Derrick Lewis Calls Out Roy Nelson for Heavyweight Bout at UFC 200

Derrick Lewis knows what he wants, and that’s a matchup with a fellow knockout artist at the UFC’s premiere event of 2016. Shortly after “The Black Beast” recorded a first-round knockout of former title challenger Gabriel Gonzaga in the UFC Fight Night Zagreb co-main event on Sunday -- his sixth knockout finish in the Octagon -- he set his sights on Roy Nelson , who has finished seven of his eight promotional triumphs by knockout or technical knockout. “I feel hungry after that victory. I feel really good. I appreciate my opponent and what he did in the fight. I’m hoping that I get to fight Roy Nelson in July at UFC 200 ,” he said. Why Nelson? Well, Lewis understands that MMA is an entertainment business, and a showdown with Nelson is exactly the type of fight that can raise Lewis’ profile. “It ain’t nothing personal or anything like that. I just feel like he’s going to bring a better fighter out of me. It’s a fan favorite fight,” Lewis said in an interview on Fox Sports 1. “I’m here for the promotion to sell tickets.

Ahead of UFC Fight Night 86, Junior Dos Santos knows in his heart he'll be champ again

“I was living in a not very good moment last time,” Dos Santos said. “Right now I’m living in a good moment because I’m feeling good, and I’m ready for this fight, and that’s what matters. I just want to show people that I’m still here, I’m still Junior Dos Santos, and I can still do really good things in the octagon. I’m going to show them everything I’ve got on Sunday night. Like I said, it’s going to be my first step back to the title shot. I feel inside my heart I’ll be the champion again. It doesn’t matter what happens. I’ll be the champion again.”

Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Rothwell vs. Dos Santos’

Perhaps Junior dos Santos has a little more left in the tank than some feared. The former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight titleholder ran circles around Ben Rothwell in the UFC Fight Night 86 main event, as he picked up a five-round unanimous decision on Sunday at Zagreb Arena in Zagreb, Croatia. All three judges awarded dos Santos all five rounds, giving the Brazilian a clean 50-45 sweep on the scorecards. After a competitive first five minutes, Rothwell was a non-factor. According to FightMetric data, dos Santos outpaced him by a 2-to-1 clip in significant strikes in the second, third and fourth rounds before out-landing him by a 3-to-1 margin in the fifth. Quick hands, deft footwork and crisp punches to the head and body kept the Brazilian a step ahead of Rothwell, who entered the cage on the strength of a four-fight winning streak. The landslide victory helped dos Santos rebound from a knockout loss to onetime Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem in December and allowed him to put further distance between himself and the two hellacious beatings he absorbed at the hands of rival Cain Velasquez in December 2012 and October 2013.

By the Numbers: UFC Fight Night Zagreb

The demise of Junior dos Santos has been greatly exaggerated. The former heavyweight champion put to rest speculation that he is on the decline in the UFC Fight Night headliner, as he picked apart Ben Rothwell for five rounds en route to a clear-cut unanimous decision triumph at Zagreb Arena in Zagreb, Croatia, on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, “Cigano” ended Rothwell’s surprising four-fight winning streak and in the process re-established himself as one of the sport’s top big men. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night “Rothwell vs. Dos Santos,” with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com. Related » UFC Fight Night Zagreb Bonuses 157: Significant strikes landed by dos Santos, a new UFC heavyweight record. “Cigano” outlanded his foe 26 to 19 in round one, 29 to 14 in round two, 29 to 15 in round three, 40 to 18 in round four and 33 to 11 in round five. 92: Significant strikes to the body landed by dos Santos, a UFC record in any weight class. The previous best of 62 was recorded by Steve Steinbeiss in a loss to Rob Kimmons at UFC Live 2 in August 2010.

UFC Fight Night Prelims: Replacement Zak Cummings Pins First Defeat on Nicolas Dalby

The combo from @ZakCummings drops @DalbyMMA in the first!! #UFCZagreb https://t.co/yFWOMaDQGK — #UFCZagreb (@ufc) April 10, 2016 Zak Cummings presented Nicolas Dalby with a set of problems he could not solve. Clubbing left hands, overwhelming pressure and veteran savvy carried Cummings to a unanimous decision over the former Cage Warriors Fighting Championship titleholder in the featured welterweight prelim at UFC Fight Night “Rothwell vs. Dos Santos” on Sunday at Zagreb Arena in Zagreb, Croatia. All three cageside judges saw it 30-27 for Cummings (19-4, 4-1 UFC), who replaced an injured Bartosz Fabinski on short notice. Sherdog scored it 30-27, 30-27 and 30-27 for Cummings. Cummings set the tone with a strong first round -- he dropped the Dane with a right uppercut-left hook combination -- and never looked back. He routinely backed up Dalby (14-1-1, 1-1-1 UFC) with punches, proved opportunistic in the grappling exchanges and cut off a late rally from the Rumble Sports standout with a late third-round takedown. A graduate of Season 17 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Cummings has won six of his past seven bouts.

UFC Fight Night Zagreb Bonuses: Lewis, Taisumov, Perez, Cannonier Pocket $50K

Derrick Lewis has the type of power that can help pad a bank account. “The Black Beast” did exactly that at UFC Fight Night Zagreb on Sunday, knocking out Gabriel Gonzaga 4:48 into the opening frame of their co-headlining clash to earn a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus. A hard right hand from Lewis sent Gonzaga tumbling face-first to the canvas, bringing an immediate halt to the heavyweight tilt just before the end of the round. No “Fight of the Night” bonus was awarded on Sunday. Instead, Mairbek Taisumov , Alejandro Perez and Jared Cannonier joined Lewis in receiving $50,000 performance bonuses. Taisumov earned a $50,000 performance award for his first-round knockout of Damir Hadzovic in a preliminary lightweight encounter. Taisumov had his opponent reeling near the fence after landing a pair of right hands, and he put Hadzovic away with a right uppercut at the 3:44 mark of the period for his fourth straight stoppage victory inside the Octagon. Meanwhile, Perez made Ian Entwistle pay for his single-minded focus on leg locks, forcing his adversary to verbally submit to punches 4:04 into the first round of their bantamweight tussle.

Junior dos Santos Vows to Reclaim UFC Heavyweight Title: ‘I Know It’s Going to Happen’

The last two times Junior dos Santos fought for the UFC heavyweight championship, he came up short. He lost his crown to Cain Velasquez in their second bout and then was knocked out by the American in their rubber match. Since then, he had only gone 1-1 and the MMA world largely cast him aside. After his performance in the main event of Sunday’s UFC Fight Night event in Zagreb, Croatia, the former world champ has pumped some air into the lungs of his career and he finds himself right back in the thick of things regarding the promotion’s title picture. After dismantling Ben Rothwell over five rounds, dos Santos said that everything is coming back together and one day he’ll have that gold back around his waist. “We are putting everything in the right place and that’s why I’m going to be champion again,” the Brazilian told the assembled media at the post-fight press conference. “I just want to fight. I know it’s going to happen at some point.” If dos Santos is achieve what he feels is his destiny, he’ll have to turn in a few more magnificent performances like the one he had against the Wisconsinite.

Thoughts & Shots From UFC Fight Night ‘Rothwell vs. Dos Santos’

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. I have to be honest: I didn’t think we’d see this iteration of Junior dos Santos ever again. The former champion headed across the pond and battered a streaking Ben Rothwell in the UFC Fight Night 86 main event on Sunday in Zagreb, Croatia. He looked more like the man who pounded out Cain Velasquez for the heavyweight crown in 2011 than the guy who appeared to still be suffering from the two payback fights with the American Kickboxing Academy ace. The manner in which dos Santos dealt Rothwell his beating was impressive. He was faster, fitter and lighter on his feet. It allowed him to outpace his bewildered opponent and continually hammer him to the body. The perpetual attack robbed Rothwell of his stamina and left him throwing single big shots in hopes of landing a Hail Mary that would have kept his four-fight winning streak alive.

The Early Look: Rashad Evans vs. Glover Teixeira at UFC Fight Night

This Saturday's  FS1 UFC Fight Night main event Rashad Evans between Glover Teixeira is a great fight of similar ages who are solid grapplers but who also have dynamite in their fists. Moreover, it is a match up that offers each man real incentive. Teixeira may be the hotter contender, right now, but a win over Evans, who hasn't won a fight in two and a half years, will still mean something since he is a former world champion.

Opinion: A Note on Immediate Rematch Imperatives

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. With elevated levels of Jon Jones - Daniel Cormier drama and Tony Ferguson ’s sudden revelation that he needed blood and fluid drained from his lungs and couldn’t fight Khabib Nurmagomedov on April 16, this week was mostly a reminder of the grim, cyclical nature of injuries in MMA. Beyond that disappointment or maybe fuelled by a general animus as a result of that disappointment, it also appears many MMA folk aren’t too pleased about Miesha Tate making her first title defense at UFC 200 against Brazilian hitter Amanda Nunes . Since the bout’s announcement on Wednesday, critique has centered on the idea that Holly Holm deserved an immediate rematch after being choked out cold in the fifth round of her first title defense in March. More specifically, as laid out in this story by MMAJunkie’s Steven Marrocco , there is a question of whether Tate chose to fight Nunes over Holm -- as claimed by Holm’s manager Lenny Fresquez -- or if, as Tate claims, she was told by Ultimate Fighting Championship brass that Holm opted to take time off and Nunes was simply next on deck.

After Teixeira Injury, Patricio Freire Says He’s Fighting Henry Corrales at Bellator 153

It apparently didn’t take long for Bellator MMA to find a replacement opponent for Patricio Freire . The former featherweight champion revealed on Twitter Saturday that Henry Corrales will step in for the injured John Teixeira da Conceicao and face Freire at Bellator 153 . Promotion officials were not immediately available to confirm the change. “Thank you [ Henry Corrales ] for stepping up,” Freire wrote. “Much respect. Everyone was saying no but you. I know you’ll come to war, and I welcome the challenge.” After beginning his professional career with 12 consecutive wins, Corrales has faced a tough draw in Bellator MMA, dropping back-to-back fights to Daniel Straus and Emmanuel Sanchez in his first two promotional appearances. It won’t get any easier against Freire, who prior to relinquishing the 145-pound belt to Straus at Bellator 145 had won seven straight fights. “Pitbull” is 24-3 overall, with his only defeats coming to Straus, Pat Curran and Joe Warren . “That said, I”m a man on a mission,” Freire wrote.

Muay Thai Star Tiffany Van Soest Signs with Invicta FC, Glory

It looks like the rumors swirling around one of the world’s elite female muay Thai fighters turned out to be true. Tiffany Van Soest will not only continue to ply her trade as an upper-echelon kickboxer, but she’ll also venture into the MMA realm. In a joint announcement on Thursday afternoon, Invicta FC and Glory revealed the signing of Van Soest. The two companies announced independent agreements with “Time Bomb” that will allow her to fight in MMA and kickboxing simultaneously. Van Soest has already captured numerous titles in muay Thai. She has snatched up two championships in Lion Fight -- featherweight and super bantamweight -- as well as the WBC muay Thai International super bantamweight crown. “I am beyond thrilled to have this incredible opportunity to not only sign with one, but two of combat sports’ top organizations,” said Van Soest. “Striking has always been my passion and my official MMA debut has been greatly anticipated, so to be able to compete in both is a dream come true and I could not be happier.” Van Soest will first fight for Glory.

UFC Results: “Black Beast” Brutally KOs Gonzaga In 1st Round — Watch! April 10, 2016 IT'S ALL OVER! Derrick Lewis @TheBeast_UFC and his terrifying KO power puts Gabriel Gonzaga to sleep! #UFCZagreb https://t.co/92REzI2jdo — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) April 10, 2016 Gabriel Gonzaga and Derrick Lewis got intense at the “UFC Fight Night 86” weigh ins on Saturday, but they still kicked off tonight’s co main-event with a touch of the gloves. Lewis went for a headkick early and it barely landed, sending Gonzaga back to the fence. Lewis followed him and Gonzaga quickly turned the tables on him, eventually taking the fight to the mat where he transitioned to side control. He transitioned to mount and Lewis gave up his back, allowing Gonzaga to fire off some stiff shots. Gonzaga could have finished the fight on the ground, but Lewis showed determination and patience by making it back to his feet where it was his world from that point on. Lewis stunned Gonzaga with a shot and dropped him left straight and followed up with a BRUTAL right hand that sent Gonzaga crashing to the canvas.

Frank Mir will likely retire if suspended 2 years for positive drug test

The next step for Mir will be USADA testing the 'B' sample taken on March 19 and if that test comes back positive then it appears he's willing to forgo an appeal and instead face whatever punishment is handed down. A two-year suspension is the stipulated minimum for a fighter testing positive for a performance enhancing drug, but if that's the case then Mir doesn't see a reason to fight again when he'd be eligible to return at 39 years of age.

25 JDS Returns to Dominance, Batters Rothwell With Ease — Watch Now!

They both found success in their own strategy throughout the fight, leading to an extremely close first round. JDS hoped to catch Rothwell off guard by changing levels and attacking the body, and also by cutting off Rothwell’s attacks with shots of his own. Rothwell found success in backing dos Santos up toward the cage and then lunging with a combination that would connect every now and again. Rothwell was impressive in his confidence, but it was dos Santos that landed the harder shots more often.

UFC Fight Night Zagreb ‘Rothwell vs. Dos Santos’ Results: Play-by-Play & Updates

Ben Rothwell vs. Junior dos Santos Round 1 After a tense opening minute in which Rothwell walks down dos Santos in a wide stance, “Cigano” leans in and touches the American with a hard punch to the gut. Dos Santos comes away from the next exchange wiping at his eye, but referee Leon Roberts tells the heavyweights to fight on, and they resume circling the cage. Dos Santos delivers another pair of body blows as he continues to step back, looking to counterstrike. Rothwell sneaks in a few right hands, but dos Santos is winning the volume battle as the big men box in the latter half of the round. Cigano keeps his right hand cocked and mixes up straight shots to Rothwell’s body and head. Postal Connections: A ‘Bones’ to Pick

We got the news that Daniel Cormier was out of his championship defense against Jon Jones -- it still feels weird to say that considering Jones never lost the belt in the cage -- and Ovince St. Preaux will step in to compete for an interim title at UFC 197 on April 23. I find it comical that Jones may indeed walk to the cage with a belt when he finally faces “DC,” and it won’t be the real strap. I hope he takes the new belt after mauling OSP, spikes it like a football and leaves it in the cage. He knows that’s a “toy” belt and wants what he feels is rightfully his. It’s too bad we’re going to miss out on this epic rematch, but at least Jones is still going to fight. UFC 197 would have been a tough sell with only a flyweight title fight headlining the pay-per-view broadcast. Without further ado, away we go: I heard you and Jordan Breen talking about Jones and Cormier having a similar rivalry as Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. To be fair, Jones hasn’t called “DC” an “Uncle Tom” yet, so I don’t think it has quite the same edge.

Daniel Cormier explains venomous Twitter rant against Jon Jones

"Even if I don't help Ovince Saint Preux and I can't help him beat Jon because I don't know how to beat Jon Jones, I didn't do it. I can only prepare myself as best I can to try and prepare to beat him. Like I said, I didn't beat him the first time so I don't have some secret serum to give Ovince, but I would try to help him because even by me being there, it bugs him. He doesn't like it, he loses it," Cormier said about Jones. "So even the fact that he went off and called me a coward and said I'm so mentally weak, that was enough. That was enough in regards to what I was trying to get across with the Ovince Saint Preux thing.

48 Jones Exposes Police Officer As Habitual Racial Profiler In New Instagram Post

“Officer Brown all over the news and Albuquerque after reporters dig up how many times he has been in trouble for racial profiling in the past. I’m definitely not want to pull the race card but at the same time I’m not really surprised about this discovery. Having him stand there, look me in the eyes and accuse me of things him and I both know I didn’t do, made me feel betrayed by the community, he made me feel absolutely powerless. Now I understand why so many people are against law-enforcement. Officer brown has almost single-handedly ruined my trust in law-enforcement. The sad thing about it is I actually went to school for criminal justice, I wanted to be an officer myself. Fortunately I know better than to let one bad apple ruin my views of a whole group.
