after he won a national championship as an amateur wrestler at Lassen Community College in California. After stops at welterweight, middleweight and heavyweight, Johnson settled in at 205 pounds, forever altering the trajectory of his career. Johnson finds himself on a three-fight winning streak as he prepares for his latest test, a rematch with undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight titleholder Daniel Cormier in the UFC 210 main event on April 8 in Buffalo, New York. There, he will attempt to join Cormier, Jon Jones , Mauricio Rua , Lyoto Machida , Rashad Evans , Forrest Griffin , Quinton Jackson , Chuck Liddell , Randy Couture , Vitor Belfort , Tito Ortiz and Frank Shamrock as the only men to have captured UFC gold at 205 pounds.

Opinion: The Complicated Decline of B.J. Penn

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced on Wednesday night’s edition of “UFC Tonight” that B.J. Penn , apparently undaunted by his second round technical knockout loss to Yair Rodriguez in January, will return on the promotion’s June 25 card in Oklahoma City. The fight, originally booked for UFC 199 last June, was derailed by an injury to Siver, and an alleged unauthorized use of intravenous infusions by Penn killed his replacement fight against Cole Miller . Meanwhile, the UFC was sold, and when Penn was finally ready again, the surprisingly appropriate Siver and Miller fights went to the wayside to make room for Rodriguez. We don’t know what would have happened if Penn stayed on UFC 199, but we can be pretty sure that he would have done better than he did two months ago. What’s changed since then is that we finally got a definitive answer to something that’s been puzzling the mixed martial arts world for a while: Is Penn shot? Until the Rodriguez fight, there were always excuses you could give as to how he’s looked since his last win in 2010.

MMA Mileposts: Will Brooks

He was born Willie Love Brooks on Oct. 8, 1986 in Chicago. Now 30, “Ill” Will Brooks finds himself in the heart of his competitive prime as one of the top lightweight fighters in mixed martial arts. He transitioned from football to MMA when a knee injury ended his playing career at Harper College, the same school in Palatine, Illinois, that happened to give rise to Ultimate Fighting Championship veterans Mike Rio and Clay Guida . Brooks will carry a stellar 19-2 record into his UFC 210 showdown with Brazilian submission ace Charles Oliveira on April 8 at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York. This is the path he took to get there: JANUARY 22, 2011 Brooks made his professional MMA debut at Xtreme Fighting Organization 38 in Woodstock, Illinois, and needed just 2:09 to put away J.R. Hines with punches. He went on to win his first eight bouts -- seven of them were finishes -- on the regional circuit, his march toward bigger and better things capped by a three-round unanimous decision over Drew Dober . Brooks’ performances netted the desired result: a look from talent evaluators in major organizations.

Cormier Lists The Only Condition He’ll Fight Jon Jones Under … And There’s Only One!

“We’d all have to all have some discussions,” Cormier said. “I’m not going to fight Jones just on some card. I’ll put it out there: Jon and I will not fight in the co-main event to anyone but Conor McGregor. Right? That’s the only way that makes sense, right? So there’s the problem.
