UFC 210 Medical Suspensions: Daniel Cormier, Chris Weidman Sidelined 45 Days

The New York State Athletic Commission issued no medical suspensions longer than 45 days following UFC 210 . Among those receiving potential 45-day layoffs were light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and former middleweight king Chris Weidman . The NYSAC released a list of medical suspensions from the event to on Tuesday. UFC 210 took place at the Keybank Center in Buffalo, N.Y., on April 8 and saw Cormier retain his 205-pound title with a second round submission of Anthony Johnson in the evening’s main event. Cormier is suspended a minimum of 45 days pending NYSAC clearance, while Johnson received a 30-day sit. The NYSAC does not disclose specific reasons for its suspensions. Meanwhile, Weidman received a possible 45-day layoff following his controversial second-round TKO defeat to Gegard Mousasi in the co-main event. The bout was halted when it was determined Weidman could not continue after Mousasi landed a pair of knees to the head. Initially, the blows were thought to be illegal before the ruling was overturned.

What to Watch For: Bellator 177

Leandro Higo chose to jump right into the fire. In his first appearance under the Bellator MMA banner, the Pitbull Brothers prospect will challenge bantamweight champion Eduardo Dantas in the Bellator 177 headliner on Friday at the Budapest Sports Arena in Budapest, Hungary. Their five-round clash anchors a four-fight main card scheduled to air on Spike TV via tape delay (9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT). A replacement for the injured Darrion Caldwell , Higo will enter his organizational debut on the strength of an eight-fight winning streak. The 28-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has already captured titles in the Resurrection Fighting Alliance and Legacy Fighting Alliance promotions, while securing 10 of his 17 career victories by submission and three more by knockout or technical knockout. Higo last competed at Legacy Fighting Alliance 1 in January, when he took a five-round unanimous decision from Steven Peterson . Dantas, 28, has compiled a 9-1 record since arriving in Bellator in 2011 and finds himself in the midst of a second title reign at 135 pounds.

The Bottom Line: In MMA, Easy Solutions are Usually Illusory

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * The conclusion to the Chris Weidman - Gegard Mousasi co-main event at UFC 210 on Saturday was a complete mess. Weidman was struck with what appeared to be illegal blows and given time to recover. Instant replay, despite not being a part of New York’s MMA rules, demonstrated the blows were legal as Weidman got an extended respite from a bad situation. Finally, the fight was just stopped, much to the chagrin of everyone involved, including Mousasi. It was an exceedingly disappointing conclusion to what was a terrific fight on paper. As this sequence was going down, a wide variety of scapegoats started emerging. Dominick Cruz blamed the doctors for stopping the fight. Others targeted referee Dan Miragliotta for missing the original call and then asking for instant replay when that was not allowed under the rules. That led to criticism of the instant replay rule itself.

Charles Oliveira Suspended 60 Days for Jumping Over Cage After UFC 210 Victory

Charles Oliveira ’s jubilation following a successful return to the lightweight division at UFC 210 will keep him sidelined for a couple months. Oliveira was suspended 60 days by the New York State Athletic Commission for jumping over the cage after defeating Will Brooks in a featured 155-pound contest at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, N.Y., on April 8. The NYSAC revealed the sanction to on Wednesday. After a stint at 145 pounds, “Do Bronx” looked to be in top form at lightweight. The Brazilian took Brooks down twice, and moved to the former Bellator champion’s back when he attempted to rise to his feet. From there, Oliveira secured a rear-naked choke and forced his opponent to tap out 2:30 into round one. While Oliveira’s NYSAC-mandated suspension will last until June, it’s unclear if he will stay at lightweight for his next Octagon appearance. “I have to talk to my team, but I want to stay at 145 pounds. It’s my division and I feel more comfortable,’ Oliveira said in a post-fight quote provided by the UFC.

The Physical and Mental Evolution of Robert Whittaker

Robert Whittaker will take a six-fight winning streak into the Octagon against Ronaldo Souza at UFC on Fox 24 this Saturday at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri. “The Reaper” has become a poster boy for the movement against extreme weight cutting through a mesmerizing run at 185 pounds. Since he moved up from welterweight, Whittaker has looked sensational in becoming the dark horse of the middleweight division. While plying his trade at 170 pounds, Whittaker was usually in no mood for conversations come fight week. Nowadays, he chirps cheerily through his media obligations without the additional stress of the scales. “For me, personally, moving up to the heavier weight was a great decision, for my health and my performance,” Whittaker told “I had to think about my health and the longevity of my career. Undergoing extreme weight cuts shortens that too much. I’m glad the performances have been strong since I’ve made the move up. “The problem [as a welterweight] was, for the whole eight- to 10-week camp, I wasn’t training to advance my skill set,” he added.

20’s Pound-for-Pound Top 10

Since we last checked in with our pound-for-pound top 10, Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight king Tyron Woodley has settled his beef with Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson at UFC 209 in Las Vegas, and UFC 205-pound champ Daniel Cormier earned a second submission win over Anthony Johnson in Buffalo, New York. Was it enough to budge the order of our lineup? No, it was not. In the absence of Cormier rival Jon Jones , 125-pound dominator Demetrious Johnson remains in our top spot while he awaits title challenger Wilson Reis in the UFC on Fox 24 headliner on April 15 in Kansas City, Missouri. By the same accord, while his March 4 majority decision over Thompson was a major accomplishment, it was not enough to propel Woodley past year-in, year-out pound-for-pound staple Jose Aldo ( live odds ). Even though we have no movement in the top 10, there is no reason to despair. In fact, the coming months have two bouts on the schedule between current Sherdog pound-for-pound stalwarts. At UFC 212 on June 3 in Rio de Janeiro, the greatest featherweight of all-time, Aldo, is lined up to unify his slice of the UFC featherweight crown with surging Hawaiian Max Holloway .

Demetrious Johnson welcomes fellow UFC champ Cody Garbrandt to attempt flyweight move

Reis is of course the center of his attention, and Garbrandt has a 135-pound title defense lined up against T.J. Dillashaw at UFC 213 in July. But if all the obstacles are cleared, Johnson said he wouldn’t hesitate to accept a showdown with “No Love” the same way he’s accepted all other fights presented to him during his title reign.

As one of the fighters brought to the Octagon by way of White’s “Lookin’ for a Fight” series, Clark knew that the UFC boss was in attendance and scouting when he stepped in to face Viana. Just five fights into his career, Clark could have folded under the pressure, but he was loving it. “It wasn’t really an option to lose,” he said. “I really didn’t think about losing. It was, ‘Okay, I’m gonna win this fight and get signed to the UFC.’ It was an RFA title fight as well, and a title fight’s a title fight, no matter what promotion, so I was hyped for that. And then having Dana in the crowd and it was in my hometown as well, so a lot of people came out. There was a lot of pressure, but it was good pressure and a great feeling, and I knew I wanted to keep that feeling going under the big lights and keep advancing.” Clark would get his shot to advance three months later, only to lose in his hometown to Alex Nicholson via first round knockout. It was a crushing blow to a prospect with high hopes for his career.

Spike Elects Not to Renew PBC Contract, Network Plans to Devote Focus to Bellator MMA

Spike’s relationship with Premier Boxing Champions has reached an end after two years. confirmed with Spike executive David Schwarz that the network has elected not to renew its contract with the Al Haymon-led promotion. first reported the news. However, Schwarz did not close the door on televising PBC fights in the future. “We have a great relationship and running dialogue with Al and the PBC,” Schwarz told in statement. “Our focus is on Bellator right now, but if the right fight arises -- we are all ears.” PBC debuted on the cable network in 2015 and initially planned on holding 33 Spike-televised cards over the course of three years. The promotion ultimately held 17 boxing cards, including the last PBC on Spike offering in January. According to the ESPN report, the decision to devote more attention to Bellator was only part of the reason Spike decided not to re-up with PBC: The network was also not satisfied with the quality of fight cards provided by PBC. Perhaps the biggest fight held by PBC on Spike saw Amir Khan defeat Chris Algieri via unanimous decision in a welterweight bout on May 30, 2015.

NYSAC Clarifies Replay Controversy, Can Review Video ‘to Arrive at Correct Determination’

It appears that Chris Weidman might not have much of an appeal following his loss to Gegard Mousasi at UFC 210 . The April 8 bout in Buffalo, N.Y., was halted after Mousasi landed what referee Dan Miragliotta deemed to be an illegal knee in the second round. Initially, Weidman was given five minutes to recover from the blow, but Miragliotta consulted with fellow official “Big” John McCarthy, who told him that the knee landed by Mousasi was indeed legal. Shortly thereafter, cageside physicians examined Weidman and ruled him unfit to continue, giving Mousasi the technical knockout victory at the 3:13 mark of round two. Meanwhile, UFC Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner appeared on the pay-per-view broadcast and said that the use of instant replay was not allowable in New York. It appears that Ratner’s claim was not correct, as the New York State Athletic Commission clarified its instant replay policy in a statement released to “The Commission acted to both protect Mr. Weidman’s health and safety, and to achieve the correct result regarding the outcome of the bout,” the statement read.

Chris Weidman's UFC 210 Appeal Dealt a Heavy Blow |

Weidman was told he had five minutes to recover. Not sure why the doctors were allowed into the ring. He was not cut. when he was told that the knee was in fact legal at that moment the ref should have told him there would be no more time and ask if he wanted to continue. If he could not respond, that is the referee decision to stop the fight not the doctor. It is up to the ref to decide if a fighter can intelligently defend himself. Hence he was treated unfairly and should be granted a rematch. However I personally think he was done in after the knee and the fight would have ended quickly thereafter. But we won’t know that because we were deprived of it by idiots. Let em fight again. Mussasi aint gonna beat any of the top guys besides Bisping anyway. I think Weidman is a bit overrated as his cardio is a problem.

Direction of Bantamweight Division Led Leandro Higo to Choose Bellator Over UFC

Shortly after Leandro Higo clinched Legacy Fighting Alliance’s inaugural bantamweight crown with a victory over ex-LFC champ Steven Peterson on Jan. 13, he made his plea to receive a call up to the next level. Only, at the time, Higo was calling for a shot in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, not Bellator MMA. Initially, the UFC was the main object of Higo’s focus, but things changed after meeting with Bellator officials. “UFC, I’ve been on their radar for a long time. I heard from people from the UFC that I’ll be one of the next Brazilians to get signed. Bellator at the time they didn’t put a lot of investment in the bantamweight division. They started to do it now,” Higo told “They signed me, they signed Michael McDonald and I already know they’re bringing some other names. They have big plans for the weight class. “The division didn’t have much focus back then. But now they do and then they came to talk to us, they made an offer I couldn’t refuse…Bellator to me is as big as any promotion in the world. It was very happy news to know they were interested,” he continued.

Demetrious Johnson responds to Cody Garbrandt's challenge |

“That’s not the first time somebody has said something like that. Lots of people say that they can make the weight class. Hell, I can make 115 pounds if they want to throw the division out there. Would I be able to perform at my ability? Probably not. But that’s fine. “If he wants to come down and the UFC wants to give him an immediate title shot, because that’s what they do nowadays – give immediate title shots – then that’s fine. Or if I go up and challenge him for his belt if the negotiations go well, then yeah, it could happen. It’s a fight.” “I’ve never, ever turned anybody down from coming to my weight class and trying to get my belt. I’ve never done it and it’s not going to start now and it’s never going to happen. If Jose Aldo says, ‘I can make 125 pounds, Demetrious Johnson; I’m coming down to fight you,’ I’m like, ‘Sweet. Perfect. Let’s get down to that weight class and let’s make it happen.’ Like I said, a lot of people have said it before, and I’m still here.”
