Cris Cyborg Destroys Yana Kunitskaya and Now She's Waiting on Amanda Nunes |

Cyborg vs. Nunes was already previously rumored until the UFC needed a short notice main event to fill the card on Saturday night. Nunes is now expected to face Raquel Pennington at UFC 224 in May but if she can get through that fight with a win, it’s entirely possible a champion vs. champion super fight could be on tap later this year.

Matches to Make After UFC 222

If Frankie Edgar thought it was safer to try Brian Ortega on the feet, he was mistaken. The unbeaten Ortega became the first man to finish “The Answer,” as he wiped out the notoriously durable Edgar with punches in the opening round of their UFC 222 co-main event on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It came to a surprising and dramatic conclusion 3:25 into Round 1, leaving Ortega as the unquestioned No. 1 contender to the Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight throne. All appeared to be going according to plan for Edgar, who used crafty footwork and a decided speed advantage to unleash multi-punch volleys to the body and head. Ortega never took his eye off the target. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt cracked Edgar with an exquisite stepping elbow in close quarters, the impact scrambling the New Jersey native’s synapses while permanently altering the course of their confrontation. Ortega cut off escape routes and then lifted his counterpart off his feet with a devastating right uppercut. Edgar hit the deck in a semi-conscious state and could not withstand the follow-up hammerfists that necessitated the stoppage.

Hector Lombard plans appeal of disqualification loss at UFC 222

Immediately after the disqualification, UFC officials and the crowd sided with Dollaway, who was taken away on a stretcher after he was ruled unfit to continue. Lombard didn’t get a chance to talk to the commission or the UFC before he was escorted backstage, and he deferred his fight-protest to his manager. UFC President Dana White backed Smith’s call at the post-event press conference.

Dana White: Holloway vs. Ortega to be made 'immediately' when Holloway recovers from injury - Fighters Only

Ortega became the first man to ever hand the durable Frankie Edgar a stoppage loss on Saturday night. Edgar originally had a title fight scheduled with Holloway before the champion was ruled out with injury. Californian Ortega stepped in to face Edgar on late notice and rightfully takes the New Jersey native’s place as the number one contender following his knockout win.

After title win, Bellator champ Darrion Caldwell had a blunt message for UFC bantamweights

“There’s not that much respect here for guys with Bellator,” said Caldwell, who’s No. 9 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA bantamweight rankings . “Everyone thinks the UFC is the NFL of MMA. Whenever you’ve got UFC guys – like a T.J. Dillashaw and Cody Garbrandt – as a champion, they’re always going to be like, ‘You’re not going to be better than this guy because he’s in the UFC.’

By the Numbers: UFC 222

One result seemed practically inevitable. The other was a little more difficult to see coming. As expected, Cristiane Justino retained her women’s featherweight title in typically dominant fashion in the UFC 222 2 headliner, scoring a first-round technical knockout victory over former Invicta Fighting Championships bantamweight queen Yana Kunitskaya . “Cyborg” has now successfully defended her crown twice, this time on approximately three week’s notice. Meanwhile, Brian Ortega announced himself as the featherweight division’s new No. 1 contender in resounding fashion in the evening’s co-main event, knocking out Frankie Edgar with an uppercut 4:44 into the opening frame. A showdown with reigning champion Max Holloway is undoubtedly in Ortega’s future. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 222, with statistics courtesy of Related » UFC 222 Bonuses & Awards 28: Significant strikes by which Justino outlanded Kunitskaya in the abbreviated title bout, which ended 3:25 into round one. “Cyborg” landed 33 of her 43 attempts, a 73 percent success rate.

Confident Alexander Hernandez: UFC 222 knockout of Beneil Dariush went just as planned

“It’s exactly what we planned, it’s exactly what we saw, and we conquered,” Hernandez said after the fight. “None of this was overwhelming. None of this seemed out of place. None of this seemed undeserved. The goal was never to enter the UFC, to win a fight in the UFC – the goal since Day One has been to own this organization. And that’s exactly what we’re on our way to do.

After Victorious Octagon Debut, Mackenzie Dern Targets UFC 224 in Brazil for Next Bout

Mackenzie Dern is an Arizona native, but her Brazilian roots run deep. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under her father, Wellington “Megaton” Dias, Dern was successful in her highly-anticipated Octagon debut, as she garnered a hard-fought split verdict over Ashley Yoder in a 115-pound bout at UFC 222 . After the win, Dern set her sights on an appearance in Brazil. “I can’t wait to get back out there and fight again,” Dern said. “I am hoping to fight in Rio at UFC 224. Brazil is one of my homes and it would be an honor to fight for UFC in Rio.” UFC 224 takes place at Juenesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro on May 12 and will see Amanda Nunes defend her bantamweight crown against Raquel Pennington . The card also includes a pair of high-profile middleweight matchups, as Ronaldo Souza meets Kelvin Gastelum , while Lyoto Machida squares off against Vitor Belfort . Dern still has a long ways to go to match the reputations of some of the main players on the UFC 224 lineup, but she did show an ability to persevere through some adversity in her initial Octagon foray.

UFC 222 Bonuses: Ortega, O’Malley, Soukhamthath, Hernandez Earn $50K Checks

Brian Ortega , Sean O’Malley, Andre Soukhamthath and Alexander Hernandez received $50,000 post-fight bonuses for their efforts at UFC 222 . Ortega received a “Performance of the Night” award for his first-round knockout of Frankie Edgar in featherweight title eliminator bout in Saturday’s co-main event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. “T-City” stopped Edgar in his tracks with a standing elbow and sent his foe to the canvas with a massive uppercut moments later. Referee Jason Herzog quickly stepped in to intervene at the 4:44 mark of the frame, making Ortega the first man to finish Edgar in MMA. Elsewhere, O’Malley and Soukhamthath garnered “Fight of the Night” honors for their featured bantamweight tilt. O’Malley appeared to be in total control early, as he rocked his adversary in round one and built up a solid lead on the scorecards after two rounds. However, the tone changed when O’Malley hurt his leg in the final frame, but “Sugar” was able to withstand Soukhamthath’s final assault to hold on for a unanimous decision triumph.

UFC 222 Medical Suspensions: Sean O’Malley Among Six Fighters Facing 6-Month Layoff

Rising bantamweight prospect Sean O’Malley had the most visible injury of anyone on the UFC 222 card, so it’s no surprise that he is facing a lengthy medical suspension. The MMA Lab product earned a unanimous decision over Andre Soukhamthath in a featured bout at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, but he was clearly hobbled by a leg injury in the third stanza, so much so that he did his post-fight interview on his back in the Octagon. O’Malley must have his right foot and ankle cleared by an orthopedic doctor or he will be suspended until Aug. 31. At a minimum, “Sugar” Sean is out until April 3 with no contact until March 25. The Nevada Athletic Commission released a full list of medical suspensions from the event on Monday. Five other fighters from the card are also looking at potential six-month layoffs pending doctor clearance: Cat Zingano (left ankle), C.B. Dollaway (left ankle), Hector Lombard (right foot), Bryan Caraway (left foot, right wrist), Adam Milstead (left foot). Frankie Edgar issues statement on tough UFC 222 loss to Brian Ortega |

If things had gone according to the original plan, Frankie Edgar would have challenged Max Holloway for the UFC featherweight title in the main event of last Saturday’s UFC 222 card. When Holloway was forced out of this fight with an injury, however, Edgar accepted a late-notice battle with surging contender Brian Ortega, putting his well-deserved title shot on the line in an incredibly high-risk move.

23 Trading Shots: Was justice served in Hector Lombard's DQ loss at UFC 222?

By now, we’ve all seen it. Lombard and C.B. Dollaway are going at it on Saturday’s UFC 222 prelims. Lombard is committing to a strategy of countering Dollaway’s kicks with punches. Then Dollaway lands a body kick right at the horn to end the first round, and Lombard fires off a two-punch combo, culminating in a blistering left hand right as referee Mark Smith yells “stop” for the second time (via YouTube ):

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - No Doubt

A collective shudder made its way down the spine of the Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight division following Brian Ortega ’s latest performance. Already one of the sport’s most dangerous submission artists, Ortega showed off his developing standup skills in a first-round knockout of future hall of famer Frankie Edgar in the UFC 222 headliner on March 3 in Las Vegas. “T-City” froze Edgar with a stepping elbow, hunted the finish and then lifted the former lightweight champion off his feet with a devastating right uppercut. Two hammerfists later, Ortega became the first man to ever stop “The Answer” and cemented himself as the clear No. 1 contender at 145 pounds. The win moves the Rener Gracie protégé into the second spot in our latest divisional rankings and puts him in prime position to challenge Max Holloway for the undisputed UFC featherweight championship later this year. Ortega was not the only up-and-coming star to shine at UFC 222. Undefeated Nova Uniao export Ketlen Vieira moved to 10-0 with a split decision over Cat Zingano , utilizing takedowns and a suffocating top game to spoil the return of the former title contender.
