UFC on Fox 24 ‘Johnson vs. Reis’ Play-by-Play, Results & Round-by-Round Scoring

Ronaldo ”Jacare” Souza vs. Robert Whittaker Round 1 Whittaker tests the range with some long left hands and denies the first attempt by "Jacare" to tie up near the fence. Ninety seconds in, Souza gets the clinch and pins Whittaker to the fence, hits the Australian with a few knees inside and then takes him down. Whittaker tries to roll into top position but Souza keeps hold of an ankle and maintains control on the ground. Whittaker gets back to his feet, gets taken down again and has to escape quickly as Souza tries to take the back. The middleweights are back to striking in the center of the cage with two minutes on the clock. A big left from Whittaker knocks an off-balance Jacare to the ground, but the Brazilian is back on his feet without absorbing damage. Whittaker is starting to find the range with his hands now, clipping Souza with another right hand, now an uppercut. Souza takes back some ground with a pair of blasting overhand rights of his own as they hit the final minute of round one. Whittaker counters a wild punch from Souza with a speedy left-handed counter, then backs up the BJJ black belt with a straight left at the horn.

5 Things You Might Not Know About Wilson Reis

Popular opinion has Wilson Reis staring up at MMA’s equivalent of Mount Everest. The Alliance MMA standout challenges Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight titleholder Demetrious Johnson in the UFC on Fox 24 main event this Saturday at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri. There, Reis will attempt to succeed where Joseph Benavidez , John Dodson , John Moraga , Ali Bagautinov , Chris Cariaso , Kyoji Horiguchi , Henry Cejudo and Tim Elliott have all failed, some of them in spectacular fashion. The 32-year-old challenger has the wind of a three-fight winning streak in his sails, having last appeared in a unanimous decision victory over former Shooto Pacific Rim champion Yuta Sasaki at UFC 208 on Feb. 11 in Brooklyn, New York. BetDSI.com lists Reis as a +540 underdog . Those long odds are more a reflection of Johnson’s dominance at 125 pounds than the Brazilian’s viability as a contender. “Mighty Mouse” has made nine consecutive successful title defenses since he took ownership of the flyweight championship in 2012. A 10th would tie him Anderson Silva for the most in UFC history.

Marlon Moraes makes UFC debut in June against Assuncao

Highly-regarded former World Series of Fighting bantamweight champion Marlon Moraes will get a home game in his UFC debut, as he faces No. 3-ranked contender Raphael Assuncao at UFC 212 on Jun. 3 Also made official for the UFC 212 event is a strawweight matchup between Viviane Pereira and Jamie Moyle. In the main event of UFC 212, which airs live on Pay-Per-View from Jeunesse Arena, Jose Aldo meets Max Holloway for the undisputed UFC featherweight championship. A native of Nova Friburgo who has become a familiar name to UFC fans for his work with current Octagon stars Frankie Edgar, Edson Barboza and Eddie Alvarez, Moraes dominated in the WSOF promotion, going 11-0 with seven finishes while successfully defending his 135-pound crown five times. Unbeaten since 2011, the 28-year-old now begins his quest for a UFC title against fellow Brazilian Assuncao, who has won eight of his last nine, most recently defeating Aljamain Sterling in January. Add in that Assuncao has never lost in Brazil, and the stage is set for an epic showdown.

Opinion: A ‘Mighty Mouse’ and a Lucky ‘Spider’

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Demetrious Johnson returns to primetime network television for UFC on Fox 24 this Saturday, putting his flyweight throne on the line against Wilson Reis . Johnson is a -900 favorite and one of the least interesting aspects of the entire card, which is replete with contender bouts, exciting style clashes and a host of quality prospects, including the debut of maybe the best blue-chipper in all of MMA right now: France's Tom Duquesnoy . Even the card's location -- the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri -- seems like the weird sort of cosmic promotional joke that plays out in Johnson's career repeatedly. Johnson's last title challenger was Tim Elliott in December, and Elliott is on this card because he's from Missouri. Of course the UFC schedule would never break in such a way so as to align Johnson's challenger with a meaningful location, as he prepares to face a Brazilian based out of San Diego, California, in Kansas City.

UFC on FOX 24's 'Jacare' Souza: Middleweight title goes through me, Romero, Rockhold, Mousasi

“I’m ready for a challenge,” he said. “I can’t sit in my home waiting for Bisping. He’s a disaster for the middleweight division. He’s stopped the whole middleweight division. Right now, we need fights – me, Romero, Luke and Mousasi. We need to stay in the octagon because Bisping – he doesn’t fight any tough opponents. He’s afraid. I can’t believe Michael Bisping is afraid of Luke or Romero. It’s serious. Me, Romero, Luke and Mousasi, we need fights. We need to stay in the octagon. The winner of us four should fight for the belt – the fans need a good fight. I’m here to deliver.”

Study the banana split and learn how to apply this finish in BJJ by @gallerr

Have you been caught in a banana split? It reminds one of something Nino Schembri might do, except worse-looking and more crude. The banana split is an attack to the legs or groin that works very well in or out of the gi and can be executed starting from a back-take, or with one's opponent in all fours. One Championship belt holder Shinya Aoki teaches here the mechanic and shows how to apply the banana split starting from the back-take. Enjoy. #jiujitsu #bjj #brazilianjiujitsu

UFC on FOX 24 results: Anthony Smith turns tables on Andrew Sanchez late, wins by KO

Possibly down two rounds, Smith needed to stay upright long enough to land his own big shots. Thankfully for him, the pace of the first two rounds had tired Sanchez to the point where his ability to take the fight to the ground was diminished. Smith started putting together combinations. By the end of the frame, Sanchez appeared to be running on fumes and winged his overhand right. But he missed big, and Smith followed him to the other end of the cage before landing the fight-ending combination.

World Renowned BJJ Fighter Takes On Kung Fu Legend — Watch!

The idea of pitting two experts of different martial arts should sound extremely familiar to mixed martial arts fans, as that’s the mindset the Ultimate Fighting Championship was built off of over twenty years ago. Sherdog.com’s WMMA Pound-for-Pound Top 10

The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Bellator MMA both have women's featherweight champions now. They have even fought one another before as it happens, way back in the Strikeforce days. While Germaine de Randamie and Julia Budd may both have gold belts, only one of them is on our list, although the other did boot Holly Holm out of our top 10. Holm's head kick on Ronda Rousey remains the most significant and richest win in women's mixed martial arts history, but with de Randamie toppling the former UFC women's bantamweight champion at UFC 209, “The Preacher's Daughter,” our previous No. 8, is off this list after her third straight loss. Meanwhile, at Bellator 174, Budd won her eighth bout in a row, knocking off women's MMA pioneer Marloes Coenen , punching her out in the fourth round and retiring the Dutch all-time great. There is no doubt that Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino still rules the roost at 145 pounds, but over the last four years, Budd has steadily taken out top-10 featherweight opposition. For that, she debuts on this list at No. 10. It certainly has not been good times for everyone with belts, though.
