Santiago Ponzinibbio, Kamaru Usman Slated for UFC Fight Night Chile Main Event

Two of the welterweight division’s rising contenders will square off in the main event when the Ultimate Fighting Championship travels to Chile for the first time on May 19. According to multiple reports, Santiago Ponzinibbio and Kamaru Usman will meet in the UFC Fight Night 129 headliner at Movistar Arena in Santiago, Chile. MMAFighting.com first brought word of the bout, which is expected to be announced soon by the UFC. A native of La Plata, Argentina, Ponzinibbio will carry a six-fight winning streak into the matchup with Usman. The 31-year-old American Top Team representative last appeared at UFC on Fox 26, where he earned a unanimous decision over Mike Perry . “Gente Boa” owns KO/TKO wins over Gunnar Nelson , Court McGee and Andreas Stahl during his current streak. Usman, meanwhile, has won seven straight Octagon appearances and 11 fights in a row overall. “The Nigerian Nightmare” made his first appearance of 2018 at UFC Fight Night 124, where he outpointed Emil Meek on Jan. 14.

Tyron Woodley: MMA Training for Floyd Mayweather Could Begin This Week

Recently, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley mentioned that he would be interested in training Floyd Mayweather for a potential foray into mixed martial arts. Now, it appears that things could be getting more serious. The main key, according Woodley, is getting Mayweather’s takedown defense up to par. “I talked to Floyd yesterday actually,” Woodley told TMZ Sports over the weekend. “He’s in Miami right now and we’re coordinating dates on training. I think, obviously, his striking is bar-none some of the best we’ve ever seen in the sport,” said Woodley. “Anybody who has the ability to evade a punch in a fraction of a second, I think, with proper repetition and proper drilling can avoid a takedown wrestling attempt. So that’s obviously gonna be the primary goal, to equip him with the tools to not get taken down and if he happens to get taken down, how to keep his cool and how to get his butt back up to his feet and get back where he needs to be.” The two fighters are planning strategy sessions and could even transition to training in the very near future. “We’re beginning the process of setting up the timing.

With 'championship language' in new UFC contract, Dustin Poirier ready for title run

“I don’t know how many contracts I’ve had with the UFC, but this is my first contract with championship language in it,” Poirier said. “We have a plan figured out for when I win the belt, and it’s in my contract. This is my first contract with that in it, and I’ve had a lot of contracts with the UFC. This is the closest I’ve ever come to being a world champion, and everything is happening like clockwork like it’s supposed to.”

Bibiano Fernandes Extends Winning Streak With Split Decision Victory in Bangkok | MMAWeekly.com

Nguyen looked hurt and who knows what might have happened if Fernandes had thrown some follow-up strikes instead of working for a takedown? Up until that point, the fight had been something of a chess match with the Brazilian landing some low kicks, but struggling to score with takedowns.

Breen: Twitter and Its Potential Dumbing and Numbing Effect on MMA

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Twitter on Wednesday marked the 12-year anniversary of its founding. I don’t think I need to explain to you that this social media platform has transformed global communication, culture and, more specific to our purposes here, MMA to a profound degree. How fitting that Tuesday’s hottest story in the sport was a frivolous four-way bitch-fest between Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight Kamaru Usman , his manager Ali Abdelaziz and fellow 170-pound contenders Darren Till and Jorge Masvidal . The most avoided fighter in the ufc today @USMAN84kg everyone’s talking shit but I’m talking to the matchmakers daily - masvidol said no, Magny said no, Covington said no, thompson injured, Darren Till saying he wants to fight but no contracts coming through pic.twitter.com/nA1fNI7R59 — Ali Abdelaziz (@AliAbdelaziz00) March 20, 2018 I’m sorry mate, truth is I’m scared of you! Darren Till vs. Stephen Thompson in the Works for UFC Fight Night 130 Headliner

Darren Till appears to have an opponent for UFC Fight Night 130 , as he will square off against former welterweight title challenger Stephen Thompson . Multiple outlets have confirmed that bout agreements are in place for the main event matchup following an initial report from BJPenn.com . The Las Vegas-based promotion has not formally announced the contest. UFC Fight Night 130 takes place at Echo Arena in Liverpool, England on May 27 and will air on Fox Sports 1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass. Till is coming off the biggest victory of his career to date at UFC Fight Night 118 this past October, when he stopped Donald Cerrone via technical knockout 4:20 into the opening round of their bout. The 25-year-old owns a 16-0-1 career mark that includes 10 triumphs via KO/TKO and two by way of submission. After twice coming up short in a pair of title bouts against Tyron Woodley — once by majority draw and once in a majority decision defeat — “Wonderboy” returned to the win column with a three-round verdict over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 217 in November.

UFC 223's Artem Lobov says sub-.500 record represents 'a true fighter, a real fighter'

“My record, for example, it represents a tough road,” Lobov told MMAjunkie Radio. “It represents a guy that was willing to fight when no one else would. When you ask to go to some other country and fight their local best guy, and you know the judges are going to be his friend and the referee is going to be his coach, the head of commission guys is probably going to be his relative or something like that, and you’re asked to do that for 100 Euros.

Mike Santiago vs. Dan Ige Added to UFC 225 Lineup in Chicago on June 9

A featherweight showdown between Mike Santiago and Dan Ige has been added to the UFC 225 bill. The Las Vegas-based promotion recently announced the matchup. UFC 225 takes place at the United Center in Chicago on June 9 and is headlined by a middleweight championship bout between Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero . Santiago got his start in the Octagon thanks to a first-round knockout of Mark Cherico on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series 7 on Aug. 22. The 28-year-old Illinois native is still looking for his first promotional triumph after falling to Zabit Magomedsharipov and Mads Burneel in his first two appearances. Ige, meanwhile, got his opportunity on the basis of a submission of Luis Gomez on the third edition of the Contender Series. He made his Octagon debut at UFC 220, where he dropped a unanimous decision to Julio Arce .

UFC’s Jon Anik Discusses How he Treats Every Event Like it’s His Last

Ultimate Fighting Championship lead commentator Jon Anik has talked about his mindset going into each event and how he treats every production like it’s his last. The 39 year-old joined the UFC in 2011 as lead commentator on non-pay-per-view events and spent the next six years playing understudy to the much more experienced Mike Goldberg. In July 2016, the UFC was sold to a group led by WME–IMG for a rumoured $4.2 billion. As is the norm with new owners, they started making their own changes and in 2017 announced they were parting ways with Goldberg, who had over a decade of experience with the company. This decision left Anik as the lead play-by-play commentator. What happened to Goldberg highlighted the harsh reality of show business and how quickly things can change in something as volatile as the UFC. Anik recently talked with MMAJunkie.com on his mindset as a commentator and acknowledged he, too, could be let go next without reason: “I think that it aids performance. I treat every show like it could be my last.” As the lead play-by-play commentator, Anik has his hands full not only making sure his commentary is on point, but to ensure he creates chemistry with the many talented co-commentators he is paired with.

Anthony Pettis: CM Punk One of the Hardest Workers at Roufusport

When Phil Brooks -- better known as “CM Punk” – inked a deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship in December 2014, fight fans were left scratching their head as to why he decided to leave a multi-million dollar contract with World Wrestling Entertainment to enter the Octagon as an untested mixed martial artist at the ripe old age of 36. Many believed it was a publicity stunt, although Punk assured fans he was serious in his attempt at making it as a fighter. After numerous delays due to injury, Punk finally made his debut on Sept. 10, 2016 against the talented young up and comer Micky Gall, who exposed Punk’s many weaknesses and inexperience in the complex and brutal world of MMA. Punk lost the bout at 2:14 of the opening frame via rear-naked choke. One of Punk’s teammates at Roufusport is former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis . Pettis recently appeared on The MMA Hour and discussed Punk’s progression since his first bout and why he thinks he’ll have better success in his next outing. “I see him every day, man.

Kritsada Kongsrichai's ONE Championship 70 win overturned due to this illegal suplex

“After careful video review of the fight under multiple angles, it has been deemed that an illegal suplex was utilized,” Sityodtong wrote. “At ONE Championship, all variations of suplexes are illegal and any attempt or intent results in an automatic disqualification. Robin Catalan will now be awarded the victory, and his win bonus. It will also be ruled a loss via DQ for Kritsada Kongsrichai and his official fight record. As a fellow lifelong martial artist, I fully understand that no athlete wants to win or lose under the cloud of a DQ. However, as the leader of ONE Championship, I am here to ensure that safety is the #1 priority at all times for all of our athletes.”

How Jon Anik has stayed sharp as UFC commentator despite less-than-ideal circumstances

“They all do have their different styles, and certainly for a lot of broadcasters, it would be nice to just be with the same one or two guys every time you call fights so you can build on the chemistry,” Anik said. “I’m not going to lie to you and say that when you work with Paul Felder and then I don’t work with him again for six months, it’s not that there isn’t a challenge there. But I don’t know that I would have it any other way.”
