Cody Garbrandt vs. T.J. Dillashaw Confirmed for UFC 213 in Las Vegas

Cody Garbrandt will defend his bantamweight crown against former Team Alpha Male training partner T.J. Dillashaw at UFC 213 . UFC President Dana White confirmed the pairing during the UFC 210 post-fight press conference on Saturday. Garbrandt and Dillashaw are opposing coaches on Season 25 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” which premieres April 19 on Fox Sports 1. “Obviously Cody and T.J. are on that card, so yeah, we’ll see how that goes,” White said. UFC 213 takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on July 8. A headliner has not been announced for the card, although White is hopeful that he can book Michael Bisping ’s middleweight title defense against Georges St. Pierre for that spot. Garbrandt claimed the bantamweight throne with a five-round verdict over Dominick Cruz at UFC 207 on Dec. 30. “No Love’ is 11-0 as a pro, with six of those triumphs coming in the Octagon. Dillashaw, meanwhile, has earned back-to-back triumphs over John Lineker and Raphael Assuncao after dropping the 135-pound belt to Cruz in a split decision at UFC Fight Night 81.

Anthony Johnson's Team Wants Cut of Daniel Cormier's Purse for Controversial Weigh-in | MMAWeekly.com

If the appeal falls in his favor, however, he would net a significant addition to his bank account. Cormier’s last disclosed fight purse was $500,000 for his fight with Anderson Silva at UFC 200 last summer. Cormier was likely paid as much or more for UFC 210. A 20-percent penalty in his favor could mean an additional $100,000 or more to his bottom line.

Beating the Odds: UFC 210

As soon as Will Brooks hit the mat, Charles Oliveira stepped on the accelerator. Oliveira dispatched the former Bellator MMA champion with a standing rear-naked choke in their UFC 210 “Cormier vs. Johnson 2” lightweight showcase on Saturday at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York. Brooks -- a -235 favorite, per BetDSI.com -- conceded defeat 2:30 into Round 1, as he suffered the first submission loss of his 22-fight career. One of the most feared grapplers in the sport, Oliveira (+185) executed two takedowns and attached himself to the American Top Team export’s back when he rose to his feet and left the door ajar. From there, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt snaked his arms in place underneath Brooks’ chin, tightened his squeeze and elicited the tapout ( online sportsbooks ). “I trained a lot to be able to execute that move,” said Oliveira, who pocketed a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his efforts. “I’ve done this submission before in the UFC and I heard my corners yelling for me to hold the position and not to give it up, and he tapped. Everybody said that I have a lot of pressure on me for this fight to win but it’s not real, and I felt very comfortable.

Urijah Faber to Be Enshrined in UFC Hall of Fame’s ‘Modern Era’ Wing This Summer

The recently retired Urijah Faber will be part of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Hall of Fame class in 2017. It was announced during the UFC 210 pay-per-view broadcast that “The California Kid” will be inducted into the “Modern Era” wing during a ceremony on July 6 during International Fight Week in Las Vegas. The “Modern Era” wing is for all fighters who made their professional debut after Nov. 17, 2000, when the Unified Rules of mixed martial arts were implemented. B.J. Penn and Forrest Griffin are currently the only two fighters in the category. “As a fighter, you don’t take time to sit back and smell the roses when you are going through your career,” Faber said in a release. “You’re always looking to the future, the next fight, the next camp, the next training session. To have UFC tell you that what you contributed and accomplished over the course of your career is worthy of being remembered for years to come is humbling. I’m so honored. It’s crazy that for so much of my career everyone said I was naïve to think I’d ever get the chance to fight in UFC, and now I’m going to be in the UFC Hall of Fame.

Patrick Cote Announces Retirement Following Loss to Thiago Alves at UFC 210

After 15 years and 34 professional fights, Patrick Cote is calling it a career. “The Predator” left his gloves in the Octagon following his bout with Thiago Alves at UFC 210 at the Keybank Arena in Buffalo, N.Y., on Saturday. Cote lost a unanimous decision to Alves, his second consecutive defeat within the promotion. The result of Saturday’s fight had no impact on Cote’s decision, however. “That was the plan since the beginning. Win or lose, that would be my last fight,” Cote said. “It’s been an amazing 15 years.” The 37-year-old Cote exits the sport with a 23-11 career mark. He began his UFC tenure at 185 pounds and challenged Anderson Silva for the middleweight title at UFC 90 in 2008. That bout ended 39 seconds into the third round when Cote suffered a knee injury. Cote went 10-10 during his UFC career and took notable wins over the likes of Ben Saunders , Joshua Burkman , Kyle Noke , Ricardo Almeida , Scott Smith and Kendall Grove , to name a few.

Make Believe Matchmaker - Post-UFC 210 Edition

Buffalo hosted what could be referred to as a wild event last night. We saw multiple retirements in the cage, and one full-fledged debacle in the co-main event. Opinion: The Most MMA Event of the Year

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Event of the year it was not, but by the end of 2017, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a card more MMA than UFC 210 on Saturday in Buffalo, New York. Let’s take a minute to unpack that idea first, since saying that an MMA event was “so MMA” -- and the fact that almost everyone immediately knows what that means -- is telling. It hints at the bizarre, sometimes horrible and often frustrating things we expect from this sport. It’s a particular feeling in the MMA community, somewhere between victimhood and resignation, over-salted with well-earned cynicism. When hyped fights fall through last-minute due to freak injury, a United States Anti-Doping Agency flag for “dick pills” or someone slipping in the bathtub during weigh-ins, or when impossibly bad scorecards turn up after a fight, the most accurate, most succinct way to describe that feeling is to say it’s “peak MMA.” Fighting is a weird and crazy sport, so we expect weird and crazy things to happen.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - One Surprise, One Upset, Three Exits

One upset and one surprise retirement has added up to three notable top-10 exits in this edition of the official Sherdog.com mixed martial arts rankings. In the UFC 210 main event on April 8 in Buffalo, New York, light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier retained his strap in his rematch with power-punching challenger Anthony Johnson , submitting him a round earlier than he did 22 months ago. While Cormier cinching a rear-naked choke on “Rumble” was not exactly a surprise, what followed was, as the 33-year-old Johnson suddenly announced his retirement. After bouncing around four weight classes, Johnson finally settled at 205 pounds in late 2012; and since then, no man other than Cormier has beaten him. The Dublin, Georgia, native made his debut in these rankings back in April 2014 following his win over Phil Davis . In wake of his retirement, perhaps the biggest hitter in MMA history and our previously second-ranked light heavyweight exits our top 10. With Johnson hanging up the gloves, we welcome an old, familiar face back to the 205-pound rankings: Hello, again, Mauricio Rua ( online betting ).

UFC 210 Prelims: Myles Jury Makes Smashing Return, Routs Mike de la Torre in Buffalo

Myles Jury made up for lost time. In his first appearance since December 2015, Jury disposed of Mike de la Torre with first-round elbows and punches in the featured UFC 210 “Cormier vs. Johnson 2” prelim on Saturday at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York. De la Torre (14-7, 2-4 UFC) wilted 3:30 into Round 1. Juryy (16-2, 7-2 UFC) struck for a takedown inside the first 30 seconds, advanced to the back and fished for a rear-naked choke. He later forced de la Torre to go belly down, as he flattened out the MMA Lab export and unleashed elbows and punches. Blood was spilled, and Jury kept his foot on the gas until referee Dan Miragliotta had seen enough. The win snapped a two-fight losing streak for Jury ( online sportsbooks ). Usman (10-1, 5-0 UFC) swept the scorecards with 30-27, 30-26 and 30-26 marks from the judges.

Weidman Considering Appeal of Controversial UFC 210 Defeat, Seeks Rematch with Mousasi

In the aftermath of his disappointing defeat to Gegard Mousasi in the UFC 210 co-headliner, Chris Weidman was still at a loss. The middleweight bout ended in controversial fashion, as it was temporarily halted when Mousasi landed what referee Dan Miragliotta believed to be an illegal knee while Weidman had both hands on the canvas. Replays showed that Mousasi lifted Weidman’s hand off the mat while landing the knee, making it legal. Initially, Weidman was given a five-minute recovery period, but cageside physicians entered the Octagon and ruled that the Serra-Longo Fight Team product was unfit to continue. With that, Mousasi had his fifth consecutive victory. The former middleweight champion, meanwhile, was saddled with his third straight defeat and left to wonder what might have been. “I’m pretty frustrated. First off I don’t want to twist this thing up. I want to give Gegard respect. It was a good fight. It’s nothing to do with him,” Weidman said on Fox Sports 1. “At the end of the day, what was done is completely not right.

At current, it is not known whether Cormier will next defend his title against Manuwa, or against the returning Jones. Jones is currently serving the tail end of a suspension stemming from a failed drug test in July of 2016, which occurred in the buildup to a planned rematch with Cormier. He will be eligible to compete again this July, which makes his rematch with Cormier a likely headliner for July 8’s UFC 213 . That said, UFC President Dana White has been reluctant to acknowledge this possibility, so it is hard to say if it actually happens on that date.
