Conor McGregor Plans to Defend UFC Featherweight Title Next, Eyes Spot on UFC 200

Conor McGregor ’s loss to Nate Diaz in the UFC 196 main event ended any notion of him making a run at welterweight gold, but the “Notorious” Irishman still has a shiny belt in his possession. McGregor, who captured the featherweight title with a 13-second knockout of Jose Aldo at UFC 194, seemed keen on the idea of returning to 145 pounds to defend his crown in the aftermath of Saturday’s upset loss. “I know there’s a lot of people celebrating this in the featherweight division. There are many people celebrating another man’s victory. It’s something I cannot understand, how somebody not involved can celebrate another man’s victory,” McGregor said. “At the end of the day, I am the featherweight champion. I feel it is right to go back down and remind them of what I achieved and what I’ve done to that division.” Among those celebrating McGregor’s demise at the hands of Diaz was Aldo, who took to Twitter to revel in his rival’s defeat. “See ya at [ UFC 200 ],” Aldo wrote. “Your fairy tale is over. Undefeated Darrion Caldwell Chokes Joe Warren Unconscious in Bellator 151 Blowout

Darrion Caldwell was indeed ready for primetime. Caldwell staked his claim as the No. 1 contender in Bellator MMA ’s bantamweight division, as he put Joe Warren to sleep with a first-round rear-naked choke in the Bellator 151 headliner on Friday at the Winstar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma. The end came 3:23 into round one. A former two-division Bellator champion, Warren (13-5, 11-4 Bellator) was a non-factor. Caldwell (9-0, 6-0 Bellator) executed a pair of takedowns and a spectacular belly-to-back suplex, sandwiching ground-and-pound between the techniques. The 28-year-old advanced to Warren’s back with little resistance, slipped in the choke and waited for referee Dan Miragliotta to intervene. In the co-main event, Fernando Gonzalez climbed another rung on the welterweight ladder with a split decision against former Resurrection Fighting Alliance champion Gilbert Smith . Scores were 29-28 and 29-28 for Gonzalez, 29-28 for Smith. The back-and-forth affair was as competitive as the scorecards indicated.

UFC 196: By the Numbers

Chaos -- and the rear-naked choke -- reigned supreme at UFC 196 . Nate Diaz put a quick end to Conor McGregor ’s welterweight ambitions in the evening’s headliner, wobbling the Irishman on the feet before submitting the 145-pound king with a rear-naked choke 4:12 into round two at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Meanwhile, Miesha Tate displayed her trademark resilience in the co-main event, as she rallied to submit Holly Holm in the fifth round with the same maneuver to capture the women’s bantamweight strap. While Tate struggled to compete with Holm at range, she put the Jackson-Wink MMA standout in peril both times the fight hit the ground, something longtime Tate rival Ronda Rousey wasn’t able to do at UFC 193. With such a crazy night comes plenty of interesting facts and figures. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 196, with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com. 11: Finishes in UFC competition for Nate Diaz , tying him for the fifth most in UFC history 9: Submission victories for Diaz, moving him past Frank Mir and Charles Oliveira and into sole possession of second place all-time in UFC history.

Matches to Make After UFC 196

Ambition got the best of Conor McGregor . The Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight titleholder moved up two divisions, ran into Nate Diaz and submitted to a second-round rear-naked choke in the UFC 196 headliner on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. McGregor asked out 4:12 into round two, his dreams of multi-division dominance on hold for now. Diaz withstood the Irishman on the feet, as he absorbed a series of straight lefts and right uppercuts that left him battered and bloodied. He seemed to enjoy the experience. McGregor ran out of steam and ideas in the second round, where “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 5 winner wobbled him with a straight left, swarmed with punches and prompted him to dive on an ill-advised takedown. Diaz bailed on a guillotine, achieved full mount and moved to the back when McGregor rolled in desperation. Soon after, the rear-naked choke was set, his trap expertly sprung. The upset raises Diaz’s profile to unseen heights and leaves McGregor with far more questions than answers.

Trading Shots: With Conor McGregor's loss, another UFC star goes down

I agree that a loss for the UFC’s preferred stars isn’t necessarily a loss for the UFC, but that’s mainly because a) fans love that aspect of the sport, and also b) when a star gets beat up it should, theoretically, create a new star. Why doesn’t the victor get the spoils in MMA? How should a promoter balance the need to highlight some fighters more than others, while also not completely neglecting who wins and loses?

Picture: Miesha Tate-Holly Holm Scorecard from UFC 196

Miesha Tate left nothing to chance in the UFC 196 co-headliner, as she submitted Holly Holm at 3:10 of the fifth round to claim the women’s bantamweight championship. That sense of urgency paid dividends, because “Cupcake” was behind 38-37 on all three cageside judges’ scorecards heading into the final frame. Depending on how the final two minutes played out, Tate could have been on the verge of losing a narrow decision. Also noteworthy was that judges Chris Lee, Marcos Rosales and Glenn Trowbridge all gave Tate a 10-8 second round. In that period, Tate grounded Holm early and nearly submitted her with a rear-naked choke before the horn sounded. Holm, meanwhile, won rounds one, three and four by identical 10-9 counts.
