After a near two-year absence, Nurmagomedov returned to the Octagon on Saturday at UFC on FOX Fight Night in Tampa and showed off why he's arguably the best 155-pound fighter in the world. He made that clear to opponent Darrell Horcher midway through the first round when he took the UFC newcomer down with a slam that would make Matt Hughes proud.

What a finish! @MikeMav22 submits Beneil Dariush with a nasty rear naked choke! #UFCTampa https://t.co/otR372WLgy — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) April 16, 2016 Lightweight contender Michael Chiesa looked superb against Beneil Dariush in the featured preliminary bout as he scored a second-round submission. Chiesa was rocked by the Iranian in the first, but he weathered the storm and regrouped. Early in the second, the Washington native landed a powerful takedown and quickly took Dariush’s back and from there, it was a matter of time before he sunk in the rear-naked choke, forcing the tap. The official time of the submission came at 1:20 of the frame, allowing “Maverick” to become the first man to submit Dariush in MMA.

Fedor Emelianenko to Face Fabio Maldonado at Rizin FF Event on June 17

Fedor Emelianenko ’s comeback tour will continue against Fabio Maldonado at a Rizin Fighting Federation on June 17, according to a report from Brazilian media outlet Combate . Sherdog.com on Sunday confirmed the matchup with a source close to the bout, following an initial report from Brazilian outlet Combate . The Japanese promotion has yet to officially announced the matchup, which will reportedly take place in St. Petersburg, Russia, and will be contested at heavyweight. After a retirement that lasted more than three years, Emelianenko returned to action at Rizin’s New Year’s Eve Event, where he forced Jaideep Singh to submit to punches 3:02 into the opening frame of their bout. “The Last Emperor” has won his last four fights and owns a 35-4 career record. Maldonado, meanwhile, was released from the UFC following back-to-back losses to Corey Anderson and Quinton Jackson in 2015. While the 36-year-old Brazilian competed primarily at 205 pounds during his Octagon tenure, he did face Stipe Miocic at heavyweight in May 2014, losing via technical knockout in 35 seconds.

Opinion: Do We Need a GSP Comeback?

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. After taking a two-year hiatus, former welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre appears to be mulling a comeback to the Ultimate Fighting Championship . Although there had been speculation as to whether he would be willing to step into the Octagon again, his appearance at UFC 196 and a few interviews in which he has seemed more optimistic than ever about making a comeback are signs that point in the right direction. All things considered, do we need a GSP comeback? It’s an interesting question because the UFC hasn’t necessarily missed St. Pierre since he decided to semi-retire from competition after defending his title against Johny Hendricks in November 2013. While he won a decision, he absorbed a lot of punishment and promptly decided to vacate the title he had defended nine consecutive times. Since his departure, the welterweight division has been more exciting than it has ever been.

15 Rashad Evans: Something has to change after KO loss

"I've been in this sport for awhile. I've been at the top and I'm riding a real low right now. When you're at this point right now, you have to re-evaluate everything. Welcome to being a fighter."

Postal Connections: Big Apple Finally Bites

The sport of mixed martial arts on Thursday enjoyed a historic day. While I never thought the MMA ban in New York was as big a deal as some people made it out to be, I can understand why the fans from the state and the Ultimate Fighting Championship are overjoyed after such a long hard-fought battle. With the stroke of his pen, Gov. Andrew Cuomo ended 19 years of exile and opened up one of the biggest -- if not the biggest -- media markets in the world to MMA. We’ll touch on the future of New York MMA as well as a slew of other topics in this week’s Postal Connections mailbag. Without further ado, away we go. I am so excited to finally be able to attend a UFC event in my home state. I am also sad that the corrupt politicians kept my favorite sport out of New York for so long. Hopefully the UFC brings a huge show to MSG this summer so everyone can see what they were missing. -- Nicole P. It is a pretty exciting day, Nicole. The UFC is coming to the Empire State, but you’re going to have to wait a little bit longer than summer to hit Madison Square Garden for a UFC event.

Boxing’s Greats of the States | Indiana: Tiger Jack Fox

Boxers come from every corner of the globe. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring styles prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series, the spotlight will shine on the best boxer of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. For example, all-time great heavyweight legend Joe Louis was born in Alabama, but he is identified almost universally with Detroit.

Koscheck-Daley 2 Co-Headlines Bellator 158; ‘Venom’ Page, Linton Vassell Also Set for London

The heavyweight main event between Kimbo Slice and James Thompson won’t be the only rematch on the bill when Bellator MMA makes its English debut this summer. The California-based organization on Monday announced that Josh Koscheck and Paul Daley will co-headline Bellator 158 in a three-round welterweight affair. The event takes place July 16 at O2 Arena in London. Koscheck and Daley’s first meeting came inside the Octagon for a co-headlining clash at UFC 113 in May 2010. Former college wrestling standout Koscheck used his grappling skills to control and frustrate Daley, who lashed out after the final bell with a late punch to Koscheck’s face. Daley was booted from the UFC in the aftermath, but the bad blood between he and Koscheck has never dissipated. Koscheck will enter the bout in desperate need of a win, as the 38-year-old is currently mired in a five-fight losing streak, the worst of his career. Daley will look to keep rolling after winning his last five, including three straight inside the Bellator cage.

By the Numbers: UFC on Fox 19

Glover Teixeira is gradually climbing back into contention in the light heavyweight division. The Brazilian slugger made short work of Rashad Evans in the UFC on Fox 19 headliner at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla., on Saturday night, knocking out “The Ultimate Fighter 2” winner 1:48 into the opening stanza of their 205-pound clash. That makes three straight Octagon triumphs for the 36-year-old Teixeira, who also finished Patrick Cummins and Ovince St. Preux during his current winning streak. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC on Fox 19 , with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com. 7: Finishes in UFC competition for Teixeira, the most of any light heavyweight since 2012 and the third most in the history of the division, behind only Chuck Liddell and Jon Jones , who both have nine. 6: Significant strikes landed by Teixeira before stopping Evans 1:48 into round one, the fewest landed by the Brazilian in victory during his UFC tenure. Evans landed seven significant strikes in defeat. 2,520: Days since Evans’ only other knockout defeat, which came in a title loss to Lyoto Machida at UFC 98.

Matches to Make After UFC on Fox 19

Some view Khabib Nurmagomedov as the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s uncrowned king at 155 pounds. In his return from a two-year injury layoff, he did nothing to dispel the notion. Nurmagomedov took care of promotional newcomer Darrell Horcher with second-round punches and re-established himself as a serious lightweight title contender at UFC on Fox 19 “Teixeira vs. Evans” on Saturday at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. A replacement for the injured Tony Ferguson , Horcher met his end 3:38 into round two. Various injuries had kept Nurmagomedov on the sidelines since April 19, 2014. The 27-year-old American Kickboxing rep showed no signs of rust in improving his gaudy record to 23-0. Nurmagomedov executed a high-amplitude takedown in the first round and nearly finished it there, achieving full mount and slicing open Horcher’s scalp with elbows. He picked up where he left off in the second, securing another takedown before advancing to the back and forcing the stoppage with unanswered punches. According to FightMetric data, Nurmagomedov out-landed Horcher 75-6 in the significant strikes department and 107-18 in total strikes.

Nieky Holzken Retains Welterweight Title at Glory 29: Copenhagen

One of Glory’s most popular stars, Nieky Holzken was able to retain his welterweight crown in front of thousands of rabid fans in Copenhagen, but it wasn’t as easy as some might have expected. Holzken, who ran his winning streak to 10, struggled with Yoann Kongolo at times and received a gift from the referee in the third. A spinning kick to the liver dropped the champion, but it was ruled a slip, a critical blow to the challenger’s scorecard. But even though Kongolo (61-7) raked “The Natural” with several thudding uppercuts on the inside, the champ proved to be the superior man in rounds four and five. Holzken (89-11) pulled away from Kongolo with slick movement and superb counters, easily shutting him out in the championship rounds. The judges heavily favored the Dutch fighter via tallies of 49-46 (twice) and 48-47 to defend his title for the second time. “I trained very hard to go for the win, of course,” Holzken stated afterward. “I think Kongolo did a very good job. He is a strong opponent, and if he wants I will face him again in the future.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - ‘TUF’ Breaks

Who says that there's no talent coming off of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series? The UFC in Tampa, Florida, on April 16 saw Glover Teixeira clobber Rashad Evans in the first round in a battle of perennial light heavyweight contenders. That knockout loss seems to signal the end or near-end of Evans, the heavyweight winner of “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 2, inside the Octagon. While UFC on Fox 19 may have ushered the former 205-pound champion towards retirement, it also helped put a few newer “Ultimate Fighter” talents on the map. Rose Namajunas fell short in the final of “The Ultimate Fighter 20” to Carla Esparza with the vacant UFC women's strawweight title on the line, but now, “Thug Rose” has risen to No. 6 in the 115-pound rankings and may have earned a second crack at the gold courtesy of a unanimous decision win over Tecia Torres , previously unbeaten as a pro. Meanwhile, Raquel Pennington could not win her division on Season 18, but now the Colorado-based scrapper makes her first top-10 appearance at 135 pounds, courtesy of her split decision win over former UFC title challenger Bethe Correia .

Click here to support Urgent Help for Peter Cunningham by Peter Cunningham

Be the first to like this update Hello everyone! We have great news regarding Peter's upcoming surgeries. We recently found out that a gentleman who knows Peter personally through training with him many years ago, became a renowned surgeon in his home country specializing in hip replacement surgery, and will be able to perform the surgeries himself and help lower the total cost of the procedures. Although we're still significantly short of our goal, we decided to at least go ahead with the first part of the two required surgeries (both legs have to be done separately with a 2 month break in between) as we try to raise more funds for the second leg. We are still working out the details, but looks like we may be able to schedule the first surgery within the next 4-5 weeks, end of April/beginning of May. As soon as we have more information we'll post another update. Thanks again to everyone who has helped so far, we couldn't do this without your help! Also, a quick reminder, this Saturday, April 2nd is Peter Cunningham Day at the Museum of Martial Arts.

Video: Errol Spence Makes Quick Work of Chris Algieri

It's over! @errolspencejr KOs @chrisalgieri in round 5! #mandown #spencealgieri https://t.co/CJOMi06Dn6 — PBC (@premierboxing) April 17, 2016 Errol Spence Jr. deemed it his biggest fight ever. Just one look at the former 2012 U.S. Olympian, and you get the sense even bigger fights will soon be heading his way. Before a national TV audience, before a packed crowd at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Spence made a loud announcement that he’s arrived by splashing former junior welterweight titlist Chris Algieri (21-3, 8 KOs) three times, including twice in fifth, when referee Benjy Esteves Jr. waved it over at :48. Spence did something that not even the great Manny Pacquiao could do, and that’s stop Algieri for the first time in his career. Algieri was knocked down in the fourth, and that was the beginning of the end for him. The second knockdown, but first in the fifth, came when Spence caught Algieri off balance with a left to the jaw. The end came when he popped Algieri with an overhand left, again hitting the magic spot on the jaw, forcing Algieri into the ropes and plopping down on his butt.

Mwekassa Dominates Hameur-Lain in Glory 29 Super Fight Series Main Event

Light heavyweight contender Zack Mwekassa has been claiming that he should be next in line for another crack at the Glory championship and after watching him dominate veteran Zinedine Hameur-Lain for three rounds, he makes a good argument. Mwekassa pounded on Hameur-Lain in the main event of the Glory 29 Super Fight Series in Copenhagen, Denmark on Saturday, capping off an undercard overflowing with action. Mwekassa was relentless in his pursuit of his French adversary, pressuring Hameur-Lain with a vicious body assault and sharp punches to the head. Hameur-Lain (54-13, 33 KOs) was never truly hurt in the battle, but the Congo native’s attacks kept him out of sync form the start. Hameur-Lain rallied late as Mwekassa appeared to be gassing out, but it was too little too late. Mwekassa (14-3, 12 KOs) was awarded a unanimous decision via tallies of 29-28 on all three scorecards. Welterweights Harut Grigorian and Maximo Suarez ripped into each like hyenas fighting over a kill, each landing serious leather as soon as the fracas began. Both combatants were rocked in the brawl, but, sadly, it didn’t last long.

Report: Police Investigating Sexual Assault Allegations Made Against B.J. Penn

Police in Hilo, Hawaii, have reportedly launched an investigation into the allegations of sexual assault made against former UFC champion B.J. Penn . Citing unnamed sources, MMAFighting.com on Monday reported that the Hilo Police Department has launched a second-degree sexual assault investigation into the matter, which was made public in February . The incident in question took place in Hilo on Aug. 31, 2015, and allegedly involves Penn and a 29-year-old woman who is the girlfriend of a former BJPenn.com employee. Penn, 37, has denied the allegations and claims that is being extorted. UFC officials commented on the matter in February and, in a statement , said that Penn would not be booked for a fight until “more details” of the incident came to light. The company also said the allegation would be “investigated by an independent party and thoroughly reviewed by the UFC.” Last week, the company officially announced that Penn will return to the Octagon against Dennis Siver at June’s UFC 199 .
