'Mask' documentary on TapouT founder debuts April 3, filmmaker vents on Reebok

Razak: That’s a tough question. He wasn’t alive for the FOX deal. He would have loved the fact that UFC was on free TV and free cable, that you can watch a fight Sunday morning in your bed and Saturday night for free. I think he would have loved it. I think the Reebok deal wouldn’t have it. Him knowing about that Reebok deal, knowing that TapouT wasn’t a part of that … because if he was alive, there would be no Reebok deal. I’m telling you 100 percent there would be no Reebok deal. He was incredibly tight with (UFC President) Dana (White) and (former UFC CEO) Lorenzo (Fertitta). That’s why they put his name on the cage. I believe if there would have been a singular deal for a clothing company, it would have been Charles. No way in hell would there have been a Reebok deal. Charles loved fighters. He would pay fighters more than he paid himself. He would have not have done a raw deal for these fighters. He would have made sure they were paid correctly. If they voiced their concerns, he would have addressed it 100 percent. He would have been disgusted by this Reebok deal, and I think he won’t get any rest – if there is something like going into the light, he ain’t there, because he’d be turning in his grave.

5 Things You Might Not Know About Matt Mitrione

At 6-foot-3 and 255 pounds, Matt Mitrione is a force in any mixed martial arts competition, whether in the Ultimate Fighting Championship or Bellator MMA . “Meathead” may seem like a happy-go-lucky kind of guy -- he usually sings along to his entrance music -- but he gets down to business when the bell rings. Mitrione took a majority decision from Roy Nelson at Bellator 194 on Feb. 16, advancing to the 2018 Bellator heavyweight grand prix semifinals. While Mitrione awaits his next opponent in his bid to capture the vacant Bellator heavyweight crown, here are five things you might not know about him: 1. He is an athlete at heart. Born in Bloomington, Illinois, and raised in nearby Springfield, Mitrione was hyperactive when he was a child. Shotokan karate kept him busy, while good genes allowed him to become a multi-sport athlete during his stay at Sacred Heart-Griffin High School. Mitrione engaged in diving, track and field, swimming and football. He was recognized as an honorable mention All-American by USA Today and earned All-State honors during his senior year at Springfield Southeast High School after posting 117 tackles and recording 19 sacks.

This Month’s MMA Birthdays: Mackenzie Dern Celebrates No. 25

Perhaps the most-talked-about women’s MMA prospect since Ronda Rousey , two-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Mackenzie Dern has only enhanced the hype through six professional appearances. She will celebrate her 25th birthday on March 24. Dern made her Ultimate Fighting Championship debut in the featured UFC 222 prelim, overcame some adversity and walked away with a split decision over Ashley Yoder at T-Mobile Arena on March 3 in Las Vegas. The win bumped her record to 6-0. A gold medalist at the 2015 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships, Dern hangs her hat at the powerhouse MMA Lab camp in Glendale, Arizona, where she trains alongside former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson and undefeated bantamweight prospect Sean O’Malley, among others. She submitted three of her first five opponents prior to joining the UFC roster, having cut her teeth inside the Legacy Fighting Championship , Legacy Fighting Alliance and Invicta Fighting Championships promotions. Kevin Lee explains why he's fighting Edson Barboza, not Nick Diaz or Eddie Alvarez

“The Nate Diaz fight was there,” Lee (16-3 MMA, 9-3 UFC) told reporters backstage at this past Saturday’s UFC 222, which took place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. “I thought it would have been a good fight. I would have wanted to take that one. Nate’s a tough fighter, and a lot of people are real high on him. But the man doesn’t want to fight.”

Video: Conor McGregor Stars in New Burger King Commercial

Conor McGregor can sell a fight, but can he sell a chicken sandwich? Burger King seems to believe he can. The UFC superstar appears in the latest Burger King commercial, where the fast food chain’s own “King” delivers a spicy crispy chicken sandwich to the “Notorious” one on his private jet. “From one king to another, this packs a real kick,” McGregor tells the “King” after taking a bite of the sandwich. While McGregor continues to rake in endorsement money, the date for his UFC return remains unclear. The SBG Ireland standout has not officially been stripped of the lightweight title he won in November 2016, but that day could be drawing near. Interim champion Tony Ferguson will square off against Khabib Nurmagomedov in the UFC 223 headliner on April 7, and promotion president Dana White has vaguely stated that the bout is for the “real” belt. McGregor has not seen action since losing to Floyd Mayweather via 10th round technical knockout in a boxing match on Aug. 26. He did, however, claim that he offered to step in against Frankie Edgar at UFC 222, an offer which White later confirmed.

Tony Martin vs. Keita Nakamura added to UFC Fight Night 128 in Atlantic City

Martin will be looking to rebound after a split-decision loss to Olivier Aubin-Mercier at UFC Fight Night 116 in Pittsburgh this past September. The loss snapped a three-fight winning streak against Felipe Oliveiri, Alex White and Johnny Case. Martin fought at welterweight early in his career before moving to lightweight.

Tim Means says UFC paid his win bonus for UFC-Belem split-decision loss to Moraes

It seems as if some members of the UFC brass weren’t too sure of the scoring against Means, either. Fight purses weren’t released for UFC Fight Night 125. But for Means’ decision win over Alex Garcia at UFC Fight Night 112 in Oklahoma two fights prior, he made $39,000 to show and another $39,000 for his win. So it stands to reason the extra check from the UFC was not at all an inconsequential one.

John McCarthy believes Jon Jones, points to tainted-supplement problem

“I love Jon Jones,” McCarthy said. “I say he’s the greatest MMA fighter I’ve ever seen. But this is where the problem comes forward. I don’t personally believe Jon took some type of steroid before fighting Daniel Cormier. … But Jon is personally responsible as a professional athlete under contract with the UFC … with everything he puts in his body. And I believe that Jon is taking – or allowing things that are not known or not tested – and because some other trace element is in there that makes you pop, you’re responsible for it.

Brian Ortega gets call from Dana White: UFC title shot vs. Max Holloway is next

“I just saw him,” White told MMAjunkie at the UFC 222 post-event news conference at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. “He came on ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ as one of the coaches, and he looks good. He’s walking good. We’ve got to see what his doctor says. When he’s cleared and he’s ready to fight, we’ll make that fight immediately.”

The Hit List: NFL Players Who Have Competed in MMA

Aside from those who are already trained in combat sports like wrestling and other martial arts, it seems like a safe bet that a number of NFL players could find success if they crossed over to MMA. They push their bodies to withstand the physical toll of an entire season through repeated impacts, lifting weights and cardiovascular conditioning. Strip them of their pads and helmets, and they are still true gladiators in terms of physicality and mental toughness. Herschel Walker remains perhaps the best known former NFL player to make the jump. He was a three-time NCAA All-American at the University of Georgia, where he led the Bulldogs to a national championship in 1980 and won a Heisman Trophy in 1982. Walker went on to play 12 seasons in the NFL with the Cowboys, Vikings, Eagles and Giants. A longtime martial arts practitioner, he fought twice under the Strikeforce banner despite debuting at the age of 47: He stopped Greg Nagy with punches in January 2010 and did the same to Scott Carson a year later. Here are some of th

Retirement Not in the Immediate Future for Former UFC Champ Holly Holm

When Holly Holm sent Ronda Rousey crashing to the canvas at UFC 193 back in November 2015 in Sydney, Australia, the former boxing world champion was on top of the world. Not many people expected her to win that fight. Rousey had started knocking out her opponents and seemed to be getting more dominant with each bout. Yet against all the odds, Holm shut down the champion with laser-like punches and finished her off with an earth shuddering head kick. After the matchup, many believed Holm would be the champion in the division for the foreseeable future. At the time, she was undefeated in mixed martial arts (10-0) and had taken out the No. 1 pound-for-pound female fighter in the world. Now at 36 years of age, “The Preacher’s Daughter” may be contemplating retirement. After all, she’s achieved more in combat sports than most could dream of. She has won boxing world titles in three different weight divisions and has held titles in two MMA promotions after capturing the inaugural Legacy Fighting Championship women's bantamweight title in April 2014 and the Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight title in 2015.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - No Doubt

A collective shudder made its way down the spine of the Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight division following Brian Ortega ’s latest performance. Already one of the sport’s most dangerous submission artists, Ortega showed off his developing standup skills in a first-round knockout of future hall of famer Frankie Edgar in the UFC 222 headliner on March 3 in Las Vegas. “T-City” froze Edgar with a stepping elbow, hunted the finish and then lifted the former lightweight champion off his feet with a devastating right uppercut. Two hammerfists later, Ortega became the first man to ever stop “The Answer” and cemented himself as the clear No. 1 contender at 145 pounds. The win moves the Rener Gracie protégé into the second spot in our latest divisional rankings and puts him in prime position to challenge Max Holloway for the undisputed UFC featherweight championship later this year. Ortega was not the only up-and-coming star to shine at UFC 222. Undefeated Nova Uniao export Ketlen Vieira moved to 10-0 with a split decision over Cat Zingano , utilizing takedowns and a suffocating top game to spoil the return of the former title contender.

As you'd expect, Frankie Edgar all class in defeat after UFC 222

You're beyond Blessed in your life if you've had the privilege to meet 1 great person in your life. I'm talking about someone who impacts just thousands around him and changes and impacts your life for the better. It been a absolute miracle in my almost 50 years to have had 2 of these amazing men in my life. My father in law Pino and my little brother @frankieedgar. Even though I'm a lot older than Frankie, he has taught me way more lessons in life than I could have ever taught him. Besides being an incredible son, brother, father, husband, friend, general, mentor, champion, teammate and example to millions, I can't thank him enough for being the most incredible example to my son for the past 13 years. So hard in these times to find a great role model for your kids these days and I've been Blessed beyond belief to have had this man be an example to what is dearest to me. Forget this fight stuff there's way bigger things in life and it's a GUARANTEE FE will be back stronger than ever!! Congratulations to Brian Ortega and his amazing team. Brian's awesome example to kids.

UFC 222 Medical Suspensions: Sean O’Malley Among Six Fighters Facing 6-Month Layoff

Rising bantamweight prospect Sean O’Malley had the most visible injury of anyone on the UFC 222 card, so it’s no surprise that he is facing a lengthy medical suspension. The MMA Lab product earned a unanimous decision over Andre Soukhamthath in a featured bout at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, but he was clearly hobbled by a leg injury in the third stanza, so much so that he did his post-fight interview on his back in the Octagon. O’Malley must have his right foot and ankle cleared by an orthopedic doctor or he will be suspended until Aug. 31. At a minimum, “Sugar” Sean is out until April 3 with no contact until March 25. The Nevada Athletic Commission released a full list of medical suspensions from the event on Monday. Five other fighters from the card are also looking at potential six-month layoffs pending doctor clearance: Cat Zingano (left ankle), C.B. Dollaway (left ankle), Hector Lombard (right foot), Bryan Caraway (left foot, right wrist), Adam Milstead (left foot). UFC 222 Medical Suspensions: Yana Kunitskaya : Suspended until April 3 with no contact until March 25.

Hector Lombard has a very good reason he no longer gambles at the casino

A decade ago, the former PRIDE fighter signed a deal with Bellator. Then an upstart promotion, Bellator inked Lombard – who sported a stellar 18-2-1 record and eventually became the organization’s middleweight champion – to a hefty contract. But, as he admitted, he was younger and a bit dumber, and well, you probably know where this is going.
