Source: Dan Henderson to Face Hector Lombard in Middleweight Bout at UFC 199

Dan Henderson will get a new dance partner. Less than 24 hours after he was removed from his UFC on Fox 19 match with Lyoto Machida after the Brazilian was flagged for alleged use of a banned substance, Henderson will take on Hector Lombard in a middleweight bout at UFC 199 , Sherdog.com has learned from sources close to the negotiations. The event goes down June 4 at The Forum in Los Angeles, California. Henderson (31-14), is in need of a win following the worst stretch of his career. The 45-year-old knockout artist is just 2-6 in his last eight bouts, and has been stopped inside the distance in four of those contests. Lombard, 34-5, last saw action in a controversial clash with Neil Magny on March 19. Lombard sustained a prolonged beating before the action was eventually stopped by referee Steve Perceval early in the third stanza. Many fans and pundits felt the duel should have been stopped at earlier points in the exchange.

UFC Tabs November 12 for Madison Square Garden Mega Event in New York City

The Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s renewed relationship with the Big Apple now has a date. The promotion revealed Thursday morning after Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill to legalize and regulate mixed martial arts in New York that it will host a pay-per-view card at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 12. No matchups were announced for the event. “I want to thank Governor Andrew Cuomo, Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Morelle, Senator Joe Griffo and the many other leaders in the state of New York for legalizing and regulating the sport of mixed martial arts,” said UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta. “Our commitment to bringing incredible live events to New York starts immediately, as we’ve planned a major Pay-Per-View event at Madison Square Garden on November 12. It’s going to be a historic, monumental moment for this sport and our passionate fans when the Octagon finally arrives in New York.” The UFC also announced that it would reveal plans for a second event in Upstate New York by the end of 2016. “Today marks a great day for both MMA fans and New York,” stated Joel Fisher, executive vice president, Marquee Events and Operations, The Madison Square Garden Company.

Report: UFC Heavyweight Mark Hunt Signs 6-Fight, Multi-Million Dollar Contract

UFC heavyweight Mark Hunt has signed a multi-fight contract to remain with the Las Vegas-based promotion until the end of his mixed martial arts career. UFC Tonight confirmed the news on Wednesday, but specific terms of Hunt’s deal were not disclosed on the show. According to a report from New Zealand-based stuff.co.nz , Hunt’s new contract is a “six fight multi-million dollar deal” that spans 30 months in total. "It's not about the money. Of course I had to get paid for my work but I want that title," Hunt told the site.  "Dana gave me a message and we talked about it. There were some back and forth negotiations. "I think I still deserve a title shot and in the end I thought six fights should do it. I'm glad to finish my career at the top end with the UFC.  I want to bring the gold down under.” Hunt has won his last two fights in the Octagon, stopping Antonio Silva 3:41 into their rematch at UFC 193 before knocking out Frank Mir at the 3:01 mark of the opening stanza on March 19. “The Super Samoan” is 7-4-1 in the promotion overall and also owns victories over Stefan Struve , Roy Nelson , Cheick Kongo and Ben Rothwell .

One Championship Welterweight Crown Stays with Ben Askren in ‘Global Rivals’ Headliner

Nikolay Aleksakhin ’s best efforts were not enough to dethrone Ben Askren . Askren retained his welterweight championship with a unanimous decision over Aleksakhin in the One Championship 40 “Global Rivals” headliner on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines. All three cageside judges sided with Askren (15-0), to the surprise of no one. Like so many other Askren opponents, Aleksakhin was put in untenable situations, often pinned beneath the four-time NCAA All-American and onetime Olympic wrestler. The champion executed a takedown inside the first minute, advanced to side control and grinded away at the chiseled Russian with elbows, short punches and knees to the head. With that, the tone was set. The fight more or less followed the narrative for the remaining four rounds. Aleksakhin (17-4) gave the Roufusport star pause in the third with power punches and a high kick but could not keep him at bay for long. Whenever Askren sensed danger, he turned to his takedowns and drove the challenger to his back. Aleksakhin stung Askren with a right hand in the fourth round but faded down the stretch, as the “Funky” wrestler’s work took an obvious toll on his gas tank and left him incapable of turning the tide with meaningful offense.

Opinion: Please, No Mayweather-Pacquiao 2

That didn’t take long, did it? All Manny Pacquiao had to do was turn in an impressive performance against Timothy Bradley and the media ran wild with questions about whether we’ll see a rematch between “Pac-Man” and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Please, no. I don’t care how good Pacquiao looked against Bradley. This version of Pacquiao will never, ever beat Mayweather. To be completely honest, I’d prefer it if Pacqiuao retired, but I just don’t believe he will. Everything surrounding Pacquiao’s so-called retirement has lacked conviction. Never once has Pacquiao made it clear that he is done with boxing. Sure, his wife and mother want him to call it quits and there’s the ever looming question about how much time he will have to spare if he becomes a senator in his home country of the Philippines, but you can see that Pacquiao still loves boxing. If nothing else, he loves the fans and putting on a show. There isn’t a show when you’re passing bills in the senate. Honestly, that’s boring. All Pacquiao knows is boxing. After two decades in the sport that turned a pauper into a prince and made him richer than he could have imagined, he’s just going to walk away? More importantly, as much as Pacquiao loves to help the people, another hefty $20 million payday couldn’t hurt; and what’s Jinkee Pacquiao going to do when her husband is moping around the house because he has nothing to do? She’s going to have to let him do what he loves.

One Championship Titleholder Ben Askren Sees Nikolay Aleksakhin as ‘Fairly Easy Fight’

Welterweight titleholder Ben Askren will defend his belt against Russia’s Nikolay Aleksakhin in the One Championship 40 “Global Rivals” main event on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines. “It’s a fairly easy fight for me,” Askren told Sherdog.com. A statement like that from most fighters would be considered trash talk, but coming from the former Bellator MMA champion and onetime Olympic wrestler, it sounds more like a confident assessment. “I like the fight,” Askren said. “I think he’s got a nice combat sambo background, but the first guy I fought in One actually was a world bronze medalist in combat sambo; and I think their style fits right in to what I want to do -- my style.” Askren’s credentials do his talking for him, but his performances under the One Championship banner have brought an entirely new conversation to the table. Once criticized as a grinding decision machine, the undefeated Askren has finished four of his last five fights and now wants to show fans his new bag of tricks. “I’ve been feeling really sharp in camp,” he said.

Devin Clark, Leandro Higo Crowned Champions at Resurrection Fighting Alliance 37

Devin Clark now has some hardware to go along with his perfect professional record. Clark captured the vacant Resurrection Fighting Alliance light heavyweight championship with a second-round technical knockout against Rafael Viana in the RFA 37 headliner on Friday at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. A hand injury left Viana (6-1) unable to continue between the second and third rounds. The two men staggered each other with simultaneous hooks during their first standup exchange, but from that point forward, Clark (6-0) was in control. The 25-year-old South Dakotan struck for takedowns in both rounds and grinded Viana with punches and elbows from top position. At some point in round two, the Brazilian suffered an injury to his right middle finger. Once Viana returned to his corner between rounds, it became clear his night was done. In the co-main event, Pitbull Brothers export Leandro Higo claimed the vacant RFA bantamweight championship, as he rendered Joey Miolla unconscious with a first-round rear-naked choke. Miolla (8-2) went limp 2:07 into round one, his eight-fight winning streak at an end.

Source: Keith Thurman-Shawn Porter Match Headed to Brooklyn on June 25

The highly-anticipated but delayed mega fight between WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman and former world champ Shawn Porter officially has a home: The Barclays center in Brooklyn, Sherdog.com learned from an industry insider Friday afternoon. Managing Editor Mike Fridley was the first to report the news on Twitter. The two were supposed to clash on March 12 in the Mohegan Sun Resort Casino in Connecticut, but when “One Time” was injured in a motor vehicle accident, the bout was postponed. June 25 has been the target date for several weeks, but until today there hasn’t been an official home. CBS will televise the championship clash live. Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) is one of boxing’s brightest young stars. A bout against Porter is expected to be his toughest test to date and the boxing world was torn as to whom it felt was going to be victorious. Thurman already holds wins over Jesus Soto Karass, Julio Diaz and Robert Guerrero and the Floridian is poised to take that next step toward stardom. Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs), meanwhile, has been hell-bent on getting back to where he was before he lost a decision to Kell Brook two years ago.

Steve Cunningham’s Heart Takes Aim at Another World Title

It was always about the heart -- his heart, his daughter Kennedy’s heart, his family’s heart. Nothing beats louder in a fighter than his heart, and no one can deny it is a great engine that fuels former two-time IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham. He has faced personal torment, dealing with the health of his daughter Kennedy, who was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome -- a rare congenital disease that occurs when parts of the left side of the heart (mitral valve, left ventricle, aortic valve and aorta) are not completely developed. She underwent a successful heart transplant in December 2014, while her father was in throes of his career. Cunningham opted to move to heavyweight, dealing with bigger, stronger guys, and he knew the risk. However, his heart got in the way. It convinced him that he could take the punishment of guys 20, 30 or 40 pounds heavier, like future heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, and he kept coming back for more. That is when his head finally kicked in and “USS” opted to move back down to where he had the most success: cruiserweight. Now, Krzysztof Glowacki has a problem in front of him Saturday, when the WBO cruiserweight champ faces Cunningham (28-7-1, 13 KOs) as part of a tripleheader from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Jessica Andrade Moves to Strawweight, Meets Jessica Penne at UFC 199

Jessica Andrade will make her 115-pound debut against Jessica Penne at UFC 199 on June 4. Promotion officials confirmed the strawweight bout following an initial report from the Los Angeles Daily News . UFC 199 takes place at the Forum in Los Angeles and is headlined by a middleweight title rematch between Luke Rockhold and Chris Weidman . Andrade, 24, posted a 4-3 record at bantamweight since signing with the Las Vegas-based promotion in 2013. Most recently, “Bate Estaca” suffered a second-round submission loss to Raquel Pennington at UFC 191 last September. Penne, meanwhile, hasn’t competed since taking a brutal beating at the hands of Joanna Jedrzejczyk in a strawweight title bout last June at UFC Fight Night in Berlin. The former Invicta FC titlist is 12-3 as a professional, including a split-verdict against Randa Markos in her Octagon debut.

Opinion: Deconstructing the Stepping Up Myth

It’s time to distinguish praise for stepping up to fight a well-prepared opponent without adequately training oneself from the hard fact that the opportunity is born out of a slanted offer that should not be celebrated with applause. Stepping up is given more positive spin because we constantly see the ugly opposite side of it all too often: Those asserting their right to not fight the world’s best on short notice are called cowards. Legitimate injuries are being dissed, as fighters are criticized by their opponent -- and others in high places -- for being scared or faking an injury. Fighters like stepping up on short notice even with potentially damaging outcomes because doing so results in what amounts to a surprise paycheck. At other times, an interim championship might be in play, whatever that’s worth. This is all to disguise what has become overwhelmingly obvious: “Stepping up” is bro code for pumping up someone who brings a knife to a gunfight. Nate Diaz ’s post-UFC 196 media appearances have done much to contextualize this issue.

The Savage Truth: Ali Act to MMA -- Good or Bad?

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. I’m sure you have heard about the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act by now. There have been a number of people who have been very vocal in their belief that the federal legislation enacted 10 years ago should also cover the sport of mixed martial arts. With this week’s news that an Oklahoma congressman is preparing to introduce new legislation that would indeed bring the protections of the Ali Act to MMA, I thought it would be a good time to take a closer look at what that would mean. First off, full disclosure, I am a proponent of bringing the Ali Act to MMA. I feel that mixed martial arts is a professional sport and has proven to be a technically demanding endeavor practiced by some of the most athletic, dedicated and disciplined competitors in the sports world. It is a combat sport that is run by promoters who, if unchecked or unscrupulous, have the ability to run roughshod over the very people who line their pockets.

PBC on NBC Weigh-in Results: Spence, Algieri On Point

Premier Boxing Champions will invade the Barclays Center Saturday evening in Brooklyn as an intriguing showdown of two high-level welterweights will highlight the night. NBC will televise the action, which is anchored by the enticing matchup between Errol Spence Jr. and Chris Algieri. At Friday’s weigh-ins, all of the fighters on the main card made weight, giving the event the green light. Former world champion Algieri (21-2, 8 KOs), who went the distance with such foes as Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan, as well as conquering Ruslan Provodnikov, was the first to hit the scale. The New Yorker officially weighed in at 145.6 pounds, priming him for his 10-round affair. Spence (19-0, 16 KOs) is among the best young lions in the sport and he wasn’t outdone by his foe; the Texan clocked in at 146.4 pounds. The co-featured bout is a cruiserweight duel between Krzysztof Glowacki as he defends his WBO title against Steve Cunningham. A former two-time IBF cruiserweight champ, Cunningham (28-7-1, 13 KOs) checked in at 199.2 pounds. Glowacki (25-0, 16 KOs), who is coming off a spectacular 11th knockout of Marco Huck in August, weighed 199 pounds.

Boxing: Adrien Broner Indicted on Assault, Robbery Charges

Multi-divisional world boxing champion Adrien Broner was indicted by a grand jury on Thursday. Broner, who was arrested and put behind bars earlier this week for violating his probation in an unrelated reckless driving case, could face up to 26 years in prison if found guilty. Broner (32-2, 24 KOs) was officially indicted on assault and robbery charges stemming from a lawsuit filed by a man who claimed Broner pointed a gun at him over a dispute over a high-stakes bowling session in the fighter’s hometown of Cincinnati. The man alleges to have won thousands of dollars from Broner, but when he tried to leave the bowling alley, “The Problem” pulled a gun on him and knocked him out, taking all of his money. Broner, who won titles in four different weight classes, was indicted on an aggravated battery charge, a first-degree felony that carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison. The polarizing pugilist was also indicted second-degree charges of felonious assault and robbery, which carry up to eight years apiece. Bond for Broner was set at $100,000. No date has been set as of yet for a pretrial hearing.

Kevin Ross: Bellator Has ‘Right Vision’ to Promote Kickboxing Growth

Kevin Ross has been a staple of the muay Thai and kickboxing world a long time and has beaten some of the elite of his weight class. He’s not a household name by any stretch of the imagination, but those who follow the often overlooked sport know that “The Soul Assassin” is the real deal. At 35, though, the Las Vegas resident understands that his time in the limelight won’t be here that much longer, but he is eagerly anticipating what lies ahead. Bellator Kickboxing is set to launch on Saturday in Torino, Italy, and Ross is one of the featured combatants on the marquee. The sport has been languishing in the shadows in America for decades but Ross – and Bellator – believe a critical corner is about to be turned and over time, the masses will be flocking to venues to watch kickboxing just like they do for big-ticket boxing and MMA events. Ross (41-11, 13 KOs), who holds wins over the likes of Coke Chunhawat, Matt Embree and Malaipet Sasiprapa, couldn’t be happier with his position in Bellator. A longtime veteran of Lion Fight and a captor of eight different world titles, Ross said he nearly signed his Bellator contract through the phone when Scott Coker contacted him.
