9 Questions for Chase Gormley
Former
Titan Fighting Championship heavyweight titleholder Chase
Gormley will face perhaps the most important test of his career
when he climbs into the cage to meet
Pride Fighting Championships veteran Sergei
Kharitonov at
Bellator 175 this Friday at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont,
Illinois.
Gormley enters the three-round clash on the heels of consecutive
split decision victories over Joey
Beltran and Bobby
Brents . The 33-year-old Torrance, California, native has won
seven of his past eight bouts. Meanwhile, Kharitonov finds himself
on the rebound following a shocking 16-second knockout loss to
Javy
Ayala at Bellator 163 on Nov. 4. The setback snapped a
five-fight winning streak for the Russian paratrooper.
In this exclusive interview with Sherdog.com, Gormley touches on
his forthcoming battle with Kharitonov, his ability to overcome
adversity and the possibility of fighting for the vacant Bellator
MMA heavyweight championship:
Sherdog.com: What are your thoughts on this matchup with
Kharitonov?
Gormley: It’s a great opportunity for me because he’s a great

The Bottom Line: Scott Coker’s Savvy Gamble

It’s hard to believe that Scott
Coker is now approaching the completion of his third full year
as president of Bellator
MMA . Coker took over Bellator with a lot of fanfare, stemming
from his long and successful run as the head of Strikeforce .
Former CEO Bjorn
Rebney had not accrued a lot of goodwill and there was plenty
of hope that Coker would improve Bellator’s fortunes.
Unfortunately, the returns thus far have on balance not been
inspiring. For all the time Coker has had, there hasn’t been a
feeling of positive momentum building.
Bellator under Coker has spent plenty of money. Perhaps his most
positive contribution has been influencing Viacom to open its
wallet, just like Eric Bischoff helped to create a pro wrestling
boom two decades ago by inspiring Ted Turner to take out his
checkbook. There’s clearly a higher production for budget and
talent.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - And the Feeling's Right
This may not be a massive update, but it is certainly notable for
the women and
Invicta Fighting Championships 22 is the focal point.
With no Ultimate Fighting Championship card and no Bellator MMA
bill, the weekend past may not seem formative for these lists, but
for several women in the official Sherdog.com rankings, Invicta's
most recent outing in Kansas City, Missouri, was a critical event,
not just to gain a victory but to right a past wrong.
In her second official Invicta bantamweight title defense in
November, Tonya
Evinger was temporarily robbed by referee Mike
England , who essentially handed the bout to Evinger's
challenger Yana
Kunitskaya courtesy of negligent officiating. After securing a
no-contest in the bout and getting her belt back, the 35-year-old
veteran got the chance to correct the errors of history at Invicta
22 and did just that, choking out Kunitskaya in the second round to
retain her strap and overwrite the inopportune fluke four months
past.
With her win, “Triple Threat” climbs to the eighth spot in our
women's bantamweight rankings.

UFC Flyweight Matheus Nicolau Accepts 1-Year Suspension for Anti-Doping Violation
Matheus
Nicolau Pereira has accepted a one-year suspension from USADA
for a positive drug test stemming from an out-of-competition urine
test on Oct. 13.
USADA announced the sanction in a statement on Wednesday. Nicolau
tested positive for anastrozole, which is listed in the category of
hormone and metabolic modulators and is prohibited according to
WADA code. Nicolau’s suspension is retroactive to the date of his
positive test, meaning he will be able to return to active
competition on Oct. 14, 2017.
While anastrozole is primarily used to help treat breast cancer, it
can also help to maximize the effect testosterone on the body while
limiting the amount of estrogen secreted.
The 24-year-old UFC flyweight was scheduled to face Yuta Sasaki
at UFC Fight Night 100 in Sao Paul this past November but was
pulled from the card after the failed drug test was revealed
approximately two weeks before the fight.
Nicolau began his Octagon tenure with consecutive triumphs over

MMA’s Greats of the States | South Dakota: Brock Lesnar
Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe,
bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of
their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or
state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States
are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly
is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series,
the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of
all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily
need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need
to be associated with it.
***
No one can deny the long-lasting impact Brock
Lesnar had on the sport of mixed martial arts in a short period
of time. A two-time NCAA All-American at the University of
Minnesota, the Webster, South Dakota, native won a national
championship in 2000 before becoming a World Wrestling
Entertainment superstar. He turned to MMA in 2007, debuting with a
first-round technical knockout of Olympic silver medalist Min Soo Kim
under the K-1 banner.

Michael Bisping: If GSP Isn’t Ready by Summer, Romero Gets Middleweight Title Shot
Michael
Bisping apparently isn’t willing to wait too long for a big
money showdown with the returning Georges St.

During a press conference earlier this month to announce the
middleweight championship bout between Bisping and St. Pierre, UFC
President Dana White admitted that he was hoping to get the bout
booked for the July 8 pay-per-view event during International Fight

out that St. Pierre must clear multiple hurdles to be ready,
including making himself available during a four-month window for
the USADA drug testing pool.
“July 8 in Las Vegas, International Fight Week, is the date and the
event that we are targeting, but [UFC President] Dana (White)

Hand Gun Choke Counter to One of the Worst Situations in Half Guard (Recorded Live)
For more half gyard goodness, check out ► http://bjjcanvas.com/half-guard-trickery This is simple a combination of ideas from different sources. Case in point: A few days ago, someone sent me Neil Melanson's video on the hand gun choke because they had seen some similarities to the concepts I stressed for the loop choke. And once I started playing with it, I saw it too. It really is the loop choke in no-gi form, and a lot of the same principles apply. Also I'm big proponent of the hip tilt/john wayne/giggler sweep. I use all over the place, and we just a few small adjustments it can also be used in this smash half guard situation. BJJ lesson: Bernardo Faria teaches half-guard sweep dubbed "last chance" by @gallerr
Bernardo Faria is an expert when it comes to the half-guard. The Alliance black-belt has developed a well-rounded bottom game, with sweeps and reversals, capable of beating every type of passer. In this video lesson, he teaches a half-guard sweep he named the "last chance." This move is a Hail Mary a fighter can use when there's no other resort to avoid having their guard passed.

Conor McGregor Won't Be Exiting UFC Anytime Soon | MMAWeekly.com
McGregor’s purse for UFC 205 in New York wasn’t disclosed, but is rumored to have been $5 million. That would make sense since it would be reflective of the record-setting magnitude of the event. In addition to his purse, McGregor, as a champion, also gets a cut of pay-per-view revenue, which likely rocketed his UFC 205 payday into the $20 million neighborhood.

Bellator LW Champ Michael Chandler Interested in Facing Opponents Out of His Division
Bellator MMA lightweight champion Michael
Chandler recognizes the task in front of him heading into his
next 155-pound title defense.
Chandler will put his belt on the line against the relatively
unheralded Brent
Primus in a featured bout at the California-based promotion’s
pay-per-view
event in New York on June 24. While Chandler is the known
commodity, a two-time champion with a string of big fights under
his belt, he once was in a position similar to that of Primus
( online sportsbooks ).
The former University of Missouri wrestling champion capitalized on
his opportunity, as he submitted then lightweight king Eddie
Alvarez in the fourth round of their bout at Bellator 58 in
November 2011. It is a fight that still ranks among the best in
promotion history and established Chandler as a star and perennial
contender. While the 30-year-old champion has interests beyond the
lightweight division, he must first get past Primus, a Sports
Lab-trained fighter with a 7-0 career mark.
“I’m in this sport to get the biggest fights I possibly can,”
Chandler said during a press conference in New York on Tuesday.

Bellator MMA Promises ‘Consistent and Regular’ Pay-Per-View Schedule Moving Forward
Bellator MMA will venture into the pay-per-view realm for the
second time ever on June 24, but expect the California-based
promotion to further establish itself on the platform once owned by
the UFC in the coming months.
While Bellator NYC “Sonnen vs. Silva” isn’t the beginning of a
monthly pay-per-view itinerary for the company, there are already
plans in place to hold similar events down the road.
“This is a new line of business for us. This is the first of many
that we’re going to be doing,” said Spike Senior Vice President of
Sports & Specials Jon Slusser at a press conference in New York
on Tuesday. [Bellator President Scott Coker] did not put together a
single card and hope that it works or see if it works. This is a
new revenue stream for us and will allow us in time to continue to
build up Bellator and put on these amazing fights.
“I don’t know if we’re talking about the schedule yet, but there
will be consistent and regular pay-per views moving forward as we
enter this new line of business.”
Bellator NYC “Silva vs. Sonnen” will take place at Madison Square
Garden in New York and is headlined by a light heavyweight showdown
between Chael Sonnen
and Wanderlei
Silva .

This Bellator NYC card will be headlined by a light heavyweight showdown between long-time rivals Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva. Knockout Artist David Lemieux to Fight Marcos Reyes on Canelo-Chavez Jr. Card
It didn’t take long for Canadian knockout machine David Lemieux to
land his next fight. Fresh off a sensational win on HBO, Lemieux
has already signed up to fight Marcos Reyes on the undercard of the
massive Saul “Canelo” Alvarez versus Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. event
in Las Vegas on May 6.
Lemieux, one of the hardest punchers in the sport of boxing, scored
the front-runner for knockout of the year a few weeks back when he
flattened Curtis Stevens. Lemieux obliterated Stevens with a single
shot to the jaw during an exchange and Stevens, not exactly a
slouch in power department himself, lay motionless on the canvas
under the bottom rope for a few minutes before finally coming
to.
Lemieux (37-3, 33 KOs) has been on a tear since losing to Gennady
Golovkin in October 2015. The former IBF middleweight champion has
coveted another crack at “GGG” ever since and he’s been laying
waste to his opposition every time out and the boxing world has
taken notice.
“I'm thankful to have the opportunity of being part of this
event during the Cinco de Mayo celebrations,” Lemieux said.

War Machine at Peace with Conviction, Apologizes to Christy Mack | MMAWeekly.com
“Well, that didn’t go very well, now did it? Would you believe me, though, if I said that I have nothing but joy inside, even now as I am sure to receive some type of life sentence? It’s true. Often times I have heard men in neighboring cells go to their cells and cry after receiving such news, but how can I? How can I cry tears of sorrow over the circumstances responsible for saving my soul? These circumstances are what has transformed me into a real man, how can I disrespect god by weeping over them? How much is a soul worth? Is a life sentence too high a price? Not at all, I gladly trade this false life in for the real one to come; I have been nothing but blessed by all of this. Now, if only I could somehow receive Christy’s forgiveness… And if only I could one day hear that she too had been saved! That would remove every last bit of tarnish from this tragedy. CHRISTY: I am sorry for the man that I was, I am sorry for hurting you. One day, when enough time has passed, and when your wounds are fully healed, I hope that you will write to me, or, perhaps, even visit me, so that I can apologize completely, and so that I can tell you about all that I have found in regard to god.
