Hamdan is from the mountains of Pakistan. His face is worn with care. He paid $1,624 (£1,000) to a Pakistani recruiter who told him he would have a job with the UAE's largest construction firm, Arabtec, as "a carpenter in Dubai", earning between $217 and $300 a month. When he arrived in Dubai, he was placed in a vast industrial zone outside the city, where he learned he would be working six days a week on the "museum site" in Abu Dhabi, earning just $160 a month. Arabtec had already taken his passport and he was trapped. His only choice was to work for 10 months – 11 hours a day, with an extra two hours' travel time, to repay the agent before he could start to save anything for his family.

Round 3 – Been a good fight through two rounds. Scores could be anywhere. Omer comes out firing kicks. Alers shoots in for a takedown. He misses at first, but a second effort gets the action to the floor. Omer looking to scramble underneath, and he does finally get back to his feet. Alers has an underhook, but t’s Omer who transitions and starts looking for his own takedown. Omer with a few knees inside, but Alers spins him back against the cage. Alers lands a few knees and shoots on a takedown. Omer tries to catch him with a few elbows, but he’s taken to the canvas. Omer with an open guard. Both fighters seem exhausted after the quick pace to start. Alers postures up and punches. Omer looks to get his legs high, but time is ticking away. One minute left. Goddard decides to stand them up with a little more than 30 seconds left. Omer comes out energized and looking to throw. Get gets a takedown in the final few seconds, but MMAjunkie gives the round to Alers, 10-9, and awards him the fight 30-27. No score would surprise here, with a very close rounds throughout.
Beneil Dariush says he’s a top UFC lightweight, y’all just don’t know it yet
"I feel like a lot of people celebrate and they raise their hand and they shout. But they celebrate in relief, like that it's over. I'm fighting and I'm only going to be able to fight until, who knows, maybe until I'm in my late-30s. My celebration is the fight. Being inside that Octagon, those 15 minutes I get to go against my opponent, that's my celebration. That's my joy. After the fight, I'm happy, but the happiest I can possibly be is those 15 minutes."
Tyrone Spong: If I fully commit to MMA, of course I would want to be in the UFC
"If eventually I fully commit to only MMA, of course I want to be in the UFC because that's the highest league out there." Spong told Bloody Elbow. "But for now WSOF is treating me very well."
UFC anticipates quick return to Abu Dhabi, targeting 'The Ultimate Fighter' for Middle East
ABU DHABI – The UFC took four years to return to Abu Dhabi following its initial visit to the United Arab Emirates’ second most populous city, but the locale may soon become an annual destination.
No more revivals and resurrections for Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira after latest loss
I don’t know, but I hope he found some way to make his peace with the facts as they are rather than as he’d like them to be. Nogueira’s already had more revivals and resurrections than most aging heavyweights ever get, so it must be hard to believe that there are really no more rabbits left for him to pull out of his hat.
Cheaters Beware! UFC boss Dana White confirms promotion is drug testing 'the whole card from now on'
"Obviously, doing away with performance-enhancing drugs not only helps us run our business, but it also helps the fighters. If you can make sure you take a hard enough stance and you can keep these young, talented kids off these drugs, their careers are going to last longer. Once all the kids realize there is a level playing field, you have these guys paranoid, ‘I know this guy is using, I know he is, I have to fight this guy and he's on it, so maybe I should do it too' once we can eliminate all that it's going to make the sport a lot better for everybody, them and us."
But there is an unsung hero in all this, a person who truly helped launch Carano’s lip-biting career into the stratosphere and one who finally deserves his due credit. I’m talking about the Strikeforce cameraman who was given the simple assignment of filming Gina Carano sitting ringside and used the opportunity to forever cement his place in MMA History, of course. I don’t mean to overstate this, but the way he ever so slightly pushed in on Carano (phrasing) just in time for the lip bite is a moment of filmmaking history comparable to Spielberg’s dolly zoom shot in Jaws .
How to Watch Fight Night Abu Dhabi
Acclaimed MMA media members talk Fight Night Abu Dhabi and pick who they think will come out on top in the heavyweight headlining bout between Minotauro Nogueira and Roy Nelson.
TUF Talk Episode 13: Axe throwing rematches and Yeti souvenirs
Coach Kyle Noke from Australia admits that the Canadians definitely had the advantage when it came to experience, but he's still proud of his squad and the work they put in during the show. Now that the experience is behind him, Noke is ready to fight for his country at the finale when he takes on fellow coach Patrick Cote.
Roy Nelson, Clay Guida capture big wins at UFC Abu Dhabi
Going forward, the question will be whether that was his last time in the octagon. Dating back to 2008, Nogueira is just 3-5, and after going hist first 37 bouts without being finished, he's been stopped by either strikes or submission in all of those five defeats. Further, due mostly to injury, Nogueira (34-9-1, 1 no contest) has been able to fight only once in each of the last three years. Despite the relative inactivity and sporadic recent success, the heavyweight great still stood at No. 11 in the most recent rankings. His reputation precedes him, as Nelson explained when asked to rate where the finish ranked on his personal list of KO's.
UFC Fight Night 39 attendance pushes gate to $1.8 million
The UFC first visited Abu Dhabi for UFC 112 in 2010. The event aired on pay-per-view and featured two title fights as then-middleweight champion Anderson Silva defeated Thales Leites, and Frankie Edgar took the lightweight belt from B.J. Penn. That show drew an announced attendance of 11,008 and a live gate of $3.5 million.
Glory 15 fight preview: Light Heavyweight tournament with Tyrone Spong and Gokhan Saki
All that said, stopping Mourad Bouzidi is still a far cry from stopping Tyrone Spong, and Cavalari has his work cut out for him here. He will need to fight the fight of his life to win this. The obvious choice here is to see Spong use range and his variety of attacks to beat up Cavalari, slowly increasing the pressure until Cavalari's body can no longer keep up. And in all honesty, that's probably what will happen. But the path to a Cavalari victory is there. If you look at Spong's recent wins, you see dominating KOs. But you also see a fighter who can get hit. Michael Duut dropped Spong at Glory 9 - if Cavalari can land a shot, he has the power to make it count and perhaps end the fight.
The Weigh-in: UFC Fight Night 39, more
Alvarez: I think Kawajiri is going to do really well. He fought me in a bad fight [in 2008]. I felt when we were fighting he was definitely the more talented fighter at the time; I was just able to overwhelm him with conditioning and some attributes that I had. Talent-wise and skill-wise, Kawajiri is the real deal. He's not just the best Japanese fighter on the roster. If I had to predict, he's one of the best 145ers on the roster. I think he's going to be stronger than a lot of guys at that weight class; he has a hard overhand right and on top of that he's supremely confident in what he's doing. He's paid his dues and it's nice to see a guy like that doing well.
